I’m Vietnamese but raised in America. I left Vietnam at 8 years old and now am now 52 years old. My dad raised me to be very old school, as in, I didn’t get to date. My dad chose a financially stable husband for me when I was in 9th grade, and told me he was my future husband. I trusted my dad and never questioned him. My husband and his parents had to ask my dad for permission to save me for my husband when I got out of high school and marry him. So even though, I was raised in America and feel I am more America than Vietnamese, I still hold the Vietnamese old school mentality that we don’t date just to date. We date with the goal to get married. And a typical Vietnamese man will lose face if he asks a Vietnamese woman and her parents for her hand in marriage, without being financially stable. It’s his pride and joy to assume that manly man mentality as the bread winner, hence he has the respect from not only the woman, but her families as well. And that’s very important for a Vietnamese woman to have pride in her husband who is the provider. The husband who provides, will be much respected and admired by all around her. It’s not about money but it is about how the woman feels he is committed to her. My husband and never said “I love you” verbally but through our commitment and loyalty and trust with each other in our daily actions, we are conveying love without saying the words. There is trust through a husband freely providing for his wife and family. My husband is 10 years older than me and that is very normal. Not viewed as negative like in the US culture. I was 19 and he was 29 when we married. It’s very true what you said that most old school Vietnamese women with higher values, requires a father, and provider in her husband.

Many thanks for your extensive comment. You gave some valuable insight into the psychology and dynamics between Vietnamese couples. It was very interesting to read and I am always eager to receive such deeper thoughts because I am learning something here. Thanks for sharing your story. I am wondering how it is today in Vietnamese culture? Is the dating culture changing and the culture in general? I believe yes, but slowly. I believe many young Vietnamese women (age 20-30) still think and behave the way you explained. It will serve as a good compass for Western guys to know about this and to adopt accordingly.

There’s nothing wrong with a woman seeking financial stability. It’s in their nature. It’s how they’re hardwired. By the same token, as men, we have to provide provision, protection, and leadership. I’ve dated a Vietnamese woman for 6 years. She’s great. The relationship is difficult at times. She has 2 VERY selfish daughters. They treat her like a doormat. I struggle with this all the time. In the end, while they may be looking for financial security, at least you’re getting a traditional, fit, clean, and loyal woman. Unlike in the west.

Vietnamese people are quite pragmatic. I wouldn't say that Viet people in general are money-grubbers, but because so many Vietnamese people live with low socio-economic status that they became good at looking out for opportunities to live a better life. My mom was like that. Met an American man through selling her paintings online in the early Internet days. Kept in touch for a while, then decided to take me with her to the US to marry him when I was 8. Despite having a good roof over our head, her pragmatism definitely didn't end there. She tried to work many different odd jobs despite knowing little English and made sure that I was on top of my education so that I wouldn't start falling behind in American schools. I owe my education motivation to her even though it was my step-dad who provided us the means to pursue such paths. However, her practical mindset was too much for him to handle (this would cause arguments almost every single day) and they had no choice but to separate after 10 years. To him, she wasn't accommodating enough in the intimacy realm while feeling that she was trying to undermine him and take control of the household. Even I bore the brunt of her harshness when it came to her extreme pragmatism. Everything must be done correctly (according to her standards), as soon as possible, and has practical value to the family or else it was a waste of time. It was difficult for adolescent me to reconcile this mindset with the Western teen culture that I was trying to fit into as well and this caused a lot of conflicts between us (thankfully we've mostly made up now as she and I got older and I regained empathy for everything she's ever believed was for my benefit). Now I have an American boyfriend who I've been dating for 5 years (total of 10 years of dating experience for me) and I do have to agree that being born with low economic stability really does make one want for more. But money isn't everything (at least not to me). I graduated college with a degree in chemical engineering and worked as an academic researcher for many years before realizing that I wasn't happy with the work even with high potential of economic stability. (I have another Vietnamese friend who is totally fine with being in the engineering industry though and admire her for pursuing it even though she was a high school transfer student from Vietnam whose English wasn't as good. Different folks, different strokes.) Now I'm back in school trying to get a master's in education and am happier doing what I enjoy more as well as having taught myself how to be financially literate in the Western world so that my hard work will not go to waste in the future. Sometimes I do feel sad having been torn away from the rest of my Vietnamese family at a young age, but now all I can focus on is trying my best to give both myself and the people I care about, mostly my mom who is still working in her 60's, a better life and help her retire as soon as I can. I try to remember that Vietnamese people are really resilient to motivate myself into doing better in my own way and keeping my family well above the poverty line.

