It was too costly to use a real Ferrari Daytona in Miami Vice so it's a replica built on a Corvette chassis. Ferrari did not like the use of the replica and requested that it not be used. The Testarossa was a replica too. The explosion was done with a replica body shell with no engine and other items mainly for safety reasons and a more dramatic effect. To back up my comment as fact, one of the two Daytona Corvette chasis replicas is on permanent display at the Volo Auto Museum.

If you ask someone who was alive in the 80s what they remember about Miami Vice, it’s the “In the Air Tonight” scene, and this one. Nothing else was ever on TV like that before (or since)! 😎 ps-maybe also the motorcycle race in the parking garage.

Yeah. The scene was actually shot on two different days and they couldn't get the same car for both days. The second car wasn't a 25th Anniversary model though, as this episode originally aired in 1985 and the 25th Anniversary Countach is a 1989. The two cars used are an LP500 and an LP5000S in European spec. There were a lot of differences even during year-to-year Countach production due to the realities of Lamborghini's low-volume production line in that era, and the tail light surrounds were a point of variation. The scene was originally shot with the LP500, then when director John Nicolella saw the first edit he wanted a reshoot because he wasn't happy with the scene. So the shoot was scheduled but the original car wasn't available. Back in 1985 hardly anybody noticed. The scene went by quickly and people were watching on small televisions with a fraction of the resolution of our computers, and the cars had less than a minute of screen time between them. Nobody involved with filming could ever have imagined that nearly forty years into the future people would have instant access to everything they did via a high-speed global information network, and be closely examining each scene on portable ultra-high-resolution computer screens looking for anachronisms. It was just unfathomable lol.

Most of the super cars back in the day were wide & heavy because of the bigger engines & the Ferrari’s he owned could keep up with them on Miami streets & they had better handling & were low to the ground that why he like them .

At the end of this episode, Gina blows the scumbag away, I love it! No TV crime show today would dare to put such a scene in for fear of being politically incorrect. In a post-episode extension, I suppose Gina would have been interviewed by internal affairs about this incident, and probably given alot of flak similar to what Trudy had to go thru in the episode "the Dutch Oven".

How is it that I don't remeber a single scene of Miami Vice except for this one and this is what You Tube recommended when I've never once search for Miami Vice episodes. I don't want to hear anyone making fun of the You Tube algorithm ever again.

I still remember this chase from my childhood, especially 1:55 when the road forked and split up in two lanes. By the way the actor who played this villain (Joaqim de Almeida) later appeared together with Harrison Ford in one of the Jack Ryan movies, "Clear and Present Danger" (1994). Very recognizable face.

Love this chase! Incredible for a TV show to have a car chase with a real Countach. This brought the Lamborghini into your house to view back at a time when it was very very rare to see one short of renting Canonball Run on VHS. Too bad they didn't later have a chase with the Testarossa and Countach. Yes I know they used 2 different Countaches and the Daytona was a fake :)

Due to my work schedule when this series first aired, I usually had my VCR set to record it. When I first saw this scene, something looked odd (aside from two different Countach's being used), so I rewound the scene, and watched it in slow motion: At 2.04 or so on this video, when the Countach swerves back in front of the Daytona, it nearly went head-on with an oncoming car - they were really driving fast in that scene, so fast that at normal speed you may not even notice the oncoming car!
