A few things you missed. 1. Hodrick's armor, or at least his helmet, resembles the Undead Legion's uniform. 2. There's a lot more connecting Hodrick and therefore Sirris to Mirrah. Aside from the fact that Creighton invades her and Hodrick's shield looking like the Mirrah shield, let's not forget that all of Lucatiel's equipment can be found in the Undead Settlement, sorta. The generic Mirrah knight's stuff (the armor and shield) are found in the Settlement, while the stuff that explicitly belongs to her (her mask and the Hollowslayer Greatsword, which has a description that basically says "hey this was Lucatiel's sword) can be obtained in ways that link it to the Settlement. Her mask is obtained by giving Pickle Pee Pump-a-rum a Vertabrae Shackle, and the sword by transposing the soul of the Curse-rotted Greatwood (suggesting that it was embedded in the tree, see Arstor's Spear description). So, from this, we can tell that Hodrick did try to join the Undead Legion (the fact that he doesn't need to die to get his ashes is either an oversight or just blah-blah-time-is-convoluted-blah-blah) and that the trio hails from Mirrah or that Mirrah is part of the sunless realms. "But why does trading a shackle to get her mask prove anything?" Because Siegbrau, that's why. Siegward makes Estus Soup, and two of the three locations you find it have Warriors of Sunlight/Solaire memorabilia. The first pot of it (in the Undead Settlement) in a room with the Warriors of Sunlight covenant sigil and the second pot (in Farron Keep) is right next to Solaire's talisman. Siegbrau for Solaire's armor, plus the previous facts, suggest that Siegward is a Warrior of Sunlight. But more importantly, it sets the precedent that the crow trades have lore significance, for the most part anyway. Lightning Urns are tangentially related to the Warriors of Sunlight because they were made by Lothric Knights, who are established as sun worshippers (and possess the altar of Sunlight in this game). The Mendicant's Staff is also tangential, but the enemy that uses it summons Havel's knights and Drakeblood knights, so maybe that means something. Holy shit, you could just make a second video talking about all of this. But yeah, Sirris and Hodrick are connected to Lucatiel and Mirrah. Oh and Siegward is confirmed as both our Sunbro and Onionbro at the same time.

Sometimes I have to choose what and what not to talk about - the helmet looking like the legion hat was something I intentionally chose not to talk 'bout - I agree that it could be a good connection, although personally I think it's just a coincidence, judging from the item descriptions, rather like the Paladin Leeroy / Royal Soldier helm being near identical. That's the good thing about the comments, though! Can go ham there as don't need to worry 'bout video lengths or going off on tangents for like 20 minutes haha.

In support of the handmaiden being the grandmother, selling you the blossom at such a cheap price could be a roundabout way to have you help Sirris while maintaining the appearance of not caring. You buy the blossom because its cheap, see that Sirris is going to the pit, and decide to join her in putting Hodrick to rest.
@JustSpag
@JustSpag 7 жыл бұрын
Perhaps the handmaiden is selling the blossoms because she feels conflicted. she's caught between concern for her family and the insanity surrounding them, and wants to get rid of the items to distance herself from the fouls' errands?

More likely to be the ashes of sirris' father, in all probability he married into the family and was despised by sirris' grandmother. In an effort to earn the grandparents respect, he no doubt went to join the Legion of farron. Rejected by the legion, but not without hope he took up residence in farron seaking to grow stronger to gain the legion's approval to join, and by doing so gain the approval of his mother in Law. Years passed only to turn hollow without realizing still clinging to his unobtainable dreams. However the legion of farron finally took notice of him. A letter addressed to Hodrick arrived giving notification of his son in law turning to a hollow. Hodrick, feeling responsible for not having acted sooner on his daughter's behalf, sends a response asking the Legion to allow him to put the boy down. Afterall he is family. Hodrick kills his son in law, finding the god shackles in him, and goes mad as he travels to the undead settlement

I think the Handmaid knows what Sirris is up to, and doesn't approve. When Sirris first offers the player her summon sign she says "...I hear that cordial intrusion lays the path to embers..." If you haven't bought the Soapstone from the Handmaid, she'll give a very similar line about "cordial intrusion," but calls it "soppy gossip." Additionally, she'll buy "regular" budding green blossoms from the player for *more* than she sells the unique bgb with Sirris' note attached. If you subscribe to the theory that Hodrick once belonged to the order of "holy" Slave Knights that Gael belongs to, and that the Mound Makers' madness is secretly a plot to 'unkindle' ash for the Emma/Firelink faction by breaking their shackles, then it would seemingly follow that the Handmaid knows what Hodrick is doing and approves of it as, even with her stated selfish motivations, more ash coming through firelink means more souls being spent at her shop. Another point that may help tie the theory together is that the NPC cage spider in the Undead Settlement invites us to 'become nana's shade," seemingly in reference to the Mound Makers, meaning that we would be working (unwittingly,) for 'nana' in a manner similar to the way the Pale Shade works for Yulia. Nana, of course, is a word for grandmother, and could refer to Emma or the Handmaid.

