I wonder what'd happen if you put Greirat, Patches, Pate, Blige and Scirvir in a room together. Every form of Patches, obviously.

You have to ask yourself a question, though: Is being a Fire Keeper really a "happy" ending? Even to her? It might have been her goal, but that doesn't mean the poor woman isn't better the way she is. After all, Fire Keepers were not allowed to see the truth and basically believed a lie or an empty promise - judging from what the Fire Keeper says once you give her the eyes.

Considering that two of the endings lead to the fire finally being put out, thus making her new position as fire keeper meaningless, I think it's safe to say her ending is as bad as the rest.

There is another connection between Patches and Greirat, attacking Greirat will make Patches hostile towards the player. I don't know if this also happens to Greirat if the player kills Patches.

I thought the holes in Loretas bone would be caused from the dark spell "Gnaw" that the Angelists use, thus it makes more sense story wise that she was killed by a zealous Angelist for some reason. "Gnaw" after all, summons insects from the abyss, that penetrate and devour their target, their probably capable of boring into bone.

Loretta's bone sounds like it could be a flute. Several flutes made of human femurs and the like have been discovered the world over. Perhaps Loretta was a musician who inspired Greirat in his darkest hours.

maybe the bone Loretta had was a flute. the item description says several small holes. maybe the reason is that she was Greirats mother. and that she would play it when he was younger. so that's why he recognizes it.

Same here. Or a smoking pipe. Or an ustensil, maybe for traditional medecine. It's a femur bone, that's almost certain. I personally think Loretta's bone could be a flute of some sort. When I hear something like "bone with holes," I think of those tribal flutes/whistles. Maybe Loretta used the flute to call for help or warn the villagers when the evangelists came. It's also logical that she clutched this whistle as some sort of prayer to pray for help to arrive.

Patches seems to believe that he owes Greirat a great deal, or he has some natural connection to the man. Despite that however, Patches seems to try and avoid that Greirat would ever find out about him. He refuses to help Greirat without the Onion Armor, which obscures his face, though we know that he has a real interest in Greirat's safety. Now these leads me to believe one of two things; - *Patches owes Greirat for saving his life.* - *Patches is related to Greirat through blood.* I actually think that the second one is the most likely, why do you ask? Well ask yourself. *When has Patches or any of his counter-parts felt they owed anyone?*. Take Pate for example. Even if you save him, he will still try to trick you to death. No... I believe that Greirat and Patches are family. If we go by the assumption that *Loretta* is Greirat's mother, and we know that Patches has a thing for crossing worlds and being very old, then what if, and this is a big *what if*. Patches met Loretta at some point during the height of the Lothric Kingdom and had... Intercourse with her. Making her pregnant but fearing to be a parent he left. At some point he was locked up in the castle and saved by Greirat who ventured into the High Wall to retrieve a ring his mother lost. Patches recognize Greirat as his own child, and from there he gains a keen interest in protecting him. If you want another "proof". Look at Greirat's face and Patches. They both look alike. Both being either bald or close to it, and both having eyes that are closer to the middle of the face than the average person in Dark Souls. Their facial structure is alike, they are both thieves and Patches changes because of Greirat. Something he has never done before.
@XYZsolution

