The canoe is a great tool for all outdoor activities. When I was about 12 I saved up all spring doing side jobs to buy my first beat up fiberglass canoe off of my dad. It had so many holes in it so I had to work on it for a long time to get it right. That's when I learned how to work with fiberglass. I really have to get a canoe again. So much gear on that list... Thanks for sharing this video.

Enjoyed this a lot Dave, thanks. Canoes are great around here, lots of little creeks and ponds off in the woods that you can't easily access by other means. I see so much more game when in a canoe or on the bike, even compared to walking. Take care, Roosevelt

Love canoes! One thing I practice every year is tipping over and filling the canoe up with water, then empty out as much as possible and getting back in. Its an important thing to know if you ever get caught in big waves or fast water. Just one of those things thats good to know to help you out of what could be a bad situation.

great video. as a river guide, I just wanted to add that if you do happen to be in moving water, and you have rope in the boat (which you probably will), you need to make sure it's as secure as you can make it, ideally in some sort of container or bag unless you really need it close at hand while you paddle. rope is one of the most dangerous things you can put in a current, and it's just about everywhere on boats. it's also another good reason to always carry a knife.

Up at my parent's hunting camp there do not seem to be very many deer(at least that is the general consensus) I made a PVC rack for the 4 wheeler, strapped on my Old Town, and put it in at the bridge you cross to get into camp, floated 1 mile downstream on opening day, and bagged a nice 7 pointer by 8am. No one had ever tried to hunt the area because the brush is too thick to walk through, but via canoe it was easy as hell. Great points in the video Dave. BTW, I wear an inflatable PFD, try it.

Once canoed down the Coos river in Oregon. Spent three days camping and fishing along the way. From Silver Falls, across Coos Bay , and out into the Pacific. Great, quiet way to travel and see some beautiful back country. By the way bud, it's always and I mean always a 50% chance of rain. It's either gonna rain..... or it's not.

In my opinion the difference between a canoe for lake versus a river canoe, i mainly in the keel design. On a river (especially with some white water) you want easy manoeuvrability. On the lake you look for ability to keep a steady course. The river canoe will therefor have a short and maybee curved "keel", while the keel on the lake canoe is longer an straighter. Thank you Dave for lots and lots of interesting videos!

Man, I haven't canoed since I was in boy scouts, I would love to go again. I have been trying to get some family/friends to go canoe down river a bit then beach and camp for the night then finish the trip in the morning, but so far its a no go. Did that once in scouts and it was so much fun probably one of my favorite outings.

Hi. I like your fishing series. If you add a rod holder to your canoe, you can troll some lures and increase the fishing time while scouting around. Works well with a kayak, too. Just use some floating surface lures in shallow water. Thanks for your videos. Greetings from Germany Ugorr

I never thought about bringing a weather radio with me. Good idea. Although you have to have a signal, Radar Scope is the best life saver app there is out there. Almost live radar...usually 2-3 minutes behind. Numerous high end features....rainfall accumulation, wind velocities, Cell Altitude, live lightening strikes, hail visualization with size and storm speed, measuring from location to edge of storm can give you approx. time of arrival. It actually shows probable tornados and line of travel. I watched one coming straight at me at me on Radar Scope ....I put my grand daughter in a closet with pillows. I watched it pass within 400 yds of my home. It truly is a life saving app.

I have one thing to add Dave, when you got to the part about your radio, I'd like to bring to the conversation Amateur Radio. It's an excellent resource for the pack and the knowledge base, and with a little research it's not too difficult to figure out a system that can solar charge your radio that will fit into a smaller pelican case. Just a little food for thought. :-)

Dave, just some advice to make your canoing easier. You should have your top hand on the knob of the paddle. It will allow you to glide in the water better, while spending less energy. Also, instead of switching sides all the time, you should stick to one side and make a large (C) motion in the water to turn to the opposite side and a (J) motion to turn to the same side of where your paddle is. You might not get what I mean by reading this but once you try it, you will understand. :)

there's a lot of strokes besides the J stroke, the Canadian, the Indian...everyone can do what they want, I'm always surprised to see you paddling that way, simply because you have so much reverence for the old time outdoorsmen, I always figured you'd admire the skills of the old trappers in canoes. But you know, I learn so much from you, I guess I'll just overlook your paddling technique.

do you have any plans to touch on the history of canoe use. It would fit very well into your twenty first century long hunter series. After all most of the most of the trapping trading and scouting that was done in North America was done on the water with canoes. For instance the Hudson's Bay Company and the Lewis and Clark voyage used canoes extensively. Also you may want to try a shorter wooden paddle in conjunction with various stroke techniques. its satisfying to propel a canoe in that way

Another good video, Dave. Its nice to see real footage, not the crap you see on the outdoor channel where they make it look like you should be able to catch a monster fish every other cast. Hunting is the same way. It you don't feed the animals, you could sit for days and never see a deer.

Hey Dave, Checkout some of the FRS Radios, they have the NOAA weather bands on them. This works great for Multi- purpose and if you have another person with you and you get out and scout gives you 2 way cummincation or if you have more than one boat in your group. Then of course if you don't make it back for some reason, the person who knows your float plan can notify search and rescue, our come to ramp where you launch and try to reach you. Like the New intro!

Hey Dave, just wondering why you picked an aluminum canoe over say a poly type? I find them much noisier but I guess they could also be sturdier and easier to repair. I love my little old town. I have an 01 XJ also. I drilled a hole through the center of the front bumper and put an "eye" bolt through it(after I welded the eye so it can't open under tension)that I use to lash the front of my canoe.

Canoes need to be registered in Ohio? How much does that canoe weigh? Usually the really inexpensive ones weigh a considerable amount for their size. Canoes are great to allow you to carry more gear however, unless you are sticking to one lake or river system, sooner or later you're going to need to portage your canoe and gear.

I'm no expert on canoeing but noticed you switched hands a lot to keep going in a straight line. If, at the end of your stroke, you tilt the paddle upwards and keep it there for a bit in the water, it helps a lot in straightening the canoe out and you dont haver to change hands that often.

Dave, I dont know if its legal where you live, but it is where I do, so Im suggesting that you do a video on processing a turtle, like a soft-shell turtle. Theyre prevalent in a lot of fresh water systems, and if youre in a survival situation with bank lines trying to catch catfish, theres a good chance you'll catch a turtle. I think that would make a good addition to this series. Plus, I hear turtles good!