I think Gael's equipment from Ashes of Ariendel hints at a connection to Hodrick. Hodrick may have been an Irithyl Slave Knight. Their equipment even looks familiar. Plus the "Shackles of the Gods" within the mound makers vertebrae may refer to the fact that they were "Slaves" to Irithyl. Also, the term "family" may not be as literal as you think. Some Lore in the DLC hints at worshipers of the old divinity later reconvening amongst each other and finding solace as a "family". Sirris never refers to Hodrick as "my grandad" but simply "Grandad". Also the line the caged hollow says in the Settlement hints that these may simply be "titles". " *Another* Nana disappeared, the grandson carries a cage. He ever has his cage. So step into the cage and become *Nana's shade*." This infers that maybe there was an original family. I.E. "The Royal Family", and the subjects of the Old Divinity keep memory of this fact by taking monikers from said family. Also, not sure if you plan on making a video specifically for the Mound makers covenant, but this is a very interesting discovery I noticed. So in the description for the covenant badge, it says that followers see a symbol within the vertebrae shackle: "The shackles of the Gods." You look at the Vertebrae and see at first, just an abstract image.... now. Take a look at the murals in father Ariendal's boss room. The image depicts two hooded figures looming over two snakes... two serpents. Now, look back at the covenant badge and tell me what you see...

As with most things, it's definitely open to interpretation - I think Sirris is supposed to be Hodrick's biological grand-daughter, from the way they speak of each other. Compared to say, Henryk in Bloodborne; IIRC Gascoigne's daughter refers to him as "granddad" as well, but I think that's more like a term of endearment than Henryk being Gascoigne's father.
@Garl_Vinland
@Garl_Vinland 7 жыл бұрын
But see, they refer to their respective "Grandads" the exact same way. Sirris never says "My grandfather" just "Grandfather" or "Grandad". So that along with the evidence of "The family" I mentioned earlier makes me believe these terms are titles. Good to bring up Henryk as a reference. I would also like to bring up "The Pinwheel" boss from DS1.

If the Hand Maid didn't care, she would not have asked about the ash. The Ash was more likely another relative. There would have been no reason for Sirris to show up at the Shrine if she had no relation to the Hand Maid, and then again immediately after transferring the ash. It definitely has connection to them both. Mayhap the ash is the reason she promised to kill the grandfather. I figure the Hand Maid makes the bouquet available to you because it is more use to you at this point, than to her.

My take: The Handmaid is Sirris' grandmother, the Dreamchaser was Sirris' father (who may have abandoned her with her grandparents to chase his dreams), and her "selling" the blossom is her way of requesting that you help her granddaughter put down her mad husband. Why she doesn't just ask outright, I'm not sure, but I suspect it's because she's either A) too proud, B) trying to emotionally distance herself from her husband's killing, or C) just kind of contrary that way (after all, it's her job to sell you things for sweet, sweet souls...).

I'm surprised you didn't mention the Grandson. When you start the path of joining the Mound Makers, the gibbet undead sing a disjointed song about "Grandson Carries a Cage". I took that to mean that Hodrick's Grandson, Sirris' brother, is hollowed and helping out Hodrick out of some familial need. Its also nice being able to watch your videos again, i've not played through the DLC yet, so I don't want to spoil it for myself.

They might not be related? IDK, but if Hodrick and Sirris are standard player-model NPCs, her brother being a big ol' cage-zombie is a little weird to me. Also, the cage dudes said "ANOTHER nana disappeared," implying there's lots of people who have come to the Settlement and the Pit looking for elder relatives.

