OP's dad is a greedy SOB and was probably telling Julia about all he was going to inherit. That's why she married him. Grandma raised OP's dad and she knew how rotten he was. I'm glad Layla and Mia became a part of OP's life. They truly saved OP from what his dad had planned for him. Although I do find it odd that the attorney didn't contact OP about the Grandmother's will and how the dad got his hands on it...

Nope That depends on the country In some countries you can fill out a will online and sign it ..ofc you risk that someone destroys it and they teh proof is gone but it IS possible No lawyers are involved

My experience does not involve money, but how someone threw away a 20+ year marriage away because my now exhusband no longer wished to deal with my battle with Bipolar Disorder with suicidal behavior. He just threw me out of the house after I came home from the hospital from an episode due to my health issue. I found out later he moved in his new bed buddy just days after I was kicked out. He sued for divorce and won all property and assets because I was out of state and was unable to attend the hearing due to the fact I could not afford an attorney and the plane ticket to get there. That was 10 years ago. Today I'm off all meds and living a very happy life.

How many years of that 20 did he feel trapped due to your mental illness? As much as it sucks, it can be extremely difficult also to be the partners of even mildly mentally ill people (I am one and am married to one so no judgement) but I'm sure the choice wasn't easy for him and was born of frustration and struggle as well. Always two sides to the story.

No amount of feeling frustrated or trapped should justify doing something so callous. If people can't deal with an ill partner that's one thing, but leaving them with basically little to no means to recover on their own is another blatantly sh!tty thing altogether

Because there's no helping people who don't want to be helped. I wouldn't sue, because im not American and that's not a big thing else where. You might think it's shitty, but being with a shitty partner makes you lose empathy after years of being worn down. Sometimes you have to make the decision to put your own mental well being ahead of someone else's. And that will make you the bad guy in their eyes and you just accept that. Because if people cant admit to their own shortcomings as a partner, they'll always make themselves the victim instead of accepting they both could have done things differently and that things just didn't work out.
