I've bought THREE different RVs for my full-time nomadic life: A Class B+, a Class C, and a Fifth Wheel. All that buying and selling has given me perspective on mistakes I've made AND the things I did right. Today, I'll tell you how I negotiated buying an RV, used vs. new RVs, RV warranty problems, RV weight issues (GVWR, CCC, and more!), using mobile rv repair guys and HOW I held the manufacturer accountable.

I'd never give this a thumbs down, but I see some reasons, including what I thought was a pretty big/obvious one, why someone other than a hater/jealous type might give it the thumbs down. Maybe someone got offended that she flashed on the screen that she intentionally wasn't going to divulge some info they really wanted to hear. Namely, how she got them to pay her. You can be pretty sure she wants to say how, but sometimes you just can't reach a good settlement without making a deal with the devil, to not disclose the terms, or to not disparage, or to not disclose anything which might help others reach similar settlements, etc. Whether or not she played the KZbin card with them to get paid, they must have been aware of it, and eventually decided to treat her better than they'd treat the average Joe, but they were smart enough to tie it to some sort of non-disclosure. Additionally or alternatively, maybe Steve Lehto intervened for her, and they were afraid of both his legal prowess/contacts and his own KZbin influencer status. Even if she told you every detail of her negotiations and settlement, your chance of reaching the same result is probably exactly zero. So in a way, it would be useless (or even wrong) for her to say what she did and what she got, because you couldn't duplicate it. And it would be silly for her to refuse the money on principle, when all it would have gained her is the right to say "I could have gotten paid, in a situation where you couldn't have, so I turned down the money I deserved, to show solidarity with everyone else who gets ripped off". If my theory is even close to true, I think she was clearly right to take the money and clam up But reasonable minds could differ on that, and give her a thumbs down. Don't ask her to comment on this, I don't expect that she is allowed to say much more than "No comment" or "Interesting theory" if even that.

The $300 I spent for an inspection before I bought my rig was worth every penny for the peace of mind alone. Even though the inspection didn't find anything wrong with the RV, just knowing that everything had been gone over with a fine tooth comb, and having that detailed report in my hands, was worth the cost and the time involved in having it done. This is a fantastic video, Robin and very informative. I would add that, not only is it important to know how much weight your rig can carry, but it also matters how that weight is distributed over each axle. This is most obviously important for rigs that are towed, but also for drivable ones due to tire load carrying capacity. As I always told my high school math students, just about everything in life includes math, so it's important to become comfortable with basic math skills. RVing is no exception!

Dealership was so impressed they also hired them to do inspections too. Took my stove apart to find the tubing to the propane tank hadnt been connected correctly. Likely a factory mistake. My family had several of all types of RVs growing up, both new and used, and have one currently. I think what a lot of people are finding nowadays is that a lot of these rigs are built more for occasional recreation rather than living. We had lots of problems in all of our RVs and they were all different types and brands. RVs are also one of the quickest depreciating moving vehicles you can buy. You have to be really smart and figure out who's doing good work and will really stand behind their product and who isn't. As we saw from your second rig, even very recognized brands have their issues!
@toddmiller6104

I agree with you. And now, because of the pandemic, hundreds of thousands of people are buying since their children aren't in physical school. To keep up with demand, and make up for lost time from the plant closures during lock-down, most factories are churning them out so fast that the quality is suffering terribly. And even with the brands normally known for their outstanding quality. I also feel that once the pandemic winds down, there will be a glut of second-hand RVs flooding the market and the prices will plummet. For those two reasons alone, I wouldn't touch a new one right now. Just yesterday while we were looking at a fifth wheel at a dealer, another prospective buyer was struck by a falling trim beam and injured so bad the dealership had to call 911 to get an ambulance to rush the customer to the ER. Word back later was that his collarbone was shattered and his shoulder dislocated. Why did this happen? Because three one-inch staples on each end of a 14' beam was all that was holding it up. WTH? Sticker price was $139,000. Unconscionable that quality could be that bad, no matter the price. My guess is the manufacturer will likely be hearing from an attorney tomorrow. Striving to possess the newest, koolest, and "BEST" is an oxymoron in the RV world. That said...time to hitch up and boogie. Ain't nothing like it!!!!

@@toddmiller6104 That's a terrible piece of "craftsmanship"!. I worked in a trailer factory in 1978. Granted, it has been awhile, but they were made very fast and shoddy then with staples and my job was final finish. I saw how bad it was stapled together, sometimes only a few staples hitting their mark. I had a handful of clay like putty I had to put in each hole and clean the whole coach. I'm glad I didn't have any problems of getting injured like that, but I did have loose stuff and I was thinking the whole time, "how is this going to go bumping down the road without totally falling apart?" I was hoping the quality had improved by last year when we were looking at some new ones, but alas, not much better. The looks have improved, but are they screwed together better now? They price is certainly way higher, so it should be better. Our own MH has had issues with first the heater and then the a/c. CW took their sweet time and twice having to leave it sitting on their parking lot several months at a time. They are soooo slow! When we went to look at class B's, there was a new one on the lot that was the piece of trash! I was so appalled I would rather buy an empty van and use duct tape and creates to vibe it rather than pay $140,000 for their garbage. The sink was a piece of cheap, brittle plastic that only acted as a fold down slide, not a sink, and it was already broken on display! Everything in it was cheap, lacking quality enough to make it 10,000 mi without falling apart. This is disgusting and would make me want to hire someone to build mine if I didn't want to do it myself.

