Dark Souls III Lore - Crestfallen Hawkwood
I know Hawkwood is never explicitly referred to as "Crestfallen" in the game, but I wanted to include it in the title as I've had a lot of people go "who?" when I say Hawkwood, but everyone seems to know him by that unofficial moniker!

I always found it interesting that when you fight Hawkwood in the Abyss Watchers boss room he uses the greatsword paired with the dagger (what he and his brothers would have wielded before he abandoned them) instead of the sword and shield. This, to me, shows Hawkwood overcoming his fear and doubts, no longer having to hide behind a shield. Just a thought.

I think the abyss watchers aren´t using shields because in the legend of artorias, artorias left his shield to protect sif, he fought without a shield since then. I believe thats why they´re not using shields

"Since then" well that's the thing, we are probably the only person (outside of maybe Chester and Elizabeth) who ever saw Artorias after that event. He lost his shield, went on a rampage, and was then killed by the Chosen Undead. Nobody knows about that though, that's why most of the CU's feats in Oolacile are attributed to Artorias, as Elizabeth remarks.

It's true though, he does need our dragon stone. Let's assume he went up the elevator (that's why it's already up when we get to Archedragon peak) and so he didn't fight the Wyvern. His stone is the dragon headstone, which only transforms your head not your body, we get the torso stone, he needs that to be a dragon proper. And honestly I'm willing to believe that so long as you don't die, being in that form means you don't hollow and will grow bigger like the 'statues' sitting down around the second bonfire.

just a thought when listening to hawkwoods dialogue i got a feeling of bitter sarcasm, especially the part where he says "we aren't fit to lick their boots, don't you think?" right after that he laughs it feels very sarcastic.

Hawkwood's shield is a symbol of his purity, his resistance to the abyss. The rest of the Abyss Watchers, in the end, were infected by the Abyss, just as Artorius was when he went bezerk.

Hawkwood sometimes sits by a grave, a grave with the abyss watchers sword, in the untended graves there is a special ring by this grave, the hornet ring, Ciaran was the user of this ring or at least it was hers, the dark shrine handmaiden sells the artorias set, so I think artorias was buried near firelink shrine and ciaran visited him, ps. Theres a black knight greataxe holder nearby which is pretty funny.

if the path of the dragon was made by the nameless king to find a new drake to fight against and Orinstine became that drake that we fight in his boss fight, perhaps it mean that only one may complete the path at a time because the nameless king uses the soul or some remains of his original storm drake to complete the transformation of someone he finds worthy, that is assuming of course the theory of his drake being Orinstine is true

What´s the chance of the Nameless King having babies with the Storm King and the offspring are the blue drakes of DS1? They have similar colors to the Storm King, four limbs and lighting attacks like the Firstborn. They are the only drakes that can breath lighting which should be impossible for drakes and dragons.

The curse is really placed upon us by Gwyn. We learn about this in the Ringed City DLC. Gwyn was afraid of the power of humanity which spewed forth form the pygmies' chest cavity. He was terrified of the immortality of these pygmies, and so he put the Darksign brand on them. Thing of that flaming circle as a prison for our humanities. Once we die, we begin to lose our humanity. Because of the brand, however, we are no longer able to gain more humanity or produce more humanity. Thus, as we keep on dying, we lose more and more of our humanity, and the brand does NOT allow us to regain it back. Over time, we lose all of our humanity, and we turn into mindless husks, the hollows that we were before the Darksoul was shared with us by the fertive pygmy. What Yoel of Londor does when he unlocks our true potential is... he removes the brand from our chest cavity. From then on, we continue to gain more and more humanity, even if we do die. And, you'll notice that in your inventory you get a black circle item... a Dark Sign without flames encarcerating it. And so, we become stronger and stronger, the idealized pygmy: immortal, without being able to hollow. Eventually, we even marry Anri, and their dark soul joins with ours, to become a stronger gathering of the dark soul. The more souls a pygmy consumes, the stronger the dark soul becomes within that pygmy, and the closer we come to completely uniting the dark soul into one large soul again.

