It’s ok for movies to be dark and unpatriotic. Look at the original Planet of the Apes run and Terminator 1. Those are super dark and pessimistic, especially on the patriotic aspects. But they still hold out distant hope for redemption and growth. They encourage the audience to question the everyday norms without villainizing the audience.

Last night I watched the 197_ version of Superman, the one With Christopher Reeve, I was laughing and smiling like I was a kid, again. It made me feel GOOD. I'm an old woman and I could escape into a fun movie a 2 hours. Life is challenging and painful. Grief is a constant companion.. is it so wrong that our entertainment allows us a few hours of escapism, now and then? Our entertainment shouldn't always reflect our pain and misery back ion us.

I like usually enjoy the drinkers takes. That said his Barbie review completely missed the message of the movie. He kind of twisted it to fit his view of what he hates about movies right now. It sucks because I was interested to hear his take on how the Barbieland was a horrible place for the Kens. He seemed to think the writers were trying to portray it as a paradise and how the world should be, when they weren’t going for that at all. A lot of media in the 90's to early 2000's felt reflective of the tensions in the Middle East, the War on Terror and the Bush administration in general. Peter Jackson's Lord of The Rings, Star Wars prequels, Transformers, The Dark Knight, Iron Man, Call of Duty, Gears of War, Halo, and many more. The way the heroes and villains were portrayed felt familiar to what was actually happening in the world, at least from an average American's perspective. Maybe it was all propaganda or just capitalizing off the end of the post modernistic world. Still better than now, where political commentary is as deep as a pothole.

I think a lot of it has to do with what has happened in the name of the American people and on our dime; things like Abu Graib, Guantanamo, the revelations of Edward Snowden and Chelsea Manning, "weapons of mass destruction", the extrajudicial execution of American citizens under Obama and others (to say nothing of all the non-combatants killed in other countries), and the list goes on. That even if the cause was just (and it turned out the cause was predicated on deceit) "our" subsequent actions have often not been. The urge to turn one's back (at the least) on the institutions that perpetrated such things, and those that supported and those that sought to cover up those things is undeniable.

Western countries are sometimes victims of their own success when it comes to public image. We have a very open and transparent system compared to most countries, and it makes all of the dirty spots stand out. On top of that, we have been recording our history as faithfully as possible for a long time compared to other civilisations. These things have led to an epidemic of self-deprecation, guilt and faithlessness (not necessarily in the religious sense but that too) in Western countries. If you dig a little bit, you can find hints of the same crap and far worse in other countries' histories, it's just not as well known.
@merlin5662
@merlin5662 10 ай бұрын
@@HolyMith I disagree, western nations appear to be more faithful but in reality we are better at keeping secrets then other non western countries (the u.s being the worse offender). We champion our democracy but in reality we often break such processes and people don't realise it (if I had a penny of the u.s interfering in other democratic counties processes I would have a dollar or morer). In reality we often record the wrong doing of other countries (in particular Russia and China) and how bad they were while omitting certain history that makes western countries bad, the middle east is probably the most well known example of this. When you record history remember "history is written by the victors"

We’re basically going through another sixties era of films we’re we just got out of a war and we’re starting to face the consequences and issues of the war and also general cultural issues of the United States. Normally when there is some sort of war or conflict Hollywood starts pumping out a ton of pro America or very heavy government/military drama or action films focused on the current conflict specifically. The 80s were mostly focused on the end of the Cold War and then the war on drugs with films like Red October being followed up by Clear and Present Danger. You can bet your ass that Hollywood would’ve started cooking up some sort of Ukrainian war film if the United States ever started sending troops.

I noticed years ago an interesting tactic by Hollywood. Conspiracies where the government would do something terrible, "off the books", and the brave hero would defeat them and save democracy and freedom. The trouble was the strategy was clearly attempting to pander to the left and right: validating "establishment" conspiracies of corrupt senators etc for the left and supporting libertarian views of the independent rogue outsider winning in the end. The end result I could see would be to validate conspiracies, and encourage distrust in elected representatives. The obvious conclusion was that Democracy was flawed. I realised that 20 years ago but didn't add 2 + 2 to see that it implied the solution would be a demagogue, the "hero" in charge. Hollywood fkd up America in search of profits.
