I have been looking into going into respiratory therapist for college for about a month now and I'm nervous of whether or not this will be a good fit for me. I've always been family oriented so I like to spend a moderate amount of time at home with my family. I have a 2 year old son and I would really appreciate it if you could give me your opinion on it, is it a good job for someone with children? I noticed in your video you were on night shift is that something that alternates? For instance how often are you on day shift vs night shift. Do you regularly work 12 hour shifts?

Hi. I'm a new subscriber! I'm a hospitalist PA in Washington, D.C. It's an LTAC unit w/an ICU and SNF/nursing home units. I rely VERY heavily on the RTs in our hospital! I was SO intimidated by the mechanical ventilators when I first started (so many settings)!😨 I had come from working in out-patient settings for several years. It was the RT s who helped me understand the vents and trach types/sizes! You guys ROCK! I wish you the best of success in your positive endeavors! I think your RT experience will make you a STELLAR PA student and eventual PA ! You're gonna accomplish great things in this field! 👩🏼‍⚕️👏🏾 I look forward to watching more of your videos! Bye! 😃👋🏾👨🏾‍⚕️

It depends on your place of work. Most places have full time as 3 12 hr shifts (36hr per week) and others go 2 12s and 2 8s. (40hrs per week). But I know at my place of work I made sure to ask if there was opportunity to pick up extra shift and there were! I was always to do more than my originally scheduled hours! If your place of work doesn’t have then you can get a second prn job elsewhere

This may be too personal of a question, but with an rrt job how do you not have enough income to live in a home vs an apartment? I ask this as a mommy of 2 possibly starting rrt school this fall and I am difficulty finding people discussung their income wheras in nursing everyone tells you! I was in a nursing program last year but covid and lack of connect brought me to rrt (:

Hi!! So you definitely make enough to own a home. No question about that! I personally lived in an apartment because I knew I was going back to school and moving for that and was going to be back on loans again so a house didn’t make sense for me! I’m in my first year of RT school and so far I think it’s very possible. If you didn’t do your pre reqs it would be a big NO. But I also did my pre reqs before the program and I can work full time, but I do spend a lot of late nights studying and catching up on sleep on Sundays just to do homework for the rest of the day. Your life will definitely be consumed by work and this program for the 2-4 years. So it totally depends on your commitment to it 😊

I worked about 20 hrs a week while in RT school, but I did not need to financially support myself. I had classmates that needed to support themselves & their fam and worked full time (12 hr shifts on the weekends or a few evening shifts a week). Just be sure to give yourself time to study! If you have a job you can work prn I recommend that so that you can pick up more if it’s a lighter school week, but if it gets busy you can just to the minimum hrs!

Not at all. I am 5’4 and I do not work out lol so I am not strong. The only think you’ll have to do by yourself is push equipment which has wheels and handles. Sam. I've been seriously considering becoming a RT. I live in Ontario Canada. The part I dislike is how bleak the job outlook is. That alone is discouraging.