Nice video on a cool character who may give us more hints about DS lore than many realize. I have been chasing a theory that Sirris' and Hodrick's story fit nicely into. Though, part of my theory does contradict what you say at 2:55. You say that you're certain that Sirris is referring to Gwyndolin when she speaks of the Divinity. I believe she speaks of someone else. The theory that I'm chasing is that the nameless moon who Sirris used to serve and refers to as the Divinity predates Gwyndolin and is in fact Gwyndolin's mother. That none other than the black-haired witch, rogue deity, who is considered to have a great range of influence even as gods are converned z in her Nice video on a cool character who may give us more hints about DS lore than many realize. None other than the black-haired witch, rogue deity, Goddess of Sin, and original founder of the Blades of the Darkmoon Velka. There are a bunch of parallels between Velka and Gwyndolin. Gwyndolin’s catalyst cast spells but scales on faith while Velka’s talisman casts miracles but scales off intelligence. Gwyndolin’s covenant uses Velka’s Book of the Guilty. The purple glow from the Darkmoon Blade miracle matches the purple glow of Velka’s miracles. Also, I find it interesting that Sunlight and Darkmoon are not just different from each other but are mirrors of each other. Light is the opposite of Dark and Sun is the opposite of Moon. What’s Gwyndolin’s title? Dark Sun Gwyndolin. Seems to me that since it’s reasonable to assume that the “Sun” in Gwyndolin’s title is derived from his father’s title Lord of Sunlight, that it would also be reasonable to assume that the “Dark” in his title is inherited from his mother’s title. Darkmoon. Ever notice how Velka’s Pardoner, Oswald seems to be standing there doing a reverse Praise the Sun? The emote the player learns from Oswald looks nothing like that pose he idles in. I’m willing to bet that that reverse Praise the Sun would be named Praise the Moon if it were in the game. So, I ask that you suspend your disbelief for a moment and follow me through how this place out if we assume that Velka is actually Darkmoon Velka and mother to Gwyndolin. Gwyn has at least two children: The Nameless King and Gwynevere with one woman (perhaps Fina known for her fateful beauty). They’re comparable in size to Gwyn and known for their strength and beauty respectively. Gwyn’s lastborn Gwyndolin, however, was born from a different mother, Velka. He turns out to be dramatically different from his older siblings being smaller, weaker, and possessing powers that utilize moonlight instead of lightning and sunlight. He’s even described as a “legitimate god, but he is also a Moon sorcerer” as if to call special attention to gods not often practicing moon sorcery. Gwyn leaves to link the fire while Gwyndolin was yet unborn or too young to remember his father. Velka raises him as a daughter and teaches him his moon sorcery. She is after all a black-haired witch. Velka leaves Anor Londo along with everyone else leaving Gwyndolin behind. Gwyndolin assumes command of his mother’s Blades of the Darkmoon and the mantle of Darkmoon deity. Using his mother’s book to hunt sinners and aid those who would continue his father’s legacy in linking the fire. Velka assumes new identities through the ages in different lands including Caitha the goddess of tears as well as the nameless moon. In each land she establishes a following, grants her warriors a miracle catalyst that scales of intelligence, names her warriors knights, and teaches them the traditions of the Darkmoon. That’s why Sirris who seems to never have been to Irithyll or know of Gwyndolin, yet still knows the Darkmoon Loyalty gesture as well as Darkmoon miracles.

If you pay close enough attention you'll find that Hodrick is in fact, Hollow. His opening dialogue and Sirrus' promise can put some solid truth to the matter. She does state the she promised to put her Grandad down if ever he lost himself and in the world of Dark Souls, well, losing ones self or sanity can only result in one thing. Turning Hollow. It is possible that the ashes from the Dreamchaser are Hodrick's. His armour has a steady resemblance to the Legion set. Albeit a bit heftier.
@SilverMont
@SilverMont 7 жыл бұрын
I don't think hollows are able to speak, though? Hodrick still has his faculties when we meet him; he's "sane" in that he knows who he is, where he is, and can hold a conversation with us. We've encountered characters who are physically hollow, in that they look gross, but aren't "mentally" hollow - that's when you become a mindless zombie, I think.

When it comes to the grandmother you've overlooked the caged hollow NPC. "Another nana disappeared, so the grandson carries a cage, he ever has a cage. And nana's is never coming back. So come into the cage and become nana's shade" Just saying that this weakens the shrine handmaiden link who is more or less just an item collector.

