With FFX just now on Switch, there will be an influx of new people playing. It was my first video game beyond, like, StarFox64. 😅 My awesome brother got it for me for my birthday, and a switch to play it on. I’ve got a lot of great memories of playing with him. I became chronically ill at 11 and sometimes couldn’t sleep because of the pain. We’d play. It was great distraction, and we bonded a lot in a common goal. People who are deeply invested will always find their way back one way or another. Do it if you want to, and maybe it’ll be your thing, or you’ll move on to other stuff. I’m probably going to have a channel about chronic conditions, for both people suffering and for family members who want to understand but don’t know how to talk to their family members about it. If you have something to contribute to the platform, out of your love for it, why not? I wish you the best of luck with it!

I think even in a fantasy world, inhaling water in your lungs will lead to drowning.
@Archeris6 жыл бұрын
I am someone who as a kid also thought, why can they hold their breath so long under neath the water. But then I saw Evangelion and there their lungs also get filled with a substance. This has been taken from the real life phenomenon called Liquid Breathing as you also mentioned in this video. What I think is that the water in Spira might just hold a lot more oxygen then the water here on earth. Because it’s another world on itself. So that was my explanation. Not sure about holding the whole breath thing. That kinda throws my theory out of the window :P
@SBaby2 жыл бұрын

Two points I would add: 1: If the players were holding their breath to play blitzball, they'd have to be able to easily hold it for a lot longer than five minutes. Why? Because the whole purpose of blitz is to take peoples' minds off the fact that they might die at any time and so there's no way the sport would have the players riding the knife edge of drowning at the end of every match. This makes the "holding their breath" thing even more insane because it's not five min, it'd be more like ten or so for a safety margin. 2: More than once we see people get knocked unconscious while under water. It doesn't matter what sort of training you've done when you lose consciousness your autonomic functions resume, this includes breathing. This one, more than anything else puts the whole "holding their breath" thing to bed.

I know it's been a while since this video, but this also explains why the Fiends appeared at the game. Fiends are naturally attracted to the concentration of sphere water. Similar to what Cid said about the Airship and how he doesn't know how it flies or even how to really work the Sphere-osilo finder. Pretty cool.

Just wanted to add a detail to the whole "but Blitzball is just 5 minutes per halftime" thing: a halftime would take even more time for the players than just 5 minutes. The 5 minutes are just the active play time. We also have to consider that the players have to get inside the pool and to their places before the halftime starts and out of the pool for the break between halftimes. I'm pretty sure that those factors alone could stretch the time spent under water per halftime to 10 minutes in the worst cases. I think that adds even more credibility to the concept of how pyreflies influence their ability to hold their breath, because we're getting way closer to the human limit with those times.

While I don't necessarily disagree with the logic behind pyreflies and basically all the arguments made in the video, personally, I would almost rather just have it left unexplained. When I played through the game I never questioned it, I was just like “in Spira holding your breath underwater is just a thing”. I mean, its a fantasy world, real world physics don't necessarily have to play a role in a fantastic world like Spira. When I saw Al Bhed had spiral pupils, I didn't consider the genetic evolution behind it, I was just like “oh cool they have spiral pupils” and many other things about the world. That's one part of worldbuilding in general I really like, when not everything is 100% set in stone with logic and rules, but there are phenomena that just... happen. And as long as it's consistent with the rest of the world, a logical explanation shouldnt be required Great points in the video though Burke, there was a surprising amount of effort considering the topic of the video, so good on you!

There are some NPCs in the game who will make statements that relate to this, one person warns Tidus not to exhaust himself before the tournament, because if he goes in while exhausted, he might drown. So many thoughts on this: Underwater rugby is a thing! Check it out some time. Real impressive what people can do, though of course it's not 5 minutes. Nobody talks about FFX characters being able to see underwater with their bare eyes without any issues. Nobody talks about their extremely baggy parachute clothing or how holding the ball does not impact their swimming technique and speed. Water in general is super special in FFX. Tidus' iconic weapon is made of it, and his name is very close to "tide". Especially in Dansg's pronunciation. xD
@crisedx6 жыл бұрын
This is either about Tidus' name as someone said... or the only other topic of debate (I could come uip on short notice) what is the actual name of Yojimbo's dog? There is the iconic laugh scene too, but pretty sure he has already got a video on that... Edit: maybe not, if the ultimania translations are involved it is unlikely to be one of those, since you shouldn't need to go to those to address either.
@lontrus6 жыл бұрын
Wasnt the dog's name Daigoro ?
@crisedx6 жыл бұрын
@@lontrus People are in two camps about that... afaik it hasn't been definitively confirmed anywhere. However, if we assume that the attack name refers to the dog (I forgot, so not sure, but the attack name might have an exclamation mark after it, making it an order) then yes his name is Daigoro. The fact that in X-2 Yuna's trainer pet is named Kogoro is also a likely reference to this (in Japanese the prefixes dai and ko can refer to size when talking about animals, big and small respectively e.g. "neko" is a cat "koneko" is a kitten). Those are basically the arguments for his name being Daigoro, however, it is not explicitly stated anywhere. If you dig through the game data in X the dog is internally called komainu, however, that is not a name either (or it is, but it refers to the style of dog he is based on, so its more like a breed... komainu is the name of the statues seen in Shinto shrines in Japan).

