Dark Souls Lore - Havel the Rock [60fps]
Merry Christmas / Happy holidays, everyone!
How many times have I been asked to do a lore video on Havel? Quite a lot! More than any other character, that's for certain. So, here you go! I'm not really sure if I can bring anything new to the table when it comes to our Bishop, but how can I say no to you beautiful people.
You can support the artist @ her redbubble account: www.redbubble.c...
Where you can get the thumbnail pic (and all my other thumbnail art!) on shirts, stickers, phone cases and all sorts of goodness!

There's plenty of confusing questions in Dark Souls. How does the Ancient Dragon expect anyone to make it down to Ash Lake to join his covenant if its one and only entrance is hidden behind an illusory wall? Why would a blacksmith set up shop in a cramped corridor down in a network of catacombs? Why does Andre set up shop where he does when right outside and down the stairs is a Titanite Demon? That has to drive away customers. If the universes and times/settings of all the Souls games are different... how does Patches manage to be in every game? In fact, just why IS he a spider in Bloodborne? Why are Ultra Greatswords labeled as 'Ultra' in DS1 when the Zweihander is in fact bigger than most of the Ultra Greatswords? Is Sir Alonne always alone? Was the Fume Knight buried under the ashes? Is the Burnt Ivory King secretly Sauron? Why would archers hang out on narrow ledges all day if Anor Londo is usually empty and quiet?

I don't really think the Havel in Undead Burg is The Havel since he had Havel's Ring and from what I read he made these rings so that his soldiers could lift the armour, but Havel himself was strong enough to lift the armour without the ring. This is just my speculation.

The item description referring to the dragon tooth and shield found in Anor Londo imply that they are completely unique to Havel alone. Therefore it is possible that his followers weild imitation weapons, visibly similar but less powerful than the one we actually find.

Seath definitely had some influence on Havel being locked away. The Moonlight Butterfly in Darkroot Garden guards the key. This definitely indicates that either he persuaded Gwyn that Havel was trouble or at least, he was given the power to do it himself

The Havel is a river in Germany. Saxony also is in Germany. Saxony comes from the latin word Saxum, which translates to Rock. The Saxons (The rocks if you will) were a barbaric tribe who later formed part of what would become the english population. So if Lordran is some sort of representation of England ,then maybe Havel could be the name of a Land older then Lordran. Just a thought i was playing with ,but probably nonsense x)

I have a bit of speculation as to how Hagel died (or became undead), since I don't think it was really mentioned. This sort of theory comes from the stats of Havel's set. I think what happened was Havel went to kill Seath and couldn't because of the immortality crystal. He could obviously survive the encounter and escape because of the high curse and magic resistance on his armor. Havel probably sought out how to beat Seath by trying to find the dragon in Ash Lake. One thing Havel's armor lacks is poison resists, which means that he probably died of Blighttown's swamp before being able to make it to the dragon, which would explain why his miracle is found down there.

My head cannon is that Seath actually planted the occult club, think about it, Havel really has no reason to rebel against the "gods" themselves, just Seath, so maybe Seath found out, and in his usual backstabbing way, he opted to ruin Havel's name with a sneaky trick.
@Nathrezim0
@Nathrezim0 9 жыл бұрын
I don't think so. Seath had no reason to take out the gods, especially after they left Anor Londo. He wanted to gain immortality. Killing your most powerful allies doesn't help you at all EDIT: Ok, I misunderstood your point. You weren't saying Seath was trying to kill the gods. You are right.
@chriswolfe351
@chriswolfe351 9 жыл бұрын
I think there is a problem with that notion though. If they put Havel in the tower because they found the occult club among his stuff, then why is it still there? I don't think they ever found his secret stash, I think he probably got locked away because he began making his opinions known a little too loudly. That's pure speculation though.

