This was kind of off. The ammunition wasn't collected because it was expressly needed on another battlefield, it's the tithe the planet/group owes for its existence within the Imperium. It's slated to be received after a set amount of time regardless of the current conditions. They didn't do it because the battlefield was already lost and they just wanted them to die. The munitorum has it on the books that it is owed, thus it is paid. By all means the expectation is that the guard makes do regardless after they have been left with only melee weapons. Similar thing with the ending, the attendant isn't upset because the offering is meagre. She's upset because they're already overburdened by their stores of other tithes and thus condemn it to obliteration since the storage platform can't take the strain. The excellence of the episode is that they all served nobly and still died for nothing because the lumbering bureaucracy of the Adminstratum had it on the record that it was time to pay a tithe. Glory, honour, victory, are nothing to a galaxy spanning war machine that counts every bullet.

Assuming they had the lascannons in the first place since all the emplacements are standard AA. Recharging lasgun cells in fires is a last ditch tactic that takes several hours to recharge them. It's not standard practice because it significantly reduces the lifespan of the cell and cuts its shot capacity by half. After doing it two to three times you've likely ruined the cell. That's why they're supplied with multiple, the main way they get charged is by being collected post battle and used with specialised equipment. Those cells don't last as long as most think.

I am kind of confused by this episode. First of all, this does not seem to be the Imperial Tithe. This is at most a wartime requisition of material. The ACTUAL imperial tithe usually involves 2 things. Soldiers, and material, no? The Departmento Munitorum oversees the collection of soldiers, and the Departmento Exacta oversees the material. And the genuine imperial tithe usually also involves the planetary governor, various administratum overseers along with military forces like Adeptus Arbites. What is shown on the episode does not match the exact criteria. Where is the Administratum clerk to oversee the loading? The Arbites to act as muscle? Infact, would it not make MUCH more sense for these materials to be requisitioned by the planetary governor? After all, it is HIS planet that has been underperforming in the Tithe. Why is, instead of the planetary governor being roasted over an open flame by the various adepti, a seemingly off-world regiment of cadians (or they could have been relocated to the planet, but still) to be forced to give up their ammunition? Look, I get that the episode was meant to depict the imperium as this monolithic machine of unstoppable and unknowable bureaucracy, but they could have ensured it made at least a *little* more sense.
@YOGI-kb9tgАй бұрын
No this is completely in check for 40k the tithe HAS to happen they don't a choice and they don't stop the tithes unless the world is no longer capable of producing a tithes even if the recorded end up getting destroyed. The impirium are the bad guys and they are so much of a bloated empire that this is exactly what the impirium would do to an absolute T. Like seriously you have entire planets and systems lost or destroyed because some ministorum clerk filed some paper work in the wrong section.

