Datsun 240Z Restoration - Bare Metal to Primer Perfection (Part 4)

In this video I'm continuing the restoration on my 1973 Datsun 240Z. After all the bodywork and the panel alignment in the last episode the car was finally ready to start with the paint job.
The first step for a new paint job is, to get all the old paint removed doen to the bare metal. I brought the car to a blasting company. They completely blasted the whole car and all the parts. For paint removal they used walnut shells. This is the perfect media for that job, because it does not warp any of the panels. Only downside is that it doesn't remove rust and it also doesn't roughen up the surface, which is not ideal for paint to stick. So after the paint was stripped with the walnut shells, they used aluminium oxide to remove the rust and also roughen up the surface all around. The total blasting took around 11 hours. Blasted parts do rust very quickly, so it is very important to protect the metal right after it. It's also very important to not touch any of the blasted parts with bare hands. Therfore all the sheet got protected with a layer of zinc dust primer. It's a polyurethane based primer which is moisture curing. It is very elastic and doesn't chip, it really becomes one with the metal, like zinc plating. After the zinc dust primer you can touch it and move the car without having to worry about rust.
For building up the paint I still need to apply one coat of epoxy primer. It will isolate the zinc dust primer and will be the base of the coming paint. To get good adhesion I sanded the zinc dust primer with 240 grit everywhere and washed it all off with silicone remover to get it grease free. The car was put on the rotisserie for that. Epoxy was applied first inside of the car, then engine bay and then on the outside starting with the roof. After it was dry to touch the car was turned 90° to paint the underside. It's important to let it dry before turning because it always could come out a little sand from the cavities and drip into the wet paint. After one day of curing I also applied epoxy on all the cavities. All the runs and drops can now easily be wiped off.
After letting the epoxy cure for one week it was time to move on with the high build primer. For good adhesion I roughend up the epoxy with Scotch Brite. After masking and degreasing two to three coats of high build primer were applied. High build primer is there to build up material for sanding it down later. It's like a very thin coat of body filler to fill out little imperfections. The high build primer also needs to cure for another week. After removing all the masking it was time to put the car back together for block sanding. All seals, windows, and locks were installed with the freshly restored hinges. Unfortunately I didn't had the time to record the restoration of the door hinges. I disassembled the original ones and sanblasted all the parts. I then recut the threads, chamfered all sharp edges and brought them for yellow zinc plating. On the lathe I made new bushings out of very tough aluminium bronce and also new pins out of silver steel.

no matter how you plan it, restoring an oldtimer always takes longer than expected. my Isetta is half the size of your car, and I even took an entire summer for the stripdown and the bodywork repairs. When the bodywork was ready for the paint job, it had become winter, and I had to pause for another five months.

People who will lightly sand and repaint something, clean up and polish, or just expel as little effort as possible to make something less shitty. I have followed your channel for over half a decade now, I can say nobody does work as thoroughly and wonderfully as you. Honestly, I think metallic brown is a seriously underrated color and wish some luxury cars still offered it. One of my cousins had a boat painted in brown flake, and he named it "Brown Sugar". From what I have seen, I would say MM worked nearly every weekday around 8 to 10 hours on the project - in the workshop! Bet he surely also had quite a few long nights figuring stuff out at home as well. So he is dedicated to the bone - it just took a lot of time getting that part of the restoration perfect.

The work in this video was actually finished in around mid-April, and the next part is well underway. There was a huge gap between parts 3 and 4 because of some very large unexpected setbacks with the primer and scheduling issues with securing a spray booth to use.

i had the pleasure growing up watching someone build a similar car. every day when i was walking to school i saw this car closer and closer to the finish line. as i got older and moved up to secondary school, a few years later i saw his car drive past with it’s signature dual blue stripes. the joy i felt seeing it was amazing. this reminds me of those times that are far in the past now :)

I am blown away every time by your videos. I knew from the moment you announced the restoration of an entire car that it was destined to turn out flawless. You would not settle for less, and nothing made that more clear than re-cutting the painted threads and bluing the bolt studs. I hope people realize that they are only seeing the tip of the iceberg of the incredible amount of work you (and a few pros) put in. You see the primer going on, but don't see the setup and positioning, the masking, the suit-up and PPE, the moving the cameras around, the cleanup of the spray guns... all just to set up for paint. This thing will be museum-grade perfect when it is done. Take all the time you need to make it your way. It'll be perfect, and worth every second of wait.

Absolutely incredible craftsmanship. There is no assessing how much this restoration would cost. It’s a masterpiece of love. I had a ‘72 Datsun 240z, that spent way too many winters in the rust belt of upstate NY. Finally when the engine and front suspension pulled away from the front sheet metal frame rails I decided to restore it. I disassembled the car down to the unibody, just as in this video. Then I started by cutting away the obvious really bad rust areas, and sand blasted the rest of the car to bare metal. After hours of sandblasting, there was nothing left of the car to self to.. . It made for easy disposal, as all I had to do was sweep up all the dust and throw it in the trash.. I parted out the salvageable stuff. The only thing good that came out of it was, I was doing all the work in my garage in Webster, NY in the winter…where even with a space heater, the garage was barely above freezing. And amazingly our first daughter was born 9 months after I started the restoration. Even living now in Southern California I thoroughly examine any used car I consider purchasing for rust. I’ve seen older Zs that spent their entire life in Southern California that had rust in the usual body spots. But, typically the unibody frame was not rotted. They were great cars, but an early example of a complete unibody that was made of inferior steel, and had no surface treatment in any of the hidden areas. This all partially explains my recent purchase of an all aluminum Jaguar XKR. Even that I had put up on a lift, and I checked all of the metal over thoroughly. I I’m looking forward to future episodes.

For someone like me who lives with four different chronic illnesses, the amount of work you're putting into this is like magic. I am happy that you can do it and very envious at the same time :D. That is soooooo much work. If the original car had been made like this it would have cost over twice as much as it did when brand new. A restoration like this would cost you an easy $30,000 or more. I've never seen anyone go into the detail that this guy does, and I have seen a lot of restorations. Amazing work, amazing channel. You are totally backing up that ''Swiss Made'' moniker. You folks are unsurpassed when it comes to detail and quality work.
