I believe his parents are tax lawyers and law professors as well, so it's really shocking he's doing interviews. As for documents, one of the big problems in this case was that he was oking spending, transfer of funds, etc, through Signal, which is an encrypted app that doesn't store messages. It basically auto-deletes stuff. So I believe most of the stuff that should have been documented wasn't. Maybe they can trace the transactions through the blockchain though. The new CEO, who specializes in cleaning up after corporate disasters and was the lead guy in cleaning up after Enron, has said this is the worst case of corporate malfeasance he's ever seen so you know it's a huge mess. I guess the only thing good about this is that most institutional investors still view crypto as very risky and therefore didn't invest money they couldn't afford to lose into FTX and Alameda, which is why we haven't seen any serious financial crisis from this outside the crypto-sphere

Some years ago, during an interview on BBC radio the chief executive of British Telecom said he could personally authorize a payment up to around £50m before it would have to be discussed in a board meeting...and British Telecom is a 'proper' business 🙂

That makes perfect sense. The Board oversees things from the highest level, in terms of overall strategies, and overall performance. Boards don't get involved in approving the details once the project has been approved. The company will have its own internal controls and checks and balances. The difference between SBF and British Telecom is that British Telecom has accounting ledgers, and audit processes. When SBF moved money, there was no internal audit trail. When the CEO of British Telecom approves a transfer, there are already 2 dozen documents recording every aspect, including fine grain detail of every business partner involved, along with Outline Agreements, Purchase Requisitions, Purchase Orders, and the transfer itself. And all of it is recorded in ledgers which are reviewed and audited.

And while the CEO of say a telco can approve such funds transfer the approval is not conducted in isolation - internal controls, senior leadership and many more parties and stakeholders will be part of that decision, even though board notification may occur only later. In fact whole corporate finance teams will be involved to actually move the funds from one place to the other. I can guarantee the CEO would not be keying in account numbers and pressing buttons to facilitate the trade.

If anyone asks for an example of self snitching, the SBF/FTX saga has to be number one. Sam did everything he shouldn't have done to avoid culpability. Instead of lawyering up and being silent, he ignored his lawyers and went public. Dude now has multiple federal agencies against him, and almost solely him. The others already took plea deals, because they shut up and cooperated once they were caught. Snitched himself so bad that he guaranteed himself a cell in white collar prison.

He is like a murderer caught at the scene of the murder with the murder weapon in his hand - the best he can hope for is a reduced sentence, which he is trying to get by seeming stupid and claiming he didn't know what was going on - a bit like a murderer going for the insanity defense.

My parents put up the 10K, no problemo-but I still had to go back in front of the judge and my parents had to bring a bunch of paperwork proving the $50K was from legitimate income. It was a 3-4 day process. I was pissed. lol

A friend of a friend killed himself last week because he realised his money was stolen by FTX. Apparently in the beginning he was confident he would get his money back. Little by little he realised his money was gone and i guess it was all too much. I hope all those FTX assholes get their comeuppance.
