As a 23 year old medical student that was always homeschooled from a single mom who was a doctor. All I can say is Preach. You can always find a way to homeschool if that is what your heart is telling you. I grow up being told by other people I wouldn’t be able to go to college blah, blah, blah and now am 3 years into my medical school career.

This! I homeschooled all three of my kids from the get go. My oldest is a lawyer, my daughter is in chiropractic school and my youngest just graduated high school with his two year college degree. You can homeschool through high school and they can not only go to college but also graduate from grad school.

I went to public school and one thing that I didn't like looking back was the toxic culture of comparison among students even in elementary school. I was a mostly A and B student but I, and many of my peers, could never appreciate my own acomplishments because "the smarter person in my class got a better grade" and I think this really took away from my love of school. So I think a big pro of homeschool is how individualized it can be and how your kids can soley focus on their own progress and not worry about what others are doing.

I'm not sure how much you'd actually get away from that in homeschool- my older two are very competitive ;) I do think it can mediated better for younger ones, but the reality, in my opinion is that life is full of comparison- both in personal life and work. Learning to manage that and not let it steal your pride in your own hard work is something most adults still struggle with. :(

I am entering my second year of college. One of my best friends is a homeschooler I met last year. He's a senior in HS this year taking nearly all college classes. We are in clubs and activities together. We go out with friends. He's very polite and social. He's the most well-rounded kid I've ever met. Definitely more involved than I was in high school.

Forced association is literally the best way to describe my Highschool experience haha! I met all of my true friends outside of school (in summer camp, through hobby’s etc.) and kept those friendships until now, whereas Highschool friendships just kinda faded away after we didn’t see each other naturally anymore because it just weren’t the people that were on my wavelength!! I was in public school all my life but homeschooled kids aren’t just at home 24/7!

Socializing is not even allowed in school. 🤦🏻‍♀️ When my oldest three were still in public school I would go to eat lunch with them and the whole class would be on silent lunch(not allowed to talk during lunch at all) because one kid acted up and ruined it for everyone. This happened literally every single time I went to eat with my kids. My oldest son got in trouble everyday for talking to his peers in the car rider line at the end of the day. They were never allowed to talk to each other or go to the bathroom when they needed to. My youngest son got a bladder infection from not being allowed to go when he needed to. Just a few of the many things that happened that gave me the final push to start homeschooling 8 years ago!

When people say homeschooling is expensive, do you think it’s because one parent has to be in the home, not working a money making job? That’s what I’ve always wondered; it could be really hard for some families to have one of the parents stay home. I’m just curious.

Yes and no. There are many working parents who also homeschool. It's amazing once you dive into some of the groups and communities out there, how diverse it is, and how many different walks of life people are coming from.

Aw I love this video. I was homeschooled throughout my entire education and I think you're spot on. While I felt left out a bit in middle school (we were not involved in any homeschool groups) I turned a new leaf and LOVED being a homeschooler in highschool. It was so cool to be done with school in 3 or 4 hours. I made every church event, every sports event, held a real job and could stay out late and had babysitting jobs no one else could take. I had far more time and money than any of my friends and traveled to Mexico twice as well as went on several in-country missions trips. I had visited more of our country than most of my friends, and I did all of that with considerable less stress than the people around me. I would not say homeschooling is "better". I just wish people would quit putting it down over things like "socialization" and just let people live their lives.

But he saw a homeschooling family and their kids how they talked to adults in a very mature way and I slowly convinced him and now he is an advocate! I’m going on my fifth year! Thank you for making this video Angela! It is definitely refreshing to see people shedding light on the reality of homeschooling. I was homeschooled all the way from kindergarten to 12th grade, before going to a public University. I'm 24 now, and just finished my Masters in Clinical Social Work. My homeschooling years taught me to be a self starter, independent learner, and how to time manage which not only prepared me for college and graduate school, but is now even helping me in my job as a therapist.

