@@DecimalTenths 99% of the cambelts I do are with the engine in situ, so there's no other way of really doing it reliably and easily. I also can't really do the method of slackening off the damper, so I opt for gaining slack over the waterpump lengths and sliding of over there. There's always multiple ways to cook an egg though! I like your marker for a crank tooth lining up with the casting in the cover, that's a neat little trick. I just rely on the flywheel TDC marker, and never use the covers really, too much room for error on those like you say

Wanted a 1.8T since they were new while I was in high school around 2001, finally picked up a Jetta with 150k miles that needs a clutch so I'm putting in a clutch from Southbend that can handle some upgrades like a k04 and a tune, probably injectors 🤔... There's something special about finally getting the exact thing so badly wanted at that high school stage. Thanks for sharing your knowledge and the fun you're having! ALH TDIs are even better IMHO, but there are things about a gas engine with a turbo, and such a fantastic one the VAG 20V is!

Nice! I’m just finishing up assembling my stroker this weekend. Gonna bolt down my AWWhead(w/ARP studs), timing gear(ARP bolt), water pump, PS/AC/ALT., etc. I did also go with a set of Schrick cams(higher lift & longer duration. Using a Garrett GTX3071R on a FullRace exh. manifold, IE intake, monster CTS FMIC, AEM380 fuel pump. Thanks to ALL YOU GUYS that post these video’s, incredibly helpful! Neil 👍👍

I did my timing belt about a year ago... And I cursed and sweared for about half an hour on why the f*** my belt was so tight and I couldn't put it on, WOW so simple.

Another cracking vid. Id say a decent frame turbo with quick responce. The extra displacement from thr stroka motaa will help spool a larger frame. And cams will help it breathe up top.

I'm running a Ball bearing garrett T28 with bosche 440cc injectors in my b5 a4 quattro, it's a 2001.5 and sure you already know this but it's the awm block with stock wideband ecu. I'm only running 18 lbs of boost but it spools up muuuuch faster than the gt30 I used to have

Another amazing video Nick, recently subscribed and have been binge watching your vids 🤣 love the 1.8T engines myself but don't dive into them as much as you do but would be interested to do that. If you could do the video on a head rebuild that would be amazing as well as the dos and don'ts of rebuilding an engine cause hoping to use your vids in the future to have a crack myself. Great video Mate you have clearly done too many of these in the past. Im surprised you don’t have a bigger following. While your waiting on Spencer to be released perhaps you could dig through your archives and find us some of your S3 footage! And if i was you id go for power you can put down rather than boast about....

Just wanted to say that i subscribed a few days ago and I’ve watched all the “stroka motta” build videos a few times now and they are first class mate. I was considering rebuilding the engine in my Skoda Octavia vrs, AUQ engine, but not to that extent. Was thinking along the lines of a forged top end rebuild like the head you have from your A3. However it’s made me think differently now and gave me knowledge as to how to tackle it and what to do with the car idea wise. Also looks a great way to eeek more power and reliability from the already reliable engine. Made me think it has. Also love the content and look forward to the end result. Especially the turbo and what you will need to run the xtra power and so on.

Hello pal, cheers for the positives 🤘. With regards to.any engine build id suggesy that the specification is always dictated by the goal. Too many people over build and spend money they don't need to, or underbuild and skimp on areas they should really have concentrated on. Pretty much why I made the buikd soec video and set my goals. They've long gone out the window, but then the engine was always going to be Overbuilt in spec to aid reliability on track. It all changes out there where the use is completely different to road use. Always up to discuss it if you want to get into it. And cheers for watching. Nick

Would it be ok if i send over an email to you? My optimum goal is for reliability but extra power. If i can achieve around the 400hp 350lbs torque mark approx I’d be happy. But that’s just a guesstimation for an achievable goal.

G25-550 or bigger yet G25-660 would be mad in the little VW. The bigger displacement and the newer tech from Garett really don't have to worry about spool times. just my 2 pennies.

i have pic up a lot from your vids but i would love a vid for first timers, i will do 1.8t in a near future, thinking reliable 300hp, rods, valves, maybe spring, NA cams and a hybrid k03s, limiter factor will be the turbo, will max it out but i want motor for more so if i want tu upgrage turbo for bigger Hp my motor can allready take it, keep up the good work ;)

I would say you need at least a G25-660 to realise the potential of the engine. You don't need to run it flat out all the time. I would definitely change the intake cam at least. I changed my BAM intake to an APG intake and gained 50bhp, further up the RPM band but made the car so much quicker.Kept the BAM exhaust cam. www.ttforum.co.uk/forum/download/file.php?id=422135&mode=view

Inspirational work, getting my own parts list together, convert a 1.6 8L to 2.0 20V on Haltech :) Go for a G25, lots of good stuff with little bad stuff... Who needs financial planning, thats what banks are for :P

Really enjoying your videos and this is really encouraging me into forging the 20vt engine I have fitted to my Corrado. I am planning on running a bbt k300 so other than rods what else would suggest I fit to give my engine a refresh? Would like to see your engine builders guide video👍

You’ve got to push the engine.... we want to see what the engines are capable and like as a stroker. Do a little turbo like you said is cool but not very interesting. We want to see stuff we can’t afford or do ourselves. Something to dream about.... a monster would have my interests a lot more. Big Power Turbo which will give you a balance of Top end and low down torque.... G25-660 or the one beneath?

