I find the RESMED 10 unit very robust and reliable but the universal complaint still seems to be "Not enough water capacity". The balance is that if you raise the temperature, you use more water. If you lower the temperature, you get dry passages. If the tank runs dry , then you smell that plastic, metallic odor coming through the tube. They need a bigger tank to hold 10 hours' worth of water.

I like cool air as warm air makes me feel more claustrophobic. I found putting ice and water in the reservoir cools the air just right for me. I have air temp setting at 19 or low and humidity around 4 this works for me. The room can be hot and stuffy but I am breathing nice cool refreshing air. I am brand new to therapy and still in clincal testing stages to see if therapy works for me so far it does. I havent got my own machine yet.My clinician only works 3 days a week so I find cpap reviews very helpful and fun to watch. Great job Nick

I've been on CPAP for close to two years. Because winter's here and the air is colder and drier, I've started using the heated hose on my AirSense 10. I have it set to 85 degrees, and it works great! No more "ice-cube" nose at night from breathing in cold air! I've also started using the humidifier, and that's been somewhat less successful. I have the humidity level set to five (5), but I'm STILL waking up with dried-out, and, at times, dried-out AND chapped, lips. I haven't yet definitively decided if I'll stay with the humidifier or not as it seems to be making little, if any, difference.

Cheers man. I had rainout a while back and followed the advice on your channel and realised that I did not have my climateline heated tube activated. Turned it on and rainout fixed. It has gotten cold in Melbourne recently, and now my nose is congested. I have just gone into the clinical settings of my Air sense 10 and changed the humidification settings from Auto to Manual and increased the humidification. Also looking at getting a tube cover and lowering the height of my machine. Thanks for your advice!

Thank you very much Nick for this very important topic, I have been using CPAP for nearly 2 years, at the beginning I was not using a humidifier and all was OK for me but after a while, I started to have "mouth leaking" and "dry mouth" problems and once I made a research to overcome these problems I noticed it's a mistake to ignore humidifier for CPAP patients, it's a must to use regardless of the season. But you have pointed very critical details as well like "heated hose" or a way to keep hose warm. Currently, I have been using a heated hose and I can set the temp of the hose with my Airsense 10, yet I am thinking to purchase a Hose Cover as it will not only provide a cover for the humidity but also will help to reduce that frustrating hose creak problem during the sleep. PS: Until this video, I had no idea people have this chance to get "Hybernite Universal Heated Tube Kit" that's a very innovative product I think for the ones who need it, I appreciate that as well.
@CPAPReviews4 жыл бұрын
Very welcome mate! Yes you can certainly adjust the temp of your airsense10 tubing. You will just need to change the mode of humidifier settings. I discuss this in the Airsense part 2 series. Here's the link kzbin.info/www/bejne/fIK7hGqCqslor9U . I believe it's around the 1:50 mark. Cheers and thanks for your comment. Have a good one

With the current recall of the Philips Dream Stations, the use of the humidifier and the foam decomposing is prudent not to use it, unless you decide to remove the foam, this until you get a replacement from Philips, thing that cane take quite a long time.

Nick, thanks for your great information. I stopped using my humidifier because of the extra heat to humidify made me too hot to sleep well. OMG, I watched your video showing the filthy motor of the Resmed 9. I've had the same machine (s8) since 2006 with no follow up (sleep Dr moved) and no new machine. Now in 2023, I began coughing all night! I discovered black things floating in the humidifier. It finally died two days ago and I'm waiting on a new one. My goodness, how I wish I had been told how often to replace my machine! I'm a nurse and I'm so grossed out by what I've been inhaling. I wish I had found you. I can't be the only one who never thought that motor could gunk up and cause respiratory issues.

I have a question but relates to masks. The masks I've been using is nasal pillows. I have severe insomnia and so can lie in bed hours before falling asleep. With the mask I have the BMC, the rigid plastic part sits just on my lip and I can't even have a drink. I saw the Phillips resperonic mask on your site and notice the nasal pillow ( or frame it sitsbin) didn't go near the lip. Plus the tubing won't get in the way when trying to drink, as its at the top of the head. I have to take it off every sip. Question is, can it be used on the luna g3 or only Phillips?

