Aside from crying from laughing at how tragic it is while Zefrank's soothing voice narrates us through loss and stifled dreams, the very ending made me feel sorry for the actual bug. Damselfly crawls back into the muck. She just had her wings chewed off, and after wandering around the chestnut until she realizes she won't be able to fly, she returns to the only home she's known to try to survive, where she presumably drowns since puberty just kicked her out of that habitat. I was not expecting this level of emotion while I waited for my shower to heat up.

I hadn't thought about it that way at first, but you're right. Adult damselflies no longer have the gills they had as nymphs and would promptly drown if they tried to return underwater. Damselfly's big dreams about soaring away and becoming a star ended when the dragonfly who she thought would be her agent used her and then dumped her when he was no longer interested, leaving her to die in the swamp she'd tried to fly away from. Truly, a tragedy for the ages. :(

Beetle never mentioned his first love. That was until months later as he got ready for his final molt. I've loved before, he said. Millipede held him closer. She was my Damselfly. Millipede stared into his eyes, would you like to visit her, Beetle? One last time, before you go? Beetle couldn't imagine how Millipede would take him to the sky, but he agreed. ... Beetle stood, his head low, and his legs shaking. "Before I would depart, I belonged in the sky, but the muck had my heart." His eyes followed the words engraved in stone. She never flew, Beetle whispered. Millipede took his hand, you don't have to fly to live.

"How beautiful things must be from the sky, he thought. Everything looks better small and far away," just DESTROYS me. How Damselfly's rejection must have stung Beetle. How he loved Damselfly enough to still think her, to look up at the sky or at his phone, aching but nevertheless happy knowing that she is someplace where she can see beautiful things and be the best version of herself she can be and finding some semblance of warmth from that. And then that small moment of love (because what is grief but love enduring), juxtaposed against the harsh reality of Damselfly's wings (the thing she left Beetle for, the thing that was going to finally make her whole) being eaten and brutalized, and Damselfly dying? Returning to the muck, alone, without even Beetle there to welcome her back? Fucking brutal, man. Scientific Explanation: Beetle simply wanted air, Damselfly grew wings, ANOTHER Damselfly came and ate them due to cannibalism and competition (apparently confirmed in the comments) then it went into the water to die. Emotional Explanation: Damselfly grew her wings, moving away from the beetle now with her opportunities growing. Beetle settled down, got into a loveless marriage and dreamt of Damselfly. Meanwhile Damselfly got into an abusive relationship, got severely injured to the point of being disabled, and ended her once happy, now miserable life.

Yes, I believe it was a competitive move, as opposed to a meal. They were both females. If she was attacked for food, the damsel would have eaten most of the other damsel, not just damage the wings. I love your videos, but that might be my favorite. I can't stop thinking about it, I can't stop watching it and getting sad about it. I left an opportunity to be with love of my life to go and study a masters degree abroad. On the final day she asked me to stay and start a life with her. But everything was so in motion that I didn't do it, I thought we could wait until I came back. But that didn't happen... Now I lost her and I feel unfulfilled in love and in my career. I feel so bad for both beetle and damselfly.

Consider yourself lucky! No one who cares for you would NEVER ask you to STOP AND CHANGE DIRECTIONS after you put all your hard work and effort just to have that opportunity, love is NOT selfish, plus love could have been letters, visits, calls and texts until you completed your studies abroad! Who ever "she" is, I would say she's the one who was trying to EAT YOUR WINGS! And keep you in the sluge! Unlike this story, YOU have a better ending...wings still attatched!!! 🦅
