As Prince William and Kate celebrate their 10th Wedding Anniversary. I look back at his Grooms Cake, why he chose the Queen's favorite afternoon tea cake and the history of the recipe.
The Queen has two chocolate cakes "in her life" The ganache chocolate sponge (birthday cake) that I made a video of earlier and this one, her favorite... the chocolate biscuit cake. Below is the authentic recipe, easy to make, no bake and delicious!

Here's the recipe..
Chocolate Biscuit Cake
4 ounces dark chocolate.(for the cake)
4 ounces granulated sugar.
4 ounces unsalted butter. (softened)
8 ounces Rich tea biscuits.
½ teaspoon butter for greasing.
8 ounces dark chocolate (for coating) 1 ounce chocolate (for decoration)
Lightly grease a 6 inch by 2 ½ inch cake ring and place on a tray on a sheet of parchment paper. Break each of the biscuits into almond size pieces by hand and set aside. Cream the butter and sugar in a bowl until the mixture starts to lighten. Melt the 4 ounces of chocolate and add to the butter mixture whilst constantly stirring. Fold in the biscuit pieces until they are all coated with the chocolate mixture. Spoon the mixture into the prepared cake ring. Try to fill all of the gaps on the bottom of the ring because this will be the top when it is un-molded. Chill the cake in the refrigerator for at least three hours. Remove the cake from the refrigerator and let it stand while you melt the 8 ounces of chocolate. Slide the ring off the cake and turn it upside down onto a cake wire. Pour the melted chocolate over the cake and smooth the top and sides using a palette knife. Allow the chocolate to set at room temperature. Carefully run a knife around the bottom of the cake where the chocolate has stuck it to the cake wire and lift it onto a tea plate. Melt the remaining 1 ounce of chocolate and use to decorate the top of the cake. Makes 1 6 inch round cake - 8 portions.

@@lattenoisette You'd be how surprised that happens. Tempura isn't Japanese, it's Portuguese and the Japanese got curry from British and Portuguese traders via India. Tons of suppsoedly Asian or Chinese foods like crab rangoon, egg rolls, and fortune cookies are all American as are many forms of supposedly Italian pizzas and pastas as well as Mexican foods like fajitas, crunchy tacos, and nachos. Mexican red rice, part of their tamales (the lard and meats), and their refried beans are Spanish. Ketchup is basically a westernized form of a Chinese sauce. Fried chicken was brought to the American south by Scottish miners and Apple Pie is actually English. French Croissants were brought over from Austria along with many other famous "French" pastries.

This dessert has been in many Greek families for decades. I’ve been eating it for 50 years. The only difference is that instead of setting it in a cake pan it’s free-form rolled into a log. In my family we called it “salami” because when you slice it the tea biscuit pieces resemble the fat in a salami. My mon uses sweetened condensed milk instead of sugar. She’s 82 and still makes it.

My BFF made this when Prince William married Kate (and in case you’re wondering it is best with Rich Tea biscuits). She ate a piece, then brought the rest over to ours. My household were away for the weekend, and I ended up eating the whole thing. Seriously, it was THAT good. Sadly it is also sooo rich that I ended up doubled over in pain and had to have my gallbladder out. In sum: Yes, make it, and No, don’t eat it all yourself.

My sister and I made their wedding an event-even all the way in Dallas. She found two mini chocolate biscuit cakes from a grocery in Fort Worth that were made specifically for the event. I made several different tea sandwiches (that was so fun) and we had every form of Pimm’s cocktail possible. I set up an air mattress in the living room and we stayed up all night and into the day enjoying the TV coverage. My son was eighteen months old at the time, so he woke up not long before the actual wedding started, but we still had an amazing time. 😂 Such great memories.

This brought me childhood memories. My mom used to make this (or at least very similar) when i was kindergarten/school age in the mid 80s-90s. (Growing up in Germany, so this seems to be an international cake) She had the recipe from her maternal grandmother and would make it in all sorts of shapes for me. I remember for my 5th birthday she made it in 3 different animal shapes, a snake, a monkey and an elephant. We once did one in the shape of a man and sent it to my sister via post/ parcel, because she jokingly said she wanted a man for her 23rd birthday. Though i suspect she didn't mean one made from chocolate and biscuits.

