No one, including ResMed or Philips, should have access to anybody's medical data without written permission from the patient. If what the companies are doing, collecting your data without permission isn't illegal, it ought to be - in my opinion.

I sussed this out not long after I bought my airsense 10. Had a leaky mask and started getting emails from the manufacturer providing tips on how to fix it. Sounds really helpful but being in a technical occupation immediately I was concerned about privacy. Within a week I had pulled the machine apart, disconnected the modem and asked the manufacturer to delete the data. Unfortunately the big companies are getting bolder and bolder with this sort of thing.

Hi Russell, thanks for your great comment. I Agree that it's definitely helpful and it has to be said that it has really improved patient outcomes and compliance but i still don't think that justifies the automatic collection, storage and use of someones sleep health data without asking their permission. It's just ethically poor business practices in my opinion. They would probably find if they informed people in a nice and honest way that most people would probably opt into the service if they knew it was helping make the products better etc. Cheers
@CPAPReviews3 жыл бұрын
Hi Everyone, i just want to clarify something. I'm 100% okay with companies collecting / 'safely' storing / using / distributing you health data so long as they ask for your permission to do so or at the very least, give you a heads up that they are in fact doing it. Given the choice, most of you would probably be happy to help the likes of ResMed improve their products and services by providing your sleep health information but when companies just assume they have the right to YOUR PERSONAL HEALTH DATA and collect it without proper informed consent? I don't think it's ethically right. Cheers

It’s a two sided issue. Opt-in in regards to HIPAA in the USA for patient privacy, insurance companies are already removing benefits from non-compliant patients. Our insurance system is already irretrievably broken and inaccessible to so many people it’s a human rights violation. On the other hand, data analysis is the cornerstone of cpap therapy. More data means recognizing more previously undetected diseases processes and opens a door to treat those issues. Billions of nights of data is far more than any single sleep lab or doctor has seen in a routine care setting. That is a massive benefit of data collection. The other option is to buy a machine outright (which I did myself) because dealing with the insurance company and all their red tape is a nightmare. Being able to get one is a privilege most Americans cannot afford financially as we no longer have a middle class. Patients should not ever be forced to share their private health details with any corporate overlord, ever. If patients want to opt-in for the connectivity, DIY treatment, beta testing new algorithms, that is an incentive worth pursuing. But simply collecting data and never rolling out updates, new tech on existing machines in the field, or releasing a new machine with nothing more than a facelift puts ResMed kind of on my poo list now. Such a let down. Their app sucks too.

Hay!! From Texas. As a airline pilot I have been monitored for years ( 6:30 a night every night 365 or Uncle Sam says you can't work.) and have enjoyed the ease of use of the ResMed WiFi.. But that stops the day they make it cellular and store it in the cloud. But its not just the Cpap machine. Garage door openers tell the cloud when you came home. Your doorbell tells the cloud whos at your door and everything on all your computers and cellphones is stored in the cloud.

If my sleep data were to reveal that I require cpap therapy to function effectively, I would be more concerned about how that data could be used. My case is quite mild, though. On the other hand, any data - regardless of how weak it is - can be used as a justification for a denial of an insurance claim, and fighting that determination would add billable hours to a defence attorney's invoice. 🤔

ResMed is emulating Apple in involuntary data gathering. I take exception at having no say or offered the option to allow permission in used and storage data. @@jammiewha5942 Thanks, I am still around. A bit of context might be required for you to understand my assertions regarding penalisation for self management of air pressures. P.S - I'm a little embarrassed i didn't think of this for the video but you can just turn on FLIGHT MODE on your device and it will stop communication with ResMed servers / cloud. According to their website anyway - How does Airplane Mode affect data transmission? A. Airplane Mode disables the AirSense 10, AirCurve 10 and Lumis machine’s wireless connectivity* and makes data transmission to AirView™ temporarily unavailable. It will also prevent transmission of data to your myAir™ program. You will need to let your ResMed Authorised Dealer or your physician know you are going overseas, because the data will stop streaming to their AirView account while you’re away.

As someone who sees sleep apnea patients regularly, imagine what would happen regularly if people with sleep apnea are not using their devices on the roads. Not too long ago there was a severe accident that involved a celebrity where several people died because the truck driver supposedly had sleep apnea and was not using his cpap machine causing him to fall asleep behind the wheel. Look at the number of trucks on the road and if even half of them have sleep apnea and not using their cpap machine, how safe do you think the roads would be then. The down side i can see of disconnecting the modem is getting firmware updates for your machine. If i had one of theses machines this is the options i would probably go for (1) Unplugging the modem rather than going for flight mode with SD card in because the data would still be uploaded the moment you went out of flight mode. (2) With modem unplugged and SD card still in you can still give your doctor the data from the SD card. (3) You could go for stay in flight mode with SD card in but if you need to do a firmware update you can remove the SD card back it up on your PC or another devices then delete the SD card and put it back or just remove SD card while doing a firmware update then go back to flight mode

But yes in the event of accident the insurance company can demand to see any sleep apnea data. My machine does not transmit it anywhere. But I still need to download the data and email it to my specialist. I guess the good news is when your in control of your own data let's just say my machine malfunctioned and I could only retrieve one week of data showing above average use 😁 then that's what has to be accepted. I keep my gear clean but wondering if this would be equal to manual cleaning and much less painful. What is painful is the cost of this thing, if you know what I mean! Great job, love your vids!

