Thank you David, there is a great lesson here that is worth gold, and you articulated it beautifully. Composition should not only be informed, but rooted in art history. All the mechanics aspects and abstract elements of the composition should resonate in harmony with a poetic element rooted in art history. Thank you for carrying the mantle of the artist and sharing your knowledge with a broader audience. I hope a can be a torch bearer for the art tradition as well.

Great camera work and editing. And Rebecca is knowledgeable, too! I'm 62 y.o. 12 years ago, I began teaching myself to paint by watching and following along with Bob Ross demos. After awhile, I moved away from his methods; in fact, I felt like much of his brushwork was too simplistic and telling. Very large brushes, stippling, sgraffito for example. In doing so, after watching your video, I see I have been making my life more difficult. I'm not comparing your methods to Ross, but rather I now see the value in using the methods you have so deftly demonstrated, when and where I can. This painting is beautiful. It reminds me of John Constable's complex, twisted trees and underbrush of ordered and natural confusion. Thank you.

Dear mykos21 - That is a very complicated question. For painting, I primarily try to use have the natural daylight from my skylight and other north facing windows in the studio. For other circumstances, at night for example, I am using a combination of LED bulbs with different color temperatures. I try to take pictures of my paintings in shaded daylight in my studio, but I also have a set up of full spectrum LED lights to take pictures of my paintings when that is not possible. @DavidDunlopSimmonsArt
@DavidDunlopSimmonsArt Жыл бұрын
Dear taosfamily - Thank you for your question and your kind comments, I paint on many different surfaces, from quadruple primed Belgian linen, paper, copper, single sheet aluminum, a composite sheet aluminium, like Dibond, comprising two 0.3 mm thick aluminium cover layers and a polyethylene or mineral core, and sometimes I paint over older paintings on all of these surfaces. It really depends upon my painting, and different surfaces give different effects. Some are harder surfaces and you can make different types of marks with your paint brushes, squeegees, paper towels, and other tools. I always experiment and learn from all of these paintings. Good luck with your painting! Thank you for writing. Kind regards, David and Connie

I have watched a number of your videos this week and I'm super enthralled plus very interested in trying the aluminum, but I wonder about priming that surface. If you've addressed this in other videos, you could point me to it and I would happily search but I'm wondering why no gesso ground before the white paint by Golden? Does it ever have a tendency to flake or is it possible to scratch through to reveal the aluminum when handling or storing it after it's dry? Would you retain your method if using acrylics instead of oils? just wonder if you could speak to that topic a little bit somewhere. Thank you so much.

@DavidDunlopSimmonsArt
@DavidDunlopSimmonsArt 9 ай бұрын
HI, Mona - Thank you for watching and for writing! David paints on many different surfaces and many times it of course depends upon the subject and also his interest! David paints and has painted on a variety of surfaces. a. He recently has been painting on enameled aluminum composite panels: white, silver and gold. They provide a very smooth surface that David has been enjoying. (From David: The faster and smoother the surface the greater the spectrum for possible touches and marks. It's why renaissance painters from Jan van Eyck to DaVinci preferred polished smooth surfaces. No preparation is required.) They are made and marketed as Dibond, CompBond, and AlumaBond and the suppliers will vary depending on where you live. You can also check with local sign painting companies and laminator companies to request materials as well. b. David also paints on and has painted on quadruple primed Belgian linen (Artfix L84U), portrait canvas (linen) pads, and smooth canvas pads. c. David also paints on acrylic varnished watercolor paper - the smoother the surface the better. He varnishes the watercolor paper, clayboards, gesso boards and inexpensive canvas pads, stretched canvases or other panels with Golden’s Polymer Gloss Varnish. The watercolor paper he uses is a 140 lb. hot press and Bristol Plate paper. Warm regards, David and Connie

HI, maria-doloresvazquez-abad4221 - Thank you for writing and for your question. The aluminum surface can add brightness and luminosity and it can also be covered so that the shine is not visible. You can use more translucent layers on the silver or gold surfaces and you will see a brightness and luminosity. Good luck with your painting! Kind regards, David and Connie

Dear salgaldenco - Thank you for your question. I paint on many different surfaces, from quadruple primed Belgian linen, paper, copper, single sheet aluminum, a composite sheet aluminium in white, silver or gold, like Dibond, comprising two 0.3 mm thick aluminium cover layers and a polyethylene or mineral core, and, as you can see, I sometimes I paint over older paintings on all of these surfaces. It really depends upon my painting, and different surfaces give different effects. Some are harder surfaces and you can make different types of marks with your paint brushes, squeegees, paper towels, and other tools. I sometimes lightly sand the surface before I paint over the older painting. I always experiment and learn from all of these paintings. Good luck with your painting! Thank you for writing. Kind regards, David and Connie

I enjoy your videos. What is this "soy solve"?

I wondered this as well and my best guess is that it’s a solvent used for cleaning the brushes.

Soysolv is a bio-based solvent specifically formulated from soybean and other renewable resources that David uses to clean his brushes. soysolv.com He always wipes the solysolv off with his oil used for painting (linseed, walnut) before his applies the paint. David tries not to use toxic ingredients when he paints. Thanks for watching! Kind regards, David and Connie

Love this painting technique David. I'm thinking of buying a workshop online but can't decide which! Do you prime the aluminium as their are conflicting answers on Google. Thank you again for the great videos! ❤

A couple of things I liked near the end of the video were where you mixed what seemed like a very subtle sky colour, only to see how much it popped when placed on the surface near the green, and contrasting the end of the brush sgraffito with adding a little white highlight.

Hi, TrudieTiger70 - Thank you for watching and for writing! I buy them at any art supply store - they are usually watercolor wash brushes (1", 2" and 3") and then chip brushes from hardware stores as well, in all sizes. Good luck with your painting! Kind regards, David and Connie

When I first started painting & studying, I assumed the texture was always created in the final strokes, but as u show here, thats absolutely not the case. Many marks come from underneath or from a combination of layers, lumps & swoops in shape from under while color & value tinted on the surface…..even a scumble on top of that to create atmosphere. All layers working together.

I dont intend to speak for him, but I assume the thumbnail drawing provides 2 opportunities. One, to really consider the large shapes with less detail…..this will test the strength of the composition or expose the lack of. Its still critiquing the idea 💡 Second, to consider & visualize any changes either to improve the composition or (like adding reflective water, widening a sky, raising or lowering the horizon line, etc) to improve the final image beyond composition. Both examined better on paper in place of the mental image. Done quick to avoid relying on detail & color to sweeten the deal so to speak. If it doesn’t work without, no sense pursuing as the added details will not fix the finished painting. Just hoping to help. 🎨✌🏻

HI, TrudiTiger70 - I do try to do quick sketches before I begin a painting to explore some to the composition issues. I may start with a photograph but I will always change relationships and ideas. I don't really know what I will be trying to paint until I am in the process - and that still keeps changing as well! I am never trying to create an actual place or to copy a photo. Regarding the surface - I paint on many different surfaces, from quadruple primed Belgian linen, paper, copper, single sheet aluminum, on enameled aluminum composite panels (white, silver and gold). They are made and marketed as Dibond, CompBond, AlumaBond and the suppliers will vary depending on where you live. You can also check with local sign painting companies. You can call Laminators Inc. to request materials as well. (www.laminatorsinc.com/) Thank you for writing. Kind regards, David and Connie
