@Gbenga Alabi , correct. It's called etiquette. I was born and raised in West Africa and have been living in the UK for over a decade. A woman does NOT apply makeup at the dinner table. It would throw our men off. Hi to the bathroom and fix yourself. But then, the concept of etiquette is lost on some people.

I think the UK in general promotes individuality a lot more than America does. In America everyone belongs to a certain box, race and stereotypes are really prominent in American society, being black means you fit into a particular category or lifestyle. Not in London my dear, people are very independent with their views, unique and separate, no matter your race. There is more unity in things like what part of London you grew up or what school you went to or what music you listen to and other things, and people group themselves without involving race. Within the each race there are so many different languages, cultures, religions, morals and behaviour. Even within the white race, British people often direct more racism at other Europeans such as the Polish or Germans, than Africans or Asians. And a Nigerian Hausa might have more in common with an Asian Pakistani than a Nigerian Igbo, for example, due to religious similarities. There is not any strong unified British culture that people attach to so everyone just does their own thing. But the individuality in a way brings unity, different races are brought together because you don't feel the need to always stick with your own kind.

I have to say as a British person I’m shocked at how you thought skin colour is the same as identity. I’m white British and I would never think I would be a good match with a Russian guy because he’s white. American and African cultures are extremely different as are Europeans and European Americans. Your identity is where you come from not skin colour. I live in Germany now and black Germans are GERMANS and that’s it. I understand why Americans are obsessed with race because of your history and it’s really sad how it’s kept the people divided. I think America is living in a bubble and doesn’t know what the rest of the world is like at all. It’s not so diverse in America because it’s American culture over there. I hope you can travel and live abroad again, especially if you learn another language you learn another way of seeing the world too. It’s truly amazing. I watched your latest video and it was pretty good but stereotypes British. Americans think we are posh and intelligent but you haven’t travelled round the cities and countywide to see how unbelievably diverse the UK is from city to city and the four countries within the UK. You are thinking of rich people and of movies. It’s nothing like real life. British and Americans assume we are going to be similar because we both speak English but we are just as different or even more so than British and Dutch for example. Anyway, your videos are very interesting to see an American perspective.Btw I have a black German friend here and she says the racism here is like she’s asked more often if she’s paid for her bus ticket and a black German guy I know, he’s only 21 said the police ask him what he’s doing at the train station because they think he’s selling drugs so it’s stereotyping him because of what some African immigrants do here at the train station. He never has to fear of police violence though. There’s lots of interesting American KZbinrs living in Germany comparing the cultures, so interesting, check them out. Lots of love from Germany 🇩🇪

Thanks for the comment! Two things I just want to clarify one being somebody whose family is actually from Jamaica I always knew the difference between being Afro Caribbean and African-American so I’m clear that same skin color does not equal same culture. I thought I made that clear in this video. Also in my Harry and Meghan video I did make it clear that I was referring to the British tabloids press and not every day British people so I do understand the difference between the posh pseudo intellectual British persona and the regular every day British bloke. Anyway thanks for watching and love to Germany!

+Akim mwendapole Stop being so dramatic. You just said that south African men are more calm than west African men. Above, another African man said that second generation Africans are more sought after by women of all races and that west African men are in the top three groups for academic achievement. Even more "African" men are placing themselves on a separate level than the "African" men who are "fresh off the boat". You men are making all of these distinctions between "this type of African man" vs. "that type of African man", but you don't want to EVEN CONSIDER the fact that the African men who SHE MET while in London were exactly the way that she described. Africa is a CONTINENT and just like it would be ignorant for someone to say something negative about ALL Africans, it is just as ignorant to not concede that there are SOME men on/from the continent of Africa who may have behaved in the manner that she described.