On the basis of if the character has a connection with Lothric would the player's character be the same one from the first game and the fact that you have been the one to hunt down the royal bloodline down to lothric be a connection, Is it just that he's the last lord of cinder before the final boss or is Orbeck or Gotthard the one to have a conection to lothric

Is it possible that the Abysswatchers originate from Carim? The parrying dagger in DS1 states that the Knights of Carim do not fight with shields, which might explain why they don't emulate Artorias to that extent. Additionally, the armour they wear would fall closer to the kind of clothing that Marvelous Chester wears than to any other form of armour or clothing from other areas. Finally, the skin tone does appear to be very pale, much like the Carim model in DS1.

It may also be that Carim was consumed by the Abyss, leaving the remaining knights - the Abysswatchers - homeless. They therefore made their home in Farron Keep, and took a scorched-earth approach to other lands in light of what happened to Carim.

When you posted that possible weapons for Bloodborne I mentioned a pair of axes that turns into a staff with a saw at the end and the old hunters dlc has a mace with an attachable saw and when I left a comment on your nameless king video you said you would like to see a painted world 2.0 and now the ashes of ariandel dlc trailer shows what appears to be the painted world.

Hawkwood is named after Sir John Hawkwood of the White Company. He was a mercenary warlord from England that lived out his military career in northern Italy and died in 1394

The theory that Dragons are immune to the undead curse makes a bit more sense when you think that Gwyn eradicated them. He realized they could not be subjugated through the curse so killing them was the only option to retain power for Gwyn.

When your discussing the description of his shield, the "Defeat" could be defeat of his mind perhaps? Eg, a negative mindset, that he couldn't accomplish whatever task he was intended for? (Legion, path of dragon, ashen, whatever) This could be backed by when we fight him, he has left his shield behind, and shows a great of confidence, well, more then he did when we first met him, with his shield being a very much a representation of his doubt.

The reason they don't use shields is probably the same one Gerhman uses in Bloodborne: speed is most important and not using a shield lets you move quicker. The hunters clothes are very similar to the undead legion's. Gerhman could be a member of a descendent group of the legion.

I´d think Hawkwood didnt manage to make it up there to the statue on his own. As for why the abyss watchers use no shields, I guess they want to honour the Artorias, who fought and fell to the Abyss, or maybe rather that shield was some kind of achievement they found themselves not worthy to have, since they fell to the abyss, like artorias did. the shield might be a symbol of completion and perfection that none of them ever achieved.

My notes The farron legion don't use a shield (For many reasons) because in the end Artorias was unable to use his shield, instead using it to protect Sif. The tale of the abyswalker as well, in truth, ends with artiors being defeated by the choosen undead who then continues the story to the end, however the truth was twisted and artorias was there throughout the whole story instead, presumably without his shield. The legion will have fought that this made him more aggresive/powerful against the abyss and so, like in other ways, mimicked this. On the path of dragons, I came up with something interesting relating to the nameless king and orinstien. They are the same person. In item descriptions oristen is said to leave in search of this king, who was wiped from history after his betrayal, this being somethnig to do with dragons. I believe that since the firstborn was not human, but a god he was able to do what humans could not, and complete the journey down the path of dragons. The king of storms is the firstborn, stripped of his lightning powers along with the title of deity, he was left with a worn down version of his power, the storm, much like the tailbone weapons in DS3 which possess the same storm like powers. now, the reason I belive ornstien is the nameless king is because, to try and save the firstborns reputation he took the role of the firstborn, stripping himself of everything from his weapon and armor, to his very name, becoming "nameless" and fighting alongside the king of storms (The firstborn) like the two used to do in the old days. This would also explain why the nameless king weild a spear since the firstborn left his *sword* on his farther grave before leaving for good. Ornstien, a master of spears, obtained a new one much more suiting to a king status. Even the transition from phases shows similaties to Orenstien since he absorbs the king of storms to obtain his power, Just like how Smough and the illusion of orestien did in DS1, but he is hesitant as in the cutscen you can see the nameless kings hands shaking before he thrusts his weapon into the dragon. The only reason he does this is to ensure that he defeats us....

We talk about history even though sometimes the accounts of those events are written hundreds of years after they happened.