This is really poor critical analysis I have to say, in a similar form to that of the likes of cinemasins. The bulk of what you laid out is based on assumed oversight or details that aren't specified within the body of the work. This is the Imperial tithe because it is declared as such, directly in episode. What a world tithes varies dramatically between worlds, some offer food goods, troops and raw resources. Others provide only one resource. TIthes can vary further with some taking special resources because as with everything consistency is not the goal. The Adminstratum works to its own goals, it will unfairly balance its tithes as it pleases. Furthermore, it can call a tithe at any time, some planets have been tithed multiple times within the same year. The guard refer to the group that supplies them collectively as the munitorum as do most people. They don't specify which group in conversation and may not even be educated enough to know the difference. In the previous episode arbites were featured to collect the tithe. They are not here because, if one considers the situation for a second, they are likely dead already or are dead weight in a full on war. Same with the clerk, not necessary. Though again, you're assuming there's not one aboard the ships who did oversee it. Same with the governor, nothing present suggests the governor didn't okay this very thing. Though it doesn't matter if he does or not, because the Adminstratum has the go ahead to tithe as it pleases and even send forces to take the tithe if a planet doesn't meet quota. They aren't cadians, they're more likely local Imperial Guard.
@h.h.w6084Ай бұрын
@@aaroncarter4019 Fair enough. I Agree with your points about assumptions and details that are lacking in this short episode. However, I will still defend my opinion. Let me go through your statements. First, the Tithe. "This is the Imperial tithe because it is declared as such, directly in episode." Of course its part of the Imperial Tithe, that is the entire point of the series. To showcase the process of collecting the various tithes. What I am arguing is that actual *collecting* part does not match established canon. "The Adminstratum works to its own goals, it will unfairly balance its tithes as it pleases." This is incorrect. Generally speaking, the Administratum (and by extension, the Adeptus Terra) balances the Tithe into several grades. After all, if you plunder the entire planet for its foodstock, next time there wont be much of a planet to collect the Tithe from. So declaring that they unfairly balance stuff is partly incorrect. Whilst it is not often shown *exactly* how it is calculated, it doubtlessly involves a lot of scribes, personnel and manpower to calculate the level of Tithe that is to be collected from each planet and sector. "Furthermore, it can call a tithe at any time, some planets have been tithed multiple times within the same year." This depends HIGHLY on how industrialized the planet and the sector it resides in actually is and how stable the warp is. Is it the crown-world of the local sector government? Is it part of a string of tightly-knit hive worlds? Is the warp calm? Is the sector/system backwater? All of these things determine how often the tithe is. Now sure, the bigger and more important worlds can probably be tithed multiple times a year or even each month. "The guard refer to the group that supplies them collectively as the munitorum as do most people." Except the Departmento Munitorum is the *specific* organization responsible for supplying the Imperial Guard. Most Imperial Guard officers would indeed know this, due to the sheer amount of paperwork involved on an operational level. Infact, some larger regiments may even have their own staff of Munitorum scribes to handle the paperwork. "They are not here because, if one considers the situation for a second, they are likely dead already or are dead weight in a full on war." Except the Arbites have been described as "....are equipped to be self-sufficient and to support a complete Arbites army..." (Codex Imperialis, Background book). So the arbites would *not* in fact be dead-weight in a war zone. They have their own army groups and almost always reside in several huge and fortified Precinct-Fortresses. "Same with the clerk, not necessary" Except the clerk is *very* necessary. This is the Imperial Tithe. The single most important thing ANY planet of the imperium has to contribute to. To steal from the Tithe is to steal from the Emperor himself (because the resources are considered to be property of the Adeptus Terra and by extension the Emperor.) So no, a clerk is in fact *vitaly* important to oversee the successful collection. And now, for the most glaring issue: "Though it doesn't matter if he does or not, because the Adminstratum has the go ahead to tithe as it pleases and even send forces to take the tithe if a planet doesn't meet quota.......They aren't cadians, they're more likely local Imperial Guard......." And here we get to the problem. The Administratum did indeed order the Tithe to be collected. The problem is that the Departmento Exacta would be handling the colleciton of this specific Tithe. The guard regiment is under purview of the Munitorum. Both the Munitorum AND the Exacta are under the Administratum. See what im getting at? The Imperial Guard most likely has its orders to relocate to this specific planet in order to defend it. Perhaps they even have standing orders to defend it at all cost? *Perhaps* they even had to requisition the planet's ammunition? IN FACT, the regiments own Comissar would have the necessary authority to sign off on any emergency requisition because *all* Comissars are Munitorum officers and formally part of the Ordo Tempestus. And THIS is what im trying to get at. This is the Departmento Exacta, barging into an active warzone, without the actual scribes, without the arbites or any other personnel usually associated with the Tithe. Then, they order a group belonging to a *DIFFERENT* organization to hand over their supplies! Would this not be considered a gross overreach of their authority?? Infact, the Commissar *with* them would know that it is the Munitorum that deals with the Imperial Guard and their equipment, *not* the Exacta. Of course, if it is actually revealed that the local regiment was actually a part of the PDF, this entire tangent of mine is pretty much useless.

