There's been no migrants all year. Your first migrant wave was your last, and its been over a year since then. There is much work to do, and not enough hands to do them. Perhaps foolishly, you began large projects with the expectations of future migrants. Now the large halls of your fortress only echo with the footsteps of your expedition leader, as he silently makes his way to his office to speak with the mountainhome liaison. You learn your civilization is at war and losing, losing so badly there are no refugees to migrate. The broker sells everything he can, anything to make our humble hole shine as a beacon for any surviving dwarf. You sign a trade agreement for weapons and shields. After the traders leave you wonder if those are the last dwarves you'll ever see. The air cools as if in response, seeking to snuff out all life or hope. The swamps become devoid of life, the river freezes solid, the caverns below lack any water. No one goes outside anymore, and you close the drawbridge to keep the wolves and werebeasts out. Some damn fool has been making meals out of your seeds. So now although you have food for the winter, you lack the drinks to survive it. As the snow covers the hill above your home, you look for a way to quench your thirst. Milking horses might have bought you time. Time enough to think of a solution. Time enough to dig for another cavern, that'll hopefully share some water to keep you through the cold. Time enough, it seems, to strike the earth.

Always dig until the cavern, then wall it off so you don't get invaded. There you can build your home, at safe, from the cold and invaders.

The real beauty of these songs is that they're all played on instruments that can have analogues in the game. I can see most of this song played on instruments I've built in my fort.

I caught a serpent man. He was dropped into a fight pit some years later, he was tired of being alone. It was a routine mass pitting, he landed next to a goblin thief and two friendly serpent tribe members. He clobbered the goblin to death with his blowpipe, his friends also did some in. But then the dwarves came. He had only just accepted seeing death, and felt nothing seeing his two friends die. He had learned whilst dying of bleeding to appreciate tranquility.

Not an expert myself but ive heard that winter isn't really THAT bad...can still farm and whatnot and youre not really "entombed"...per them
@justinmcgough39582 жыл бұрын
yeah, winter isn't honestly that bad. If you just do underground farming you'll be fine. They can pretty much survive on shroom wine so even water isn't much of an issue either with underground farming.
@jpaqon2 жыл бұрын
@@justinmcgough3958 Farming in shallow soil is apparently going to become much less efficient in the steam version, leading players to rely on cavern farming/trade for food.

Winter USED to be that bad, in the old 2D version way back when. The game simulates a lot more these days, but the challenge has gone down a bit since then.

It depends on where you embark and what you intend to do. Scorching - Warm climates won't go below, or even near freezing during the winter months. Temperate climates may be snow-less, or may have a lot of snow depending on how close to a "cold" or "warm" biome you are. Cold climates will usually have snow near-year round except maybe during peak summer. If it's cold enough for snow, it's usually cold enough to freeze water. If you have anything that depends on that water (ie; no underground source, no cistern, or you're using water wheels) this could be a huge issue. You need water for hospitals and healing, which is the biggest concern here. Likewise, water freezing instantly kills any animals in the water, so if your dwarves fall in when it freezes they're gone. This is especially dangerous at the beginning and end of winter, because the water might freeze-melt-freeze a few times before settling on being frozen...and dwarves love to walk on the ice for whatever reason. There's also farming; if you are relying on non-plump helmet/dimple cup crops for anything, you're out of luck. Especially if it's surface crops, such as with a surface-fort. Freezing is where the real danger is, because freezing can go below 9964 degrees urist (which is roughly -20C), and at that level of cold is when you see frostbite and item degradation. You might also see it in Cold and, rarely, Temperate, but you will certainly see it in Freezing.

My very first fort back ages ago ended on the very first winter because I had messed up my farming and had nowhere near enough alcohol. The river froze and the entire forest died of thirst in what felt like moments. FUN was had. Reclaimed the fort, dealt with the ghosts, and started working on a cistern and other water related projects, but never got too far. Pretty excited to play the steam version and have FUN again.
