Good video on Dreamstation repairs. I just completed my repairs. Three items I did, #1 the cuts with the dremmel I made I left some material so I ended up with a trap door. After removal of foam. #2 I used a small soldering iron and weld the plastic together. Enough to add a little structure to the cut part. #3 I followed up with hot glue to fill in and complete the job. Works great and no stink! Should last for a good long while.

Thank you so much for posting this. Mine was out of warranty, so I had nothing to lose by taking it out and potentially everything to lose by keeping the foam in!! We did also take a layer of an N95 mask, placed it over the heated tube between where the mask clicks in to act as an intake filter after taking out the foam until I can sort out getting a different machine. I didn’t know about this recall and found out by accident and so appreciate all of your information. Thanks for being a good human and helping us out. That’s what good humans do.

@@CPAPReviews Thank you so much for your videos. I bought the Dreamstation 1 because it was considered one of the best at the time. Philips' customer support has been appalling on this recall. They know their retailers. Retailers have the contact details of consumers. I can only speak of my experience. No contact from point of purchase. Also, the new Dreamstation 2 just didn't drop out of a hat. They changed the foam. Why did they change it? How long have they known of the issue? The not knowing when this issue will be resolved is of great concern to consumers. Just give consumers a cash settlement so that can purchase another non Philips CPAP device so that they can sleep in peace. Keep up the great advocacy we aren't receiving elsewhere!

great vid - tried it but found a better way to get the foam out - use a 1/2” drill bit to drill two holes in the meaty section of each foam cavity - dont go too deep or youll scar the middle groove - then just pull them out with needle nose pliers - very clean and then you can easily cover the holes up if needed with a 13mm (1/2”) medical grade silicon plugs- the foam on the left side of your video with the one stick that looks like its going through it is actually pre-cut on one side around it so comes out easy

Great stuff Nick. If I may, there is a better way to remove the foam to ensure that the sensors are least effected. I made the opening on top, the side you use as well, not the inner wall. I only made three cuts, two about an inch long, and they are about 1/2 inch apart then one cut between them to make a squared-off U shape (did this for both pieces of foam). That can be carefully bent up enough to pull out the foam and then "hinge" the plastic back down. It can then be plastic welded or simply taped over to reclose the opening and keep it air-tight. I made the opening on the air-intake side closer to the air-intake (away from the middle of the u-shaped chamber). That keeps it away from the humidity sensor and more importantly the differential pressure sensor (or what looks like one). A bent paper clip was invaluable in getting that side of the foam out. To make the cuts I just repeatedly scored the plastic with a "box cutter" utility knife, basically any razor blade type thing. Again, important to leave the chamber as minimally modified as possible as to not through off the sensors and their firmware control. And I was a bit paranoid as to what I would use to seal the holes, so I am using the original plastic with this method. Keep up the fantastic work you are doing.

A big thanks to the cpap reviews community for your helpful suggestions 1. The number one piece of advice i can give you is to not follow any of my advice. 2 Make the incision / holes on the inside walls inside the chamber where the motor goes so that it remains sealed once you put the motor cover back on (GENIUS!). 3. Apparently you can drill 3/8" hole and the drill then will wrap around the foam and it can be pulled out that way also, someone suggested using heavy duty tape to seal back the chamber. 4. I did think about potentially using a vacuum sealed bag like a cryvac and then sealing up the foam and putting it back in but decided against it. 5. Consider possible legal ramifications if there's a class lawsuit or your health has been effected by the foam, if there's no more foam inside might be hard to prove this so consider taking a video with a timestamp etc. Like i said, you can just wait and i imagine you will receive a new casing or potentially a new machine. How long this takes though is a concern. If you have any other great suggestions i would love to hear them in the comments. Lots of love. Nick

Spot on Nicko. I keep saying no matter what you do keep your evidence, be it the foam, or a tiny. section of it (doesn't rake much to test) if you can't get it out. Don't just send it ALL back. Store your evidence and perhaps even hose in an AIRTIGHT bag and forget its there. Carcinogens can take 10 years or more to show , even after exposure has ceased. Its historically a fact. Im truly not panicking anyone, it's just the reality of this world. No proof no compo. I keep thinking nicko, getting them all back means getting all the evidence back. Must be someway of retaining something