To give a tidbit of lore to add to the decentralisation of the Imperial Armed Forces: Most Guard regiments are of a very specific type, Infantry, Artillery, or Armored (aka tanks). These regiments have only sparse if any of the other's primary units. An infantry regiment may have some light artillery as support guns or an armored regiment has some mobile infantry. This is so that, should a singular regiment turn traitor, it can be easily countered. Crush the infantry with tanks, blow the tanks up with artillery, overwhelm the defenseless artillery up close with bodies, that sort of thing. There are some exceptions, the ones I remember are Armageddon (having a lot of infantry in armored transports) and Krieg (having a lot more guns per regiment, also having in general just bigger regiments) and with both i would say it is because of their assured loyalty. Armageddon is a massive war zone that is still somehow being held, the guardsmen there are not going to break, afterall they have managed to make it this far without doing so on a larger scale. And Krieg... do I need to justify Krieg? They are the kind to only consider retreating from an assault after days of endless, fruitless attacks and subsequently being hammered by orbital bombardments and Khornate beserker drops.

can I just say this episode was perfect finally showing how horrifying it is to be a guardsmen in this universe but also how badass and stalwart they are in the face of the insane odds, not to mention how honestly sad it is, how your life is less important than the ammo that runs your gun.

Considering what was going on and what the orks enjoy. The defenders should try and politely ask (or violently demand) ammo from the orks, that way they could get a good scrap going for longer! The orks might just be more reasonable and practical than the monitorum.
I am surprised that the Cadians managed to kill the Orks with their bayonets, seeing how their bayonets are fixed at the wrong place.

10:16 DAMN! The first time I watched this episode, I thought the Commissar unloaded his bolter and gave the clip to the Sergeant because he no longer intended, according to his authority, to shoot Imperial soldiers. Now I understand - he gave his clip as part of the ammunition that was to be evacuated from this planet, since he decided to stay here.
@danielc2701Ай бұрын
It's not an evacuation, it's a tithe, i.e taxes. Someone above (aaroncarter I think it was) stated it very nicely when he said that the tithe was not collected because there is an evacuation, it's collected because the Administratum's timetable said that it was time to collect it. It would have happened ork or no ork. He gave his ammo away so that he is "not better than his men".
@blakestewart7533Ай бұрын
13:30 I love how this Kasrkin calls command out foe their bullshit. After the commisar mentions that they will be given cover fire their ascent, this guy says that they couldnt have given it on the way down. As the commisar points out, there was nothing to protect going down. Makes it seem like every single soldier that was sent down wasnt expected to make it back alive.

Thing about fighting for a cause is that the cause will always betray you. Those guardsmen are the real bullets If those guardsmen leave Imperium for Tau Empire or a non-chaos criminal group or even join ruinous powers, I wouldn't blame them.

@YOGI-kb9tgАй бұрын
So an incorrect part the pilons were not holding the eye of terra. The great rift appeared after guillmans ressurection. The great rift was basically a gift to abaddon from the chaos gods. So the pons were not holding the eye of terra because they were inactive and only when they were activated it started closing the eye of terror.

not allways, plenty of commissars use chainswords and plenty of sgts use power swords, just depends on waht they was issued/personal preference.

I think more than anything else, perhaps even more than the Custodian episode this one demonstrated the unimaginable size of the Imperium. They can afford to lose worlds to a clerical error or to purposefully destroy a thousand of them to offer the Tyranids burnt ground. No one will ever notice. There is so much raw material, both human and otherwise in an entire galaxy that war really could go on for hundreds of millennia, millions upon millions of years. Of course everything is artificial as well. GW need unending settings for customers to produce dioramas and conduct miniature wargames. Therefore all the countering influences that would actually prevent anything of the kind happening are minimized or ignored. Real wars are flashpoints, pivotal moments and self-limiting. There is no way to win in 40K, nothing to do but struggle and hope the final collapse comes during someone else's lifespan. Although... Perhaps that is more realistic than I thought!