Perhaps Greirat is Patches distant cousin or something.
@simenamundsen3166
@simenamundsen3166 8 жыл бұрын
XYZsolution Really doubt that, as they look very much alike. For that to happen, they would need to be closely related. He could be his brother, but that wouldn't explain why Patches avoids ever coming in direct contact with Greirat and showing his face. Hence, him being his father is more believable.
@simenamundsen3166
@simenamundsen3166 8 жыл бұрын
***** Doesn't really make any sense why he would go so far to protect Greirat. Greirat is a "honorable" thief, but a thief none-the-less. If Patches developed respect for Greirat, then he would also have gained respect for the PC, which he never really does.
@simenamundsen3166
@simenamundsen3166 8 жыл бұрын
***** The issue with that, is that Greirat is the only person Patches refuses to show his face to. His face specifically. Take into account that the faces of Greirat and Patches are look very much alike, then there is a reason why Patches doesn't want to show his face, most likely because of the fact that they look alike. Hence, they are most likely closely related. Which could either be a brother or a father. Though I doubt that Greirat is the father if we go with that the "father" idea, as Greirat refers to Loretta as "old" and she is most likely his mother. Meaning Greirat isn't all that old himself, something we know that Patches is. If we go by the brother idea, then it honestly wouldn't make much sense for Patches to not want to show his face. He has no responsibility if he is the brother and thus no reason to hide from it. If it was the father however, he might not have wanted Greirat to find out about him. Which makes more sense, and explains the otherwise strange and out-of-place character he becomes when Greirat is in the picture. Patches cares only for himself, and no one else. That is a fact, well up until this point. However, if he wanted to be like Greirat then he wouldn't hide his face. He would save Greirat and others, while not hiding his face and thus become like Greirat. You can argue that "he is unable to do so because of urges", though that statement has already been proven wrong. As Patches can save Greirat himself, though only if he can hide his face behind the Onion Armor. He saves Greirat, and gives the credit to someone else. He specifically goes against his own urges and goes to great length to avoid becoming like Greirat.
@simenamundsen3166
@simenamundsen3166 8 жыл бұрын
***** You are really pulling at straws, aren't you? Greirat still has a face, a face created by the developers, meaning he was intended to look like that. And we can't form theories on it? What you are forming your theory based off is the lore of another game series apparently, and that is more valid because?.... You gave *one reason* why Patches might have respect for Greirat. That was that Patches actually wants to be like Greirat, a vigilant and savior of the weak. (Unless Greirat is just another petty thief as he claims to be.) However you stated that he might be unable to do so because of the "urges" he talks about all the time. I pointed out the fault in that idea. He goes against his selfish ways and "urges" when he goes and rescue Greirat. If he wanted to be honest and kind like Greirat, then he would do so as himself. However he covers up his face and gives the credit for the rescue to someone else. (Greirat that believes that our all favorite Onion Knight saved him regardless.) What does that say about Patches' character? Well for starters he isn't incapable of caring for others. He also doesn't want Greirat (or anyone) to find out what he did. What makes this such a huge difference in his already established arch type? Patches normally doesn't care for anyone but himself. This fact is true for Dark Souls 3 as well. As Patches still tries to kill and loot the PC and the Onion Knight. Yet he stops in his tracks and abort everything to save a random person and gives the "rewards" and "fame" to a person he tried to kill earlier? Patches? The guy who kills others just to increase his own wealth. Helped someone and did it not for a reward, but because he cared for someone? That are two things that contradict EVERYTHING about his character up until to this point. And for what reason? What you came with was; He did it because he wanted to be like Greirat, a honest and kind thief who helps out instead of killing for selfish reasons. ... Yeah... That ehm.. Doesn't add up. Greirat was a name known to many, but when the curse began a new, people died and the name wasn't as great as it once was. This means that even if Greirat isn't his real name, this is what people knew him as. A famous thief who no doubt had a good heart. If Patches wanted to be like Greirat then he would either; a) Make a persona for people to know him by. b) Just go as himself. But he gave the credit to someone else, because he had the armor handy, and had no wish to give it specifically to the honest Onion Knight. (I mean, I'll assume he would have used Anri's armor instead if he had stolen that instead.) Thus he didn't want to be like Greirat, he simply wanted to save Greirat without him (and anyone) knowing that he did so. He then continues to show concern for Greirat after that, and Greirat alone. So.. - Patches cares for Greirat and no one else. - Patches doesn't want to be like Greirat. - Patches and Greirat look alike. - They are both thieves of different moral. If the face part isn't good enough for you, then Greirat's career as a "thief" shouldn't be efficient proof enough that Patches and he are alike either. (Same strange logic as you used.) Though the point there is... Patches has some connection towards Greirat, a connection he doesn't want others to dig too much into and one that he doesn't want Greirat to know about. (As he doesn't even want to know that "Patches" is a person.) Thus they are likely to have a strong connection somehow, and a simply "I opened your cell" wouldn't cause Patches to go to such lengths to help. Hence, I came to the conclusion that they are either; - Father and son. - Brothers. - Patches had a crush on Greirat. The middle one is unlikely as it gives Patches no reason to NOT show his face as he has no responsible over Greirat. The last one is possible, though severely unlikely as there is nothing to support this and the two look almost identical. (Like someone who would be blood related would be.) Thus the first one is the most likely. - Also the part about the Gray Fox. The curse is placed there by Nocturnal after the original "Gray Fox" stole it. The Count of Anvil later removes said curse using the Elder Scrolls. He was a Thief who followed the codex of the Thieves Guild, like all its members do. Which is to protect the poor and steal from the richly unjust. The Count wasn't like that though, as he went to great length to hurt those that didn't only to remove the curse so he could gain back what he lost. Hence, he and Greirat are nothing alike. Thus no reference. (Not that is likely, as Dark souls isn't huge on direct references.)