Great information there. I have an older Respironics System One auto with the heated hose. I use to put water in the tank but haven't done so for years but in winter I switch on the heated hose and that makes it more comfortable and I don't get condensation in the tubing. I use one of the small hose lifters to raise the tubing up off the bed and that has worked great no more readjusting the hose every time I roll over in bed and the nasal pillows so more comfortable. I do have problems with my nasal passages getting blocked during the day and my nose runs like clock work in the evenings. During the day I am breathing through my mouth a lot get the cracked lip and dry throat syndromes but worst is my work colleges keep asking me if I'm okay cause of the sound of my mouth breathing or gasping they say. I use nasal decongestants a lot to clear my nasal passageways as hay fever is one of my plights too.

hi Nick should my mouth stay open or closed while using a full face mask. ln my case my mouth naturally stays open and no matter what the humidity levels are set at I still get major dry mouth but not dry nose. Do you think a chinstrap can help alleviate that problem?
@CPAPReviews3 жыл бұрын
Hey buddy, thanks for question. The beauty of a full face mask is that you can breathe through your nose or your mouth as the mask seal covers both but yes you will get more dry mouth issues if you can't sleep with the mouth closed (sometimes even with humidification). Have you ever tried using some 'mouth tape' ? Check out Somnifix - bit.ly/2HV1Sdb . I wouldn't use a chin strap mate, too much with a full face mask. Cheers

A very interesting and informative video!! I used a Phillips for 9 years but recently had to discontinue using it due to a recall. I purchased a ResMed but what a mistake!! With the Phillips it would normally use a 1/4 to 1/2 a water tank per night. It could go 2 - 3 nights before needing a refill. The ResMed is empty by morning. My lips are stuck to my gums and my throat is dry as sandpaper!! I've tried the heated hose, regulars hose, and humidifier setting clear up to the maximum setting of 8. I'm considering putting a room humidifier at the head of my bed to see if that helps or seriously considering going back to my Phillips even if it had a recall. This may sound weird but I don't think the ResMed has the pressure like my Phillips had. Using my Phillips I hardly slept with my mouth open because how it felt. But when I sleep with my mouth open when using the ResMed the pressure or feeling is weak. Maybe that's another reason my moth and throat is dry - and I'm sleeping with my mouth open with the ResMed. Best of luck. Duane

Very educational. I am learning more from you than from clinic and the instruction manual. I have a few questions. 1-Does F&P SleepStyle have auto settings for the humidity? 2-How do I keep the humidifier tank from evaporating to "bone dry" state when I wake up? (I have the humidity level at 3 "drops" and my room temperature is 29 to 30 Celsius, I use a non-heated tube due to high cost here in Canada) 3-What is the difference between setting humidity at low on the machine (1 "drop" on the screen) vs putting it on the highest setting? 4-I live in northern Canada (Edmonton, AB) at about 1200+ feet above sea-level. Does altitude affect humidity? 5-If I do get a heated tube, can I immerse it fully in water to wash?

When they talk about rainout, the suggestion is usually to allow any condensation/water to run back into the tank. However, with such a long length of tubing, it seems almost impossible not to have a dip in the tubing between the user and the machine. I currently have the tube come to the bed from a higher position, over a hanger, to avoid it dragging on the floor. Any suggestions?

Hi, i use a F&P Simplus FF mask which has an adapter to use the heated tube on my Resmed Airsense AutoSet (NZ Hosp Supplied) im wanting to use an HME for off grid camping as ive turned off my humidifier to save battery life. Do you know a brand that fits ? Many thanks also for your channel its been very informative and relevant for us lot downunder :)
@CPAPReviews3 жыл бұрын
G'day Nath, you should not require any 'adaptor' for an Airsense. All CPAP/AUTO/BIPAP machines have universal mask fittings except the ResMed AIRMINI. So as long as you don't get the HME device for the airmini they should fit your ResMed AirSense10. A lot of people get confused with this topic as most masks have little quick release connectors that people forget to take out of the tubing when they change masks etc but as a general rule Every mask will work with every machine EXCEPT AIRMINI but you can also buy an adaptor for this machine which will make any mask fit with the airmini. Glad you are enjoying the content ;-)