I dated a vietnamese some years ago, i noticed that they are rather stand-offish to accept money if they are serious. It ties in to the whole face thing, they don't want to give a bad impression if they like you. When getting more serious the finances of the family become your finances and with that i mean the whole family, parents, siblings seventh degree aunties... It's a very family oriented culture. It is much more important to impres the parents with your standing than the girl herself. Overal a positive experience eventhough we couldn't make it work do to the distance.

Status is also important to the Vietnamese. A wealthy foreign partner certainly adds to their prestige amongst their friends. As a retired 58 year old, I acquired a 30 year old girlfriend with traditional values in Hanoi without even trying. She is also 170cm tall so her choice of Vietnamese partners taller than herself was limited.

Anh and em means older brother and younger sister but in the context of a couple it doesn’t mean that at all. It’s rather the equivalent of sweetheart in the masculine and in the feminine form. She calls him Anh and he calls her Em. It’s a term of endearment.

For me, the Ultimate form of Love as a man is Respect, Loyalty, and Care. I'm not willing to compromise on any of those. If loyalty is based mainly on financial status that's a big deterrent for me. Don't get me wrong I do personally believe a man should provide. I make considerably higher than average, I'm 6'2, good-looking, and from Puerto Rico so I get the benefits of being Latino and a U.S Citizen. I'm fiercely loyal and loving. I would like someone that if a life circumstance ever came that wealth was impacted for some time frame for whatever reason or if another man with more money came around the relationship that I have cultivated with that person is worth more than disloyalty. With the way you've presented things, it's like culturally they are programmed to move on to a better option if they have youth and beauty which is not something rare throughout many places in the world. At this point, I feel my only hope is to find an individual that meets standards and hopes that the culture encourages the 3 aforementioned necessities (Respect, Loyalty, and Care.) That being said boy oh boy it is a tedious process to truly find the right person and it's an Art to know how to allow them to reveal their true nature. Well most things truly worth having require hard work and patience. Thank you for the video and pardon my rant.

Hey Ricardo, thanks for sharing. I am from Europe and had to learn about Asian dating the hard way because of the cultural differences. There is a huge difference between dating women in Western countries compared to Asian countries. Culture, tradition, and especially economics still play a big part here. But on the other side, it is pretty simple to date Asian women because they still have more conservative and traditional values and they are way more feminine. This is what a woman is supposed to be, in my opinion (feminine). Asian women are proud to be women and they show it in public as in private. Men play their part and women are playing their part. This is what is expected. If you know the rules and agree, then there are no issues. Some things are similar, yes. Some things are really hard to understand and sometimes it feels disappointing. I absolutely agree with you saying that it is a tedious process to truly find the right person. This is spot on and many people would agree.

It was not easy to find a relationship in Nam. It took 3 dates to finally start seeing a beautiful girl i found. Includes being threatened with a knife by an uncle, having to meet the family for hours (tough as they were close to my age- but turned out real nice people). Lots of trust concerns... and takes many weeks to develop.

Here in DxB you can hook up or sleep with girls but it’s extremely difficult to form a relationship. I’m thinking about traveling the next 2-3 years every year for 3 to 4 months. And Vietnam girls are kinda really good looking so i wonder if this is a good idea or not…. I chatted with a few and the seem to be really “practical” probably I should just got to China or so? I was talking to 3 VN girls on a dating site and all 3 are just very slow responding and very straight forward and shallow conversation. Maybe it's due to the language barrier. I know one was translating with an app. But it kind of seems like there is a slow process because they don't seem to appreciate deeper or more intrusive lines of questioning early on. Very guarded and private it seems. I approached all 3 women with different strategy and all lead to the conclusion that it's going to be really time consuming with a lot of hoops to jump through just to try to form a connection. I legitimately couldn't tell if they were actually interested or not but they always responded and they liked me first and I chose to match so.. surely they'd have just bailed if they weren't interested? The language barrier just adds to the difficulty. And with you saying that the relationship is a bit more transactional with the women highly emphasizing financial security and basically checking off the checklist of requirements seems.. unromantic. Ironically I have those values and the security and what I'm looking for is someone who does value those things but to also connect with in other ways. It's almost like they're not interested in who you are on a deeper level as long as you meet the requirements. In contrast, I talked to someone from PH and it was so smooth and easy to talk to them and joke around which of course makes connection easy. And they speak good english. I'm just wondering if the extra time required for VN women is worth it? Are they more loyal for example?