Hey Justin, appreciate that mate. No i have yet to do a review on the device but what put me off was the cost and also all the little parts / components you need to buy for the different machines etc. I would just hold off on the ozone cleaners for the time being. There's a bit of news around them that perhaps they could be causing a few issues with some devices. Cheers

I was told when I got my CPAP a couple of weeks ago that I need to get 8 hrs on the machine so many nights per month (I'm fuzzy at what that number was now) or my insurance wouldn't cover their portion. I've been wondering ever since how they would KNOW! So, now I know, I guess!

Gathering data is fine and can help produce a great product and better therapy outcomes. However, it’s my data. If I could be compensated toward my next pap unit in the form of a discount would be great for the company and the patient. Cheers!

Hi Bill, here in Australia you can purchase the ResMed software called ResScan which is what the clinicians use to download and print of those extensive reports. It's about $30 from memory. Also there's some other software called OSCAR which use to be called SleepyHead which some people also use :-). Take care. Nick

i believe to be a truck driver you are generally blacklisted from operating a truck if you have sleep apnea... the sleep doctor i seen told me that it was still possible, but that he would have to give a medical letter stating the OSA is under control etc.. so yes it definitely can and is already used against you, however now they are wanting it to cover more areas then high risk work.... then we have the question of the new tests the police are bringing in - the test for fatigue etc... will anyone with sleep apnea be allowed to drive if their OSA is not controlled fully?... will they see never ending fines etc if they cannot get the best nights sleep ever?

I wonder how what percentage of CPAP machines are purchased, in whole or in part, by insurance. If insurance helped pay for it, then it does have a claim on that data too. I just wish with all that data they've gathered they'd be able to figure out a better algorithm by now.

Psychologists suggest that one test of a healthy relationship is the ability to say no. It sounds like this is a toxic relationship. Psychologists also suggest that the best way to cope with a toxic relationship is to go no contact. Too bad we're dependent on them for our life. Maybe we need an independent manufacturer who is more interested in a healthy relationship. Any volunteers?

PPS: I noticed you started collecting data too. Are you trustworthy? Will you respect patient privacy rights? Have you considered creating an app that people can use in the privacy of their own homes on their own computer without sharing it with the world (cloud/server)? Thanks for all you do. Good job.

You could always build a Faraday Cage to go around your CPAP. It would still need airflow so don't wrap the entire thing in tinfoil ! A big metal pasta strainer should do the trick. Also, make sure your Insurance has paid off the machine. Otherwise they could charge you for the machine.

Great video, if you open and disconnect a the modem from a CPAP unit like the Reamed 10/11 does that void your warranty? Does it void your warranty if you open up your device in anyway? How about if you get an authorized repair shop to do it? On that last question, how do you know if a place is an authorized repair facility?

Hi Jordan, i imagine if you fart it probably violates ResMed's warranty. They can't prove anything mate. It's very simple to disconnect the modem however you can also just turn 'flight mode' on in the setting which also works. Cheers legend. Nicko

Hate companies taking my personal information without allowing me an option. Google is hugely ugly to me in how pervasive they intrude into collecting information. I opt out of almost everything I can garner, that companies save and sell, share my info. From my electric company, credit card, and grocery app. What are we to do if not given an option.... is to make our own best decision. I would love to be able to disable my modem. But my insurance and my doctor need me to be held compliant in my health care for now.

Hey Nick, Do you know if the dreamstation 2 has a sd card slot? I heard that the resmed 11 will not. I use Oscar to check my progress and tweak my machine so I hope that they don’t do away with the sd card.
@CPAPReviews3 жыл бұрын
Yeah the DS2 does although in a strange sort of spot. It also has like a hidden little usb connector but it's really hard to find (probably on purpose). You really only need your AHI values at the end of the day mate and it's not something you need to check that often (once a month perhaps) and if it's an auto then probably even less. Put it this way, the body can put up with a hell of a lot of abuse (Keith Richards for example) and a few periods of abnormal breathing is not going to have a big impact on your health and well being so don't get to fanatic about the whole thing. Cheers mate. Nick

Unfortunately, the DS2 is not currently compatible with OSCAR, i.e., it will not read the data from the SD card. The OSCAR developers are working on making it work with the DS2, but I haven't heard anything on how long it will take.

What I object to is that the Resmed data is false. I put on my mask at around 10:00 pm. I take it off at 5:30 am (unless I have a bathroom break in the night) and yet the data says I used it for 3 or 4 hours quite often. It's never totally accurate. I'm on my third resmed loaner that my provider has rented to me while my Phillips is under the recall. My Phillips did not have this problem. I can't wait to get back to the Phillips. If the sleep time is incorrect, how can I trust the AHI data???

my data is exactly that.. my data!!! thus it should be my decision to share such data. i think its also wrong that they try to prevent people buying a fixed cpap without first seeing a report to "set the pressure for the patient" and that they try to hide the clinical menu in the first place instead of teaching the patient how it works and some tips on things to change.. thankfully youtube videos show how to access these things

I don't necessarily care that they can read my data. It's not like it contains any credit card info or things like that. And my doctor does need access to that in order to adjust my therapy. HOWEVER, what I do find annoying at the least, is that they don't give you the same access to your own readings. AND, they lock a ton of settings away from the user. Admittedly, some people wouldn't have a clue what they were doing and might set their own therapy back, but some settings have no reason not to be available.

Bit of scare-mongering there, methinks. Not all machines have the 'modem' card. For example, my AirSense10 AutoSet doesn't have it. There was/is an option card to enable WiFi connectivity. However rather expensive. Some units came with it, others didn't. Depended where in the world the unit was marketed for. On another note, for ease of retrieving data and instead of having to remove the SDcard, I bought a USB plugin module. No longer available though.
