I do look forward to your updates as they are very informative and gives me ideas on what to do with my layout. One idea which you could consider for the where your looking to build a housing estate is that you could build instead a castle in the corner. I would have this sitting on high sandstone walls with the 2 tracks running next to them. On the other side you could put a park like princess park. This would allow height for the castle and park to give better depth on your layout. Cheers Mark

+DaveClass47 yep, i just remembered you plan for Waverley inspired park plan for the east end of the layout, and I adore the idea. Part of me wants to beg you to put that next on the to do list, but as I'm dreading, it's in phase 4, so we might have to wait quite a while :( id love to see you have a proper crack at terraforming, with mod roc, rather than the odd bush on the line side. It will add so much and I'm happy that your having a crack at it :) some ideas for the park, it would be great if you can have a gentle slope down from the town, with a gravel carp park at the top. Coming down the hill you can have some open areas, with a father and son playing football, or what would be funnier is a boy looking over the retaining wall with his football by the tracks :) then you could have some trees, with a picnicking family and Mabie a tiny pond with a granny on the beach feeding the ducks. you could get some ornate lampposts that work, and lots more. Name idea? The Royal Dean Gardens.

I class myself as having a decent budget, but now I am allowing myself 2-3 locos a year and perhaps a rake of coaches.....where as before I was spending double, if not three times this. (and that was only 2 years ago). If Bachmann charge £50+ for their MK2F coaches then I am sorry, they will be seeing more Hornby rolling stock on my layout. They are out of touch with reality! AND they keep announcing new products when I have been waiting on a newly tooled Class 158 dmu for 4 years and still nothing in the pipeline!!! As for their MK2F coaches, well the real thing was designed and built in less time than the 00 Gauge ones!! Wake up Bachmann.Sorry for that rant. LOL Dave

Here's an idea for you. Look into getting a wireless drone cam for your layout. It will easily fit on a OO scale wagon at the front of the train for an engineer's view or at the back of the train for a railfan's view around curves. I got one for around $80USD from my hobby shop for my American style narrow gauge railroad. It works with wifi on your smartphone and it records in 720p onto a memory chip. Your layout would be an excellent place to try it out. Trust me. You will have loads of fun with it. Keep up the GREAT work!

Hi Dave. A couple of great 'summary' videos, which although I have watched almost all your uploads, still find I am unable to stop watching! Awesome. All of it... Just a suggestion. You say you are to Ballast the TMD area. I found a couple of suppliers, that are selling 'fish tank' gravel in large quantities (16kg) and it works out much cheaper than eg Hornby or woodlands senics substrates. You can get a wide variety of size of grains and colours. Just an idea, that you may already be aware of...regards Don PS I bought a Proses ballaster, and it is great!

Hi Dave - thanks for the tour video. A great idea. I’ve followed you from the start - it’s amazing how much you’ve done. All well planned and executed. You should be proud mate. A few quick Qs --- What do you do for track cleaning on such a big / enclosed layout? Also do your card / paper models suffer from humidity or temp changes? Keep it up - you’re a top modeller.
@DeanPark8 жыл бұрын
+bartoncessna1 Hi, thanks for your vey kind comments., ok, your Q's....I use a standard Peco track rubber. I also use a CMX track cleaner (From DCC SUPPLIES, around £100!). I fill it with Delux Materials 'Track Magic' and it is hauled around behind a loco, cleaning the track. It works well, especially for tunnels where access is difficult (or impossible!). However you cannot beat the good old track rubber for a completely clean track surface! I use both, cleaning every couple of weeks. I find it quite therapeutic, it takes me about an hour to hand clean the tracks! I also hoover the track from time to time just to get rid of any track rubber dust, general dust and debris.
@DeanPark8 жыл бұрын
+bartoncessna1 On to your second Q:The card models hold up to temperature changes provided you spray coat the paper brick etc in a matt varnish before hand. Also, if they are not glued to the card (if building a scalescenes kits etc) then you can find the paper lifts from the card and ripples....I had this on earlier builds, but this was because I was using cheap spray glue! I now use 3M Craft mount and make sure the brick paper is secured really well to the card. The smaller details, such as capping stones and buttresses have their brick paper attached with Pritt Stick, a good coverage is req. They might not be as durable as a resin kit, but so far I am happy with the card efforts. Cheers. Dave