Kindly she'd light! But mind you any African who tries that hard to diffuse his culture with you really liked or loves you period!! And mainly saw you as a wife material but you didn't get it sista!!. For a multicultural relationship to work, you must understand where the man is coming from culturally to understand certain values and behavioral responses he holds by virtue of his Africanness. You only wanted to show him your independence and assertiveness without compromising via cultural education. African Society and culture is "Collective " in cultural relativity if you cite Geet Hofsteed's scale while much of the west(Usa, Uk, etc) is "Individualist " and African marriages are close knit once you marry, you marry the whole family period! This helps for mutual benefit of all either morally, financially, morally or socially. Instead of sponsoring divorce in disputes, family steps in each time to chastise erring party irrespective of if it's their child or not. How would you behave to parents of your husband if he was African if you don't understand their norms, values etc??? Cause the American media has demonized Afro-American women as sluts, heady, morally loose!! Most African parents want their kids cause of these negative stereotypes to run away from Afro-American women! You can date them, but don't marry them they can't stay in marriage etc???? !!! Imagine

Your video is mischievously trying to make African men seem unreasonable because they are not used to women putting on lipstick at the table. They were probably also experiencing culture shock at your actions, as innocently oblivious of the possible connotations as you were. I am sure some men in the US would also find it rude depending on the household they grew up in.

It's Kells It may be out of touch and prudish but such small things reveal certain things about your education and character. I know in America we have become a culture of “chill.” But anywhere else and even in certain American societies; table etiquette is watched very closely to ascertain who you are and if you really belong there. As Black Americans we are not very discriminating people. We don’t break people down in terms of who they are and what they bring to the table. Much of the world including Europe is very classist. I’m sure you have run into the class issues in England.

actually, dating an African comes with certain considerations. As a matter of fact, most Africans don't talk too much and they have hard time getting along with extroverts. meanwhile most culturally westernized (regardless of color or race) ladies are extroverts and so there is this sort of conflict in communication between ladies of western culture and African men in relationship wise. sometimes, just a request from an African man may be mistaken to be a Demand to a typical westernized lady. and also most culturally Africanized men mistakenly take a sincere expression of thought or action and reaction from a culturally westernized lady to be nagging or disrespectful. if there is a breakthrough in communication, best believe everything else can work out.

My culture is matriarchal not a patriarchal. So women assume a more leadership role within the society and culture. So your assertions are borne out of ignorance just as hers are. Ignorance and prejudice. Another thing yall do is act like African culture is set in stone and is unchanging and unaffected by what happens in the rest of the world which is also a misconception. My mother was a Surgeon and a feminist and my little sister is a surgeon and a feminist now and even in tribes in which tradition is more patriarchal women attaining education and demanding equal rights is altering the way societies in Africa function and the roles of sexes in those societies just as it has everywhere else. Will it produce the exact same results maybe not but has it changed hell yeah!
@jaymt19827 жыл бұрын
rdokoye Lol hahaha you are clearly an ignorant idiot. Just coz you are African doesn't mean you haven't internalised silly stereotypes about Africans which you clearly have. Read up on Lala and Bemba culture stupid. You ask if I know what the definition of matriarchal means but don't define it yourself further exposing your idiocy here I will define it in short form for your inept ass. A Matriarchy or Matriarchal society is one in which women hold primary positions or roles of power and rights over property at the specific exclusion of males in Lala and Bemba culture inheritance of political position and property is passed down from the mother. Women hold prominent leadership roles and have been and currently are queens and or paramount chieftainess. So the roles of women in relationships and in the social hierarchy is different. So sit your dumb ass down.

