What do you mean? You walk out and that's that. Before, they might call you back with a lower price that's still not where you want to be, and you say "no thanks." You're going to get 2-5 emails about the car, or until it sells. Price may or may not change. Last few months, more than 1 dealer INCREASED the price the longer it went unsold. But now, they'll just wait for the next idiot. Unfortunately, there's usually a next idiot and they'll get bent over for more.

I live in Upstate NY and dealers are not negotiating yet. They are saying they have bought the inventory at what the market has been paying and are only making a fair margin, not taking excessive mark-ups. I told one their prices are $5,600K higher than KBB; and they said that KBB does not buy and sell cars and are not reflecting current market. I responded that cars are depreciating assets, and that while they might not think they are taking advantage of market situation, it's not true. They are purchasing vehicles above what they are worth; and then passing on that bad deal on to the customer who will then be upside down in their car loan owing more than what it is worth. They were still not willing to negotiate. It will come back to bite because cars are depreciating, not appreciating assets. And I will have to wait it out more.

Once, I went to see a 2014 GMC Acadia SLT-2 4wd (used 50k miles), trade in value was $18k; drove test it, salesperson freaked out when I pulled my scanner to search for hidden issues/codes, after engine was hot, got under with a paper towel, engine was leaking oil, offered $18k, big wolf (manager) wanted $25k; lowered to $24,700; He wouldn't play ball; I told them no way. Purchased it from private party for $16k cash. Feb 2023 and I still have that car. Car buying from dealership is just a ripoff.

The key is don’t buy it. It’s called leverage. You have no leverage so exit the scenario. Continue to drive what you have now until the market drops or supply increases. Consider used or another model. Best to just not buy anything now.

I will say this since I've purchased a car now. It's is pretty simple when it's the right dealer at the right time. The end of the month did prove to be the best time to me. I bought a car that had only been on the lot for maybe a week. Still got 4k off. That was on my second visit tho, first time the wouldn't budge. What I'd say now is practice with cars u don't really won't. Get used to not bugging and be willing to walk fast. The things yaa teaches really works and I got a great deal.

Question for you Ray... When a salesman or a closer asks a customer to sign or initial on a blank sheet of paper that they'll take the car today for $XX,XXX, do any states consider that a binding contract? Can a dealership say, "well you signed here that if we could get the price to $XX,XXX, you'd buy the car today" and force you to then sign an actual sales contract? I ask because I had that happen to me in the past and I walked out anyways. The closer told me they'd sue to enforce the "contract" I signed if I didn't sign the actual sales contract. I never heard from them or their lawyer, so I'm guessing this was just a slimy tactic. This happened to me back in the 90's and I've since been involved in the business as a dealer tech (I befriended a few sales guys and they taught me many things).
@CarEdge
@CarEdge 2 жыл бұрын
Aaron, signing or initialing a price that you would buy it for is not binding. The reason dealers do it is to shame you into buying if they get to your number and you refuse to complete the transaction. You might hear things like, aren't you a man of your word? Does your signature mean nothing to you? How would you feel if I agreed to your number and then raised the price after we agreed? It is all just a psychological ploy. All the best, Ray

Ray you really helped me with my car buying experience. I bought my first car ever. It is a 2019 GMC Sierra with 50k miles on it. They had it at 41 out the door and they had this BS eco fee. I asked what was in it. They said Mats, tint, pin strip etc. I was like I didn’t ask for that I don’t want that. And they first said no the. Half way and then completely gone to 385. I then negotiated my car to 3500 and then it went to 35 out the door. I would’ve been paying the same for a brand new Tacoma. The only thing I payed for was sales tax license fee. So it was a good couple thousand dollars I took off.

How do you find out how long a car has been sitting on the lot??
@briansegall1084
@briansegall1084 2 жыл бұрын
A couple ways: 1. The online listing might show the history of price reductions, although maybe not exact dates. 2. If the online listing includes a Carfax report, it will have a date for when the report was ordered by the dealer as part of prepping the car for sale. They probably put it up for sale a few days or a week later. 3. Before the test drive, note the mileage from the ad. During the test drive, check the actual odometer. The difference is how much mileage was put on the car since the dealer first acquired it. That gives you a good idea how many test drives the car has been on - divide the additional mileage by how long a typical test drive is. In one case, I figured there had been over 100 test drives over 3 months. 4. Ask to see the service records showing what inspections or repairs the dealer did when prepping the car. Look for dates on the invoices, and that will tell you just about when they first put the car up for sale. When it comes to stale listings, be sure to remind the salesman as often as possible that the car has been sitting on the lot much longer than it should, that it's depreciating every single day that it goes unsold, and that your offer is likely to be the best he ever gets.