Huh, funny you didn't mention my trip down to Ash Lake. The Chosen Undead may find my Great Magic Barrier down there, so one can assume I was there to visit a dragon. Perhaps I knew the only way to kill the gods was with the only thing they feared...the power of the dragons. Alright, role play is done, but in all seriousness, I don't think the soldier in the Burg is Havel, but one of his soldiers. The ring you get from him says it's worn by his soldiers. If it was unique to Havel, then why would it say there were copies? If the Dragon Tooth and greatshield are for Havel alone, why is the soldier in the burg using them if we can find copies in Havel's secret room in Anor Londo? It's a bit of a stretch, but I think that Havel made the journey to Ash Lake to seek the power of the Dragons the gods feared. I sometimes speculate that the dragon down below could possibly be Havel himself, for the goal of the Dragon Covenant is to become dragons, yes? I understand this is wild speculation, but I think it's very possible.
@SilverMont
@SilverMont 9 жыл бұрын
Bishop Havel Yeah, I couldn't think of anything too interesting concerning GMB in Ash Lake. I generally assumed it was just the corpse of one of his warriors, either back from when they fought the dragons, or from a more recent time when one went down to see what was up (...hmm) But yeah, there are good arguments for the Burg-Havel being THE Havel and good arguments for it being just a soldier. I'm inclined to think it is him, if just because of the phrasing "hero" and how it seems to imply it's someone important. But then, that whole item description is rather bizarre to begin with.
@BishopHavel
@BishopHavel 9 жыл бұрын
Silver Mont Well, seeing how Havel and his men were working to protect Lordran from the likes of the dragons and the demons from Izaleth (assumedly), perhaps all of the soldiers in stone armor were seen as heroes and friends of the gods. Just a thought. (Loved your video by the way)

What if the "dear friend" was sarcastic, and it were Seath himself who imprisoned him, or at least assisted said dear friend in the matter? Imagine artorias being the right size to one hand that sword. Hed have to be as big as ornstein gets adter killing smough. Got me thinking what id those giants from ds2 are remnants of gwyns race? All gone mindless hollow. Idk prolly not but still artorias was probably a boss at full power. I heard someone say theres no way we could defeat artoeias if he was full power cuz supposedly hes really left handed and would own us id he didnt use the right. I argue that Manus killed Artorias and i killed Manus so that makes me better than Artorias at full power. Unless he lost the fight before reachinf Manus but I doubt that.

@ImpaledLad 249 i thought the dragon slayer armor from dark souls 3 was Havel's armor. it has a cross-spear style great axe that looks VERY similar to the cross guard on Ornstein's spear. all the stone armor were just what his soldiers wore, I think because its what the arch-dragons were made of so they wanted to have the same sort of protections that the arch-dragons had naturally. The truth. Havel never trusted in Magic,nor seath. Maybe he knew about the traitor or maybe it was just the "Im one with the gods,bishop Thingy". So he decided to kill seath. Gwyn who still worked together with seath arrested Havel for this because Gwyn thought Havel got mad. So havel decided that Gwyn could not be a real "god" because a true god would never do such kinda things. So havel made the club,to kill Every "false" god and *seath,of course.*

It could also very well be that Havel planned on killing Seath, Seath found out about it and locked him in the tower. It would explain the crystal golems outside (guardians or at least a way to alert Seath should Havel be freed or escape), and Seath DOES have a penchant for locking people up. Then it would simply be that the key's description is sarcastic in it's use of "dear friend" AND "for his own good, of course."

I thonk Havel's rebellion was instigated by Seath poking Gwynevere, possibly against her will. Have would feel honorbound to avenge the princess, his friend's daughter, even if Gwyn felt no such compunctions himself. Not to mention the pisacas and other awful experiments perpetrated by the white dragon. So, Havel, possibly with the aid of Velka and/or Priscilla, gathers occult weapons and prepares his rebellion. Somehow, though, Gwyn finds out about the plot. Before he can be arrested, however, Havel has one of his own troops take his place, wielding the dragon tooth so there would be no doubt it was him. After ensuring his decoy worked, Havel tried to return to Anor Londo via Sens fortress, only to be killed since he lacked his arms and armor. Thus, we find the soul of a hero in the fortress. The plot is ended, Havel dead, Velka banished and Priscilla imprisoned in Ariamis. Havel's troops are dispersed to become silver knights, watching over the very people they would have destroyed. Another little theory. Perhaps the maiden in the cell at Firelink shrine used to be one of Gwynevere's handmaidens? She might have testified against Seath after he diddled the Sun Princess. Gwyn, not wanting to be disgraced by admitting such a thing happened, would have ordered her tongue cut out and her imprisoned. Hmm? HMMMMMMMM?