I was homeschooled from third grade to eighth, then went to public high school. Later I went to a four year college and swam at a Division 1 school. I have been a NICU nurse for three years now and will be starting nurse practitioner school in January. I can honestly say that homeschooling helped me throughout my academic career because it taught me to self study. If I didn’t understand something, I learned to approach it differently to try to solve a problem. I learned time management skills because I studied at my own pace. It still makes me laugh when people find out I homeschooled. Everyone always seems so surprised that I act “normal”.

I homeschooled both of my daughters, both graduated with honors when they received their Bachelor's degree. I have been homeschooling my grandson for all of his schooling. He's 14, with 10 college credits, 3 black belts in Taekwando and has been an assistanting in teaching. He serves at our church. He can talk to adults on any subject. Most kids today only know videos. Homeschool works.

One of your points is why my husband and I decided to homeschool our kids. We both went to public school throughout but both felt it was lacking. I often felt stuck or like I couldn't advance because I didn't understand things. Plus my parents weren't involved at all with my schooling beyond making sure I (and my siblings) were physically present at school. It's so exciting to find out how your child learns and to help them advance in areas they're interested in.

I loved homeschooling my 1st grader for half of the year. But we ended up at a small co op school because she kept mentioning how she wants to see her friends every day, play with them and just be surrounded by peers her age on a daily basis. I tried taking her to different activities and she was around other kids, but what she needed was deeper friendships. Literally the only reason she’s not homeschooled anymore. She’s way more advanced compared to her peers, but much happier around them. I’m glad I tried homeschooling though! I really wish I could have still homeschool her.

We homeschool in an RV and our homeschool room is outside!!! I do think the way a lot of people want to homeschool can be expensive but if your smart you can make it work. Buy used, reuse for younger kids, sell old curriculum. For us the money is a sacrifice that's worth it just like some would choose competitive sports

Thank you so much for answering these myths! I constantly get these questions, too, and my other homeschool friend and I get so tired of it, LOL! We homeschool our 3 boys, ages 12, 10, and 6. I left an abusive first marriage. Our world was insane. Part of what gave my kids a sense of security was having their homeschool to fall back on. I’m happily remarried to an awesome man that is totally on-board with homeschool! My kids have adjusted amazingly, despite some weeks not being able to do school, due to sickness, visitation, etc. They love to talk to everyone they meet, and we love our local library! And I love seeing how creative they are! I love how you answered these myths. Very balanced! I went to public school, 1-5th grade (I was homeschooled 6th-12th), and I remember kids there that were shy, struggled, or were outgoing, etc. It really matters how they’re raised and the home they live in. Just discovered your channel. Thanks so much for making this video! (P.S., I didn’t technically “finish” my high school homeschool. But I had a 4.0 GPA my freshman and sophomore year of college. I graduated Cum Laude, with a Bachelor of Science in Music Education. 😊 So don’t give up, homeschool parents!) God bless you❣️

I’ve done 11 years in the public school system (two more to go!) and absolutely love it. Personally, being home all day would not have been the right choice for me individually; I was the shy, quiet kid, and I wanted absolutely nothing to do with activities outside of school (dance, playgroup, etc.) when I was little. We don’t do church either. School was something that forced me to be around other kids, and for me, that made me break out of my shell a little bit. I can totally see why that wouldn’t work for some kids though. Great video!

All of these comments are so true and the high school part is so so so so true. I also agree the college part gets questioned. Honestly, not everyone has to go to college to be successful. I wish people would worry about their own life and children. A person's success is not determined by the school they went to, but their own determination and will. I grew up shy and introverted because anything I said I saw the teachers snicker. It made me quiet. Then they complained that I was too quiet. My report cards for each quarter said I was quiet. I am quick to speak up if I feel like something is wrong and yet the constant talkers don't. Anyway, I'm tired of people trying to make me doubt myself with homeschooling.

