CUCV M1028 Project Part 2 - Bringing Back The Dead

In this episode we dig deep into this completely dead M1028 CUCV. It doesn't start. It has no lights. The wiring is completely hacked and fried. There was a wiring fire, etc. Problems we will tackle are:
1.) No start/ slow crank
2.) No lights, horn, wipers, etc.
3.) Replacing the CUCV starter relay
4.) Installing a Push-button glow plug switch
5.) Instrument cluster remove, rebuild and reinstall
6.) Glow plug relay issues

You know your stuff, I'm going to post a short video of my cucv project- it runs but huffs out of the breather bad. I believe its either a broke piston/ring or hoping its a stuck exhaust valve. Could you offer your opinion on the video- thanks

These trucks ARE easy, but only once you know them. There are plenty of mechanics out there that get stumped by these things. To answer your question... Yes, I do sell parts. @rocknus this is an awesome video brother. I have a question, I tested my relay switch. There’s no power from the bottom stud when the key is turned On. What the heck could that mean? New relay, new glow plug card, etc.? Thank you for any help. Keep the videos coming, you’re killing it man!!

Key on should produce 12v power at the pink wire on the glow plug relay. You are not getting power to the pink wire with key on?

@@RocknusUrbanCamouflage Hello there! Thanks for reaching out. When the key is in the On position (while the Wait light is On) the very Top Stud gets power, however the bottom stud does Not. The Top Stud has a Blue Wire and the bottom Stud has Orange Wires. Thanks for any help man.

@RocknusUrbanCamouflage Hey Johnny, I have a quick question. Is it safe/ok to use Ring Lugs on the battery cable ends for both batteries for negative and positive posts? I’m thinking of just putting those type of battery cable connections so it will be faster to disconnect my batteries and also not wear out my current lugs.

Apologies for the delay in replying. Been away from the KZbin for a bit focusing on the brick & mortar. I suppose as long as the ring connectors and wires are correct gauge and designed to handle 24v and appx 900 CCA, it should be fine and dandy. Thanks for the watch and comment, John.

I'm installing new glow plugs but the 2nd one from the alternator on the passenger side, just not going all the way in, what could be the cause?

Could be anything from cross-threaded to something stuck inside.

What guage is the wire with the blue fusible link you changed out?

Also the guage of the other fusible link beside the blue one, I see 12 on the black tube thing so I assume the guage for the blue fusible is 12, if so the red wire to the blue fusible link would be 8 guage. I need to know as I want to rebuild the pair.

When you say the blue wire go to ground, what exactly do you mean

I mean you can literally take a wire, attach it to the grounded body or motor of your vehicle and touch the other end to the nut with the blue wire on it and if the ignition is on and the relay is good, it will trigger the relay.

The glow plug solenoid is rated at how many amps?

These 12v relay units usually rate from 85-100 amps depending on model. I believe mine is 100 amp. The AC Delco 60G plugs I used draw 6-10 amps each (from what I understand) so on initial startup you'll probably pull between 48-80 amps. If you average it out you're at about 64 amps draw through that relay.

I saw two cards like the glow plug card under the dash, what are they for? One has about five resistors.

I'd need to see a picture. There's the GP controller card under there and then there are some relays for things like your horn, etc. Would need more detail on what you are looking at.

@@RocknusUrbanCamouflage ok, I'm not near the truck now but I saw those two additional cards whilst taking out the heater core compartment to clean it. One is identical to the glow plug card and the other has about 5 sets of resistors. What does the GP controller does?

The m1008, which transfer case it has in np 205 or 208?

M1008's usually came with the 208.