Hi Dave. Been following you since the very beginning, excellent video's, and really giving me some great ideas on what I want to do with mine, as you've really given me the drive to start one!! out if interest, you have the same W loft structure supports, so was curious what your dimensions are of you Base boards, in depth and length? It looks like you have more depth between the front and back of you Base board than I would get, it's difficult to get a perspective in the videos! Thanks! Darren

Hi mate was wondering if it was possible to use plaster bandage next to the scale scenes retaining wall or would it cause damage at all thanks in advance?
@DeanPark8 жыл бұрын
+Lady of Faith central, Charliebrook Hi...if you get the scalescenes stuff wet it will damage it. However if your paper is well sealed and coated in spray varnish it will hold up 'ok', BUT the main problem is if your water gets into the exposed card edge of the scalescnes wall etc it will soak up the water and blister the card. My advice....woodland scenics shaper sheet, with woodland scenics plaster. There is less moisture with this technique and its less messy. I will be trying it at some point. Hope this helps.

Hello mate, I know what it's like to have a small space, as I have a 6x2 layout myself. What size are you planning to get, because the size can change everything for a railway, comment your rough size and I ca give you a hand, Happy to help, Brad
@jamesdavidson69198 жыл бұрын
im looking at a 8x4 I believe. Its going to be interesting how this will work compared to USA and UK layouts so yea. Thanks if you can help :D
@Electra_12038 жыл бұрын
+JTT James The Trainer Transport Vlogs happy to help mate. With an 8x4 you can fit a Ho European loop, called a continuous run layout, that's what Dave here has, although he's got a whole loft and a very big budget (it depresses him listing all his price totals). Or you could go for something that doesn't have a loop nicknamed end to end. A very good video by intercity82 describes many of the things I'll talk about here, I'll get the link to you. It's personal preference what design to go for, as well as the scale. HO is a tad smaller than Dave's layout, and is good for starters, as it's not to big but also not too small that modelling would become impossible. I would go for Analogue control as DCC may be too expensive for a larger layout. When you want to set the railway is up to you, as well as where. Most choices are personal preference, so be free and build how you want!

What type of signalling do you use? I was thinking of DCC Competes ? Like like you, the hobby is costing me a 'bomb', and that on top of converting my loft to a 'man room' for the hobby. It doe's help that I have partial sight after my 'Stroke but, I am not going to be 'defeated' so, the video's help me as my memory is also 'crap'. You Tube help's alot especially, I have managed to master 'solering' and my ESoC system with it. Keep it coming.
@MrChrisprat8 жыл бұрын
This layout is well I would say amazing but that word just doesn't do it justice. As for the prices I'm having to look at pre owned stock rather then new as its really getting out of control. Can I suggest and I'm no expert but couldn't you have some kind of point on the curve to the fiddle yard on the town scene entrance to give another access to the tracks in that corner and maybe the same if possible the other end? For the town scene I have just seen that scale scenes have released there corner shops that fit in with there terrace houses and they look really cool will probably use then on my layout.
@DeanPark8 жыл бұрын
+Stephen Nunn Do you mean add turnouts on the upper level to the fiddle yard? I not sure if I understand what you mean....but I am intrigued! lol Dave
@MrChrisprat8 жыл бұрын
+DaveClass47 oh sorry I do have trouble explaining my ideas in my head sometimes so I'll try again lol where the track bends round behind the back scene going into the fiddle yard on that curve could you fit a turn out in so it the runs to the tracks in the corner so you can access them without having to move to much about hope that makes better sense?
@DeanPark8 жыл бұрын
Stephen Nunn Ah now I understand. Its all about access....I struggled to fit two curves in there and link it up with the access roads....its a tight squeeze for me to get in there and I struggled to use a hammer to pin the track down as the roof was so close! lol. Dave
@MrChrisprat8 жыл бұрын
+DaveClass47 oh right okay didn't think of that one can't exactly remove your roof to pin the track down lol but I suppose it's more fun like that having to do some real shunting to get rolling stock out.