Hello, i find it somehow funny that you said in the video that you don't want to make any sort of generalisation, but i find it hard to believe just by reading the title of your video i:e "AFRICANS, OH"...you've met what..like two or three Africans and you feel comfortable to give that title...it's a pitty, i mean, i am a Cameroonian ( central Africa ) born and raised, my mom always said to my sisters that a woman's first husband is her job, and that is how i was raised, in our household we were required to do the same chores regardless wether you were a boy or a girl, and never in a billion trillion years i would marry a lazy woman that is not independant.Africa i so much diverse, do you even know that there are some places in Africa where women are the head of the household? they are the one marrying the men and the kids belong to them and their families Now what i also get in your video is something that i found in let's say some modern day so called independant woman, where some of them say they are the equals to men but in their actions they don't really act like it, i mean they will speak or should i say shout louder than you, and they often tend to think they are always right, never wrong, they expect the man to open the door for them, pay the bill during the first date, to propose to them,they will tell you that that's a man's role, but as soon as you tell them if it is my role to do that then your role is to cook for me, boy oh boy, they will scream, shout, call you all sorts of names. They want to be the bosses in their relationships....but guess what the same way you are an independant woman, so i am an independant man, i make my own money, i know how to cook my own food, iron my own clothes, i know how to dress and look hot, sweet and nice, i know how to clean my house and keep it neat, so if for you this is machism, so be it but for me it's called EQUALITY!!!

In some circles it is considered rude or lack of proper social etiquette to dress at a dining table whether it's fixing your hair or face especially if you don't know the person(s) you are with very well.So I don't think these men are strange. I can understand if it's not something that bothers you or you are just unaware that some may consider it unlady like. However you mentioned that you handle yourself with class and maturity, so I guess they expected a higher standard from you. @@ItsKells there is independence and there is independence. With your outlook in life, I am not sure why you"ll be with any type of African man, be them African-African or African born and raised in the Western hemisphere. No African man irrespective of his background diaspora or not, would appreciate independence in their face. The relationship wouldn't last even if it leads to marriage. There are ways to be independent stylishly. Life is about compromise. It depends on what your want and what your end game is. About touching up lip on the table, most people will rather excuse themselves to do that. Maybe, that is the modern way to carrying oneself. We are in an age that anything goes, but some people still believe in standard. Each to its own. From what you have narrated in this video, if I were, I'll stay aware from African men, probably indeed black men. Most black men don't appreciate in-your -face feminism or independence. Am glad you gave a disclaimer on generalizations. I can assure you within a Single Country in Africa, inter-tribal dating itself is a challenge. A quick search on the population of Blacks in the US yields something close to 50 million people. That is the population of a single African Country, like Kenya. Forget the fact that we have 54 countries. Now imagine the character diversities you find in Blacks from the East Coast to the West Coast, Southerners, Those from different economic classes and any more divisions that exist. Within Kenya itself (Am Kenyan by the way), the inter-Tribal diversity is so high you would meet two people with completely different temperament but they are all Kenyans. Humans, even from the same family naturally come in different shapes and forms therefore the samples you dated can never represent Africans, let alone the countries from which they come. Some say West Africans, especially Nigerians, are mostly abrasive and bossy. I know two who are the exact opposite of that. If you dated them and based your deductions on them, those who believe otherwise would be on your neck.

Interesting video! I appreciate the disclaimer where you said you do not want to generalise, because that would be giving an inaccurate account. Africa is a vast continent and cultures differ, therefore men from different countries have different characteristics, even within the country, men from different regions have different views. I'm a 20 year old Mozambican and moved to England in the beginning of 2015. I must say that it is a whole different world, with regards to men. I have mostly been around Nigerian men, who are very different from what I'm used to. I have also lived in South Africa, which is next door to Mozambique, and there also dating is quite different from the Mozambican way. So it all boils down to who you find, we can't really clump them together and say African men are this and that.

what Kells said is true. We can't avoid generalizing. if over 50% of the pipo behave a certain way then its true to say so. It doesnt mean that everybody is like that , but majority. The truth is that most African men like dominating their women. Its not only africans but also pipo from asia and middle east. It was the same in Europe long time ago. So no offense.

I enjoyed this video. It makes me realize that certain things are not being taught or passed down through the generations. Putting lipstick on at the dinner table is a sign of poor etiquette and unladylike. Not cultural. No offense intended. In the same category as blowing your nose, picking your teeth and licking your fingers during supper time. If I need to refresh my makeup I go to the, “power room.” I am Generation X. Raised middle class. These simple etiquette rules were taught in school, church and within the family. From what I hear it’s no longer taught in schools or anywhere else. Depending on class and education. Upper middle class to generational wealthy families still teach proper etiquette. I recommend attending etiquette classes it can be very helpful in creating a classy persona.

