The association between the Oxford-AstraZeneca COVID-19 vaccine (also known as Vaxzevria) and thrombotic events, specifically Vaccine-Induced Thrombotic Thrombocytopenia (VITT) or Thrombosis with Thrombocytopenia Syndrome (TTS), has been a significant concern. This issue led to changes in vaccine usage policies in various countries. Here’s a detailed overview of the evidence and the timeline of events:
Evidence of Association
In early 2021, reports emerged from several European countries of rare and severe cases of blood clots combined with low levels of blood platelets (thrombocytopenia) occurring in individuals who had recently received the Oxford-AstraZeneca vaccine. The clots were unusual because they occurred in the brain (cerebral venous sinus thrombosis, CVST) and abdomen, and were associated with thrombocytopenia, which is not typically seen with regular clotting events.
March 2021:
• Researchers and health agencies began investigating these cases. The European Medicines Agency (EMA) confirmed that the overall benefits of the vaccine in preventing COVID-19 outweighed the risks of side effects.
• However, by late March, the EMA acknowledged that there was a possible link between the vaccine and rare clotting events.
April 2021:
• The EMA and the UK’s Medicines and Healthcare products Regulatory Agency (MHRA) released statements acknowledging a possible link between the vaccine and very rare cases of blood clots combined with low blood platelet counts. They noted that the risk of these events is extremely low.
• Studies suggested that this clotting condition might be due to an immune response leading to a condition similar to heparin-induced thrombocytopenia (HIT), where antibodies activate platelets.
Countries Reacting to the Evidence
As evidence of the association between the vaccine and rare clotting events became clearer, several countries adjusted their vaccination strategies or suspended the use of the Oxford-AstraZeneca vaccine temporarily.
March 2021:
• March 11: Denmark was the first to suspend the use of the vaccine as a precautionary measure, followed by other countries including Norway and Iceland.
• March 15: Germany, France, Italy, and Spain suspended the vaccine’s use temporarily.
April 2021:
• Some countries resumed using the vaccine but restricted its use to older adults because the reported cases predominantly involved younger individuals. For instance:
• Germany and France limited the vaccine to people over the age of 55 and 60, respectively.
• Canada and Belgium limited its use to those over 55.
• UK: The MHRA advised that people under 30 should be offered an alternative vaccine if available.
Ongoing Adjustments:
• Decisions have evolved based on further data. Some countries resumed full use while continuing to monitor side effects closely, and others maintained age-based restrictions.
Conclusion and Current Status
As of now, many countries continue to use the Oxford-AstraZeneca vaccine with specific age or risk-related recommendations in place. The balance of risk versus benefit depends heavily on the local context, such as the availability of other vaccines, the current state of the pandemic, and the risk of exposure to COVID-19.
The situation with the Oxford-AstraZeneca vaccine and rare thrombotic events illustrates the challenges of vaccine safety surveillance, especially during a global pandemic. It underscores the importance of robust pharmacovigilance systems and the ability to quickly adapt policy in response to emerging safety data.

Dr, thanks for your knowledge sharing. So many countries have taken action as early as they know about Covishield, what was our country doing, as it was known in 2021 itself, what are the research done in our country on this? and has SERUM opened up anything on this?

One question: everytime we are taking vaccine and resistive to virus. Virus itself mutating against resistant. The chances of this process could be repeated. So we are again developing virus as indestructible. So non vaccinated people may be affected highly compare to those who vaccinated multiple times because of strengthen virus. So why should we do vaccination when our body naturally build resistance.

@@DrSanthoshJacob where does the virus mutate,it doesn't mutate in outside environment,it mutate within our body, then how come these vaccine fight against newly mutatef strain, aren't we weaking our body or addicting it to vaccine, naturally we r immune to foreign body, isn't it good option to build good immune system naturally rather than taking vaccine.
