It’s true, and Michael Jordan, to his great credit, acknowledges it. He defends Bird whenever anyone says anything negative about him, and calls him the best small forward of all time. Bird is always listed in Jordan’s top five. He also says Bird taught him how to trash talk and how to get in to opponents’ minds. Without that, Michael maybe wouldn’t be what he became. Bird pushed him to find that extra gear that he didn’t know he had, and Jordan loves him for it.

As a rookie, Bird was ROY (63 votes to Magic's 3), and was 4th in the 1980 MVP voting. The next 3 years -- 1981, 82, and 83 -- he came in second in the MVP voting. He won MVP the next 3 years (84, 85, 86), was 3rd in 1987, then 2nd again in 1988. Before injuries caught up with him in 1989, he was indisputably the best player in the NBA in the 1980s.

Great job Cpskii. I'm a Bulls fan. I HATED Larry Bird. We could NEVER beat him, not even with MJ. While we were playing checkers, he was playing 3 dimensional chess. I did respect him and have always proclaimed him as the most Clutch player in NBA history. King of the 40/50/90 club. I don't think there's an actual G.O.A.T but if so I've got MJ #1, Bird 1A (sorry LeBron). His Airness and Legend!!!! 🏀

Larry is 6'9" tall. Bird and Jordan met in the playoffs twice. The Celtics swept the Bulls both times, 3-0, 3-0. Jordan was a non factor. I think Michaels biggest flaw is that he HAD TO HAVE THE BALL! Jordan had to be the hero at the expense a team loss! Who is the best, most skilled player ever? That would be Jordan. But, as Bird always said; "They pay me to win games." and that was Larrys' focus.

Yes, big Bird fan here, but Larry always gave Jordan the respect he deserved, once saying "that wasnt Micheal Jordan out there, it was God disguised as Michael Jordan" - and another time Jorday called Larry "white Jesus"--- Both had high respect for each other
@TheMule71
@TheMule71 6 сағат бұрын
Yeah but you have to tell the story right. He was grinning with malice when Larry said that. It wasn't directed at Jordan per se, it was directed at all the loosers who were beaten by Jordan and used to bring that up as an excuse... so when MJ put on that show against the Celtics, Larry made sure to win the game anyway. It's a completely different mood. One thing is to say "MJ is God, it's not our fault if we lost". One thing is to say "MJ is God" as the winners. So while he didn't say that out aloud, the message was "That wasn't MJ out there, it was God diguised as MJ. But not even God was enough to beat us tonight." And he was right. That night, it was God who walked away with the L. That is not to say they don't respect the hell of one another, today. But at the time, it was all mind games, and Larry was the Master.

Something to note: bulls were ranked 10 in their conference the las 3 seasons before MJ. celtics were the strongest team, apart from larry bird, they had 1 consistent first all defense team (Kevin McHale from 85-88) and 1 not so consistent but was on the first or second defensive team (Dennis Johnson from 80-87) that celtics had 4 HOF: Larry Bird, Robert Parish, Kevin McHale and Dennis Johnson, 3 of them considered top 50 in NBA HOF. Bird was a beast, but had a team that was strong even without him (about his back injury)

Bird Has Even Said, That Jordan Is Great BUT Until He Learns To Play As A Team Player He Won't Get His Titles. And Finally, Jordan Listen, It Only Took Him 7-Years BUT Once He Finally Got It, Well The Rest Is History. Larry Walked Into The NBA Knowing How To Do That With His Teammates. Bird's 2nd Year He Got Them The Title. And Yes Still To This Day 2024, Bird Is Still The Last To Have Won 3-MVP'S Three Years In A Row. So May Question Is What Is Taking All Of These Great Athletic Players From The 90's, 2000's & All The Way Up To Day 2024, So Long To Get 3-MVP'S, Three Years In A Row.??? ha ha ha. Because NO One Sense Has Bird's Highest Ever BB IQ + Wit + Also They Don't Have His All Around Skills, Love Of The Game & Winning. He Was Never "It's All About Me, Me & Me" Thinking. Team Winning Was Bird. His Thinking Was "We Win As A Team & We Loose As A Team".

@@Cpski4...check the rosters of other teams. You calling Chamberlain, Lanier, Pettit, Willis Reed, Jerry West, Elgin Baylor, Big O, Gail Goodrich, etc etc etc bums? Most of these guys coulda gone into the NFL or the MLB and were approached by teams of other sports but chose the lower-paying NBA for sheer love of the game. And if they played today or in the 80s? They would be the beneficiaries of the same sports training and sports medicine and equipment that today's powderpuff athletes are. And fewer teams meant a higher concentration of talent. In one of Jordan's Finals victories, Steve Kerr's 3. point shooting saved several key games. Russell told Jordan that the Bulls would never have won that series in 1965. Jordan asked why. "Kerr would never have made the NBA in 1965. He isn't good enough night in, night out over 82 games to last." And the inventor of the modern NBA, Auerbach, the one true genius in team sports in North America, said, "Russell first, then Bird, then everyone else in the history of the sport. In ANY sport." And Auerbach was also the guy who invented trash-talking and looking at opponents as THE ENEMY. The Celtics, could have replaced that ancient parquet floor at any time after 1957, but it had dead spots, and Celtic guards were trained in maneuvering opponents to them, then stealing the ball when it didn't bounce back up. Bums????? If Russell played bums, then he played WITH bums, too. And Tom Brady doesn't have 7 rings because he played against OBVIOUSLY more talented quarterbacks and athletes. And Russell only has 2 state high school championships, 2 NCAA rings, an Olympic Gold, and 11 NBA TITLES because of...? His teammates? He was decent but everyone else was awful? Everyone else was only five feet tall? A genius coach? I know. He only got every title in existence because of America's Diversity In Rewriting History Act of 2021, wherein history books got rid of slavery, the Civil War and and decided that a black man deserved to be the greatest every and stripped Jerry West of all 11 titles and gave them to Russ. After all, Jerry West is Mr. Logo. And he was a Laker.

Yeah MJ was drafted in april of 1984, these games were in July. Magic called him after those games the best NBA player today and MJ didn't even step foot on an NBA court. NO one in any sport who is one of the greatest players in said sport would praise any rookie that much, but those dudes knew a new sheriff was in town. One guy isn't beating a team with 5 HOF players who are considered one of the best all time teams with a top 5 or so defense all time. Those mid 80's bulls were all druggies and alcoholics, they only got to the playoffs because of MJ. No one ever mentions how the bulls were one of the worst teams in ANY sport back then. Wished those celtics could have played the 90's Bulls.
