Though as we have seen and shown here we got something far off the mark. While i sorta liked the game for the fun one could get out of it i would say i had some fond memories of it largely due to being there at the time and to play it with friends. Fun fact: The Ork faction was the only faction not to have melta-weapons, meaning they were severely lacking in primary anti-tank weaponry unlike the other factions. Despite this, the Orks were seemingly the most well-coordinated faction because when players roleplayed as Orks, the biggest and loudest often became the overall commander. The simplistic communications of the Orks lent itself to overall better command and control.

There is an "paradox" in doing something like that... the grander the scale, the more it has to stay close to lore, the more it will cost, and the more that Games Workshop needs to be involved. This is exactly what happened with Total War WH fantasy series. Largest total war game in history AND Warhammer game. Because of this budget is huge and Games Workshop has the final say in almost everything. Be happy though, WH40k total war is confirmed to be in production (will be ready in a couple years at least, i imagine). It's not, Star Wars is an easier sell. It's all ages, it's engrained in pop culture, it's a lot of re-usable assets. Lots of "humanoids with blasters or swords". With 40K, you have a more niche IP that is ultra-violent and grim-dark, so age rating has to start higher. Then, you need to do a lot of custom work per-faction; very few can share skeletons and animation sets. Orks, Tyranids, Marines etc all unique sizes, stances and movement. You have to balance allllll the unique aspects of 40K, like psykers, Eldar magic, Necron movement speed and reanimation. How do uneven team sizes matches work, e.g SM v 'nids? We can say "oh it'd be fun to be a swarm of nids" but the evidence shows that the players who make up the bulk of the numbers, don't tend to agree. Fun for the SM racking up multi-kills, not so much for the frustrated 'nid who keeps getting crushed. So it costs more, have a smaller audience, and has a ton more problems. I can see why it hasn't been done yet personally.

It seemed bizarre to me that they didn't just go for a Battlefront-style game from the get go instead of advertising the lofty goal of being the next Plantside, it seems that if they had always marketed it as Battlefront Style the game wouldn't have been poorly received and may have instead done quite well.
@cursedhawkins13057 ай бұрын
It's mainly due to how the universe of 40K is whenever mention of battles happen, they're always massive in scale from numerous battalions of troops, armor, walkers and even Titans duking it out on a single battlefield, not even EA's Battlefront would be able to support such scales which is why they went with the Planetside 2 advertisement approach, because in some arguments it would have been the best way to sell the IP of Warhammer as a whole, take an example with the Total War games then vision that in the 40K universe.

@cursedhawkins13057 ай бұрын
@@nohrianscum9791 Because the formula wouldn't work for 40K's scale, take the battle on Hoth for example, the Empire only approached from one direction allowing Rebels to prepare defenses facing that direction, replace the Empire with a faction like the Tyranids and you'll expect a much different combat scenario to playout because the Tyranids don't attack from one single direction, they will first recon the target (in this case Echo Base) with either Lictors, Genestealers and Leapers, all three of these can be extremely dangerous in their own right such as Lictors being able to easily infiltrate a base thanks to their own stealth capabilities even for a creature that can be two to three meters in height thanks to their body heat dampeners and Chameleonic scales making the creature be practically invisible to drone and human eyes.