@7128jml I think the experience you have shared here with VN women is quite common among other Expats. I have done a video about Filipinas/Vietnamese girls here 👉kzbin.info/www/bejne/hWbZqZZjjpmhj9ksi=WVIAdjePZUtHO2GG check it out! Yeah, communication with Filipinas is great. With VN girls you need to be more patient. The language barrier sucks. On top of that, the dating sites CAN be a tricky source for finding good quality women. Either Filipina or Vietnamese: both have top qualities in terms of wife material. You can find caring, loyal and honest women both in the Philippines as well as Vietnam - tons of them.

Sorry to hear about your current circumstances! As for the girl you are chatting with: no need to mention anything to her yet if you don't like. You are just chatting. Try to test the waters but do not take online chatting too seriously. The best thing to do is to meet these girls in person as soon as you can. If you are not able to fly to Vietnam, then take it easy. Keep in mind that many of these ladies are also hiding information, pretending and just making up stories. In short, you play your game and they play their game.

Very interesting insights I cannot believe people have a problem with some of the things you say.. You are keeping it real.. I am 55 I have not been to the Philippines or Thailand and Mexico can be the same but the dating age Gap is an illusion not exactly prostitution but pay to play service in the form of you are the family's ATM machine but I have Filipino friends and a girl in particular this is all a normal thing.. What you are explaining with Vietnamese women it's exactly the same with Japanese women.. Which I'm a business owner e-commerce so that is perfect for me.. Because American women do not like to talk about business.. Whereas Asian women love business and incorporating this into a relationship... Whereas American women are looking for Fairy Tales.. That I love you means brother sister thing is mind blowing... Maybe it's better to use romantic lines from German or American Heavy Metal lyrics just leave the I love you out.. Haha.. good show

I'm currently dating a Vietnamese lady. She's from tra vinh south Vietnam. I met her in real life in her small town. And things are going great. However one thing you mentioned about the "gold diggers " in Vietnam has me asking a few questions to myself. To give you some context I'm financial stable good job etc and from England. While I've been here I've paid for everything as i knew Vietnamese women want to know if the man is economical stable. But no matter what i do (financial for her) it's never good enough. Its really frustrating because like you say in your video , its frowned upon in western society to discuss money etc......and I've tried explaining this to her but she thinks I'm looking down on her about money. I'm a very generous man and material things don't matter to me but no matter what i do she misunderstands me and thinks i don't like spending money on her. I've literally bought all her family gifts , bought meals and drinks for friends and provided all her wants and needs. It really is very frustrating because I've bent over backwards for her and done everything i possibly can to make her feel secure and stable financially. Any tips or help will be greatly appreciated. Many thanks.

Well, first of all, I would say that you are lucky that you just date her and are not married to her! What you shared here sounds to me like she is a gold digger. When I here you saying, "But no matter what i do (financial for her) it's never good enough", is definitely a red flag mate! And if you met her on a dating site, then my condolences to you. Be careful with the online dating sites!! Perhaps she is also skilled to play victim and making you feel guilty. Paying for food, drinks, a motorbike ride home, movies is ok. Other than that I would not pay. Especially not during the first two or three months of dating her or for her friends or buy gifts for the entire family. Of course it always depends on the specific situation but as a general rule you don't want to set the bar too high. By that I mean, think in terms of "Highschool Dating". When we were in high school we had no big budgets to spend on women, right?! Rather, spend time with the women, talk to her (if she speaks English, haha) walk on the beach, go for a coffee, a movie, sit on a bench in a park. This is how Highschool-Dating was/is done. If you constantly throw cash at her you just raise the bar and she will ask: "What's next?" And maybe your girlfriend does not "misunderstand" certain things as much as she pretend she does. A girl who really likes you and is in to you likes your presence first and foremost. She is just happy to be around you wherever you go or whatever you do. Don't condition her to expect things like money or consumer items from you. You buy her a phone once - ok. Next time you buy her a handbag, you created expectations already. After the third time of buying some stuff for her she then feels entitled to receive. And if then you suddenly stop, she gets upset. That brings me to the next point. We men have the disorder called "Impressing a Woman with Money or material Goods". Most men spend money on the girl to impress her. What these men are really after are actually approval and validation by the women. Women are very smart to sniff that out. They sense that. At the end you are ending up being the sucker and the women might even start to emotionally manipulate you and abuse you. I think this is what is happening to you right now with that lady. She is selfish. Get away from her! Don't waste any more money on her and time!! There is more to say about that topic but that should suffice for the moment. No need to shower her with cash all the time just to prove your financial stability. My advise from a distance. Perhaps I shoot a video about this topic in the future.