World of Final Fantasy calls one of the dogs in the Yojimbo fight as Daigoro in the Maxima update. However, Yojimbo also has a second dog in that fight named Gamut which wasn't in X.

Eenkin True, that to me might basically just be Square-Enix accepting the popular answer though. There has also been figures released where the dog has been referred as Daigoro. The problem some people have with stuff like this is it has never been confirmed in a way directly tied to FFX (or by the original developers). Having said all that I am still in the camp who is happy just to refer to the dog as Daigoro since that's the best name we have ever had for him.

super late to the party, but posting none-the-less. I agree that pyreflies could contribute, but it's also worth considering that the humans of Spira are "human" but don't have to be humans that are identical to us. There are many types of mammals that have extremely long dive times (to great depths). They do this with, as one might expect, adaptions that we simply don't have. Generally they have more myoglobin (a protein that store oxygn like hemoglobin but in the muscle instead of the blood) and store less air in their lungs. It's possible that plays a part as well, with the humans being able to increase the myoglobin in their bodies to seal-like levels. Of course, that doesn't explain the ronsos so perhaps the increased myoglobin is an effect of pyreflies 8) Honestly, it's a world with magic. It's not hard to think that the magic might have something to do with the things that differentiate that world from ours.

One important distinction to remember that while magic and pyreflies are both omnipresent in Spira _they are not identical._ I will say therefore that pyreflies are not the reason that certain people can breathe underwater, *magic is what provides that specific effect.* I also think it limitless, on that account. *But pyreflies **_are also involved,_** and have to be;* we know that pyreflies can both permeate into and coalesce to form solid bodies. But where additional solidity of body would be _extremely_ necessary would be in situations like the deep dive, where Tidus, Rikku, Brother, et. al., uncovered and reactivated the Celsius. No ordinary human body could stand the crushing pressures of the deep unassisted, but a pyrefly-reinforced body? Absolutely! This same phenomenon may be also how one's 'hit points' increase. Underwater breathing is an Al Bhed trait that seems to be passed on from parent to child, so there is a genetic component. Half Al Bhed Yuna appears to have lost the genetic coin toss. I would say that ancient Al Bhed (maybe in the days of the machina cities) analyzed and determined what gave rise to their ability to breathe underwater, and devised a treatment for other Spirans (human, Guado, etc.); this treatment is expensive, time-consuming, and probably uncomfortable, which is why only teams or occasional Free Agents are able to obtain it.

In Mobius' event with ffx when Tidus was feeling down Wol tells him it's okay to feel sad and that 'when you're done u can float back up from the depth', and Tidus' reply to him 'you might think twice before giving that kind of advice, remember I'm a blitzball player, If I want to I can stay underwater for a looong time' Wol then answers 'do it if you want to, we'll wait until you come back up for air' If mobius is canon then people in ffx need air after a while from being under water, Yuna and Tidus' famous scene was under water and it looked like they both stayed without air for more than 5 minutes. Apparently Square isn't consistent about how ffx characters could stay submerged for a long time
@XaW846 жыл бұрын
I agree with you, but it still leaves the question of why Tidus never had seen or heard of pyreflies before coming to Spira. I mean, he played in Zanarkand inside the blitzball arena there. And being a pro player he would know the ins and outs of the game there, including how he is able to breathe under water for so long. Unless the aeons forgot/chose not to include pyreflies in the dream?
@XaW846 жыл бұрын
Otacon464 Yes, but he would have heard of them before. Any athlete of a high level knows about the finer aspects of their sport, even if the details of it is obscure. The same goes for other things, like summoners. Like Yunalesca they excists, but Tidus cannot even pronounce Summoner when he first hears of them in Spira.

I would like to add, that we do not know to much about the different races. Obviously Ronsos are quite slow and strong under water while Guados seem to be quite fast and Al Bhed become better in everything. Luca, Kilika and Besaid are also very close to the water (ok as nearly all cities in Spira ...) - so I assume many of the inhabitants are fishermen (as can be seen in Besaid and Kilika) so they probably have to be good swimmers for their normal work. Nevertheless: We do not know how long a "normal" Ronso is able to hold breath without any training. But we do know, that every race tends to behave different under water. Btw: Are Yuna/Tidus etc ever mentioned to be "human"? And even if - well its fantasy ^^ But: Thanks for all the resarch - great analysis for a ffx topic as always!

How big is a blitz arena? The size of a tennis court? The size of a football field? Considering the fact that the blitz sphere is, yes, a sphere in shape, this means that the volume of water pressing down on your body would be equal to half the size of the court when at center of the sphere. It would be completely ridiculous to expect normal human physiology to allow for this kind of performance even with the most rigorous of training. It's magic, guys.

For me, the best proof of them actually breathing underwear, versus holding their breath is when Tidus washes up on Besaid at the beginning of the game. He's face down in the water, UNCONSCIOUS. When you're unconscious, it is physically impossible to hold your breath. Therefore, he is breathing in the water.