If anyone REALLY understood what homeschooling is they would worry more about the mom getting socialized! I am a mom of 3 home school graduates- I spent so much time making sure my kids were involved in sports, work, group activities, travel etc that I didn’t have much time to connect with MY friends, or have any activities myself! I don’t regret a minute but that whole socialization issue makes me crazy when I hear it! My kids could relate and communicate to anyone of any age from the time they were very small. My kids have been super successful in college and in life. Even though some told us that our kids would never go anywhere because we homeschooled them!

I just want to thank you for this video. I’m 43 and was homeschooled from 4th grade onward. And I was always getting bombarded with hurtful remarks from people who thought myths like these were true. I know where I live the national curriculum is all online for you to access freely so you can see what your child is learning in their different grade levels. And! I know of a great resource website called teachers pay teachers (not sure if it’s just Australian). Where there are resources made by teachers, that are either free or very cheap!! They’re usually very well tried and tested too. Also maths manipulatives?! Hello nature! Use sticks, leaves etc. there is sooo much out there, just get creative!!

One of my concerns with homeschooling is that we often don't know what we don't know and when your main source of education is the same person for 13ish years there can be a lot more potential for blindspots. Yes I know that some families do co-ops or go to conferences so that they can learn more but not everyone is going to do that.

One of my favorite aspects of homeschooling is I get to choose who my children learn from. I think of myself as a facilitator of learning rather than their one and only teacher. I can find the teachers/tutors/coaches/co-ops I like and match them with my kids. Another myth is that a homeschool parent has to do all the teaching of everything. The community and freedom priceless.

I went to a public school in Texas, I legit don’t remember nothing besides ONE class (medical microbiology) because she made it her priority to make sure I was learning in her class. Besides that nope not much, my history teachers were always football coaches who had to teach so they always knew very little and scrambled their way through teaching us. I also flirted my way through a few classes 😅 😫 so I learnt very little in those classes. I’ll definitely be homeschooling my kids in the future 🙌🏽

I think some of the socialization question comes up alot because of the sensationalism of it in the media, with naive homeschooled kids getting into trouble, going wild, being the "weird" kid. Its one of my biggest pet peeves. I was homeschooled and I'm definitely an extrovert and was very much a social butterfly as a kid. I had no issues making friends and i wasnt naive.

I needed a program to keep me in order, I went with Connections Academy. This is a free online school, they send you all the books, material and computer and my children loved it and thrived. This is an accredited online homeschool program and even have a big graduation ceremony for the seniors in your state. They have meet ups every week, if you want to go to the zoo or other places, we would post and let parents know, to see if anyone wanted to meet up. My children made their best friends in homeschooling and yes, with this program it can revolve around how you want it. Side note - if my husband wasn’t a math and science prodigy (lol, he got perfect SAT) I don’t know how we would have been able to get through physics and upper advanced math. I was out with these subjects after grade 10. They have teachers for every class and live classroom for each subject once a week and the teachers are there to help.

I know people have said 'Well you won't home school them in high school' and I just never understand it. I was in public school all though school. k-8 was great. High school was a nightmare. And not because I didn't have friends or I was bullied but because I was so anxious I couldn't learn anything and I just scraped by and felt like I was dumb. My best friend will still tease me about this one time I was doing a presentation with her freshman year and burst into tears and handed her my note cards for her to finish. I wish I could have been homeschooled for high school because I think being able to not be anxious while trying to retain information would have been ideal. Every kid is different though! You never know.

The other one I get constantly is "I do not have the patience!" This one cracks me up, because they think we have some sort of gift for patience with our kids. The truth is, I do get tired of my kids. I do get frustrated, but its knowing when to walk away for a few minutes to gather my thoughts that truly helps. So no, I do not have more patience than the next person. I have just learned when its time to change gears (or go hide in my bathroom, lol).

