I'd feel a bit robbed if I bought it, glad I didn't, and glad this video was posted so that idea never comes to mind again. Great video format, would love to see more

You were absolutely right regarding Destiny. I've been playing since launch as well and that game never fails to amaze me with how much they got right in the gameplay aspect above all else (minus year 1 of Destiny 2). Things have just changed so much that realistically the reason why Destiny is still running is because they got the formula right a long time ago, and when they deviated in the wrong direction they HAD to transition back to survive. Games like Suicide Squad utterly failed to realize that issue, and at this point its becoming blatantly obvious just from talking to devs (and now being one) that its a poor management and chasing "safe" investments issue that's causing the current stagnation.

The problem isn’t much the developers but the publishers that care only about the boardroom pitch, stock price, and quarterly revenue numbers. MK 11 while people may not have loved the gameplay mechanic changes had some micro transactions but a ton of free cosmetics and content. Only a few years later and MK 1 has massively reduced the free content, and cosmetics and locked up what it does offer behind its largely real money only currency

Yeah, I could rant about Anthem for ages. I think it's my biggest disappointment of all time. It had such a prestigious studio behind it, a good core mechanic (flying suits? what's not to love), it looked absolutely incredible. While the "looter shooter" concept was new to me at the time I thought I'd give it a go. And what I found was great fun, just flawed. Anthem wasn't the first live service game yet it was built like it was. So many core elements were missing, and it was just frustrating. We know Anthem had a troubled development period but it's like they just didn't play any live service games. As for Suicide Squad: Kill the Justice League? That's going to stay firmly unplayed. I think my eyes are bleeding from the footage and on-screen effects. Thanks Jamison.

Yeah Anthem was such a sad mess to watch. I had honest potential (and even some interesting lore) but holy cow did they ever just fail at so many things.
@Oxideist6 ай бұрын
The first issue is trying to shoehorn every game developer into an archetype, Bioware is known for single player RPGs not looter shooters. I'd already had enough of that genre since Destiny ruined gaming with it in 2014, but seeing a game dev forced to make a genre they don't usually do (and again with Redfall) proves to me that we are really in the day and age where the suits are in control and they have no clue what they're doing.

It's even funnier when you think about the Arkham series started becuase they wanted to pivot away from standard licensed movie games of the time. They canned the Dark Knight game to focus on a game set in just the batman universe leaning towards the animated series but still being it's own thing.. It was supposed to be anti cash grab franchise but now "it lived long enough to see itself become the villain"

Well, I appreciate the content. DTS is my favorite thing to watch during work lunch breaks. And yeah, as a general rule, if you expect a company's profits to increase every year into infinity at a rate over inflation, something is going to break eventually. I'll note that I think this is largely driven by the studios or their owners being publicly traded companies. Privately owned companies tend not to have as much pressure to mortgage the future for short-term gain.

If you want to play games that feel new, unique, ambitious and try to be a true pieces of art expanding the culture - play more indie games. This is where all this and more is happening right now. AAA games have gotten so expensive to make that less and less companies wand or even can take risks. With a current market situation (Embracer stuff, few big titles domination, recession etc.) it will only get worse in this matter. Play, support and talk more about smaller, indie or AA games. Ignore and stop buying/promoting giant soulless franchises, sequels etc. There’s nothing wrong with them as a video game equivalent of a blockbuster, popcorn movie, but that’s not what will ever challenge us intellectually or be truly experimental or/and creative.

This bothered me especially last year, but I cannot stand people trying to critique things in real time to have their perfect game of the year nailed down by the end of the year. 2023 ended up releasing something like a dozen (probably more) games of the year depending on your preference. But no matter what game you were watching coverage or streams for, people went out of their way to establish some objective metric for extremely minor issues most games have as well. We don't need to play games like we're building a stupid list every year, we can just respect the game that the developers made and pay enough attention to enjoy it.

I totally agree with you about how cynical having video games as a hobby is. It's really sad to see publishers chase "safe" bets like an uninteresting genre dragger we've all seen before, versus something different or at least fun. The ones with money to spend on a risk want to take the riskiest bets of all. They're chasing Fortnite's and Destiny's when they should be chasing Ori's, Tunic's, or Hi-Fi Rushes. Not games that are ubiquitous, but engaging and delightful to play through.

I'm playing The First Descendant now and I played Avengers from day one until they shuttered the online (and made it marvel ultimate alliance aka playable offline forever). Live service games can be pretty awesome if you just learn to have self control and embrace what you enjoy in the game. You simply don't need to log on if you don't want to, and put it down when it isn't fun. No genre is bad, but every genre is bad for someone.

I loved the late 80's-90's suicide squad comics when I got around to reading them and this game completely missed the mark for fans like me. I'd have loved a game that covered the original SS in a modern context where they go in on some ridiculous mission that makes sense to the government but needs to be deniable and some of them die but generally succeeding (more like the second movie than the first) in the same way that the Arkham games did Batman justice, but instead we got them killing the Justice League (which let's be honest, they couldn't do) in a looter shooter that instead of making the individual members stand out in some meaningful way made it a generic run and gun FPS. I'd guess that a lot of people interested in a SS game don't particularly care about live service aka milk your wallet games but had hoped Rocksteady would have put out a good game like the Arkham games. And if the reporting on the development on this game is accurate I feel for the devs who joined rocksteady thinking they would be working on something like the Arkham games only to find out they would be working on this instead. My condolences for your sacrifice playing this game but I was entertained by your dismantling of why it was so bad if that's any consolation.

That no one in charge of the money didn't have enough to sense to see that and nix it right there and then, amazes me. I'd say it's unique for gaming. Both of us have always stayed pretty on top of movies and while there's definitely been a dark Marvel shaped influence on big movies for a while, it feels like we're swinging out of that which is great and also there are just so, so, so many movies to watch and there's never been more outlets to find them. Same for books, which I think both of us have only in the last couple years started to get back into enjoying. But yeah movies and books are just for pure enjoyment and still feel very full of surprises.

I think the game is wasted potential of an interesting idea, and it's a shame how much work was obviously put into this with the graphics, facial animations, etc. just for the end result to be so corporate. An increasing trend among games as we can all see. An economic system based on infinitely increasing profits is anti-creativity. It's easier and more predictable to copy what was successful before. Higher ups don't actually care about video games like the actual developers and players do, they just want the big arbitrary number to go up. Video games and every other creative medium deserve so much better than to be bossed around by profit margins