I'm only on my first DS playthrough, so I may be saying something stupid, if so, correct me. I think that the three different kind of "magic" in the DS world are totally different between them: - Faith-based Miracles are god-given powers to be used in their defence and were born through the Lords souls; some examples could be your Great Lightining Spears from Gwin or my Sword Dance from Nito. Being a Bishop (or rather, presuming he was an actual bishop), Havel link to the miracles would be strong and the fact that his shield is Imbued with one is a strong proof of that; - Fire-based Pyromancies are totally different; the currency used to "fuel" this magic consists of the Souls that you "feed" to the flame. I'd dare to say that they are the magic closest to the "natural" order of the world, with the Flames being a sort of derivation from the Dragons; I'd say this idea of mine is strenghtened by the existance of Poison Pyromancies and Poison dragons; the fact that mostly the Pyromancy was born in the great swamp, where the link with nature/natural order is "stronger" is another hint I'm willing to take. Chaos Pyromancies are a "deviant" form of this magic, born from the abuse caused by the WItch of Izalith; this particular type of pyromancy takes a bigger toll on the user, requiring him/her to burden himself/herself more heavily (i.e. taking two attunement slots per spell); being a magic that resembles/derives from the dragons is something that Havel would not approve and my guess is that neither does the Way of White: when you meet Laurentius at the Firelink Shrine for the first time, he asks if you maybe are someone who despise magic and I always linked this (probably without a real reason) to the near Thorolund; - Intelligence-based Sorceries are the one I admit to know the least about; my wild guess would be that it could be a totally human magic; another idea is that the deviant nature of Seath not only gave him a scaleless skin, but also deprived him from his rightful fire power, replaced with the magic one.
@erigor11
@erigor11 8 жыл бұрын
As you can get to know from Logan and the other magician (I don't remember his name), the Vinheim sorceries are related to knowledge and study. Seath was seeking knowledge as he was determined to achieve the secret of inmortality and, of course, he then learnt a lot about sorcery. From where? Who the fuck knows, this is dark souls, but surely not from humans.

Just a thought, but I think the key implies that Havel did have a plan to kill Gywn. Pronouns represent the last proper noun. So the word his means whatever the last name was. While in this case there really are no proper nouns I think we can all agree that "hero turned hollow" and "a dear friend" are as close as we get. The word his is referring to the dear friend. Gywn. I am also going to say that this could be completely wrong, but it seems like nothing in dark souls is done without a reason. So I'm guessing that the grammar is intentional.

There's one reason for why the Havel the Rock we encounter in the Undead Burg is the true Havel: there are supposed to be very few who are strong enough to wear a dragon's tooth as a weapon. While it could be that someone was that strong, I feel it is unlikely someone other than Havel himself would wear the tooth, Havel's Ring, and his armour.

+Calle Nilsson Oh, and I have a very unpolished theory: could it be that Gwyn's Fantastic Four could've been a Fantastic Five, or at least something close to it? Gwyn apparently held Havel pretty high, perhaps high enough to give him a soul in the same way he did with Ornstein and co. Furthermore, Havel has a unique ring, and even if its isnt referred to as an animal's ring, like e.g Ornstein's Leo Ring, its a powerful artifact, and those rings were Ornstein and co's trademark. Just pure speculation though.

On top of that they don't know if it was a person or an army or a country so when it is being remembered it's like "hey ever heard of that Havel? me either"Also you said the lords can't hollow only humans are hollows... One interesting topic regarding Mirrah and that holy spring is the way the east in Dks differs so much to the one we are shown in Dks 2, this version features many cultural elements related to the west such as armor designs and weaponry (Chainmails instead of samurai like armour, greatswords and longsword instead of katanas etc). Late to the party but I love Dark Souls and you did a great job with this. My opinion was always that Havel knew about what Seath was up to, and by that I mean creating Priscilla. He knew Seath had gone mad and was ready to take him out. However, when he told Gywn his (Gywn's) reaction was more to protect the name of his family. He made it his goal to contain Havel and use Seath as a potential weapon as he believed he was a more valuable ally than the Rock. I could be wrong but I do think that that is Havel at the bottom of the tower. We find his armor in the prison (of sorts) where he was kept before being killed. Remember that you must be killed to become a hollow. The occult club was used to kill him and then left behind before moving the body knowing that it would rise again.

