Numbers 2 & 4 were upsetting, mainly number 4. I and probably many others were led to believe that Asuka would square off against Alexa Bliss at Wrestlemania 34. Everything seemed to go in that direction with her facing Mickie James, then gaining a victory over Nia Jax at Elimination Chamber. The wheels were set in motion until WWE decided to shift gears and go with Alexa vs Nia for the RAW Women's title. Once that happened, I knew the streak would end once she and Charlotte were matched up.

Goldberg's streak wasn't as overinflated as you think. As of August 1998 on Wrestling Bio's Reliving the War series the actual count is 130 while the one WCW has is 134. He counts house shows and B shows on there too so that's how it's been so close.

It wasn't ending Goldberg's streak that was the problem. He went down in a good manner. The problem was the Finger Poke of Doom a week later that made everything completely meaningless. If Kevin Nash had a long title run while kayfabe ducking Goldberg, it would probably be remembered rather well.

Yeah. It's easy to forget how incredibly popular the Wolfpack were in 1998, because the reunited NWO were such a shitshow in 1999. And Goldberg was an extremely polarizing figure in 1998. A lot of people thought his one-note win streak was sucking all the life out of the WCW world title. On the forums I frequented at the time, there was broad support for Kevin Nash to be the one to end Goldberg's winning streak.

@@daviddalrymple2284 Exactly. the Wolfpack was just as over in WCW as DX 2.0 (The most over version of DX before the nostalgia acts) was in WWF at the time. Nash while not as over as Austin was more over than anyone in WCW. WCW fans were also pretty much tired of Goldberg at the time, to the point when Nash won the crowd went nuts throw how happy they actually were. Then Hogan had to do his power play with the Fingerpoke and Nash complied because it became clear it was that or basically not be allowed on TV anymore since Bischoff wasn't going to let him and Hall back to WWF.

Tatanka was my favorite as a kid, and I was beyond upset when Ludvig Borga squashed him. Then he was scheduled to get a rematch at Royal Rumble 94… so I convinced my mom to buy me a PPV for the first time ever so I could see my hero get some revenge. Then Borga left the company before the match and was replaced by Bam Bam Bigelow. Tatanka never got revenge, and I’m still upset about it. 😂

Well, if it's any consolation? "The Viking" Ludvig Borga, or as we here in Finland know him better as, Tony Halme, ended up largely despised even by his own people. My personal theory is that just 10 years after that match with Tatanka, he was already at the brink of suicide during his relatively fresh political career. And he continued to be so until he actually managed to shoot himself in 2010, at 47 years of age. For much of his later life, he was just a miserable, drug-addled wretch of a human being. I'm sorry that your personal hero lost to him, and his ultimately stupid fucking gimmick of Finnish anti-industrialism, but his record of victories is also not really even worth any remembrance at this point. So all we can really do is laugh together at how pathetic this man actually ended up being.

Scorpio Sky winning the tag titles always felt to me like AEW being really desperate to have a black guy hold one of their inaugural championships. the worst of the worst is the ending of the streak (in the sense that he did not suffer a defeat CLEAN) is Brock Lesnar since Wrestlemania 30. Lesnar was the most dominated of WWE, and his first defeat clean since WM 30, it's against a old part timer in a terrible match à SS 2016
@ShadicRothZz1998
@ShadicRothZz1998 Жыл бұрын
This is some revisionist history here. Their match at survivor series was not terrible, it was exactly what it should have been and was an amazing subversion of expectations that left everyone in awe. You could argue Brock could have been used for an up and comer, yes, and you'd be right. But that didn't make the loss or the match bad. The royal rumble had so much hype in 2017 because people wanted to see Lesnar and Goldberg again. They wanted it so much that they stuck the belt on Goldberg and let him and Lesnar have their best match together at Mania. We could have gotten better yes, but that didn't make what we got terrible.

