@@suepem This is when they played the Divide and rule policy... India is a pretty secular country with a large number of religious communities coexisting together. Hindu and Muslim being the majority. Now when the uprisings began. the British empire was threathened by the growing protests which were stonger due to the unification of the communities. That is when they imput elements of hatred and distinction between the Hindus and the muslims which actually fulfilled their motive and divided the Indians. The hate between the two communities was so strong that it continued till Independence and finally the partition between Indian and Pakistan Happened ..something that was never supposed to happen.. I hope uh got ur answer

On 26 January 1950, Éamon de Valera was asked to be guest of honour at a reception in Birmingham to celebrate the declaration of India as a republic. At first glance it seemed an unusual choice. The organisers were asked why they had not chosen a fellow Indian. Their response was unequivocal: ‘We and the Irish had strong ties of friendship. We suffered under the same tyranny for many centuries. They had the Black and Tans; we had the massacre of Amritsar. They had de Valera and Casement and MacSwiney; we had Gandhi and Nehru and Bose. They had Sinn Féin; we had our National Congress. They had the IRA; we had the INA. It is not only for the smile and the shamrock we know Ireland. It is for the toughness of their leaders and for the rebellion in their hearts.’ Greetings from Ireland 🇮🇪🇮🇳

During British rule, there were widespread famines in 1769, 1782, 1791, 1837, 1860, 1865, 1868, 1873, 1876, 1888, 1896, 1899, 1905, and 1943. An estimated 55 to 60 million Indians died in these famines. If mass murder were a sport, this would be a bigger score than Hitler, Stalin, and Pol Pot put together.

Shalom Joseph Educate me. How could all these famines have been avoided? Where is the list of famines before or after Home Rule? There were 14 famines in India from the 11th - 17th Centuries over a period of 2,500 yrs long before Britain came to India at the invitation of the Raj. Go peddle your hatred elsewhere and complain to the SE Asian climate.

tigressnsnow It must be very nice to write it in the comfort of your home drinking a bit tea isn't it. My grandfather told me stories of the great British empire treating people like bugs and how difficult life was at that time. Just denial of all the historical records and evidence is not what I expected from today's British people. If they aren't sorry for what predecessor did in the past then we may forgive them but god won't.
@tigressnsnow
@tigressnsnow 6 жыл бұрын
Sudhakar Nayak Firstly don't presume I drink tea😀 Empire builders don't destroy they build up. How was life for Mughal India before the British East India company came in the early 1600's? Were there hospitals? Was there disease and famine? What did your ancestors do to earn a living long before your grandfather's time? Were your ancestors wealthy? What was the economy like? Did India exist as a nation with one common language? Britain pays aid annually to India of £280 million. By 2007, India was the world's largest recipient of aid from all over the world. In 2010, it received £54 billion from other countries, hard earned tax payer monies. The Indian economy is India's responsibility not the responsibility of the world. It has had 70 yrs of independence and still it begs. Churchill knew that India wasn't ready for Home Rule yet when is a good time to let go? India was still immature as a new nation and its leaders always arguing. Blaming dead people who lived in the 17th - 20th Century for India's plight today isn't very practical. Britain invests huge amounts of money in India eg 2010 £1.8 billion. Shashi needs as a politician to stop his hate filled biased book selling tour and go home and clear out the corruption endemic to India for centuries. Shashi should have a positive vision for India and be a part of it through action. He should think of all the great things he could be doing and leave a legacy he can be proud. Maybe then like Churchill his country will give him a State funeral in his honour.

India has "less" active nuclear warheads but can stockpile a 1000 more within months, since we have large reserve of Uranium, Oh, and we also have the largest reserve of Thorium. Whole Uk comes under India's nuclear missile range. We have robust satellite technology and infrastructure, which can check every movement of Uk. India has young lucrative market for foreign investors, unlike Uk. I don't know how is Uk more powerful, hmm NATO ??? LoL. Uk has trade deficit with India, we don't wanna loose that. If the Britishers even had an iota of shame they would have disowned Churchill, instead he is deeply revered. My father lost his two brothers and his father in the Jallianwala Bagh massacre, he was just 3. I had expectations from Cameron when he visited the site to pay homage to the victims that he would tender an apology, but he didn't disappoint being a slave to the throne he is fulfilling his masters commands. I agree the that the present generation of brits don't owe us any apology, but to dismiss the atrocities of the empire and not even including it in the history books is pure evil. This is why of late Indians are insensitive to the terror attacks taking place in UK, they feel brits had it coming to them

@@tigressnsnow 50 Billion Pounds? In what universe? I believe the aid sent in by the UK to NGOs in India was around 250 million GBP? Besides, UK has stopped sending aid to India. This is after the Indian government categorically denied any need for such aid, and an elected Member of Parliament addressing viewers in the UK and referring to such aid as 'lower that India's Fertiliser subsidy aid'. The purpose for such a book is simple. The world mourns for atrocities of notorious dictators and in the same breath, regard people like Churchill as some sort of paragon of humanity. The world berates Myanmar (rightly so) for casting out their people, and fails to acknowledge the atrocities they themselves have perpetrated on people living their lives in distant lands like India and the various countries of Africa.

Britain got tea and curry and India got a unifying national language and the foundations of its present day infrastructure such as its laws, government not to mention its education, Christianity, health, rail, post and civil service systems. They also have membership to the greatest global club with all of its privileges, the Commonwealth of which a third of the world's population belongs. Many also have British blood from intermarriage and centuries of descendants related to British people, Anglo Indians. They're family.

Divide and rule policy is what british did to India. British tried to break India in princely states and divide India on the basis of religion. They were partly successful to do that but soon Indians realised that they should stick together in order to fight against britishers. So dont take the credit for unification. Indians united because of your attrocities and second class treatment on their own land.