I made a suggestion earlier that once it goes back so does your evidence. Don't know how good my advice was but I suggested removing just a very small slither of the foam prior to sending, or removing it.... ie the proof is you had the machine. Maybe keep a little of the foam in an airtight ziplok, or the foam itself. It doesn't effect warranty as its not related. You can still send the machine back once it becomes possible. But you should keep some evidence, air sealed. In a bag and forget its there. Effects of this type of issue are not new nor instant (years can pass) chemicals on crops, in water. Asbestos... if you return all the evidence, what case is there 10 years later ..... if you really don't want to keep a tiny portion of the foam (its all that science would need) consider keeping a section of the hose, from right near the air outlet (machine end) place it in an airtight bag for preservation. The hose doesn't go back but bit hard to put an entire hose in an airtight bag. I just worry and I said it a few days ago, if it's all sent back u have no later evidence. You may be fine now, but everyone knows carcinogens are often years later. They would have great lawyers. Keep proof. I also said earlier, if you decide to keep it and use, maybe think twice, I think it could legally alleviate Phillips of any wrong. From the minute they put the warning out and advised "cease " using, if you continue to use... They covered themselves to a degree. Ignore their advice, show illness later???? In Australia we are lucky we can rent in the meantime. When the time comes I would send it back without the foam. They know its the recalled item. They know some countries will be slow and you had delays. Even if yhe foam has been removed, im sure you will still get it replaced. But keep it. Don't toss it out. Don't dump the machine

Nick, Just an FYI. Although I haven’t seen it other than on your KZbin video, the housing where the foam is enclosed may be assembled by a process called “ultrasonic welding”. This process uses high frequency radio waves and special tooling to vibrate the components as they are pressed together. This actually heats up the plastic components and melts the pieces together. Disassembly of the components is usually very difficult, and can be rather destructive. (I worked at a company which used this process experimentally for assembling bearings.) It is possible that the housing on this device could be assembled using an adhesive; however, it seems unlikely because adhesives frequently have some type of “offgassing” which occurs after assembly. This offgassing would require some “curing“ time before all the “bad stuff” from the adhesive process would be dissipated. Since this device is for human breathing air, it seems that ultrasonic welding would be a better choice than an adhesive system. The ultrasonic welding process could also result in some “offgassing“ due to the melted plastic during the assembly process, but I believe that offgassing would dissipate quickly as the plastic solidifies after assembly. I agree with your recommendation that we should move away from the Phillips corporation. They should never have sold a device which was not completely tested and safe for the life of the device. It should not take 12 years for them to determine that there is a problem. Thanks for your work on this and providing a well done video.

I have 2 of the machines affected by the recall. I just replaced my old one the first of this year. I called my cpap supplier and was told to contact my Doctor and insurance company. I am very frustrated after dishing out what money the insurance company wouldn't cover for the new machine. If I sleep without my machine I have horrible headaches from the lack of oxygen. I just want to make sure my wife and kids are well aware of the negligence on the part of Phillips for putting this machine on the worldwide market. I am in the United States and I see people from any counties are in the same boat I am in. Next step is to get my Doctor to help me fight the insurance company to get a new machine as it looks like Phillips is in no hurry.

If you are interested in posting a couple in an upcoming video I could share them with you. I would do it but have no idea how to make a You Tube video. Secondly, I'm 70 years old and I want people to know if I could complete the foam removal process that anyone is capable of doing the same. Thanks for the video and it got me thinking if it could be done differently. It is well encased inside, but the coat hanger method worked for me without drilling any holes. (I watched another vid that showed his attempt.) I think if your foam is still intact, the coat hanger method is tedious but works. If the foam is degraded by ozone or age, it may be better cutting holes. I really pray for all of you out there and thanks for the great videos from down under!

@@CPAPReviews thanks for the reply. I know they do not deserve our business anymore and I will never buy anything from them again, but, as you said, some of us cannot afford to go out and get new equipment. Insurance companies and DME's are very hard to deal with as they would rather rent the equipment to you forever and then starts the process of non-payment and bills to you and so on and so forth... The doctors then have some strange need to send you back to sleep studies before they will prescribe anything again... It's an arduous cycle that some of us would rather not deal with or don't have the insurance or money to afford. I did have an old Elite II as a backup and was using that, but the Dreamstation was quieter and I felt I breathed better at night with that one. So, I embarked on the journey. Technically, since I did not cut holes, maybe I did not follow your instructions??? Have a great day!! Peace.