During the section where the group has to go through the Thunder Plains to reach the next area, we (the players) have to dodge lighting bolts along the way. We reach a Inn, and inside we see Mister Mika. What I wanna know is, how the living hell did this old man dodge a hundred lighting bolts!?! ...okay, maybe its not that questionable, BUT STILL! Me and my friends would ALWAYS question that lol but who cares! like I said, Its "Final Fantasy," anything goes. Great video dansg08!

I am 100% on the training bandwagon here. My "proof" is when Yuna gets kidnapped by the al bhed, ONLY waka and Tidus go down and rescue her, while she is incapsulated in a spehere of air, also no other chars are shown in water unless they play blitz

No amount of training prevents you from drowning while unconscious and underwater. Has to be some kind of magic.

I think that a good reason would be, that the reason that certain people can play Blitzball and others can’t is because they are born with the ability to breath under water. Would be a reason why there is only a few people who actually play Blitzball not everyone. I think that might be the reason or lore based explaination
@kentchamberlain57202 жыл бұрын
There are pearl divers in Indonesia who can hold their breath for up to fifteen minutes while swimming deep underwater for pearls. I always figured that was the explanation.

My head cannon is that the people of Spira have evolved to become half fish people and are able to breathe underwater for extended periods of time.

Agree and disagree..... can we remember this a game with a giant flying whales and tiger like humans. Who's to say the 'humans in this game cant breath longer underwater? It's a game. However you cant ignore the evidence in the game. And YES Pyoflies make them breath under water, It pretty much explained in the ultimatamian. The reason people are refusing to believe this is because, a few characters in the game including Yuna make reference to training themselves to breath underwater. And there is no other explanation in the game how they breath underwater other then this. So you cant blame peoples attitude and logic on this. Yes training is required to breath underwater, but it's not training of the lungs, its training of the pyoflies within ones body. If people want to argue you cant control pyoflies I'd argue against that. This is why spira has unsent, as well as unsent that can control the aging of thier bodies by manipulating the Pyoflies. Also a persons emotions can control the person's pyoflies which makes them stay attached to the world after they have died - in the form of fiends. Remember the ultimaianian says there is a evident connection between plyoflies and water, the body is 60% water and we see the most Plyoflies come from bodies in this game. Having agreed with Plyoflies theory, I do totally disagree with the blitz ball stadium shapes theory. Wakka tells you its technology that does this as certain technologies are allowed and not allowed by the temple. You ain't changing my mind about that part and that's just total head canon until someone shows me proof or evidence that suggests this. Water may be linked to plyoflies but it doesnt have a mind of it's own and no machine in the whole game is seen manipulating the plyoflies. If that was true then maybe it would be possible for machines to do the sending or control fiends.

I think it's something you can learn. Al bhed might be better at it. Yuna attempts to learn to hold her breath underwater in the eternal calm so she can't automatically...but she doesn't die when she's under water in Macalania. The pyreflie theory makes sense since that water had them. The al bhed have a lot of "weird" genetic differences. In X-2 Yuna has a long ponytail in the back with hair out the bottom. I looked it up and it says that al bhed hair grows faster than normal so...who knows?

I vote for training over pyreflies or a combination of the 2 as it's made clear at several points that Rikku, Wakka and Tidus are the only ones in the group who can do it. If it was pure pyreflies then they'd all be able to do it.

Again, I give you Final Fantasy X-2. Not everyone is seen underwater on regular intervals in the replacement blitz team. Paine hasn't had any training.

I question why anyone would compare spirans to humans in general... its pretty clear the average spiran is well beyond the level of fitness of an average human, and their peak physical condition is being able to cleave through armored tanks with what is probably a pretty blunt sword. I don't discount the pyreflies at all. But also Yuna states in different versions of X-2 that in her literal _one year of training_ she can now hold her breath for between 2'41" to over 4' depending on the amount of blitzball you play and what version you're playing. Yuna is a novice player, who trains in the sea. I mean, its relatively easy to see spirans shrugging off or doing things that even peak human athletes literally could not accomplish, and that's not involving water or pyreflies at all. Cutting through metal with brute force. Throwing _people_ seemingly without effort. Jumping huge distances (even Lulu does this). The simple fact is, spirans are better than humans in every way. They may still die a lot, but that isn't because they're our equals, its because they're dealing with things orders of magnitude more dangerous than anything we could ever encounter. I mean, lets be fair here... these ARE a people who can _accidentally or intentionally fail to die and effectively become immortal as a result instead of dying._ They could also turn into normal fiends... but this seems to be more on their strength of personality than anything else. Eastern ghost lore type stuff. Also, consider the opening of X, where Tidus and Rikku do a whole survey and a skirmish with a giant octopus, without ever taking a breath. Even if you assume these were really brief, that's still a lot of activity.

I've only played through the game once and dropped ffx-2 pretty quickly. Did Dream Zanarkand know about pyreflies? I forget if that's something Tidus "learned" in Spira or not.
