Religion was and is a salve for the fear of the death of existence, not the fear of the end of life. Cogito sum is a not just a blessing, but a curse. If you think that once you die that's it, everything ends, a lot of people will despair, they will seek to ratify a reason for their mind, their existence to go on. Inherently religion at it's birth was not bad, but like everything humans create, it can be warped and abused. Think of it like the hammer. You made it as a tool to help you build, but someone found that it can easily be used as a weapon to kill.

If this statement were true, the origin of the Universe would have to actually be a third option because that line of reasoning eliminates not just The Big Bang, but every Universe origin story in every religion there ever was, including his own.

Well God can operate outside of the laws of physics, that's how Matt Powell can set a starting point to something science can't. God was always there somehow and he just decided to snap with his fingers and create earth and humans. Oh and an entire universe. For whatever reason.