Gray is often used to describe something that walks the threshold of good and evil, able to be both simultaneously. Rats are incredible survivalists in the animal kingdom despite being unspectacular and prey to everything else(figuratively speaking). I think that's how his name ought to be interpreted. He is a thief, stealing is bad, but he steals for good reasons, he walks the threshold of right and wrong. He stands up against powerful enemies in his endeavors despite being a lowly thief and yet he not only manages to do so, he thrives. In this context the name Greirat is well suited to him, his name speaks well the life he leads.

I always thought of the holes on loretta's bone as result of some torture that happened in the settlement since you fight some toturing dudes right before you get the thing. Not to mention that the corpse where you found it is hanging and tied to the ceiling.

Two additional thoughts about issues you raised in the video: 1) Greirat's name may also be an allusion to the classic Fritz Leiber character, the Gray Mouser. (Leiber's "Fafhrd and the Gray Mouser" stories were classic fantasy works which helped to, among other things, inspire the creation of D&D. TSR later licensed the Lankhmar setting from the books for some of their products, as well. The Mouser was a classic "thief/rogue" archetype.) Given how we know that Miyazaki loves to reference various other works... 2) Loretta's Bone may be a flute (see, eg., this article: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Paleolithic_flutes ); that would explain the purpose of the bored holes. In additional support of this idea, remember that the crow's "Pickle-pee! Pump-a-rum!" is a reference to the music of fifes (a fife being a member of the flute family) and drums, that the various objects the crow accepts echo this theme, and that Loretta's Bone is one of the items it takes.

It'd also explain why Greirat recognises it, if it's an instrument hand-carved by Loretta or perhaps even by Greirat for Loretta.

Two things i think are very interesting about Greirat: 1) Greirat (A Thief) is locked up in the High Wall, even though there are a lot of "thieves" and hollows (which i don't think would lock up people) around. That could indicate that he was locked up there for quite some time... 2) Greirat says something among the lines of "And you must be one of that unkindled ash, judging by the bell..." Could he be referring to the belltower in Firelink Shrine?

It could also be possible that Loretta's Bone used to be a flute that she used to play. Loretta clutched it like a treasure, it might have been her favourite instrument and you bringing it to Greirat is a sign to him that she is dead, as she might have never parted with it willingly when she was alive.

So here is what I like to think about Loretta and her bone and relation to Grierat. I think the bone is from a loved one she lost and Rat went to retrieve it for her... maybe her loved one was killed or burned and the bone was all that was left. She put holes in it to wear as a keepsake close to her heart. This also applies to the blue tearstone ring which is the tears from the goddess specifically when someone loses a loved one, much like Loretta. I get the feeling her and Rat were childhood friends.

I think the bored bone is someone that Loretta lost, a child perhaps, and the holes may be part of some ritual. Grierat then finds the Blue Tearstone ring as a gift for her, but gets locked up.

I like to think he wanted to give her the ring for extra protection. The undead settlement doesn't seem too friendly to hollows with Lloyd style hunts still going on even after the hunters hollowed themselves. The blue tearstone ring might have been the bit of extra protection she needed until Greirat got back.

I love dark souls 3 lore. Also patches refers to greyrat as old. Of course this means very little because he is undead but maybe a little bit of evidence towards him being related ar married to loretta? Also Grey rat has some kind of purpose to keep him from going hollow both in the dungeon and in firelink even when loretta's death is revealed. I think that patches enjoyed what greyrat represented. thief but one who did it with good purpose for a place where the unwanted undead lived peacefully.

-"It's not much to go by" The Blue tear ring was given to Greirat by his mother living in the undead settlement when it was discovered or at least made known he was undead, as that would be the reason for him being mourned. Or, this may possibly relate to the idea of the undead disposal and Geirats imprisonment at some point, hence losing a loved one, his mother might not have even known if he still "lived" or something. Best I could go by.

Greirat's name can also be seen as a subtle reference to Demon's Souls as there is a ring that fills a similar purpose as the Blue Tearstone Ring called the "Dull Rat Ring". As you said early in the video Grei can be translated to "simple" which some people also call dull a good example being "Dull-witted" which also goes hand in hand with the fact there is also a "Clever Rat Ring" in Demon's Souls. Also on the subject of Loretta's bone, Some people are saying it looks like a flute and the Trepanning theory is a really good one. But personally I think it looks more like a make-shift hollowed out dagger. And could possibly have been a bleeding tool, for ritualistic or even medicinal purposes. As the process of Bleeding a patient was quite popular in the approximate era Dark Souls 3 is set in.