So, this one is a funny one for me, you see, I was a member of the community back in the day, this was *THE* game I was playing back in my teenager-hood, (422 hours on record) I was one of the main people who were running official PVP tournaments (somehow) and I was a member of one of the biggest guilds around and so forth, and honestly, it had an incredibly big impact on my life in more ways then I count. I have some incredibly fond memories of this game and community, and some really not-that-fond, but I don't regret any of it. But if there is one word I could summarize the game with, I think by now it'd be 'disappointment'. What all founders (people who bought the game) were sold on a vision of 40k but Planetside, but Behaviour never really even managed (in my opinion) to get even close to that. Back in the beginning there were promises of story written by one of the best Warhammer writers, a story that will have many really well known main-line characters in 40k (Abaddon the Despoiler, THE main Chaos Space Marine for one.) And worst of all, the more game progressed, in a way, the worse it was becoming, and that's not even because content was bad, but, what was being promised versus what was being delivered was always so incredibly underwhelming. Having *any* real content update put out was a process that took MONTHS. I remember one time where we have waited back in the day for like three months, and all we got was a single map, that wasn't even really that much different from all the maps already in the game. And that is not even mentioning the fact that looking in hindsight, every update was becoming smaller and smaller, with less and less people playing. The game was also so incredibly buggy and barely there, especially with not 'mainstream' factions. As Orks and Eldar were more or less barely played by anyone, so only time to have a match as a member of these two was in the very peak times of population, or when guilds themselves organized things. The fact that as I mentioned, Behaviour barely managed to add any content haven't helped. Eternal Crusade wasn't a 40k Planetside, but Behaviour haven't even managed to turn it into a half-competent lobby shooter with how little content there was. The time I really soured on the game and more or less gave up on it was when it went F2P, and it was all because what felt to me (rightly, it seems) at the time it was a desperate last-ditch money grab, combine that with an item store that felt like it was being a desperate cash grab (I as a founder who paid 60 USD haven't even gotten half of that in the in-game store currency). And the funniest thing was that the entire Ork F2P thing was gave up on, with Orks being reskin of other factions just way more clunky and buggy, even if something amusing to play. (The main Ork guild that I recall was by far most fun group of people to play with, and that comes out of someone who was having 90%+ of playtime on a CSM. And their leader *never* broke his Ork character, ever, he was amazing. Also if I recall correctly supposedly a riot cop in NYPD?) Anyway, to end this rambly mess, I would also add the fact that by far what felt worst to me other then the lack of any content updates was the fact game felt somewhat... meaningless? Look at campaigns for once, we were promised that they will achieve things, and be able to influence things, I was a person who was really into that sort of stuff back then, but it more or less ended up working as 'this faction has this progress bar to fill, and nothing really happens either way if they do it or not'. That combined with barely any content being added, and the fact that community on their own already managed to add more then BH ever did tells you some things. (Terminators weren't in the original game, together with multiple other things.) And that wasn't because people working on the game were hacks, but because according to informations I heard years after quitting the game, the game had at MOST like 6 full-time employees working on it after it launched in early access on steam, and that number being attired the longer the game was out. Eternal Crusade, sadly, ended up mirroring how actual crusades have ended up, not with a blast, but with a whimper.

Omg, I still remember them talking about how they were gonna get this magical out of the box cloud server technology that was gonna make hosting 1000 players simultaneously super easy and blow Planetside 2 out of the water... That all quickly faded after the alpha came out and we saw how bad it was. While some bought into the game, I however, refused to saying it's nothing like that they were promising and that it would more than likely die a painful death the same way that it came in. A pipedream that was never delivered and fueled with empty promises. Having played Warhammer Online, the whole MMO aspect being tagged onto 40k titles leaves a very bad taste in my mouth to this day. And I absolutely LOVED WH-O. I have absolutely *zero* faith in a developer being able to pull it off, ever. Despite the fanbase being there, the developer/investor/publisher interest to properly make/fund a title certainly isn't.

Dark fantasy, on the other hand, is a marriage of fantasy and horror, with a heightened focus on supernatural terrors and the darker aspects of human nature." When you add romance into Grimdark, you remove dread and make hope an attainable goal instead of a delusional pipedream. Turing it from grimdark to edgy fantasy. I joined EC after all was said and done, around 2018 or so. I heard no empty promises, nothing. All I got was the steam reviews sitting at mixed, I did not know a thing about warhammer and in fact, EC was the first I ever seen about it. It was free so I figured... What do I have to lose? And I can say without doubt... I loved the game so dearly! I had so much fun with it, the free version gave me an idea what I would get, and I liked what I saw. So I got the full version and played for years! I remember playing as an Ork and running over 3 other Orks with my Trukk, "Greller" was the Ork name I used, one of the people laughed at what I did, the other was being a humie git and tried to kick me so I told em "NEXT TOIME GET OU' DA WAY YA STUPID GIT!" Such a fond memory. I loved messing around in that game and got Chaos and Orkz to max lvl! (Which was lvl 5 I think?) I'm not dumb tho, I knew the game was unbalanced and broken at times with jank. And sometimes it did feel frustrating. The thing is tho... I did not care! I had a very positive experience with the game, I was sad this game was not getting updates, but still! I knew this would be another classic in my eyes, sitting proudly next to Gear of War, Halo, A Hat in Time, Splatoon, Prey, and so many others! Later I got Space Marine after EC introduced me to Warhammer 40K as a whole, but I did not like it as much, mostly because Chaos and Spacemarines felt exactly the same aside from the armors and spawns, while In EC they all felt different. SM were the well rounded faction and while Chaos could do the same, they were better suited to being specialized! Orkz were just fun with loud guns and a feeling of smiles all around! While Eldar had more run and gun style, glass cannon types, fast and agile, even their Reapers! If not for EC, as flawed as it was, I would not have been a Warhammer fan. Then when the shutdown happened... I was really sad to see it go, at first I accepted it until I thought about it... Why could it not stay? Why did we not get servers for us to host to keep the game alive? Were the devs really spending so much money to keep the servers up or to give us private servers? Then a new and deep hatred for live service games first become clear to me. It was not hard to keep the game alive, but they killed it anyway, even when I paid full price for it which should mean I own it... But nope, I didn't own anything. Then as time went on I saw more games do this to their players. This is a threat to gaming and our fond memories that these companies try to force us in, and we should do something about it to save the games we love. We do own our games, we paid for them, and we should fight for that in anyway we can! These companies cannot just take what we own and shut them down to save a few bucks! We need to act. Now-a-days I like Warhanmer Fantasy better than 40k purely because I found the wonders of Skavendom. "All will fall to Horned-Rat, Yes-yes!" But no matter how much time has passed, I still remember EC. And I dearly hope the modders make the game better than what it was under Behaviour. And dearly hope we all come together to fight for the security of the games we love.