My daughter went to public school for kindergarten but has been homeschooled ever since and I do it as a single mom. She was the kid that always got in trouble for talking because the work was too easy for her and she was always done quickly. She got bored and started talking. She has excelled in homeschool even skipping 6th grade because she placed in 7th-8th grade for her subject placement tests. She is the most well-rounded, self motivated kid I know. She makes friends in our neighborhood along with on her competition gymnastics team and at church. She already has plans for dual enrollment during high school. I also love that she doesn’t have the pressure to fit into any certain group in school. She is completely herself and is able to be confident in that. Homeschool was truly the best decision I ever made for her!!!

I have a friend and her two siblings who were home schooled while we were growing up. I'm 36 years old so you could imagine all the technology we did not have then. We met because my brother and her brother were in cub scouts. So there's exhibit A for those who feel that home schooled kids don't make friends and don't learn to socialize. All three of them went to college, all three of them have excelled in life.

I often hear “I’m not disciplined enough to home school my kids. I know I’d just let them do whatever they want.” I’m never sure how to respond to that. Saying “Well, it sounds like you need to work on your parenting skills” or “Hmmm...your kids must be delightful” don’t seem like responses Jesus would give 🤷‍♀️😁

As a young wife (and homeschooled graduate!) who’s planning on homeschooling my future kids, all I can say to this video is SO MUCH YES!! I can’t tell you how many times I’ve heard and been told these excuses or jabs...there’s so many different ways to school anyway in this day and time, it’s amazing that people can still want to find fault with it!

Thank you so much for this video! I so wish I could homeschool my daughter, but it's highly illegal in Germany. I think it's the only European country which has a compulsory school attendance. Unfortunately, there also aren't a lot of alternatives for private schools, unless you live in a big city. I still try to have as much influence on my daughter's education as possible and do a lot of things with her.

I'm not disagreeing with you at 6:00 but I will say that all educators have at least a bachelor's if not a masters in their specific subject. To be eligible to teach you are trained in 1. Your subject (math, science, art, english, orchestra ...etc) but also 2 (and this is far more important) you're trained in pedagogy. Which are literally classes on how to teach, how to connect material with what students can comprehend

this is so good to listen to, thanks alot. i have a 6 year old son and my wife is one of the few people ive ever met that enjoyed school growing up but i hated it and always wanted to homeschool. She often says things like - how will be make friends, be socialized, kids need to be with other kids etc and its nice to hear people who have been there and done that dispel some common misconceptions.

Angela,I could just hug you for this video. People gave me a hard when I was homeschooling, especially my son, since I home-schooled him exclusively. I kept having to explain that he has a lot of friend,go to the library homeschooling events, the park and other events. Every year it was the same beating down. We were not always at home learning, yet they try to make it seemed as if I was a bad mom for not putting him in school. My older ones wanted to be exclusively taught because they had a lot of public school negative issues going on that I had to deal with as a single mom, and it was very stressful and depressing for myself and then. At that time I told myself that I would not be able to do it,I don't know if I can do it,and I had no resources for information until some years later a magazine came out about homeschooling(a student was going from homeschooling to college). That was my light that went off and I decided that I can do it , but I would continue with the older ones in public school and teaching them when they get home each day, but my son would be exclusively taught. Later in life I placed him into public school and gained all of the negative issues I avoided for years.😣 All the years that I homeschooled my children I learned along with them, especially my son since he was exclusively home home-schooled, so I got into more of the subjects with him than I did with my older ones. When I later returned to college for the second time it helped me because I was always reading and learning the latest things that was out there educational wise. Thanks again for this video it really helps and I'm going to share it with those who are clueless and hopefully some of those who were on my back will see it and realize they owe me an apology.😂😂😂Nah! (No chance of that).😆

You and CR are so inspiring I admire the way you bring up your children. Whenever I struggle with parenting I say to myself what Angela and CR would do in this situation? My daughter is only 4 months but I may consider homeschooling her because of you and your amazing family. All the best guys!