There is a similar cake from Malaysia that is my absolute favourite! It's called Batik Cake and is a very easy no bake cake. 2 cups of Milo (hot chocolate mix) 3/4 can of condensed milk 250g butter Vanilla 1 packet of Marie biscuits (i guess digestives or other tea biscuits work as well) Melt the butter, add the condensed milk, vanilla and Milo and turn off the flame (this is important so the biscuits don't turn soggy). Break the biscuits like he did in the video or just in 4 is fine too and mix them into the chocolate mixture. Place in a cake tin or deep dish container and press down. Set in the fridge. It's always a hit at gatherings and parties!

@Lya Qistina Sorry I got off topic a bit, sure your recipe is cool. Have you ever been to/lived in Australia? If you haven’t you should come you’ll love it. Just a quick tip while I’m at it... dodge Batmainia (aka Melbourne), bananavile (aka Queensland) and drongotown (aka Western Australia). Okay, I can make it more simple, just stick to NSW (New South Wales) and the ACT (Australian Capital Territory) and if you have time NT (Northern Territory), SA (South Australia) and Cairns/Townsville (located in Bananavile🙄) they are pretty good too.

@Lya Qistina As a proud Australian🇦🇺, I am greatly offended by the suggestion that Milo is Malaysian. Yea sure our government LOVES selling and shipping our assets off to foreign nations (DO NOT GET ME STARTED🙄) but Milo is still made here in Smithtown NSW 😅(really I can’t live without it so I’m glad it’s made here😜). The recipe for Milo hasn’t changed since Thomas Mayne invented it in 1934 so you can’t claim a modified version👍🏻. It is owned by Nestle Australia which is ironically foreign-owned (by Switzerland)😱. Sure we are happy for other nations to use it in their recipes but please give credit where credit is due😆. You can not (or at least should not) steal someone else's invention and call it your own🧐. Sorry to anyone who listened to my little rant (actually no I’m not🤣)

Few questions for an upcoming Q+A 1. Who was the easiest member of the Royal Family to cook for? 2. How often did the members of the Royal Family all eat together? Did they sit down to a family meal each day like we do or was it rare for them to eat together? 3. When they did eat together, did you prepare different dishes for each of them, or were they all served the same menu? 4. Does the Queen know how to cook and, if so, did she ever do so while you were working there?

Mum always made this cake with Nice biscuits, only we called it Death by Chocolate (from an Agatha Christie book). This was fifty plus years ago and the recipe came originally from the New Zealand Woman's Weekly though I can't remember what they called it. It was made in a loaf tin and then thinly sliced like bread. Great for tea at the weekend or for a special pudding in summer during the week. I don't remember there being that much butter in it but dad hated butter icing (frosting in the USA) which is really what this is so she probably adapted the chocolate mix so it wasn't as sickly.

Everyone puts different things in it, I add nuts, raisins and glacé cherries to mine, you can only have a little, it’s so rich. Some make it with condensed milk, which is also very rich. @@saintdominicofnz Darren is a self confessed “big chap”. Me describing him as having a generous stature is endearing where I come from and certainly not an insult. And that the royal families like the there a reason they're royals. And it amazing they get their vegetables from their backyard and try not to waste as much as they could and especially the queen. It amazing I knew she was awesome but she like next level by just eating anything and doesn't mind if it not luxurious ❤💯

I am from Greece. We have our own versions of this cake. We call it "mosaic" or "kormos" (=trunk). Commonly it will include a shot of cognac in the chocolate mix. Sometimes instead of chocolate, we add cocoa powder in the butter. We may also add almond flakes, hazel nuts or raisins. But we never shape as a round cake. Instead we shape it as a loaf or as a "salami". Finally we don't keep it in room temperature. Instead we freeze it in the freezer. Serously the freezer functions as a pleasure multiplier to this desert!