As a very active member of the community early in this game's life (pretty much since it was first announced by the team in a stream), I can tell you there's something that killed this project in the womb that nobody talks about. The game was originally developed in Unity because it was expected to use the Pikko Server technology to allow for lots of concurrent players. I remember one day around the time the original head of the dev team, Miguel Caron, announced his departure all mentions of Pikko Server were suddenly wiped from the website. Around this time it was also announced that the game was switching to Unreal engine (my suspicion is that perhaps the devs wanted to switch to using SpatialOS which is a tech that was in development for Unreal and would've had similar capabilities) and Nathan Richardson was brought in to salvage the project. Unfortunately Nathan never spoke about what happened to Pikko server and instead chose to try to gaslight the community by telling us that we just misunderstood the definition of "massively multi-player". By the time SpatialOS launched EC was already too far gone to make use of it as there was virtually no development to speak of.

Wow, that first blog post that mentioned the game details made it sound like Helldivers 1 and 2. I kinds wish they had made it like that...

I watched to regular update videos and they started really promising. It was essentially supposed to be planetside in 40k, which sounded awesome! Slowly, they kept telling us "we don't have the tech or resources to do this feature we previously promised, so we are cutting it" until the "MMO" eventually turned into a lobby shooter.
@alexwinfield95406 ай бұрын
They didn't have the tech or ability to even do the promised console version, which I stupidly pre ordered, luckily my money was returned

I had no idea this was supposed to be a MMO, I remember it, but remember thinking it was a co-op shooter haha
@aquapendulum7 ай бұрын
The lack of the promised persistent world was what repulsed me against this game. Stripping that away turns this game from a genre with few competition to one with way too much competition.
@qwefg37 ай бұрын
They promised an MMO... Swapped to a shooter... And then took most of the money to fund/make Dead by Daylight... So while the game flopped it was the starter investment needed for their real project as a lot of people had paid those outrageous price tags expecting more.

i was hoping for this game to be like planetside 2 but with a warhammer 40k skin. I was deeply wrong when i put money down and started playing it. It felt like a decent shooter but the overall gameplay feel was more like an arcade shooter but felt stiff and rough. As you usually hope for, "this will get ironed out" but never did and i moved on and forgot about it, until recently i saw they were abandoning the game

Sadly still one of the best games where I could play as an ork. I remembered getting nerfed so many times because the orks were winning too much. Which was just a result of the ork playerbase being so into the faction and having fun.
@BeyondDaX7 ай бұрын
The Orkz are the fun faction for sure
@MrPendalv7 ай бұрын
Orcs was second strongest faction even in the end after all nerfs, because of their high toughness, and very dps weapons. Big shoota op until the end, ace dakka and big cannon were absolutely beyond any balance and won all games for orks before nerfs. Ace dakka still was a better version of autocannon even after nerfs. Also wagh in the end made points swarmed by orks and it was too much for average players to counter

Campaigns within campaigns within campaigns! (Truth: Win X matches in a row. The campaign-map is meaningless bc this is a lobby-shooter.)