Perhaps Patches and Greirat know each other from both being thieves of some repute. There is no honour amongst thieves, only reputation. It could even be that Greirat, someone who steals for the betterment of others, is something Patches would like to be, but lacks the courage to do so himself. We can see this when he won't save Greirat without the suit of heavy armour.

One thing I think is worth pointing out is the in-game effect of the Blue Tearstone Ring that Loretta was supposed to get. It grants strength towards the end of your life. Loretta was an old woman in a dangerous settlement. I think Greirat wanted her to have this to give her strength towards the end of her own life? Dunno how relevant or obvious this is but I just thought it was a cool little thing to point out.

5:30 I think Loretta being a slave that Greirat cared for makes more sense then her doing it to let out the undead curse and even if it was why the bone and not the skin? The holes in her bone can be where they put chains in her legs or arms to keep her restrained and besides there are many slaves in the undead settlement just read the description for the headpeice that Greirat wears and it says that it was "used to cover the heads of lesser folk who were set to work as slaves throughout Lothric and also occasionally used to shame and humiliate criminals" another theory I got from this comment section that might be true is that Loretta and Greirat we're fugitives or something and she was caught and attacked by an evangelist as their mace's have spikes which might have caused the holes in her bone and the blue tearstone ring protects one in their last moments maybe she was dying or being killed and Greirat was in the prison in the wall so he wanted to give her something that would protect her as she was dying

The theory of the ring goes that, if Loretta was slowly dying/degenerating, and blue tearstones increase defense when one's health is low, that Greirat may have thought it as a means of making her passing more comfortable, that she wouldn't die in so much pain. Its possible that, outside of gameplay, that is the purpose the ring serves for non-undead.

I'd say Loretta was someone who helped greirat in a time of need like he got an injury and she nursed him back to health because he does say something about loose ends or ties or something if I remember correctly well anyways he was giving her the blue tearstone ring maybe to prolong her life cause maybe she had an injury or some disease that effected her bones in some way and the ring increases defence when your health is low so it could have reduced the bone from eroding. she might have had to remove her leg because it got so bad that she had to and she just decided to hold on to it for some reason. ohyeah and he could have grown an attachment or bond to her because its just in greirat nature or maybe she was almost a motherly figure to him maybe. I don't know it's just what I think

Great Video. Greirat is actually one of my favorite npc's in DS3. Something about his simple sincerity. I like your theory, one thing I wanted to add that I have speculated about Loretta's bone is that it is a bone made into a flute, looking at the picture, we can only see to holes, but there could be others on the side we cannot see. Ocarina's commonly only have 4 holes, and do tin whistles. I don't see this as being something that would be out of place especially for an undead, living in a settlement of undead. Just a thought.

I was wandering through the canal after defeating the Sulyvahns Beast that gave me some trouble, and i found the sewer, and i finally vanquished the sewer centipedes, and i saw an item orb thingy... Greirat. I cried for what felt like an eternity. On a side note: he says he wants to die like a hero, but if he dies and you find him, look at the positions he is in. hes face down in the sewer water, curled up in the fetal position on some rooftop no one will ever venture to. Not even a weapon drawn, no signs of a fight. Nothing. Just him accepting his inevitable death.

After playing through his storyline a couple times, I think Patches was initially locked in the cell we find Greirat in. Considering it's Patches, I think he then betrayed Greirat and tricked him, and locked him up in that very cell until we find him. Considering this, I don't think Patches "cares" for Greirat, as much as he feels guilty for betraying him.

I think Loretta's bone is a poor man's homeward bone or even acting as a purge stone. by boring holes in the bone I think she was trying to escape her fate of being undead, torn apart by villagers and threatened by Fat Girls to be hugged never-ending. one day, she got her wish, she died, and stayed dead. Meanwhile Grierat was in shock, she left without him, after all this time he wanted to escape with her, but she was already dead.

Wait a sec, think of those skeletons you fight in the sewer area in the Undead Settlement (after using the key), they all clearly had trees and wood-like limbs growing *inside* their skeletons. Maybe the bores had something to do with inspecting or removing it, or were caused by it.