Hi Nick, just wanted to know the recommended setting for a Phillips dreamstation with a heated hose that would avoid getting sinus infection or sore throat. Mine is currently on 3 for heated tube and 3 for the hotplate. Great videos.
@CPAPReviews4 жыл бұрын
G'day mate, really depends on a few things like how hot or cold the ambient temp is and also the ambient humidity in the atmosphere but what i would do is try the extremes and see what happens. IE put your hot plate as high as it goes and do a preheat before bed and also set the heated tube at max also. You will either find that it improves your side effects or makes them worse. If it makes them better.... GREAT! If it makes them worse then you know that an increase in humidity is causing the issues so you would want to start dropping down the heat plate to reduce the humidity. You only really need to change the heated tube level if you're finding the air is too cool or getting water condensation :-). Let me know how you go and best of luck

Hi Donna, what machine do you have? Many heated tubes have actual different levels of heat on them so you can change how hot the coil gets inside the tube using the setting on your machine. If you've got it set to max and still getting rainout then you could try a tube wrap also but i would just be looking at the position of your machine near your bed. You want to have it lower than you bed so that any water build up runs back down into the humidifier chamber :-). Best wishes Nick

Question, can I use rain water in my cpap machine?
@CPAPReviews4 жыл бұрын
G'day Rod, great question mate! You're probably best running it through a water filter first just to remove some of the dirt / dust etc but if you don't have a water filter then you will probably just end up with a lot of sediment at the bottom of the humidifier chamber which you will need to clean more often. I don't think it will have any impact on the quality of the therapy. Cheers

I always use filtered water. Tap water here is horrible. It’s got too much chlorine and leaves marks on my stainless steel sink and my car after washing it. I wouldn’t use it in a CPAP machine. Some people use distilled water.. or boil up some filtered water and keep it in the fridge in the summer. Winter at room temp. Boil enough for say 2 nights... what do you think Nick? Thank you Nick. Well done. I keep the bedroom quite cool as I seem to sleep better that way. I also live in a very dry climate. (Denver, Colorado). I have my humidification level at 4 out of 8. I don’t notice condensation in my tube as much as I notice it in the nasal pillow. Usually only on one side. What does this mean? So I need to adjust? I am also noticing a raspy voice. Are these related somehow? Thanks Nick!!!
@CPAPReviews4 жыл бұрын
Hi dianne, you might be getting condensation in your pillow mask from your actual breathing instead of the actual humidifier itself. The air expired from your lungs is quite humid and can cause moisture build up when you breathe out if your room is cold. If it's not bothering you too much i wouldn't worry about it but if you have a heated tube system, turn the tube temp up and it should help with this. Regarding your voice, i would suggest trialling a higher level of humidity as it sounds like it could potentially be caused from the dry air. Let me know what machine you have and i can send you some links :-). Hope all is well in Denver :). Take care and thanks for your comment Nick

Thanks for this Nick. I’m halfway through my cpap trial, I’m getting used to it but my major issue is dry throat. It limits how long I can use the machine, For the first 2 weeks I used a resmed airsense10 & I’m now using a Philips dreamstation. I’m using a Resmed F20 mask (I’m a mouth breather due to perennial hayfever & deviated septum) I have the humidity set on 5 and the tube temp on 1 as I don’t like the warm air. I live in Adelaide, so the air here is dry year round. What can I do to stop waking frequently through the night due to sore dry throat? My mask has no leaks! I was hoping the Philips dreamstation might work best for me as I heard it’s humidity is better than Resmed Airsense 10 but I’m having 8.4 AHI’s on the dreamstation whereas I was averaging 2 using the Airsense. My sleep study was 45 AHI/hr.
@CPAPReviews4 жыл бұрын
Hi Kate, the only things i can really suggest is 1. Make sure you are preheating the humidifier so that it is producing humidity the moment you start using the therapy. 2. Perhaps look at using some mouth strips like somnifix - bit.ly/2HV1Sdb . This will promote you breathing through your nose and your nose is also a humidifier which will heat and warm the air and reduce the dry mouth. 3. You could speak to your chemist as there's a number of mouth washes that can be used to help keep the mouth lubricated during the night. Let me know how you go. Good luck

If I want 95% humidity what do I change the tube temp, humidity settings to. How would I know is there some table with values such as room temp, tube temp and humidity level to maintain a certain relatively humidity percentage?

Hi there, that's very interesting. The only thing you could possibly do is 1. Reduce the humidifier settings lower so it uses less water per hour or 2. Perhaps just keep a water bottle next to the bed and then refill half way through the night. Most people report that the water lasts throughout the complete night and they are certainly designed to do so. Let me know if you find a solution to your issue. Thank you and good luck. Nick