18:31 - I kindly want to mention Warhammer 40,000 Dawn of War series 1 & 2 made by Relic Entertainment. They are right now patching up Company of Heroes 3 who knows maybe they would add new campaing & new units & sides as they add to Company of Heroes 2 like 2 German Nazis Army sides, USA Army, & British Army on Skirmish battles on PVP.
@Gontz_Csst7 ай бұрын
This case is very curious when you research a bit deeper into the early development of the game. Much of it was impossible bullshit even for today's technology, but some of it was actually pretty close to what Helldivers 2 currently is, at least that "massive PvE with constant flow of battles between different planets". It was totally impossible for 2016, but I have to Say that I would love to see a retake on that, a "warhammer themed Helldivers 2" ir you Will.

i was a founder, and due to having a bad pc at the moment could not enjoy at its fullest. Also I always expected it to be an upgrade of the SPACE MARINE multiplayer and becoming planetside, that would enought for me. Of course, having more RPG elements would help, but i just wanted to be an Ork warlord in a huge battlefield.

This game had SO MUCH potential. It was heartbreaking to play and see how they just didn't know what they were doing. It was fun for what it was, but it could have been incredible. Such is the problem with 40k games.

One BIG thing left out here is that all the lofty goals and ideas came from a guy called Miguel Carron, that one guy was the only one you would hear talk about the game for years. He sold it as that original idea with all those crazy ideas like a single massive map and f2p Orks until around 2015 iirc he finally left and got replaced by people that realised all his promises were impossible.
@5ilverback_7067 ай бұрын
i think i payed 70 buck founders pack to support. Game was in early access from start to finish, it never was a 1.0. It had some potential but the competency and management from the dev team was annoying through the whole experience. I was literally waiting for all the promises they made in their streams but they shut it down before i even had a chance to pick it up lmao. One of my worst gaming investments and it made me look differently at early access games and supporting them early.

An MMO could never encompass Warhammer 40,000 A 3rd person Battlefront style would have been more reasonable with melee class, range class, anti-vehicle class and faction specialist class. Special class for Commander and Elite would give players some customization and "hero" mechanics. Space Marines (chaos and other factions included) would cost 2 reinforcement tickets and Ork shooting would be random with guns waved around and rockets corkscrewing.

Planetside 2 was the game that made me realize I despise all free to play games. After spending nearly 2 weeks playing I was finally able to unlock a new gun, after using it for a bit I decided I'd buy a third... and I found absolutely zero satisfaction from using it. Playing with the purchased gun felt wrong, and I realized I hate the business model and feel it ruins games. That is still the first and only time I've ever wasted money on a fee to play game. Any free to play game would be significantly better were it reworked and balanced for in-game progression.
@nineviaaware49107 ай бұрын
If you look up any weapon tier list they will always put default guns at B, A or even S, there is literally no reason to purchase most of them even for in-game earned currency. That's not your fault thou, I think its the only game that I can think off where buying new gun is bait for newbies. Also I don't know when they added it, but you can test-use them for 30 mins for free

I played this game and one of the biggest grips everyone had was the combat balance, the Eldar always won no matter the faction they fought as they had the highest DPS guns and melee weapons. It got so bad people stopped picking the sections of the map they were either the attacker or defender of just to avoid the jank.

Eternal Crusade founder/early supporter/whatever we're called here. I went in thinking it'd expand into the Planetside 2-esque gameplay as mentioned, but what I got was Space Marine multiplayer lobbies expanded. Now I loved Space Marine's MP so I did still enjoy it for a bit, especially with the new roles that Space Marine didn't have like Apothecary and Sorcerer (I adored Sorcerer at the time due to DoW2 Retribution's Last Stand mode). It's been so long so I can't really remember, but eventually I got really sick of playing the game. I wanna say it was even before Eldar and Orks were added, but when they were added I came back for a bit and was pretty underwhelmed (though at the time I wasn't a Craftworlds fanboy like I am now). After a bit I only felt absolute disdain for the game until it died a quiet death from nobody wanting to play. Honestly I do wish I could play it again now as I've since gotten into the tabletop aspect of 40k, have gone MUCH deeper into the lore, and enjoy much different things. At the time I think I mainly just liked Black Templars and Iron Warriors cause they looked cool, but now I'd prolly be roaming around as a Blood Angel, Raven Guard, Night Lord, or Word Bearer instead. I'd also appreciate the Eldar a lot more now that I actually understand what those units are.

What a lot of people forget or don't know about is the pre launch drama that was happening on the games forums. Basically players could vote on what space marine chapters could be added but there was blackmailing, vote manipulation, doxxing and bribes being done to get their favorite chapters in game.