I think the Dreamchaser's Ashes are just a catalyst for our relationship with Sirris to grow. The Dreamchaser was any knight who wanted to become part of the Farron's Undead Legion. He or she had a very lofty goal in mind, something they believed in until they died. Although the sarcastic, handmaiden doesn't understand why someone would waste their lives on such a pursuit, the fact that we considered it important and gave it to her proves to Sirris that we have the right type of values--values that she also believes in, such as following your beliefs to the end. Hodrick is just a Hollow. He hasn't fully hollowed yet, but he is in the process. There is some theory that Lucatil started the Mound-Maker's faction because giving Piddle-pee Pump-a-Rump a vertebra bone gives you Lucatiel's mask! So, perhaps after Lucatiel went mad, she ended up starting the Mound Makers. Sirris wants to redeem her grandfather, and so she hunts him in order to put him down. Sirris, too, is Undead, and she will go Hollow as well, if she finds herself without a duty (after slaying her grandfather and in doing so redeeming him), AND you deny her. She will join her father as a Hollow in the Mound Maker's Pit. And as far as Rosaria, she may be a daughter of Gwyn who was forgotten by the other gods. She was forgotten in the Cathedral of the Deep, and after Aldrich took over, she had to protect herself by any means necessary. Perhaps she hates the other gods for this, and she created her covenant in order to punish the gods for forsaking her.

Best waifu in souls forget your emerald herald. Few things one why can't a dark souls quest line ever have a happy ending? Another thing I don't Sirris is undead and or turning hallow cause every single time I summoned her or helped her during her questline she never used the estus or ashen estus which as we know only undead can use and she never mentions of being undead or unkindled. So if she was undead or unkindled wouldn't she be on the same quest as you to return the lords to their thrones including the most vile of all basters Aldrich the one who ate the divine lord Gwyndolin who she swore to serve. But that is if as you said she knew who he/she was.

Honestly there could be a myriad of reasons the handmaid sells the budding Green Blossom. She is bound to her duty as the Shrines Handmaid, and if she really is a former high priestess it would make sense that she wouldn't keep any personal items. Instead using anything useful to help the unkindled fulfill their Duty. Or maybe it doesn't matter and is just a way to clue people in on the connection between the characters.

Now this theory may be farfetched but I do believe that it has a link to Sirris and her family line. First off, in the DLC AoA we meet the Livid Pyromancer Dunnel who drops the Parting pyromancy flame catalyst which mentions how Dunnel lost his spouse and how he offered his original pyromancy flame. The link I came to was that either Dunnel and the spouse is Sirris’s parents with the idea in mind that Sirris had an alternative goal which could be to find how her parents disappeared which left her to seek her grandparents Hodrick, The Handmaid and possibly her Brother. My other theory would be that Dunnel was Sirris’s husband (but I don’t know as the catalyst describes the spouse as hideous and that Sirris is so cute) and how she faked her death to become a Blade of the Darkmoon to seek vengeance on the fingers who killed either her parents when she was young or her brother. An interesting idea I had was the resemblance on how both Hodrick and Dunnel are pyromancers and that both are described as wondering spirits slaying anyone who come before them. However, this is all speculation and that it must be taken with a grain of salt. I hope this little bit of insight helped anyone and feel free to ask me anymore questions. Thanks Silver Mont, Alex for allowing me to have a hand and expressing my opinion on Sirris’s questline.

Another possibility is that the handmaid just feels it is pointless to interfere. You and others will do as you will and she is too old and frail to affect much. But maybe watching you help Sirris she begins to hope. That might explain why she sells you the item. A sort of veiled request to continue helping her foolish granddaughter.

If the handmaiden actually is Sirris' grandmother, maybe she offered it to the Ashen One in hopes he/she would go help her? Sirris might have intended to fight Hodrick herself, and therefore did not request our help, it could be for some oath she took to stop him from disgracing the family any further in his madness?

Depending on whether Hodrick is the maternal or the paternal grandfather, it's a safe bet that the ashes were from Sirris' mother or father respectively. After his child's attempt to become a legionnaire resulted in death, he had to keep his mind occupied to keep him from hollowing. He mistakenly came to the conclusion that it was the vertebrae shackle that keeps them chained rather than the dark sign. He did this so he could save his granddaughter from meeting the same fate as her parent, as she was in service of the gods. I think Mirrah, but also Irithyl and Anor Londo are considered sunless realms, and 'sunless realms' just refers to the collection of areas that the darkmoon blade has power in. Because she's from Mirrah, but works in Irithyll in service of Anor Londo, she just goes with 'sunless realms'.

The easy answer to why the Handmaiden sells the blossom is something she says. "Is it not our curse to sup on death?" It could have all the meaning in the world to her, but if you're willing to give her souls for it, she's willing to give it up.