And they're also saying this could continue forever! WTF! I can't believe people have been going to bed every night getting pumped full of these chemicals. It's an absolute disgrace! . Nick

Hey Nick, tried to take the foam out of my DS1 today, what I thought would be a 20 minute exercise, turned into a 3hr nightmare. When I opened the machine up there were pieces of "foam" in with the motor!! Upon making the cuts in the chamber, I found pulling the foam out was a no go, it was a sticky tar-like substance and only about 2/3 were in the chamber, I guess I inhaled the rest of it, what was left came out in pieces and was smeared all over! I've been breathing this shite for 4 years, no wonder my COPD and asthma have gotten much worse! I saved some of it, just in case I file a future lawsuit and the foam chamber on mine any, is NOT isolated from the motor chamber, so cutting on top, like you first did, wouldn't make a difference!! CHEERS!!!!!

Thank you for your in depth analysis and information regarding the recall. It is interesting to see exactly where the foam resides and you clearly state 'do not try this yourself' BUT there may be some who will nevertheless attempt to try this. Your modification will effect the air flow in at least two major ways: 1) The holes which you have cut and not patched will leak air and therefore the pressure levels being set and monitored will not be accurate as defined by the controller. If you did try to plug these up this may pose a similar issue as the foam e.g. if you try to use a toxic glue or tape 2) The foam has a purpose to defuse the air and this also effects the pressure. Getting rid of the foam will also cause the same issues as #1.

Hi Peter, if you read the description and the comment pinned you can make the holes on the inside walls where the motor sits. This way when you screw back in the casing lid it seals it all up. I just tapped mine but the holes on the inside are best and i know hundreds of viewers who have done it and none are having any problems. It's not for everyone but for some people it's far safer than breathing in carcinogenic fumes night after night. Cheers for your insights. Nick

I have had my DreamStation 1 for 2 years now and have experienced very bad allergies with extreme running nose and watery eyes. As soon as this happened I discussed with my provider and then my Dr. both who had nothing of the sort with these modern CPAPs and their silicon based masks ( I do in no way have a silicon allergy ). I have been unable to use my DreamStation very much as this is reoccurring thing. NOW, it may all make sense based on the foam.

I took mine apart and repaired it. I made the smallest hole I could with a drill bit and managed to get both pieces of foam out without much trouble.I used a piece of copper wire (Romex electrical wire) and formed a small hook on the end to grab the foam. I used aluminum foil tap (HVAC Table *NOT DUCT tape*) to seal each hole. Upon inspecting this device I noticed the air DOES NOT TRAVEL THROUGH THE FOAM. The foam sits above the intake air chamber and not in it. However, the bottom of each foam block makes up the ceiling of the air chamber so the foam is exposed to the air chamber. I noticed no degradation of the foam and there were no particles to be found in the unit. My dream-station is almost 5 years old and I typically sleep 11-12 hours a night so this thing has got a lot of use. If the foam does degrade it will get in the air stream and so will the fumes. Honestly, I thinks the problem is related to ozone generators (cleaners). I don't run ozone through my machine.

Hi Anthony, well done. I would also like to add that it's certainly best to make the holes on the inside walls where the motor sits so that when you put the casing lid back in it completely seals the chamber. Air being a gas and foam being foam, since they share the same space the air does mix with the foam. Here's some information you might be interested in. - “The results of testing performed by Philips indicate that the PE-PUR sound abatement foam used in these devices may emit certain chemicals. Our investigation to date indicates that this emission occurs during initial operation and may possibly continue throughout the device's useful life” So basically Philips have gone and tested a brand new DS1 machine and found that it’s emitting ‘certain chemicals’ and this could continue throughout the life of the machine. That’s fucked up! Imagine sucking down some dodgy carcinogenic foam chemicals for 8 hours a night, year after year! The #foamgate saga just keeps getting worse the further down the rabbit hole we go..... Take care