Everyone is "of import". Don't buy a new car. No matter when you do, it's long term value (IRS depreciated business asset value) drops immediately and rapidly. Buy a used recent model privately where you can have it checked by a trusted mechanic and can drive away with the title in hand.

I have been shopping for mid-2000s Buicks and these are held at non-branded dealerships, naturally. No matter the asking price of the car, from5K-10K, I've been told I must put down 30% - regardless of credit. When I pressed one owner/Mgr to the wall, he admitted that 70% of asking price is all the bank will lend. I responded, "So what you're telling me is that the car is 30% overpriced?" His response: "Yes. The buyer has to eat the 30%." Talk about galling, but at least I got a free education on why it is so hard to buy these vehicles! When I pointed out that Days in Market were steadily increasing (in some cases to 180 days!) thus it would behoove them to lower prices and move some vehicles, he mumbled something about "somebody will pay it." I schooled him on the inverse relationship between rising interest rates and the resulting lowered prices on purchasing hard assets to warm him up for my next contact (the car is still on their lot at 153 DOM!) he either did not comprehend or did not wish to pursue that line of thought. I'm thinking of approaching them again at months' end. Any thoughts/comments/advice? I am having the same issue with the Oldsmobiles from the 1990s!

Yeah as a dealer this wouldn’t work lol most stores are in the market of making money for this to happen you’d need a manager that is desperate. It would depend on the store and how they are doing that month for this to work

It's funny, I went to a dealership about a month ago that had a 2017 4Runner with super low miles that I was interested in. They had been posting it since NOVEMBER of 2021 and had it at 40K. I figured since they'd had it for so long they'd be willing to go lower on the price.... lol boy was I wrong. Dealer told me they could easily go sell it at auction and make more than what he had it listed at. Told him good luck. They're still posting about it lol.

Hey Zach. Can you please do a video on the dealer satisfaction survey that the dealership pushes? They make it sound like anything but a 5star rating is a fail. Why?
@cousinjohncarstuff4568
@cousinjohncarstuff4568 2 жыл бұрын
I am not Zach, less than 5 stars means you were not satisfied with the transaction as a whole. In fact, here is a brainstorm! In Finance, tell the person you have 15 min to do all paperwork, more than 15 min "No 5 star rating for you!"

Because in the eyes of the manufacturer, anything less than a 10/10 score IS a fail. It actively hurts your salesperson and the dealership financially. It's an unfortunate situation and system because oftentimes, customers actively hurt their sales representative for things outside of their control. For example, I've seen surveys come back at a 7/10 with comments like "XYZ was fantastic to work with but I had to wait 20 minutes to get into finance, and the finance guy was pushy"... The manufacturer won't even read the comments. They see the 7/10 and suddenly your salesperson is out of their annual or monthly bonus.

@@crizvee7247 Do a cost comparison between the two. I drive 120 miles round trip for my regular job, then about 200-300 miles for my part time delivery driver job. I paid 13k for my car, which msrp on it was 15-17k. I get 40mpg on a bad tank. Unusually get 46-49 mpg during the warmer months and 40-42 mpg in colder months. My TCO will be far cheaper than the cheapest Tesla (which is 30-35k). It really sounds like you want to justify the cost of buying an EV.

I remember once I drove to a dealership and after I got screaming at the corrupt sales guy, he hid in a back room. the song and dance can be ended quickly .. "how much is the car Ray"? "oh, sounds good. I will allow $75 for fees. have it ready in the morning, " .. if the sales guy comes back with anyhing other than "ok", I walk.

After careful evaluation this young lady took advantage of a hard working senior citizen trying to remain productive in society. When Ray's sales manager (some guy named Zack) reviews the paper work and notices the fabric protector and paint sealer removed and the final number changed from a 9 to a 6 and no service contract, Ray will be out on the street and looking for a desk at Nissan with a Sentra demo. Ray should not have been overcome by Laura's stunning beauty and the hotness of her strong woman battling for success when purchasing an automobile.