Here’s a tip: run, don’t walk. I lived in Vietnam for 1.5 years. You can find a decent woman who will love you. What you have on your hands is a nightmare waiting to unfold.

I suggest starting in Sai Gon (Ho Chi Minh City) because the city is suitable for expats. Try to get on a dating site first and then work your way forward. Set up an online dating account only immediately prior to your arrival. No need to start getting into action too soon when you are still in your home country. Online dating sites are only ONE OPTION though. I don't know how social you are but I believe there are plenty of opportunities to meet women.

The issue in Vietnam and Thailand is the endless parade of sugar babies. The stereotype and stigma of dating a foreign guy is so bad among citizens because of that. People gossip, friends break friendships, families disown over it. So normal girls simply won’t, unless they’re looking for a green card donkey. Very rare to find a woman anywhere who doesn’t care at all about the society she lives in and what people think.
@MinimalistNomad

In general it is hard to find people that do not care about the society-circus and culture we live in. Most care what others think about them...it applies to men and women all over the globe.

I do not. (I'm half Taiwan and Viet. Live in VN since birth) That's why I was an outcast since kid. My Vietnamese friends sick me off asking about my salary, my job title, blah blah... I f hate that so I cut them off and just be on my own and live a lonely life. I dont think I'm the only one tho. There are more out there who is 'normal' Those gold diggers are just f up girls who was raised by f up parents. However, I dont think just VN has money lovers tho

Its not that were not interested in foreign men. I as a Vietnamese woman was once told by my dad to beware of foreign men who come to Vietnam seeking for women just to sleep around(i think he just views all foreigners in a bad way). Theyre called "Tây ba lô" here in Vietnam, which translates to "Western backpacking tourists"😅

Damn, this is as such an interesting video. You are a well thought out, smart person. The initial tone at the start of the video was a bit dry tho (maybe just German lol). Glad I didnt skip video. Btw, do you think it will be easy to find "adventurous" type women there? I hate cities, and love sailing, diving, hiking, camping, living in a RV, etc., But I see most instagram pictures of Vietnamese women seem to be looking like supermodels posing with a Gucci bag. If I were to take her horse riding in Mongolia or something, I feel they are just Barbie dolls that will just fall apart lol... Do you think Vietnamese women expect to live the "boring" city/lazy life? Also I remember a friend complaining about how his Viet gf burned a ton of his money starting a restaurant, he was pretty salty n seperated... Btw when you mean they are money minded, does it mean they love running the rat race/hustle culture? I enjoy doing work Im good at, but I hate hustling.

Thanks. 1. Yeah, I am still working on my delivery 😂 2. Don't consume these Insta pics and don't be guided by them. It is for your own detriment and does not reflect reality at all. 3. There are all types of women in VN, I am sure also adventurous ones too! 4. Concerning the money: I just released a video about this topic 👉 kzbin.info/www/bejne/d4K2ZZeAdqeila8 Vietnamese women think practically and the entire dating paradigm in VN is about whether or not you can provide and fund as a man.

The only thing I can say is: go and try. But in my view these older women would prefer older men in their same age range because as a 20 year old you are not considered mature and financially stable enough. That's my guess. And in Vietnamese culture, if at all, then women marry older men, not the other way around.

Sinitic is wrong adjective to associate with VNese women, they would not appreciate that deep in their culture, don't lump the Chinese girl and VNese girl together please. Can we say German girl is Italianic, because Roman Empire ruled Germany in hundreds of years ago? Talk about insulting a Country this is it.
@MinimalistNomad

Fact is: The Roman Empire ruled over parts of what is today Germany, correct. But why should I feel insulted over a historical established fact? And by the way: Germanic tribes where the ones who kicked the Romans ass, made their Empire crumble and eventually ruled over the remains of the former Roman Empire for hundreds of years. So I guess, we are even. Go figure!

Don't give up bro! I recommend that you try dating sites like "Vietnam Cupid". I found some of my dates via that website, two of them in Da Nang! Don't go to the bars. There you are just going to meet hookers. Good Vietnamese girls are not hanging around in bars late at night. Good VN girls either study hard or have a job.