Appreciate Nicko's video and he does a good job showing how to disassemble the Dreamstation machine, but I removed mine without cutting any holes in the casing. I used a clothes hangar method another youtuber posted to pull the foam out the existing ports of the tray and was really pleased how it does not damage the turbo fan casing. Have been using mine a couple weeks since doing so and have not noticed any difference in air pressure and barely any difference in sound. Only slightly louder, but has not bothered me at all and I usually am a light sleeper. My machine was not leaving black pieces in the airway and the foam appeared fine visibly inside the machine, however when I removed it, it had a chemical oily feel, almost wet feeling, which makes me worried how many machines are this way and despite visibly appearing fine may be putting off chemicals? For me personally, any foam in the airway is just a bad idea and I don't want the risk versus the machine being slightly louder, even the new kind. As it's on the inside after the filters, there's nothing to stop from breathing it in if it breaks down. One tip I found when removing is working the hangar to the back of foam and pulled the whole thing till it was bunched up to the tube I was fishing the wire through before trying to fish it down the tube and out. It went much easier and tore/broke the foam a lot less. Once I got it to the edge of the hole, I used needle nose plyers to grab and pull out slowly. Going slow and applying steady pressure when fishing it out also seemed to work best, as the foam will slowly move and not tear as much. All in all, it took me about 1.5 hrs to break machine down, remove foam, wash the tray really well (MADE SURE I REMOVED ANY FOAM DEBRIS OR PIECES, I shined a flashlight all along the plastic, the pieces showed up as black specs when I shined under casing as I looked) and reassemble. Took some patience, but I think it was well worth the time and I sleep much better now knowing it's out!

Hi, Nick, Nice to see the video. I didn't follow it as could be a little bit complicated warranty issue, I'm still waiting for the respond from Philips. Instead of pulling out the foam, I took a piece of Non-woven fabric by cutting it from a disposable medical mask as a sigle fileter lay AND insert it into the intersection of two parts (the rubber O'ring of outlet and the inlet of water tank). I belive this filter lay would work for filiting any small partice from "foam" , at least before my old dreamstation updated. The filter lay can be checked each day after using and see if any dast on it, just like we ware a mask to keep us from enhale dask from air. I have to and still using my dreamstation by adding this filter lay after realising the philips recall, so far so good . Hope it could be any help. Best whished, Shine

@@CPAPReviews Sorry, this could end up becoming a long post. My DS1 was out of warranty anyway so whatever. It went out of warranty one month before the recall. Fancy that, eh!? Anyway between the start of the recall and now I have not been using my DSS1. I did have the privilege to try an Airsense 10 and a F&P Icon Novo. I could not replicate the rested feeling I got from the DS1, The fog went away but I was tired all day long sadly. I should note that I have been tested for Obstructive Apnea twice. The first time I had an AHI of 48. The second time, 15. Between the two I lost 30 lbs. At this point though my doctor is inclined to get me tested for Central Apnea. This means starting the testing all over again. I'm hopeful that I can finally get back to some restful sleep with the DS1 (for now). Not really sure which other CPAP machine to consider if I can't get any beneficial results.

Thanks to you and your attention to detail and explanation in a cadence that was just right. I took several photos from every angle of the major disgusting mess within the housing. Question. As you know, every legal firm you can imagine posts ads to FB to solicit a consult for a case. How are we to know who to turn to? Class action suits go on and on for years, even decades and plaintiffs, at the end of the day get a check for $1.80 in US dollars. Would it be the best option to get an attorney for just my case?

some pro tips for foam removal, not that I am any kind of pro, but I just did it for myself. My machine just needed a #9 torx, long needle nose pliers, pick and a drill. Pro tip number one make your holes inside where the motor goes, so no patching will be required. Use the pick to grab the end of the foam and work it into the hole you made so you can attempt to get it out in one piece. do not try to grab it in the middle unless you have a huge hole. I drilled the hole with a 1/2 inch bit. Be careful not to damage the sealing surface. The piece on the left usually comes out in two pieces because it is captured by a plastic rivet for lack of a better word. Save your foam in a zip lock baggie for the lawsuit:)

Thank you for sharing your insightful video. I think you should seal up the holes you made to extract the foam because if not, inflow air will go through the holes you made and not through the dedicated filtered air in-let hole. Unless the design of the machine is different regionally, it means this foam problem is global and not limited to the US. Yet the medical recall is only directed at the US. The company may have its reason for not making it a global recall if the design of the machine is same world over. I stand corrected for vocalising my inner thoughts. Again, many thanks for making and sharing so generously you rich knowledge.

