This is probably my favorite song ever, so glad you dug it. Deftones aren't really "nu-metal", more alternative-metal/post-hardcore if anything. Though their earlier material is more in that nu-metal vein and they are a big influence on most of the band's in that genre. Man, Rah, I'm so glad to see you discover a band like this. This will definitely be another rabbit hole to go down. They have some of the vaguest lyrics I've ever heard at times. You summed up Be Quiet and Drive pretty well though, I'd say. 5 songs worth checking out: 7 Words, Around the Fur, Back To School, Hexagram, and Royal. Another great reaction, man.

Yea deftones early work had some nu metal. My favorite song from them is called Bored. It's the first song off their debut album. Chino does a good job of blending in his soft singing along with his harsher vocals in this track as well as many other songs. He really is a unique vocalist. U should check it out

I used to listen to lots of metal as a teen, but not so much these days. Deftones are one of bands I still listen to from time to time and reconnect with. Drummer is amazing, then Chino's vocal is so haunting on top its like a metal opera 🤣👌

3:31 - Calm and reflective but animated. I think it's the guitar chords and choice of tone that gives it ah... maybe not a Sunday afternoon feel but like a Friday afternoon where the weekend's incoming (aspirational for what's to come). At the same time - I think the guitar is adapting to his singing style so it's a bit of a both-and.

I listen to this song every few months for going on nearly 20 years now... it keeps things prioritized and in perspective for me. This is my top Deftones song. I like Hexagram (super heavy) and Mirvana (chill) also.

Deftones learned alot about song creation from Maynard of Tool. But their lyrics have always been really out there. They write about some really bizarre things. Take 'Digital Bath' as an example, where Chino wrote it about electrocuting a woman in a bath tub. My Top 3 songs for them would be: 1. Passenger ft. Maynard James Keenan 2. Digital Bath 3. Deftones honestly is a great unique band. They fought to avoid the nu metal label. I would describe their sound as Sonic Rock, if that makes sense. I get you with it sounding hype and chill at the same time. Their first album has a similar thing where it feels both aggressive and like lying down to die and give up at the same time. It's the album I'm most familiar with so I'll give my top 3 from that: Minus Blindfold, Nosebleed, Fireal. No particular order. He also makes dolphin noises and cat screeches in this album.

Nice! Thanks for doing Deftones. His voice is definitely one of the most unique out there along with Maynard James Keenan. This is a band that has everything from slow ballad like songs to the heaviest hardcore song and everything in between. The range is crazy. Every song has groove and they go HARD. Try "Rocket Skates" for something more "harder". Or "Passenger" which is a cult classic featuring Maynard James Keenan of course.