Ehmmm.... I support the fact that I'm not responsible for what Churchill and the Brits of that time did to India but the host appears to be defending said colonialism. That stuns me. Acknowledgments of the wrongs inflicted upon India are essential! Even if the innumerable concept of reparations aren't acted upon, at the very least apologies are to be made and lasting partnerships in good faith maintained. Just acknowledge it. That's a good start, denial and justification are unacceptable.

Obviously I agree with the man being interviewed; he is certainly right in saying that the UK did much more wrong than it did right when it came to colonising India, and the citizens of the UK should certainly be aware of the problems the colonisation caused in India as well as the profit it brought to our country. But what I do not agree with is that British people should be apologetic for this colonisation. The Germans for example committed countless atrocities in WW2 (and the UK did during the colonisation), however I would never ask the German people of today to be apologetic for it - they had no say, yet face criticism and prejudice for the event. As Brits we do not, and should not, because like with the actions of other nations, these things happened a long time ago and were not our choice. I agree that our nation committed terrible acts during this time in history, but not that the British people of the 2020s should be apologetic and act as if we are responsible.
@taintabird23
@taintabird23 3 жыл бұрын
The German state has already apologied for what their ancestors did in WW2 AND they went further and apologies for their imperial behaviour in their African colonies long before that. They have a established a museum to their imperial past to teach modern Germans about the nature of European Imperialism. The British have made no such acknowledgement to their past and have yet to come to terms with the true nature of British imperialism. An acknowledgement can be as powerful as an apology.

@@taintabird23 that's fair. As a Brit I now realise how bad our country was in the past, despite having to find this out for myself! I was taught about the Empire at school a little but not about the countless atrocities. Much respect goes out to the Germans for that. The UK now must do what they have done and admit that the Empire was in large part a disgrace

Unfortunately, in history, one must often "start" at the consequences of own actions, in order to point out mistakes which happened along the way. In the big picture of things, spotting mistakes as a contemporary witness is far more difficult. True today. True at any point in history. Furthermore, in order to "avoid history repeating itself", one must *first* admit that mistakes were made. Also own mistakes. Because, according to biblical logic: only by "removing the splinters from own eyes", can we avoid "sowing seeds", which we all "reap" at some point. *So here is how European reign and domination of the world ended in 1945, and a few subsequent years (short version, longer version below):* At the end of WW2, the USA (American Century) refused to honor an important treaty Western Allied leaders had made in Quebec. A treaty/agreement almost nobody had ever heard about. With that, Washington DC intended to become the sole nuclear power, and not share (as promised per treaty) nukes with London/GB/Empire. By doing so, the new alpha stated that it did not want an equal power at eye level. They wanted a "junior partner". And with that, they became the new alpha. Rule Britania, repealed and replaced by the American Century. Pax Britannica, replaced by Pax Americana. Rule the Waves? Let's put it this way. No more "Two Power Standard". Who had "the bigger one"? :-) Washington DC (The American century) was in a position to "tear up a scrap of paper" and not care what anybody in "old Europe" thought about it. Washington Internationalism/The American Century, the other "new power" rising across the Atlantic, whose position was basically *"observe calmly, secure our position, cope with affairs calmly, hide our capacities and bide our time, be good at maintaining a low profile, and never claim leadership.”* It's interesting to google that quote. Of course it refers to a timeless political strategy, which is true at all times, and explains a lot about the headlines we see in the papers today. Anyway... *Re. the concept of "being able to spot an anomaly" as history unfolded forward. Of course, it does not "happen backwards", but there is a timeline.* Machiavelli's "balance of power". Of course Machiavelli didn't invent the concept of "balance of power", but was one of the first to put it down in words in western literature. *Would a true Machiavelli have ignored the noticeable change/shift in the "balance" of the powers at around the turn of the Century? (1900)* Note that the reality of the time was that while GB/Empire and the rising USA were roughly equal in "power" at the time (around 1900), only one of these 2 "powers" had the potential to hang on to her power as the world noticeably changed around the contemporary witnesses at the time, and at least for wise leaders, also in the foreseeable future (Washington DC as the firmly established soft power "master/hegemon" in the Americas, vs. London the "still master" of an outdated 1,000+ year old colonial model). Would a true Machiavelli have snuggled up to a power without being able to "leverage/hedge" any deal (treaty/accord/agreement/etc.) it made? Would a true Machiavelli have relied on "appeals to emotion" (like "everybody speaking English") to ensure a dominant position? Last time I checked, "snuggling up" without also being in a position to "leverage" and/or "hedge" a deal, wasn't in the book (The Prince). Re. the concept of "how history unfolded aroun the turn of the century, around 1900": reality (aka "the truth") created an anomaly in the algorithm on the timeline of history. Stalin spotted it, and he intended to imitate it. I'm sure he identified the "weak links" of Western European domination set up by Versailles by the "Big Three", and other post-WW1 treaties, without Moscow being consulted. The early *Communism in One Country* advocates in Moscow, soon to become World Communism: "Observe calmly, secure our position, cope with affairs calmly, hide our capacities and bide our time, be good at maintaining a low profile, and never claim leadership." I'm sure he read a lot...

As a Cameroonian (West African) whose country saw thousands of its people forcibly shipped to the America's by Europeans in the 19th century, I am greatly impressed with Mr. Tharoor's well-informed answers to the host of this show. To make it sound like colonialism is something that the colonized ought to be thankful for is a moral disgrace. I am resident in South Africa and am often appalled that Helen Zille,a local white politician has sometimes made comments to suggest that colonialism was a good thing. And it's hurtful because she and her people were not subjugated!