Another appreciative viewer here with comments & a question. Especially using the 1/2" drill in the chamber sides, it appears the foam can be quite difficult to remove completely if it started deteriorating- which I expect mine has- even though I never used ozone to clean the DreamStation. Only used water & dish detergent. I've suffered considerable chest congestion with much phlegm and coughing for about 2 years and my pulmonary doctor's only (unsuccessful) answer has been nasal sprays and inhalers. Note I'm currently trying to connect with another provider. Prior to learning of the recall, I stopped using the machine a month ago and have been using a nebulizer with moderate improvement. So how many have or haven't encountered difficulty removing the foam & had it started deteriorating at that point?

Thanks Nick for showing us what's inside this beast (not nearly enough to justify the price tag, in my opinion!). I removed the foam from my machine, but did so by drilling a 3/8" hole in each of the two chambers containing foam. The drill bit automatically wrapped the foam around itself, then I was able to pull it up through the holes I had created, using a very long and thin pair of needle nose pliers. Next it was outside to the back yard to blow all of the foam particles out and away using a simple hair dryer set on cool air and high air flow. Finally I covered the two holes with a couple of pieces of high quality vinyl electrical tape. Reassembled the whole thing and it seems to work fine!

I would *not* use electrical tape. The adhesive on that stuff tends to break down in a significant way within a couple years. Also, who knows what kind of stuff the tape will offgas over time. You've replaced one risk for another. I would not use any kind of tape or adhesive for re-sealing cutouts -- they'll all deteriorate and offgas over time, which will go straight into your lungs. The best thing to do would be to put the cutouts on the inner wall of the ring, as another user suggested. That way it all gets re-sealed by the cover that goes over the blower motor, and you've basically just added a couple new inlets to the impeller which still fully utilize the original filtration port.

@@Jimpenny Was *all* of the foam sticky, or only one side? From what I've seen from other photos and videos, there's an adhesive or glue that is stuck to just one side of the foam, likely to keep it in place during manufacture until the chamber is fused together. If your foam was sticky and decomposing all the way around, that's not good at all. Do you use an ozone cleaner like a SoClean?

Okay guys so here's the only fact that matters here! Information straight form the recall page on the Canadian Health Govt Website - Issue number 2 is the worse! "Philips has become aware of two (2) issues that may pose a risk for patients or users of Philips Respironics branded Continuous Positive Airway Pressure (CPAP), Bi-Level Positive Airway Pressure (BIPAP), and Mechanical Ventilators: 1. Philips has determined from user reports and testing that the Polyester-Based Polyurethane (PE-PUR) sound abatement foam used in Philips continuous and non-continuous ventilators may degrade under certain circumstances, and the degraded particles could potentially enter the air pathway of the device. This issue affects Philips Respironics branded CPAP’s, Bi-Levels, and Mechanical Ventilators. 2. The results of testing performed by Philips indicate that the PE-PUR sound abatement foam used in these devices may emit certain chemicals. Our investigation to date indicates that this emission occurs during initial operation and may possibly continue throughout the device's useful life. These issues impact all device product platforms manufactured with Polyester Polyurethane (PE-PUR) sound abatement foam" So let me break this down so it's easier to understand. Basically Philips have gone and grabbed a brand new DS1 off the shelf, turned it on and tested the air coming out of it. They have determined from this that machine is 'emitting certain chemicals' and that this happens from day 1 and may continue for the life of the machine! Now from the U.S recall page they have stated these are 'carcinogenic' chemicals. So from day one, your machine is pumping you full of carcinogenic chemicals and this could continue night after night for the life of the machine. This is the reason for the recall! They are using the ozone / foam break down as a smoke screen to hide the real reason which that it doesn't matter how you clean your device or what the weather is...From day 1...It's bad for you! Stay tuned and good luck

@@newbeequilter It’s a good time to become handy with tools or make friends with someone who is. Fixing one of the cpaps is not difficult. Anybody can do it with a torx set and a Dremel tool or a small keyhole saw. In the last two days I’ve done my CPAP my brothers CPAP and my best friend CPAP