@@ShadicRothZz1998 The match of WM20, even if it's not terrible, had a better in-ring than the match of 33 who there is only finisher (worst than WM 34 main event, and this was the one of the worst match of WM33 witch CenaBella/MizMaryse). And the survivor series match is horrible, both the fact of making a squash in the main event and the result. This feud is shit like the run of goldberg after, and the SS match is in the same level than the Goldberg/Fiend. this is how i would have booked this feud : Goldberg make his return at the rumble, have a brawl witch lesnar, and lesnar finds himself weakened and be eliminated by many wrestler like in 2016 when he was eliminated by the Wyatt Family. Like this, Goldberg has a pop and his revenge, and Lesnar stay protected. There is the feud à WM 33 whithout the Universal title, and lesnar wins the match like that an everywhere ball in the center (make more sense than the reality because Oldberg led 2-1). Lesnar become universal champion later during the year, and he got his first defeat clean since WM30 at WM34 by Roman Reigns, and Reigns turn heel and become the tribal chief after WM34

I thought Asuka's trip to WrestleMania after winning the first women's Royal Rumble was doomed by Ronda showing up at the end. We knew she was going to show up at the event, but by putting it at the end and having her do the "I'm going to WrestleMania" pointing to the sign move, she upstaged Asuka on an historic night. Sure, Ronda was going to Mania, but that moment should have been Asuka's and there was NO reason for her to be there at that time, since she wasn't going to be in the ring with Asuka, Alexa, or Charlotte. Asuka's had a few decent reigns - and was also screwed over to make Becky Two Belts via Charlotte's involvement, but never got the Mania moment she deserves. Maybe next time, finally?

They REALLY leaned into the undefeated streak for Asuka and booked themselves into a corner for the Mixed Match Challenge. Since she was undefeated, she and Miz had to win, even though Braun and Bliss or Roode and Charlotte/Becky (Becky for 1 match) would have been just fine. Second, if you review the mythology of the Fiend, Goldberg beating him actually fits within the mythos. Fiend "beat" Cena in that weird match because of all the changes Cena went through over the years. The Fiend taunted Braun with how Braun used to be and won in the swamp. Both Bryan, Orton and Rollins have had different characters over the years. But, Goldberg has always been Goldberg. The Fiend's usual mind games couldn't work and Goldberg wins. Of course, none of that was ever mentioned or alluded to, but it still fits.

I still think Goldberg should've lost it two months earlier at Halloween Havoc to a red hot DDP. The Diamond Cutter was a move that was a credible finisher and DDP could hit it out of nowhere on anyone. Goldberg hits the Spear, goes for the jackhammer, DDP slides out of jackhammer, his the DC for a 2.9, a little back and forth, Goldberg goes for a Spear, DDP counters into a diamond cutter for the 1, 2, 3.

The Goldberg style undefeated streak is alive and well in AEW. In the woman's division they have Jade and in the men's they have Hook. IMO a loss will not damage Jade at all. Hook on the other hand is nothing without winning. Just a skinny Goldberg with Dragonball hair.

Ryback shouldn't have been in a title match so soon. He was still getting momentum, and I was actually starting to get behind him. But we all knew Punk wasn't losing. He couldn't lose, he was on absolute fire. Ryback could a been a huge star, but they totally killed his momentum with that match.

WWE panicked. Punk was feuding with Cena at the time and Cena suffered a minor injury (I stress minor because he was good to compete at Survivor Series onward that year) but that meant Punk had no PPV opponent for Hell in a Cell since WWE didn't really build any credible faces to book against Punk besides Cena. WWE felt they needed *somebody* so they looked to Ryback and his kayfabe streak and decided he was the best option. Which is never good since it put Ryback into a spot he was too soon for and thus his streak and initial momentum went down the drain.

I wouldn't consider losing a tag match to be breaking a singles winning streak for Jericho. The wrestlers' win/loss 'records' that AEW quotes are different for singles and tag, so why would it count for this list? Particularly when Charlotte Flair's streak didn't count a tag loss...

Jesus, such a Big Show bias on this channel. That decision for him to best Brock was absolutely brilliant, Show had been meandering along for some time until he randomly joined sd and became Lesnar's challenger, it turned out to be an amazing build up that already pretty much rehabbed Show as a threat, and it was nice to see them do something with it. Not big on second chances around here huh? Show went on to have an absolutely brilliant 2003 after, was one of the big rivals of Lesnar's first run too. That program made Show legit.

They should have given Asuka’s streak to someone who could have actually used it. Having Charlotte be the first one to beat her (and HOW Asuka lost was lame as well) was just pointless. It was WWE cramming Charlotte down fan’s throats yet again. Then Charlotte lost clean to Carmella a month later, which made it even more stupid. What gets me about Goldberg’s streak ending was that not only was the finish lame. But it helped NO ONE in the end. Kevin Nash just laid down for Hogan two weeks later and became Hogan’s Lackey again. Goldberg looked like a fool and he never held the WCW World Title again either. And Hogan just looked like an egomaniac once again.