Nick I’m going to post you a spec of Connor Bucks build few years back. He had all the forge build done by PSI tuning who mapped my car. He’s running a G2871rs with sem inlet etc etc think it was last at 426bhp

I’m currently building for a 1.9 G25-550 set up which I’ve heard nothing but good things about however it’s costly !! Before this I ran a tfsi 064 hybrid which had great spool & made 360/360, could be fun in a lupo round the track ! On the other hand it seems a shame to fit any small frame turbo on a engine that’s been built to the high spec yours has ! Decisions Decisions ...

A gt2871r turbo is what im thinking of going with along with stroking it on e85. Id love to see you do it so I can do the same!

Go with a K04 turbo... i am also doin' a 1.8T 20V build and will add an Audi TT K04 connected to a sprinter intercooler..stuffin into a MK2 jetta

I’m loving the knowledge I’m getting from watching the 18t stuff and would love to see you build a large port head or small port and in your opinion witch one is better?

Cheers mate. Pretty much all depends on your goals. Up to 400bhp then a small port head is spot on and torque onset is sooner. Large port head comes into it's own closer to 500bhp where more flow can be realised and more timing advance can be ran. In nearly every way this engine is 'overbuilt" for my goals.

I'd go with a smaller turbo and squeeze the max out of it. Less lag is better for the track. Maybe even a twin scroll turbo?

Hi loving the channel mate. Love the stroke her build too 👍🏾😂. Any tips as to parts that can be got from scrappers such as heads, crank, pistons ? Planning a build with forged rods for my tt 180. Cheers

Heh Nick good vid again pal. I like the fact on the aeb head was it? About not having to run the washer behind the belt tensioner. Turbo I'd either roll with a g25 550 or possibly the 660. But being realistic. It's going in the frog so you have to thing about power to weight ratios and controllability 500+hp in a lupo. You would have brass balls to open her up fully. I think personally I'd be looking at 400hp as a Max figure bud. 🤘

You've pretty much hit the nail on the head David, the on track target is still unchanged really...350bhp. Doubt I would need or be able to use any more. Beauty of a modern turbo like a G25 is the ability to hit the goal, and maybe have an all out shits and giggles map too. Running it detuned wouldnt sacrifice any response...

G25-660 reverse rotation would be a good turbo. Best of spool and powwaaaaa

Hi Nick good work mate I run a hybrid on my mk1 s3 but it is a lot heavier still seems rapid to me. Lupo is a light car so will be much faster. k04 hybrid if you are not going big turbo if you do gt25 seems to have good reviews for better drivability it just depends what you want stock k04 on a stroker is a bit of a shame if you ask me .

Sweet. My old S3 was big turbo so I wont be going small on this one either. The big question is how big...?😂. G25 range is favourable, not that they are available atm. We'll see what happens when the world calms down a bit

Great series Nick. Thanks for sharing and the time that you have spent on them all. On your do's and don'ts, would you consider a few links to the parts and tools you have used? Of particular interest to me is that tensioner you fitted. What's the roller that goes with it? I have an IE manual kit but like that one too. Thanks, Gavin. 🙂

Hi Gavin yeah that's the plan, wrap it all up with info, links etc. The tensioner is an lpsfab one : www.lpsfab.com/product/lps-vw-audi-1-8t-20v-manual-timing-tensioner And the timing belt kit is just a standard INA kit. I use a Gates belt though. Just like them...😂

Personally I’d make it as reliable as you can for a 1.8T just so I didn’t have to do it again any time soon and get more seat time!

I know I'm very late on this but asked what your viewers thought you should do for your turbo well.... I think you should do another build with a compound turbo set up Hmmm what you think?

Good idea, but surely a compound setup is designed to alleviate the problems of small turbos not flowing enough, and big turbos not spooling quickly...? A G25 sorts most of this out in one turbo package, with probably half the cost and hassle. 🤔

Yeah they look awesome dont they! To be honest they are the ones most on my radar, as they will allow big shits and giggles power whilst not sacrificing low down if I run it detuned on track. I've enquired but struggling to get a sale sorted with the lockdown thingymajiggy