Exactly she doesn't realise that and not only that she forgets Africans are welcoming people that expect manners and respect i think this lady was raised in a family where they didn't teach her how to be a classy lady so she takes out her frustration on african man because they expected her to be a respectable lady.

So here I am, late to the party, but this is what I can say, the African men I have known are providers and they see the value of having a wife, but they can be loud and aggressive with women and then quiet and polite with men. I don't get that??? I wouldn't go all negative with my assessment of them, career oriented - yes, present tense fathers - yes. But (just in my experience), emotionally supportive - No. And just to be completely honest, only 2 one from Gambia and 1 from Senegal, didn't fit this definition. And no I didn't date all these guys, mainly for the above stated reasons. Some will just be friends. And it's still good, we are all still finding our way.
@ItsKells2 жыл бұрын
You shared some really good insight here Deltina, thank you! I can agree with you on the aggressive with women but warmer with men… That’s always been confusing. In Africa the man comes first then the women second place no matter their economic status. that is defined by culture .If you don't get it. them you should never have a serious relation with an African man.
@ItsKells8 жыл бұрын
+Kante Musima By most of their attitudes you can tell that is the mindset, but what African men need to understand is that in Western society men and women are generally equal, so they should never have a serious relationship with an American women if they feel "they come first". They seem to conveniently forget that abt westerners when beauty is around.
@foliwe8 жыл бұрын
It's Kells your are very correct about the issue of equality in the western society. We Africa men are very aware of that. We even joke about it. So the question is who needs the order. I am very sure that about 90% of African men will only prefer African women. The order 10% are westernised Africans who are not different to African American. I want you to understand that African women with westernised mindset have issues finding a good relationship as well. Am not trying to say that western(black) women can't have a good relationship but looking on facts that 80% of black American women are single,that is problem. So maybe western black women look into this issue of equality in the society. Maybe it can't work for black people. maybe it's just a white man's thing. Hope you are not offended. u have no intention for that peace .one love

Hi, I have dated a variety of African men here in the states. Some were strait from Africa new to America, some were Nigerian from London, and some were Nigerian but American born and raised. The Americanized ones liked that I was independent. The "strait off the boat" ones tried to make me an African woman. Lol. That didn't last long. In my experience a lot of them are educated but not smart. Meaning they are great at school and work but terrible at social communication outside of their culture. They put on a different attitude based on the people they're around. To me it's fake. They tried to impress me by acting like the stereotypical black males in the media. Lol They also have no problem comparing me to African women. I stay away from them now. I thought they would be better behaved than black American men but they are just as bad. This is not all black and African men but a majority.
@chiefmagistrate9 жыл бұрын
Katice Harris Girl! I understand where you're coming from, and i'm African. lol. The general consensus with African men, some not all, most is that the role of the woman is subservient to their whims and caprices. its sad and we have a long way to go here, but not splitting hairs or pointing fingers, I've noticed the same attitude in African American men. What is common in our black men is the sheer lack of respect for their female counterparts. There's always this idea of what a black woman should be for her man, mother, wife, cook, cleaner, care-taker, etc...all these attributes, but they forget we are human beings. Relationships are not about compromise but synergy! having read and researched i believe the black/African woman was once treated like a queen, and with the influence of European through invasion and colonization of the African continent, came this idea of the subjugation of women. There's always a long list of what a black woman ought to be, and it ignores the fact of what she is. But i have to say, some sisters don't make it easy for us, acting in ways that are contrary to our femininity that allows and excuses bad behaviour from our men/ For example, when did cheating and infidelity become the norm in countries like Nigeria or Ghana (this is from personal experience), granted we are all entitled to our opinions and beliefs, but no one should be shocked when such opinion draws negative attention or reactions, opinions are free, consequences cost. Majority of these men, African and African Americans are looking for doormats, and they will continue looking for them because some sisters pretend to be doormats just to get a man, that is the height of their existence.

