Thanks for the great information and education. I have been building mostly two-wheeled projects but am collecting parts for a crosskart build. I'd like to get my steering geometry right (or close to right) on my first try. This should help!!!

Antidive is for heavy breaking so you won't lose your caster angle causing ur wheels to toe out
@JonathanNichollsjono
@JonathanNichollsjono 3 жыл бұрын
Your kingpin inclination is fine as it is. You don't want camber change when suspension is compressed while the crosskart is traveling straight. You only want camber change when the front wheel suspension is compressed or extended in a turn. You do that by increasing caster angle. At the moment it's about 5 degrees (ok), 8 degrees to 10 degrees would be more ideal. However, check it yourself by turning your front wheels to see how much positive or negative camber it has in each direction. The wheel that you used in the video should have positive camber to the right (becomes inside wheel in a turn) and negative camber to the left (becomes outside wheel). Castor does mainly two things, it helps with stability so that your steering centres itself, and it introduces camber change in turns. Too much camber makes steering heavy.
@SikSwanger
@SikSwanger 3 жыл бұрын
I agree, all though you really won’t know the exact castor that car needs till you start text driving it. This is why I made my top a-arm adjustable to change my castor without pulling the top a-arm off the car. It might look all good when you turn it left to right and cycle the arms up and down when it’s sitting there, once you put the car through load that’s when you will really know where the castor should be at in my opinion. 👍
@JonathanNichollsjono
@JonathanNichollsjono 3 жыл бұрын
@@SikSwanger correct and I agree with you. I was just giving recommended castor angles for reference. Note: I looked at the thumbnail of the that turned wheel, in my personal opinion, I would increase castor slightly to give the inside and outside front tyre 'bite' in a turn when you are off road.

Thanks guys. its something im gonna have to play with. I read a full suspension write up from a reputable crosskart builder (from 12 yrs ago) and they were shooting for 0-4° caster. didnt understand why and it sounded crazy low. Eapecially when you look at the other crosskart companies at full lock and their wheel ia cambered in (what looks like) 8°! But like @sikswanger said, i wont know til i run it. I GREATLY appreciate your guys' feedback. it means a lot to me. keep it coming theough the build

@@jimkhana6881 it's push rod or rocker arm, not cantilever. Everyone who says that is wrong. A cantilever is a stationary support structure not a moving system. Ever heard a overhead valve pushrod engine refered to as a cantilever engine? No.

Hello , Great video , great car cant wait to see it finished . I would like to ask you a question I ve heard you said that the maximum kingpin inclination shouldnt be more that 12.5 degrees , what if it will be ? what problems should that have , I am designing a leaning tricycle than in order to have zero scrub radius has to have 22.7 degrees kingpin inclination , I havent finalized yet the design and i might finally make less inclined or maybe not inclined at all , but I dont know things get way too complicated with leaning , whats your opinion ?
@jimkhana6881
@jimkhana6881 3 жыл бұрын
I think you want some scrub to keep the bike tracking straight. The trike is totally different. I'm strictly talking about a crosskart with this ride height and geometry
@antoniskaloterakis7996
@antoniskaloterakis7996 3 жыл бұрын
@@jimkhana6881 i dont know what you mean by bike traking but ok , I know its diferrent but the bump steer is the closest thing to lean steer , if the tie rods wont be put in the correct position the wheels will steer as they lean . In the current 22.7 kp setup i have now i see that the point that attaches to the rod end changes height for example 40 mm when steering right and 20 when steering left so i think that would effect ackerman making it more complicated