There would be a time limit, say about 2 years or so. I used to work in the copier/fax industry for a major manufacturer and this is how it goes: Several times we had to recall 3 or more million units due to safety issues. Not everyone sends in the units. Some people will just keep using the unit. Some people will stop using it and buy another modified unit. Some people will say "F You" to the company and buy another brand. ETC ETC You have to make the customer jump thru hoops to be eligible for the recall. Then you're down to 1 million units or hopefully much less. The customer would be given a choice to ship back the unit OR maybe have credit towards another newer model or opt out due to lengthy time issues. Then the company quantifies the repair work and divides up the repair work to several locations in the USA (or wherever). The company will then do the repairs and try to have it all done within 3 - 6 months(as an example). They would hire outside temp workers to do all the repairs at a small cost to the company. Then ship repaired units back to the customer. Hope that helps.

@@DanaTheInsane Have you experienced any machine performance issues since removing the foam? Just saw a comment mentioning pressure issues after foam removal.

THANK YOU for all your info...I purchased the DS1 in part on your recommendation (you were also more helpful even than the medical equipment supplier on what mask to ultimately choose!) Even before "Foamgate" the DS2 is definitely several steps backward in terms of features and engineering. And if Phillips did know about the foam issue before they built the DS2, then why on EARTH didn't they just separate the foam from the passageway where the air goes through? The foam is to muffle the turbine, not the sound of the airflow. As soon as you opened it up (great vid, BTW, and even more helpful to see that they've done the same dang thing with the DS2, that was what struck me...separate the air flow chamber from the section with the foam, and it's a simple fix (and a lot better than finding out 7 years further down the road that your new non-carcinogenic foam is actually carcinogenic after all...)

You're very welcome and my apologies for recommending the DS1 to you. It really all comes down to one thing! Polyurethane foam - “The results of testing performed by Philips indicate that the PE-PUR sound abatement foam used in these devices may emit certain chemicals. Our investigation to date indicates that this emission occurs during initial operation and may possibly continue throughout the device's useful life” So basically Philips have gone and tested a brand new DS1 machine and found that it’s emitting ‘certain chemicals’ and this could continue throughout the life of the machine. That’s NOT GOOD! Imagine sucking down some dodgy carcinogenic foam chemicals for 8 hours a night, year after year. The #foamgate saga just keeps getting worse the further down the rabbit hole we go. Best wishes and thanks for the kind words. Nick

We use kitchen sponges made from walnut shell fibers. Cutting one/two of these to conform to the foam space works well and the sponge foam is totally organic and does not gas VOCs.

Thank you very much. As an interim fix, I am attempting to make an inline air filter that should filter out the foam if it ever breaks loose.

Kelvin, there are numerous in-line filters available, search on ebay or any search engine.

1) The access hole should be on the top of the foam compartment. Some of the commenters are suggesting that the access hole should be on the interior wall of the foam compartment so it will be sealed from leaking outside air by the motor compartment cover. However, this is dangerous because it will allow fumes from the motor to leak into the breathing air supply. This could be especially dangerous if the motor starts to fail and begins to smolder. 2) Use a hot knife or a utility knife to cut through the plastic in the foam compartment. The abrasive wheel on the Dremel hand grinder that you used makes too much plastic particulate to clean up afterward. 3) Do not sand the edges of the access hole makes too much plastic dust and removes valuable material that you will need later to seal the hole edges. 4) As suggested by one of the video commenters, cut a tab (three sided cut) access hole rather then a complete hole. This allows you to peel back the tab and remove the foam while retaining a "lid" for re-sealing the filter compartment afterward. Make sure the tab is a lot longer then it is wide. 5) Thoroughly clean out the foam compartment with Q-tips and alcohol prior to resealing. 6) Close the access holes by folding the tab back into place and tacking it down with a soldering iron or hot blade type screw driver. Once the access tabs are back in place seal completely around the edges with a soldering iron or hot blade to prevent air leakage. Do not use glues or tapes because of chemicals in the adhesives.

I have been looking for a non off-gassing glue to do this modification…still looking. Didn’t consider a soldering iron.

What about putting a medical grade tube between the air intake vent (where the replaceable filters are) up to the motor so that your air is not crapped up too much by the plastic housing?