For me the ring and the bone point to 2 ideas either Loretta is greirats sister or his wife and patches is his brother in law. This can explain how patches only helps him if wearing the armour as he may think that Greirat won't trust him but still cares about him odd as it is

so the whole blue tearstone rings when one is given to someone who is believed to be closing in on death think of it as a good luck charm he wanted to give it to her knowing she would die soon either from sickness or rumours of murder (a martyr of the poor hears quite alot) so when he says heavens she was already dead she didn't have the ring for good luck she may have lived is his thoughts.

I have another theory for the bone: the body is inside that bag, right? That means we didn't actually see the body. So the bone could be her own's. And there is one thing in the undead settlement that could (and would) have boared those holes: the evangelist's mace have spikes in it! Think of it, it does make sense! That would explain even why she was killed and kept in that bag. Btw, sorry for my English, it's not my first lenguage.

But why would they rip the damaged bone out of her body just to give it to her corpse? A way to deal with undead or a punishment?
@SilverMont
@SilverMont 8 жыл бұрын
They definitely kept it vague, but the way I see it is, you knock the body down and then the bone (which was being held or otherwise adorned the body as an accessory) is knocked loose and we pick it up. Could be it actually fell out of the body as well though - we just have to consider that Greirat instantly recognises it as Loretta's, which would imply it's some tool that meant a lot to her, to me at least.

The bone is definitely a humerus and, if we ignore the possibility of it being a flute, the hole is closer to the upper part of the arm proximal to the armpit essentially. It doesn't make sense why there would be a hole there....

Silver Mont it makes it so that that channels videos show up on your inbox 100% of the time, otherwise googles algorithm will sometimes cause it to not show up if you dont watch it enough, which is an issue with a channel like yours that doesn't have constant daily uploads, which the algorithm reads as me not being interested anymore, so youtube put this bell option on every youtubers page that overrides that algorithm and makes sure all the videos show up in your inbox
@SilverMont

And Greirat thought about protecting her I don't know from what but I speculate that he thought it would save her from old age??

Actually, if you want a hint about the inspiration for Greirat's name, I'd point the finger at Fritz Leiber's (excellent) Lankhmar novel series. The series is one in which two thieves, Fafhrd (a northern barbarian strong fellow) and the Gray Mouser (a savvy, urban orphan), have fantastic adventures in thievery and high fantasy. They're great reads and I'd honestly say whoever sought for a name for Greirat is paying homage to the Gray Mouser. A great video, Alex.

Silver Mont Well, to be honest, the two characters don't really have a whole lot in common than maybe their names, professions and demeanors. I don't remember Gray Mouser's various women's names, but I don't think any were a Loretta. However, if you see any tall, muscular northman type guys with way too many consonants in their name, just maybe you've found a Fafhrd analog. Heh.

is it possible that Lorettas bone was the bone of someone that she loved that had died, and greirat had stolen it and was put into prison for it, and over the years he descovered what the ring ment to loretta and started to regret what he did and only wanted to return the ring, only to discover she was dead, and that is what made him want to die a heros death

I have never heard of anybody ever drilling through a bone for the purpose of avoiding something else, which makes perfect sense, considering that soft tissue is malleable and can generally be clipped, clamped, or otherwise held in a safe position. It's primarily done to make room for a screw or pin when it IS done. Trepanation is still practiced today, though it's usually referred to as a craniotomy. It's kind of the only way to relieve pressure on the brain from a hematoma. The hole you make with a craniotomy is generally larger and you actually put the bone back as soon as you can (as opposed to old-school trepanation, where you just have a hole for the rest of your life), but if push comes to shove and you're in the wrong situation...well, you have to work with the tools you've got. You might want to avoid extemporizing on the subject of medical procedures.
@SilverMont
@SilverMont 6 жыл бұрын
That's interesting information, but this is also a game wherein souls have a tangible presence and can be traded like pokemon cards. There's any number of reasons for a bone to have holes into it that you could speculate on, in that setting. Especially given where this object is found. If people thought drilling a hole in their skull might be a move towards spiritual enlightenment, a bunch of clueless undead might think drilling holes in their bones would allow them to suck up more souls like a vacuum cleaner. Point is, we don't know and supposition can be entertaining.
@SilverMont
@SilverMont 6 жыл бұрын
As for the specific "drilling into bone to avoid things" - I didn't word that very well, but I was referring to "Intraosseous insertion" but no, I'm not a doctor and my medical knowledge is very limited. But at the same time it was an extremely minor point in a video, so I didn't spend overly long researching it. The point is, "people can drill into bones for medical purposes, religious/spiritual purposes, or maybe just to make some crazy ass bone flute, we don't know because they are crazy zombies."