I know what you’re going through. It’s a tough place to be, but granddaughter will never grow up if she doesn’t get pushed out of her comfy nest. Give her a date- like January 1- that she HAS to be out by, then stick by it. In the meantime, plan your escape- which rv you want, and start looking for it. If you have to sell your house to buy the rv, contact a realtor and get the ball rolling on that, too. The granddaughter and family will get the message once the realtor starts doing the open houses. You can do it! We only get 1 life here on the earth and if your dream is a good thing, you should do it.

Kat Bunn, here is a thought to consider . . . . . unless you are being "used" as a crutch, rather than a safe harbor/ helping hand, please be patient & remember, she & her family may be your soft place one day. Not all things are as they seem & not putting GOD & family first, is why our world has been fractured. 💞👵 PS could they buy your house? Or maybe have an attorney draw up a lease or lease/purchase agreement which would give you a steady income (direct deposit from their account to yours).

Robin - You outdid yourself with this one. Your ending point is so, so, sooooo true! The key to an enjoyable RV Lifestyle is found in the enjoyable journey; not in possessing "the perfect rig!". There is no "perfect" rig. And if one thinks there is, one's focus is on the wrong target!!! The rig is a means to an end, not THE END. Yes, rigs run on a continuum from yucky, to o.k., to good, and finally, better rigs. So traverse that continuum as you will, but don't get so wrapped up waiting on finding that perfect vehicle that you miss out on the original intent. A majority of the happiest full-timers live in lesser, well-loved, and well-traveled rigs. And their bank account is bigger for it, which allows them to do more and for longer with zero stress. Make your list of needs and wants, prioritizing in that order and then find "that" in a 3-5 year old rig. And yes, not having it all-in-one has saved many a full-timer! All your "eps" are good...but you knocked it out of the park with this one Robin! Two thumbs up!!

Thank you, Robin for such an informative video. I bought an extremely low mileage used shuttle bus and had it converted into an RV. As I watched your video, I thought, “these are the reasons I didn’t want a manufactured RV. The quality of the workmanship and materials used is poor in most cases. When you do your own build (whether from a box truck, shuttle bus, school bus, ambulance, van, step van, or even horse trailer), YOU control the quality of the materials used, YOU do the work yourself or hire an excellent craftsman to build it for you. I’d love to meet you personally some day and discuss this. Did you know that buses and ambulances are among the toughest, safest vehicles on the road? Ambulances are designed to survive flip overs. School buses and senior living/church buses have tons of safety features and beefed up leaf springs. Mine was a rehab facility bus and had a commercial wheelchair lift. I needed a tractor with a heavy duty lift to get it out of the bus! I am so ok with my weight. After removing that wheelchair lift, all the seats and super heavy wheelchair-securing hardware, I don’t think I have replaced all that weight! Anyway, thanks again. Your videos inform and inspire. You are a gem❣️

Now that you have been on the road for awhile with your new 5th wheel a few questions from someone considering this lifestyle. 1. The sliders - ever had any problems? Can you manually close them or open them if they fail electronically. 2. Still happy with your 5th wheel? This option makes a lot of sense to me because you can leave it to see sights, go buy groceries, go through a drive through, escape faster if you have to and not lose your car if you require service on it.

Excellent tips on owning and buying an RV. If honesty was everyones top policy people would not have to go through all the headaches and stress. We live in an imperfect world!

The nice thing about a used RV is that I can go through and completely customize it to my taste! I don't like the styles they do RV's in, and I plan to get rid of the furniture and put in my own that I am currently building to fit the rigs that I am considering. All of the window valances have to come down, I just don't understand what the designers were thinking! I will probably paint all the surfaces (well not counters, but you know what I mean). I want to wrap the rig with my own artwork because I can't stand the swoops all the manufactures put on RV's. My rig will be a bohemian palace designed just for me! I figured the toy hauler will be perfect as it will give me an art studio. Buying new just seems like a waste to then start remodeling it right away unless the manufacture will send it to me stripped down a bit, so I don't have to undo stuff, but my redesign would void all warranties anyways, so why bother!

Sally Bruner be careful about buying used. My 2nd one was 10 years old, 20,000 miles. Drove from NC to Louisiana and had to spend $7,000 on her. Now have a 35’ class A. 2015 bought in 2017 with 4,000 miles. Going to rip out couch and replace with recliners. I am 73 and travel by myself. Love the life. You can’t build a bonfire in hotel lobby..... so go for it. Safe journeys.

