Leto turned a hard stare at Kynes. This Duke was concerned more over the men than he was over the spice. He risked his own life and that of his son to save the men. He passed of the loss of a spice crawler with a gesture. The threat to men’s lives had him in a rage. A leader such as that would command fanatic loyalty. He would be difficult to defeat. Against his own will and all previous judgments, Kynes admitted to himself: "I like this Duke."

No wonder the emperor wanted the Atreides to die. The Duke was a good leader.

This moment probably saved his son and wife. I have not read the book but this was the point in my head the loyalty shifted for the Doctor.

Yup something like that :) The book makes a point of the doctor thinking how much he cares for the workers rather than the spice

And there you have the Atreides in a nutshell, and why even the Emperor feared them and set the trap for them. Even his own employee shifts her loyalty to them. SPOILERS FOR SECOND MOVIE/BOOK: . . . . . . . . . . . . . and turns out the Emperor was more right to fear the Atreides than he thought.

In the 1984 version, Kynes literally narrates, "this Duke cares more about his men than his spice. I like this Duke." It's almost insulting to the audience. Villeneuve clearly had more faith in us to understand the nuances of this moment.

@@user-uo8mx3cv5k I'm not sure where exactly you can find it, but I remember it being recorded at a panel at some convention where David Lynch states he never makes a mistake when making something. It is a pretty known quote of his, despite me not remembering when and where it was recorded.

Even from a business perspective, this makes sense. What is more difficult to replace; years of training all twenty-one men and women on that crawler or a single piece of equipment that is mass-produced. Especially since, as far as I know, spice is a naturally occurring substance thanks to the sandworms.

The Duke wanted to show - by example - that there was a _big_ change in management on Arrakis. Albeit a short-lived one.

It will be a long-lived one, mind you.

Remember: while the story praises Leto for being a great man, it also critiques him because that alone is not enough to be a great leader- as he ultimately failed and his subjects suffered for it. Not entirely un-similar to Ned Stark from Game of Thrones.
