All versions of this song bring me to tears. But the one of Vince Gill at George Jones funeral absolutely broke me! I full out sobbed until I could barely breathe. It's such a powerful and beautiful song. And it was written and performed with such love! I don't know that I'll ever watch the George Jones funeral version again, just the memory of it is haunting.

Yes. This is a very emotional performance with Patty Loveless at George Jones' funeral. kzbin.info/www/bejne/pH2tcqNqhtCaf7c Patty did background vocals on the original recording with Vince back in '95 so it was very appropriate for her to be on stage with him during the funeral. Incredible how she carries him through. Absolutely beautiful. Have a box of tissues handy.

It took many year for Vince to admit the he wrote this song for Keith Whitley and his brother. He never wanted to seem he was cashing in on Keith’s death, so he didn’t admit that fact. RIP Keith Whitley- “were no stranger to the pain”. God bless all the have had loss. The pain doesn’t leave, it just becomes manageable.

I didn’t know that he wrote for Keith Whitley also. But, that line”You were no stranger to the rain.” That says it. I love me some Keith Whitley. I have sent links for his songs to Pat. Fingers crossed. I love some Vince Gill too. I would never think he was cashing in on him. This song would have been huge if he never said why it was written, I believe. It touches so my people bc it is so relatable & beautiful.

Country music at its best is unique in its fearless willingness to sing about the most painful human experiences, because these are what make us human. Country music came from poor, powerless people who grew strong and resilient from having suffered so much. They felt the pain as much as anyone, but they found beauty in it as well.

Pat, there's absolutely nothing wrong with feeling our emotions. I used to struggle to attempt to hide mine, but came to realize it was futile, I've always been very emotional when it comes to music. Now , I feel sorry for those who can listen to a song such as this and be unaffected by the power and beauty of it. There are many songs that bring my emotions to the forefront. Keep doing what you're doing and never be ashamed, and I'll continue to enjoy all of your musical reactions. God Bless and stay safe.

A few months back I came across a video of Vince Gill singing this with a third verse he has added to the song. My uncle had this song at his funeral when he died from lung cancer at the age of 40, he had planned his own funeral. That was in 2002. Now I really think of my mom when I hear this, she died in 2019 at the age of 62. She had unexpected complications from a genetic disorder and spent 39 days in ICU before we took her off life support. The lyrics describe her so much, she had a really hard life and always put everyone else first before herself. I truly believe her work on earth was done.

Affects me the same way, every time. Had this performed live at my mother’s passing at her request. Probably the most beautiful song ever written, thank you for reacting to it.

Bless your heart!! That is one thing we appreciate about you so much...you are just so real! Music can be so healing, and I know you have said many times it speaks to your soul, as it does mine! May you feel God's loving arms wrapped around you. In His Love...

I always cry when I hear this song. It was released at the time my Dad passed away. It's a sign of an empathetic heart to feel this so deeply. No worries, mate. ❣️

I have known this song for many years, but it was one my dad had requested be played at his funeral held this past January.