The other thing about most every manufactured rig, is that they are never insulated for 4 seasons of travel. And some of the materials that they put into rigs can be rather toxic ... like some forms of foaming spray insulation, or formaldehyde boards. It's important to do your homework. Check the blogs, and get an expert inspection done. If you are going to go full-time, maybe learn to build it out DIY, or pay someone who has excellent reviews... if you have the time and money to spare, to do so. Rent rigs, first, to get an idea of how they handle and perform for you. To see if you like this life style, before you go and sell your home. If you're just a part-timer, maybe you are just better off renting them a few times a year.

Lol I’m totally guilty of falling in love with only one rv. We were looking small for our first, and I zeroed in on the rpod, not only for their weight/size, but price, charm, and community. I made mod lists, drew floorplan ideas, even started an amazon wish list full of fun decor and rpod doo dads. I had been in one before and loved it. I knew it was the one. Then I took the hubby to visit my favorite model 😔 one hop on the East/west rv queen and he shot it down and adamantly. I was so caught up with the rpod, I was ready to throw in the towel if I couldn’t get it. Talk about tunnel vision! After that, I made sure both he and I shopped together, and I refused to fall for a camper until we decided on our aframe. Scared I’m too much in love with it now though lol

Being I'm on a disability budget I've decided to go with a van. I know there can still be problems but the repair costs would be a fraction of a comparable repair of any RV. My first rig is a 2004 Nissan Altima ... broke down after two weeks and cost $400. I've bought a tiny shed/house and put in a friends yard and am regrouping my personal things from storage into that and will use as a home base until I can get a van. I'll have a place to do my van build. I did everything you and Bob suggested and it worked out well having a repair nest egg.. I have solar, dcdc charger, 1000 watt inverter, a 100 ah deep cycle battery, and the basics...plus my little dog Ichabod🐶 Great two weeks...can't wait to get back out. The stress was gone out of my life for that short period...see you on the road hopefully soon. I always enjoy your info. Thank you👍

As always... great info. I too am fulltime, was totally green, did my homework but hired a mobile tech to go over my rig before I bought it. THE DEALER WAS PISSED. Was a bit of an ordeal but I'm 18 mths in and like you have learned a lot. Lots of headaches- but still feel it's worth it. The one thing I BELIEVE... is that no rv is made for fulltime occupancy. You definitely have to shop for quality in the cabin- the chassis is just a bonus set of warranty issues sometimes. On average people buy an rv and use it maximum 6- 8 wks a yr. I do believe it's an advantage to living in it for the mere fact you know immediately when things break, need adjusted or is making "a funny noise." Also rings and seals and such dont dry out and crack as much due to sitting dry and idle. Just my 2cents.

If you plan on this type of lifestyle, this is the person you need to watch every video she puts out. I have been following her since day one. I have to tell you, I have learned a lot. Just by doing the research in buying I saw what was going on. Then, things changed as we all know and I hadn't made my move yet. Do you know how happy I am by doing my due diligence and then to see what happened in society? I haven't jumped yet, but I'm learning as I go along. I really want to make money on the road helping people with her problems. I'm good like that. The day will come, just not now, and I owe it all to following her videos. Good luck to you.

We had an electrical issue after buying our new camper that our dealer couldn't locate. After two tries, we got a mobile RV guy and he found and fixed it. Then, since we were still under warranty, he suggested we have our dealer send our bill to the manufacturer for reimbursement, since they had records of two attempts to find the problem. Luckily, the manufacturer paid us back for the repair. Mobile RV guys are good!

I know this is delayed, as you posted your video 2 weeks ago, but Patrick makes great sense and it fits exactly with your topic on buying new RVs and on the disconnect between the vendors to the manufacturers and the dealers themselves. I think you'll find it interesting, in spite of the fact that they don't live in it. Hope you don't mind the plug - it's not my channel - I just follow them as I do you and I provided them your information. I totally relate, because our first rig was a travel trailer and brand new, after 2 weeks we had water pouring out underneath. We ended up taking it back to Michigan from Texas and after 3 days they repaired it. After a year we sold it and bought a used class C. We ended up putting money into it because of issues with it. Now we're far from home and sold it in Washington state and bought a used 4 season 5th wheel. Now we're waiting for it to be delivered to us and in the meantime we're staying in a motel room waiting. The driver started out from dealership and turned around because the membrane on the roof started blowing off. Dealership still has it, and will deliver it Tues. Still can't get home until we buy a pickup truck. Oh boy!!

Wow, great video! It's refreshing when someone can come forward to recount their mistakes by which others may benefit. We're very surprised that you had the quality issues with the two motorhome manufacturers that you did which shows each RV is an individual unit and the manufacturer building it is not always a guarantee of the absence of short-term problems. Our current RV we bought used for the reasons of eliminating some of those short-term new RV problems and also depreciation which you deftly handled. 100% agreement with certified RV inspectors for new or used and we love mobile mechanics with good ratings!
