books, videos, and apprenticeship. or if you wanna get real serious there are collages for jewlery making that can be anything from becoming a precious metal smith, a jeweler, watch smith, and gemologists. look around online and locally for places to learn more. theres a guy that teaches classes at a art institute where i live and he shows you how to recover gold and silver metal from plated items then make it into jewelry (usually a small ring or a setting for a small stone cus its not much) or with just sterling silver.

Big ones like that? Tends to be a symbol of wealth / hard work in the hip-hop community ( legal or otherwise). It's also acts as a sort of silent threat / warning, in that, the person wearing an expensive chain like that openly ( especially in a bad neighborhood ) is very confident of their ability to maintain ownership of it because of their ability to exercise and use lethal force to do that. Very much within the same mentality of the Spartan moto "molon labe", or "Come take it from me".