Here's the part that bugs me about the idea that the handmaid is Sirris's grandmother: Sirris is from an alternate world. There are two Hodricks running around, as you point out. "Our" Hodrick is crushed by the collapsing ceiling of the Pit of Hollows in the Curse-Rotted Greatwood fight. Yet even if this happens, we can still summon Hodrick in the Crucifixion Woods through his summon sign. And then we're summoned to Sirris's world to fight Hodrick in the Pit (where, if we pause to look up, we see that the ceiling is intact, not broken in like it is in our world). So, Sirris is not from our world, and her grandfather is not "our" Hodrick who gives us the Mound-Makers covenant item, but the alternate Hodrick we fight alongside Sirris. So...is the handmaid also from the alternate world? Is she not actually Sirris's grandmother, but instead the version of the grandmother from our world? (And...could it be possible that the Dreamchaser's Ashes are from "our" Sirris? That's verging on the tinfoil-hat area of speculation that usually has "Velka" somewhere in the text, but that might be what ties it all together: why delivering the ashes serves as the trigger event, why the handmaid sells us the blossom Another, less strange speculation: the handmaid sells us the blossom because she wants us to go help Sirris. I mean, she sells it for 10 souls. Ten! For an _upgraded_ version of an item that she sells for 1000. And this is the woman whose cynical desire for souls is so intense that if you murder her, she'll come back, cackle a bit, and basically tell you "now that we understand each other, keep forking over the souls." The handmaid knows Sirris will get curbstomped by Hodrick (...I've had Hodrick slaughter Sirris at the start of that fight because I paused to buff a weapon instead of charging straight in to get his attention multiple times), and though she can't bring herself to actually up and ask our help for whatever reason, she waves the bait in front of us so that we can barely help but take it.

Dark Souls has never been too consistent with those things - people existing in multiple worlds or whatever. We know that if a phantom dies, they go back to their world. But ostensibly if you kill a physical body, they are gone for good. Unless they are undead and respawn, obviously. So just what's going on with Hodrick, I'm really not sure. Same deal with Anri and Aldrich.

HOLLLY FUCKING SHIT, LISTEN TO THIS. Remember that caged hollow in the undead settlement near the guy that takes you to the Moundmakers' Pit of Hollows that sings that weird shit carrying a cage coz his nana's disappeared? He could be a brother of sirris, or atleast some relative. Here's my reasoning: his lines talk about a nana that's disappeared and we know that the shrine handmaiden is possibly sirris' grandmother. Now, if the handmaiden is Sirris' grandmother and husband to Hodrick she left the settlement and came to the shrine, apparently abandoning her family possibly because her husband is a homicidal madman and her grandson has a cage fetish. Furthermore, the cage hollow basically gives us the hint about joining the Moundmakers, a covenant of which Hodrick is a part of. So yeah, Hodrick and the handmaiden are the grandparents of Sirris and that cage hollow. EH?! EH?!??!!

Silver Mont One of the scholar statues in the archives depicts a scholar who resembles a heap of twigs and branches like Aldia who also was a scholar. The private mentor of Lothric is theorized to be Aldia since Aldia gave you the option to not link the flame ( Not being the king) Lothric also is against the linking of the fire but that idea was influenced by his mentor.

Yeah, the spell is the thing that remarks on Lothric's mentor, IIRC. Some people think that means Sulyvahn - I think it means Aldia. Personally, I would've enjoyed seeing a little more of him. I don't think the dreamchaser ashes have any connection to Sirris' family, at least not directly: they could be the ashes of some random fool and the handmaid just comment on them because they remind her of her husband's foolish dreams; perhaps Hodrick abandoned his family to chase the legion but could never find them hence why he became a mad spirit in the end?

Four beings were required in Dark Souls to reach Gwyn who, at the time, was the first, and thus the only, Lord of Cinder. Even so, within the context of the game, those four beings are Seathe the Scaleless, Gravelord Nito, the Witch of Izalith, and the Four Kings.

If the link the fire ending is any indication the power of the flame is fading even after being linked. In dark souls 1 when you link the fire there is a massive explosion but in dark souls 3 after countless linkings when you link the fire it struggles to even engulf your character as if all the power it had is all but spent. The lords of cinder's souls might be the only things left with the power to act as kindling at this point.
@SilverMont
@SilverMont 7 жыл бұрын
At this point it's almost like a self-fulfilling prophecy. Ostensibly we need the souls, but that doesn't really seem to be the case. It's more like we use their souls to open up the way to the kiln, more than anything else. And as others have mentioned, that's very much like the first game; we offer up great souls to the Lordvessel to open the way to the kiln so we can defeat Gwyn and link the fire with our soul.