Perhaps Havel was a demi god and his hatred for death got him locked away in the room in anor londo where gwyn sent an assassin to kill Havel with the occult club and they stripped him of his armour and weapons and put it in the chests along with the murder weapon!?!?!?
@vasantk6663
@vasantk6663 9 жыл бұрын
I think Havel was actually trying to kill Gwyndolin. He had an occult club to kill a deity, but he failed (because Gwyndolin is still alive). His intention was to kill him because Gwyndolin used sorcery, and it's likely Seath got close to him. Also, Gwyn, whom Havel is a loyal supporter of, didn't like Gwyndolin, so Havel had extra incentive to "honor kill" Gwyndolin. Gwyndolin must have spawned silver knight illusions to guard himself as well as make an illusionary wall that could only be opened by wearing the Darkmoon Seance Ring or killing Gwynevere, both of which Havel did not like. So he got caught by Gwyndolin, and that's the reason his armor (and dangerous weapon) are locked up in Anor Londo. First contribution to a lore! :D (even if it is wrong)

Silver Mont Yeah, just like Petrus, Havel may be a bit evil too. Though, I wonder what the significance of the Ring of the First Sunborn is doing in Gwyndolin's chamber. I'm trying to figure out what all the unique/strange items are doing there and what lore and backstory they have. EDIT: I think it's safe to assume the mimics are a part of Gwyndloin's illusions because the 2 others at the top hold the item a man most desires: money. And we all know Gwyndolin hated the humans (Source: TerraMantis) and banished them (the reason Gwynevere leaves). So the mimic in the basement held Havel's (the human) greatest weapon. Also, since Havel is human, they could have had a long lasting feud unknown to the Chosen Undead.

I rather feel this added line is like Gwyn telling you this story and he adds this himself to say "... for his own good, of course, Its not that I´m an asshole or something ... " to justify himself. not that anybody is believed to swallow this, but it might well have been the official version that Gwyn would have told others or maybe he did tell others about that incident and yeah, thats because he said it that way. As to why Havel hated Seath: there are plenty of reasons, but one link to that matter and his speculated rebellion against the gods might be that in the human world the biggest shit was made happen by the sorcerers. The sorcerers of Oolacile awoke Manus and drove his humanity wild, leading to the destruction of that human society. the sorcerers of new londo flooded the city and killed countless humans, for a good reason of course, but still. also Oolaciles sorcerers, the 4 kings and Seath all had a want for power, that drove them into doing terrible things, while the Gods and their followers already possessed seemingly all power and only wanted to preserve it. its possible that Gwyn simply turned a blind eye to Seaths twisted experiments and also orderered the flooding of new londo and Havel found out, so he lost respect for Gwyn and decided to overthrow him, therefor the occult rebellion. I also think the cause of Havels hatred for Seath isnt that simple, its not like Havel had a crush on Gwynivere and so had Seath and that kinda stuff ... nah could be possible, but sounds too idiotic to me. Oh and regarding the "Havel" in the watchtower: I also think it is Havel. the shield and dragontooth should be unique to him and yes he drops the ring and havel himself probably would have not needed this ring and he didnt use it as far as we know, but then again its still a game, and if he would drop his weapon or something, that would be kinda odd gameplay wise. ha also doesnt drop anything besides the ring, so maybe he didnt actually wear the ring but merely had it with him. its also the only way the player would know who the heck that guy is, other than the jerk, that smashed his face like 10 times already. how come his armour is in anor londo then? well ... his body disappears when we kill him the watchtower, and also time in lordran is convoluted ... haha everythings possible, but the heck I simply believe it is Havel. I also suspected he might have not been hollow. maybe he was simply locked away without being hollow or without being undead anyways. then again, he´s human so he would´ve not survived this long without being undead I guess. Another theory is that maybe the dear friend wasnt Gwyn. Maybe Gwyn was already on fire by the time Havel plotted his rebellion, maybe this rebellion was meant to hit Gwyndolin, although I dont believe this myself, only a quick thought. And maybe we get it all wrong and Havel had nothing to do with the occult rebellion and he rather is the one locked one of his warriors away himself, so Havel himself is the "dear friend", for some reason nobody could ever know, and that makes this thought kinda useless, and interesting, but nah skip it. In short: Just like with Solaire, despite everything else I chose to believe Solaire to be the lost first born son of Gwyn and thats it. I believe Havel to be the one in the tower and that he plotted a rebellion against Gwyn for some reason, and so was locked away by Gwyn. He probably was the first undead ever to be locked away somewhere, because if the asylum already existed then, I think they could as wel have locked him there, just to be safe. When you dont know nothing for sure, you have to choose your own story to believe - although being open for speculation is always a good thing^^