@gabrieladava99008 жыл бұрын
+Katice Harris I am saddened by these comments. Maybe I am biased because I was actually born and raised in Africa, but I feel as though you are generalising. Africa is not just one country or one culture. You will find different type of men, from the most loving to the most aggressive. Maybe that is just the type of men you attracted? I just ask not to put Africans in a box, it is really hurtful. I am sorry that you have had bad experiences dating African men. I myself have had a less than pleasant experience dating someone from my own country, but I have also had the most wonderful experience, so it all depends on your partner. I must say, now living in England, I really hope to marry someone from my own country (Mozambique). PS: I don't blame you because even within Africa there are stereotypes, in Mozambique, Nigerian and South African men are viewed as the worst men you could choose, and even my family which is well educated, I believe would frown upon me ever dating these men. But since moving to England and being exposed to different people, I have come to realise that it all depends on the person you find, nothing to do with where they're from.

Most African men are individualistic, they tend not to say and do the same thing.

It's Kells I have to say there is an element of truth in yr observation with some african men, but for the mojority that is not the case. I am african myself with african American woman and we had a lot of misunderstanding from the beginning of our relationship, but thank God we stuck it out and today we are as happy as we could be. The problem isn't the african being bossy and demanding, there is a Standard to which women are held to in african society and culture. And unfortunately some sisters through no fault of theirs , but the flexibility of the western culture are allowed to express themselves freely without good etiquette being at the fore front of their actions. For example there is nothing wrong with having yr lip gross on at a dinner, however understanding of the african mindset would have done u a lot of good. First and foremost that is not a good etiquette , second is a lack of respect for the man u dating in the african perspective by not being conscious and '' ladylike"" enough to excuse yrself. So when such situations occur and african man will point it out to you and in an attempt to explain urself and not see it his perspective it can come off as being rude and no african man will back down from that allowing u to have yr way. But the truth is with time u will see things from his way of thinking and he will come to terms with the way u do things and whiles u reach that point u will begin to relate to each other the way u r both use to and that is where yr relationship will blosom. So my advise is we can both have great relationship lack but lack of understanding of the expectations of how things needs to be done from each individuals perspective may come of us being bossy or demanding. But trust me that is the initial stages n once u move pass that n u get to know each other more things will be great. Top tips for good relationship with african, don't go with expectations for him to be yr typical african American male, he is not being bossy but telling u abt himself and culture and what he prefers to see in his woman. don't be burdened by them, just find a compromise n be patient but not loose urself n communicate better don't assume he gets u, u could both be speaking English but means nothing, is all abt how these words are interpreted differently by each individual. N most importantly be lady like it trumps a lot of things whiles u have establish yr relationship u can ease on that , first impression is always important. Also date very educated african more likely to be open minded . also men from some african countries are very ethnocentric and dose one are all abt the culture.

Sweet heart if you ended bad with an African guy it's on you and if you dated more then one and you have the same results you have options and some times you have to look within your self and ask yourself what are you doing wrong to get the same results. Some times we expect too much from others.when you say African prince, us African woman don't go on a date with an African man and expect a prince to pop up, we date the person and if it works out he'll see you as a queen just like you'll see him as king , but it sounds kind of fantasy to even expect that from a guy because of his nationality or dream of a prince and it's not like that people don't show up perfect, I've dated out of my culture and race and in some it worked out and some didn't end well but I don't think all is the same I have 4 brothersand each of them are different and I find it very hurtful when you say that about an African men because my brothers also dated American , Armenian, Chilean and if something went wrong they talked about the person not the cultural background just like I defended a French mix guy that said he would only date black African girls and not black American because they have no family values ... You say your not generalizing but if you see the video yourself you will see that you are. I was born in the states I also dated black American and i can say their are good just like bad. Maybe their are cultural differences but if their are proof if Africans married to people that are none African or black American ... It's obvious it can work out. I just think you ran into the wrong one.