Hi mate could I ask a favour have put my first two vids up of my layout and was wondering if you could take a look and maybe comment any suggestions you may have thanks again?
@TheAudiostud8 жыл бұрын
I have to agree with your comments made on pricing of Loco's & Rolling Stock! I simply cannot afford to continue with my dream of building a modern image layout as we are a single income family, there is simply not enough money at the end of the month for example Bachman Class 66 £140 + Pack of 4 x 5 100 tonne HHA bogie hopper wagon in Freightliner Heavy Haul livery with sliding end door £630 so thats £770 for just one modern image Train. Thats Hattons discount price and when it comes to shopping on ebay there's no difference in price in fact ebay was dearer! So I live my dream by watching your video's that's until our 6 No: come up and my local Railway Club is not at all appealing to me
@DeanPark8 жыл бұрын
+TheAudiostud My local railway club doesnt appeal to me either....I like my own way too much and sharing a layout would be challenging lol. Its becoming a rich man's hobby...sadly I am not rich, but save like mad to get what I can. I don't smoke, drink (much) or have wild nights out, so manage to save money where I can!

Have you got the APT-E??

+Yate Junction yes, it will feature in the April Model of the Month (if I get time to do it!). Not run it yet, as I am ballasting a section of layout and want to keep it dust free!! Cheers.

Hello mate, been mega busy at work, just caught up with all the vids! Great progress, impressed as always! Agreed re the price of rolling stock, I'm glad I've got all mine! I'll hopefully get a chance to do some stuff on the railway, haven't touched it for months! But nice weather is coming so garage is a bit warmer! What about a prison or an attempt at the castle in some way for phase 4? Keep up the great work, keep impressing your two thumbs down fans that can't help but watch all your videos 😂

I know Dave it's getting ridiculous the price of locos and wagons, I got an email from burevally models today and there was a load of bargains on it so I bought a new class 56 R3052 in rail freight sub sector Richard Trevithick £65 I thought that was cheap

+Jack Brown That's a really great Bargain as the Hornby 56 is a beauty of a loco! I have one, a really heavy, powerful beast. I just refuse to pay £45 for a coach which was £25 two years ago! The price of plastics has gone down with the oil price falling, so the raw materials will be cheaper. Its the Chinese 'minimum wage' that's shafting us....that's what you get for moving British manufacturing abroad!

Prices as they say more detail. I got all my loco and Roaling stock. I got all n 3 voyage £50-80 all full £120 lots of coaches. Got dapol class156 £65 full£100 all a1 condition only duffer was my faul as it was Lima ac and fort it would work on dc so look there. Even get some amazing bargains if u search ie sellers selling ether wrong descriptions thing wrong item so goses less than meant badly described or categorised so not many buyers see it. And most I got new designs or old well under rrp and even some ready weathered or customs. Same with buildings and cottage industries scratch build building other detailing Items. I use eBay now as a starting point for what's out pro made what's out custom and kit bashed a must for price and unusual items

+Matthew Stamp Yeah I actually spluttered into my coffee when I saw the price of them! How are we going to get people in to the hobby when its rapidly pricing itself out of the market? LOL Dave

I don't know why people have hidden fiddle yards. They often look as good as the rest of the layout when covered in expensive rolling stock. Show them off. Marshalling yards and coach storage areas aren't hidden away underground in the real world.

+Without prejudice Hi, if I could have had it on show I would have....but with a hands free controller via my iPhone I can play with the fiddle yard while standing in front of it, while the trains on the layout happily go about their business. Dave