Good video. Two points I want to bring up: 1) How can Lords hollow if they have massive amount of souls? Isn't it that the more souls you have, the less likely you are to hollow? and 2) Ancient Soldier Varg may be one of the soldiers of the Rock himself. But this would mean that his weapon is not unique to Havel.
@SilverMont
@SilverMont 9 жыл бұрын
Rotizm1 Hollowing (from a gameplay perspective, and presumably lore) is running out of humanity. In Demon's Souls, people achieve a similar "state" despite there being no humanity to begin with (just "souls") but even then, Gwyn is "hollow" and yet his soul contains great power. So maybe it's not having none, but losing enough. For example, say Gwyn had 10,000,000 "souls" and then he lost all but 100,000, he would still have a lot, but having lost so many could've reduced him to the state we find him in. If that makes sense? Like, if you had $100 to your name and then you woke up to find you had been left with $10, it would suck. If you had $100,000,000 to your name and woke up to find you had been left with $100, it would be a similar experience, right?

You should read it with "w" and long "l", you don't have to thank, King Havel is also the name of a river in the Germany and the name of a Czech politician, and comes from the words Abel/hebel which means son / vapor, in Japanese, "Haberu" means "await".

I like to think that Havel was just a special knight then an exacted army in a PVE point of view and not PVP because of players whereing his armor. And I think that the Occult Club was mainly for rebels such as Gywn,Ornstien, etc etc

I was surprised that you did not talk about Havel's ring. The description talks about how only soldiers of Havel wore the ring to express faith in Havel and to carry a heavier load. Havel would not need to wear such a ring. Yet the ring is dropped by the being in the tower. That's why I think it is a solider in the tower.
@SilverMont
@SilverMont 9 жыл бұрын
It doesn't explicitly say that, though. It mentions that Havel's soldiers wore the wrong, but nothing about the man himself, specifically. "The ring was named after Havel the Rock" yada yada. Now, whilst it could be taken and construed as implying that Havel DIDN'T wear the ring, I don't think it's conclusive evidence, either way.

Just a suggestion for the next lore video, Darkdiver Grandahl, little is really known about him (or I dont know much about him) and he seems to be a very interesting character

I know that you have been making a remastered series and but most of the video I that I am commenting on is good but could it not have been Gwyn but the nameless king that locked him away before he left and he was going to betray Gwyn for exiling his son due to siding with the dragons. he could somehow escape to come across arch dragon peak and morn a dragon he could call a firend?

10:40 the reason that line wasn't included in the Japanese version is because in Japanese there is a specific form of sentence you use when you;'re talking about something you did for someone else's good. Because of this, that line would be redundant. That line is necessary in the English version because we don't have a sentence style like that.

Slappy Bigalow I figured that was just an "easter egg" like with Ricard. But who knows? Maybe "shadows of the past" are present in the Abyss, for some reason.

Havel wandered around Lordran and eventually hollowed out in Darkroot Basin. Seath sent his Golems down there to finish him off. Havel smashed several of them so a Channellor tricked Havel into following him into the tower and locked him in. Then the Channeller ran up the stairs and locked the other door. Havel being a mindless hollow just stood there ever since. The Golems were left there to watch over him but they're stupid so they just began wandering around the basin, thus explaining their presence there. The Channeller made his way to the parish and he's the dick that buffs those 20 hollows before the gargoyle fight. Somewhere along the line Seath sent the Moonlight Butterfly to snag the key from him.
