Day 6 of our 7-Day Get Stronger in 10 Minutes Challenge will improve your balance and help prevent falls.
This balance workout to prevent falls for seniors features 5 exercises that will help you improve the 3 sensory systems responsible for balance: the visual, vestibular and proprioceptive systems. These sensory systems send information to the brain about where the body is in space. The visual system tells you where your body is in relation to what you see in the environment; the vestibular system tells you the position and movement of your head; and the proprioceptive system provides information about where the body is in space based on muscle and joint activity.
Exercising - including balance and strength training - managing your medications, checking your vision, and making your environment safer are things you can do to prevent falls. April, this was a great balance exercise! So sweet when you were talking about keeping your eyes open while looking up and down, Mochi came in to be petted, along with rubbing on you, before getting in the chair. I thought Aiko was going to lose it when Mochi jumped in her chair as I know she could feel him touching her back. You didn't "Dilly Dally" with the tai chi movements and some yoga April, these are excellent movements for balance and breathing. Thanks for this 10-minute video and for the reminders while marching. 💞 😻🐈

So pleased that I was able to do these exercises fairly easily, and I found that the exercises themselves, along with April's soothing voice giving instructions, helped me to feel more relaxed and calm at the end of a stress-filled day.

Falling (or actually, NOT falling) is one of my concerns. I am going to use this workout daily to aid in riding the train to work. Ability to balance makes a positive difference on commuting. ❤

My eyes opened with that last balance move which I did on a pillow. I do various independent balance exercises about 3 to 4 times a week, but this one truly tested me. Most of the time I kept my knee in place but a few times I held it up for a shorter period. This is one to really work on! I used the first three exercises as a balance "warm up" to challenge myself by doing them with eyes closed. They were a snap. That forward a backward move was brand new to my balance exercise experiences and it took several moves to fully stabilize myself. There's nothing like feeling wobbly to awaken one's awareness that balance improvement takes lots of patience and is vital to safety. Thank you so for this eye opener! The soft pillow balance is not easy but it seems you didn't do too badly which is a good sign that you are close to getting it! @@yes2next have to have a small op yo remove a lump on my parotid gland and a tooth extraction too. Quite a few weeks before wound will be better and months to repair scarring with gels. I hope to continue working out but will need to see how I am for first few weeks. I’ll get there

I’ve fallen twice in the last couple month. Realize it’s my balance that’s off especially when I turn my head while walking. Been doing some exercises for the past few days, and I’ve already improved, but it’s shocking how OFF my balance is.

I did this one and the the Day 7 stretch routine at the end of a more energetic workout yesterday to complete my second-go-round at this challenge. I tried some of the exercises with my eyes both open and closed (alternately opening and closing them for several seconds at a time within each exercise) and was really surprised at how much more difficult it was to maintain my balance with my eyes closed. Why is that?

When you close your eyes, the visual message of your surroundings to the brain is not there. The other senses, in your inner ear and in your muscles, need your eyes to complete the balance message so your balance gets abit shaky! So, for your safety, it's good not to close your eyes while doing balance work but practice and more practice will improve your balance! 👏 Keep it going and keep moving with us! I closed my eyes because you had suggested that as a possible extra challenge for those able to balance well with eyes open (which I was). I wasn't in danger of falling with my eyes closed, but it was much more of a challenge that way than I had expected.

the one ex that you had me standing on my right leg, i couldnt do that due to no strength in my right leg cause of no patella tendon,. but otherwise i really need that, cause my balance is poor,
