It would be wise of you all to say no next time. Because it's coming it's right around the corner. If you haven't seen China taking its positions pay attention. While everyone is paying attention to Amber Heard and Johnny Depp's trial, our processing plants are blowing up. We don't make the steel to fix them. They've taken away our ability to produce energy. As someone from Michigan we are very low income population, many do not regularly see a pcp until they are bad off, shitty hospitals that downsized over the years, we have huge many intergenerational households. Heavily obese and lack of primary care. Where our hospitals are located is problematic in relation to access to many. Then we have a very rural area in care zone desserts. We have areas were there should be superfund sites on the Eastside and central Michigan from past industries. Then you hold up Flint Michigan as an example of the shittiness of what our state has done over the decades. I am not sure but our parks were open. We could go to the beaches and only a portion of our play equipment was shut down. But I had my son’s birthday party at the park behind the city central government. We attended two birthday parties at the beaches for my son’s little friends. The count and state parks were free admissions without the pass or paying. So using a country that has great healthcare, and mainly single households with a very high standard of living. With a high public welfare system and public health system and per capita they are more educated.

Really enjoy Marty and this discussion. I have to say that employer coverage is just a bad model though-it interrupts our access to physicians between jobs and makes us insecure while also stifling business and innovation. I do think some sort of single payer system with an HMO model and some sort of capitation payment structure would be the most rational, structured care while reducing admin bloat and unnecessary services. Doesn’t mean we need to go full NHS and socialize all hospitals though-I think there should be more medical cooperatives where physicians and providers can own their practices. Reducing pharma costs by collective bargaining is another huge piece to actually control costs and not just transfer middle class wealth to medical industry CEOs. I think we do need a transitional Medicare for all option though, so the program has to prove it can compete against the private market. I feel the situation overall in Europe is preferable to the feeling living on a knifes edge and being extorted for my asthma inhalers here. I was even a Bernie Sanders delegate before the whole COVID fiasco distanced me from the rest of the left (esp on mandates), so I’ve been thinking a lot lately about what practical, meaningful but EFFECTIVE healthcare reform would realistically look like. Sadly I do not think either party is at all interested in achieving this since they are funded by big pharma

I have asked this question of a few practitioners. If we notice all of these politicized issues and unnecessary mandates in public policies/private policies, what do we do about it? When a museum doesn’t let young adults in who don’t have a third dose of an vaccine when there is no supporting data to support it. Where kids are prevented education unless they are vaccinated again without supporting evidence, what can we DO about this? There are still restrictions for unvaccinated people even if they have had Covid. So they have natural immunity but this is not respected. For those of us who “see “ this and also know the science, what can we do?

What you REALLY need is direct care, you just pay a monthly premium to a network of hospitals, like a health club membership. If you need any services, they are covered. That would cut out the for profit middle man. Make health care cheaper for everyone,,, and require that all hospitals be non profit (60 percent already are) Doctors aren't as big of a deal. Lots of people can swing a doctor bill, let's face it, you'll never get a bill from a doctor's office for a quarter million dollars.

Fascinating conversation as always. The comparison between Sweden and Michigan was especially interesting. One thing I'll put out there regarding Michigan is that they haven't had any statewide mandates since June of '21. People seem to assume that because it's a Democratic state that they still have the strict rules, but to their credit they decided that mandates really weren't necessary after vaccines became widely available. (And, omicron or no, I was absolutely delighted to spend a mask-free week in Detroit over the Xmas holidays.)

@@SasukeUchiha-zu6dw Yes indeed, it got very ugly, and I'm pretty sure that figured into the decision to abandon mandates. It maybe illustrates yet another similarity between Sweden and Michigan. Interesting the first 10 minutes focuses on wine - yet without nuance of which wines are healthier (ie less bad) than others. One thing I learned years ago was, beyond simply the alcohol content, there are various other factors that make some wines worse (and less bad) than others. More specific, most wines contain high levels of sugar, alcohol, and FDA-approved additives (76 of them!). In my world, a true wine connoisseur would know these things - rather than going by the taste (and more often the price, marketing / branding).

The main problem with the 1976 'Judgement of Paris' that nobody ever tells you is that 90% of the French Judges in that tasting had never tasted a California wine before. So it's a little like any blind tasting where the sweeter/fruiter/rich product tends to win. Not taking anything from Napa Valley wines...the nice thing about the Judgement of Paris is that everybody ended up winning in the end (e.g. winemakers and consumers everywhere benefitted)

What bullshit. They did it again 10 years later. Same result. And again 30 years later, with the American wines drubbing the French.

@@chrissargent3136 Chief, no need to be so angry. This isn't about who made the best wine. BUT it's an undenyable fact that 90% of the French judges never tasted a California wine before. It'd be like a gymnastics judge in the Olympics deciding the Gold Medal without ever having judged the particular discipline. Obviously it maks a difference. And the fact that Stag's Leap won by such a small margin obviously makes you wonder if the judges lack of experience with California wines played a role. What you should REALLY tell evrybody though, is that every time the Judgement of Paris has been recreated over the years, different wines have won (e.g. Stag's Leap never 'repeated')...indicating that blind tasting of wine is what is truly BS in this whole discussion.
