Not every biker can do the major full blown service on thier bike, but you CAN do some of it to lighten the financial load when the big service comes round, the main consumables still need to be replaced, so here's an Oil, Filter, Spark plugs and Air Filter change, easy things you can do at home to slash the costs of those big bi-annual services. After 2 years of watching your Tiger videos, I finally dared to start doing stuff myself! I did the exact things you did in this video and I got it riding again :) The only thing that went wrong was due to the fact I have a 2003 model with 2 fuelconnectors and when lifting the fueltank, one of the plastic fuel connectors broke. I managed to get it out and replaced it with a new one. Can I say I'm a bit proud of myself :) Thanks for the great vids!!! Keep it up!

The good thing about this is it parallels a car/truck engine service so this'll be useful for those who are already familiar with those services but apply them to a motorcycle, or give riders confidence in performing this on their car after completing it on their motorcycle.

You are so right mate, there's not difference between this task on a Triumph Tiger or a Honda Civic... it's the same principals of independent coil packs and everything being buried so deep it takes an hour to get to it!

Hi Delboy, Just wanted to say thank you for helping me put my awkward side stand springs back in place today whilst at Southampton Harley. A really nice thing to do and thought I recognised you. Great crack and enjoyed the visit to the shop despite being bitten by the springs whilst attempting to do it myself. Very difficult without a toolkit and thankfully my mate had one at hand. Yet another awesome video. You've hit the nail on the head about the service. I think most people see the price tag and assume its going to be way too difficult, when in reality its simple for the most part, just massively time consuming. Keep up the good work!

Thats the issue buddy, "time"...i guess they have a right to make a living, and the absolute full blown service with brake fluid and fork oil included can be as much as 10 hours... ask a plumber to spend that long working on your heating system....the bill would easily make four figures...... Doing this kind of servicing yourself and just taking it in for the techy part can save you well over £500.....no brainer aye?.

Hi Del, once again a great video. I'm just working my way through them all. I take my hat off to you and your good lady for all the effort and enthusiasm that you both put into making these video's. I reckon they give people the guidance they need to tackle/attempt work that they would previously of passed over to a dealership. So good on ya' I'm doing a bit of work on my 1995 triumph speed triple at the moment and would love to send you some pics. A good few years back I bought a 1996 900 Trident, and I made so many cock-ups as I had no manual and a lack of knowledge, but I learnt the hard way fudged my way through it, great bikes the early Hinkley's with the spine frame. I'm a Harley fan too and have converted my fatboy from EFI to carb, done a chain conversion which I think is far better for a bike down here in OZ and various other bits. A wee bit of video assistance is what people need, and yours are top notch! Keep them coming, I tell all i know to go on your page and have a gander. All the best, Geoff

Always a pleasure to watch, a big help knowing what I'm letting myself in when changing the plugs and coils. My bike is very temperamental in damp weather and my understanding is that the 03 r6 had denso coils which apparently there was a recall for as they were bridging / failing and letting condensation in. It's sometime like it's firing on 2 or 3 and runs like a twin. my ride home there I was in 3rd and when pulling the throttle back I had extremely slow pick up almost no pick up! and erratic idling. My garage checked and said no outstanding recalls for that vin, I don't believe them one bit, the issue started occurring about 4 months after I bought it when the weather started to go down hill...

Sounds like a bit of investigative testing is needed.. you could do a resistance check on the coil packs, it could be something as simple as a dirty, or loose, connector.. these modern bikes are annoyingly senstitive to anything not properly put together right... have you had the throttle boddies balanced recently? It's a static check on the butterflies?? And has the fuel filter been replaced in the tank, as when they clog up, you get intermittent feed, this can cause the pressue to drop in the fuel rail, leading to a stutter and poor pulling away, could just need a 12k service (or 10k if it's an R6)...

I watch YT channels too ,and over the years i see them evolve and develop, i don't think any creator changes their style deliberately, we just evolve as people in tune with the online environment, I also lament the old style in many channels i watch too, like Jimmy Deresta when he was in his nasty old basement shop in New York rather than now in his huge warehouse place... but thats positive development i believe. what is truly sad is the negative development of the YT platform itself.. i miss the happy days of friendly people sharing what they want to share.. these days it can be a toxic place at times, infected by bullying and abuse, and that has been the biggest single effect in all YT creators ! You have no idea how much this video saved my ass, I basically bought a Tiger based on this video based on how to do the work, and how well you put this together, theres so little info about the 955 out there this is a blessing. Thanks again for your time and effort in doing this, I just replaced my rectifier and may have to replace the stator, this video was key in making that happen. The only problem I had was trying to get the plastic bits that the front turn signals are hooked onto off, they seem unremovable and really frustrating to get the tank on with them there, even scratched my paint :(

Hi buddy, I know exactly what you mean, those stupid triangular panels are a complete pain in the arse, and when you take the fairing off, to do anything inside, you then have to take a bolt off that's mounted on the inside next to the forks, which is almost impossible to get to with any tools... the big 955 is an awesome bike, and I love mine, specially since I ratted it, but they have some proper stupid design choices in the way they are built... a little tip, if it helps you, always run you chain a little looser than normal, it's a common Tiger foibol... they have quite an extreme arc in the swing arm, as they are jacked up so much, so when you sit on them, with a pillion and luggage, the chain can go horribly tight... so most big Tiger owners run them a bit loose... or at least set the tension with a couple of bags of gypsum in your top box lol !

Ah ha, yeah I finally figured out how to remove those suckers, I have dreams of Line-Xing the bike and crash bars, due to the dents and ugly bubbling of the tiger stripes, but after looking at the gas tank off, seem like it might be a little tricky to do. Thats a great tip about the chain, as I just got the bike, and haven't gotten a pdf manual for it yet, it was looking rather loose and the sprocket has a little ware, I was just about to order a new chain for it actually. Haven't looked into how easy/hard it is to adjust the chain either (wishing for a center stand) but I do intend to use it to carry stuff, Im light, but so was the previous rider, and tuned the suspension all the way down because he was short, so I was going to tune it back up, but not sure if that will affect the chain tensioning. Oh bikes! so much to know and each one is so different.

Hi again buddy, good luck with all of that, just a quick point- don't adjust chain tension on a centre stand, as it unloads the rear suspension and the chain drops slack, if you then tension it at this point, it will be too tight when you drop it off the stand... always adjust it with the weight on the wheels - a paddock stand is the best of both worlds as it's upright and loaded.. and they are pretty cheap on Ebay... good luck with it again, tc, Del

Yeah, go ahead buddy, you won't regret it, they are a fantastic engine and the best test of it for me was lugging it's fat ass all the way to the Bulldog Bash with me, Penny, and enough camping gear for an army on it, ran it down the drag strip 8 times, where it ran consistent low 12's all weekend and then lugged us all home again in pouring rain on the Monday ! A true bike for all seasons ....

Is there ar big difference in 2001 and 2005 year models, except alloy wheels and 8HP more power? I have read that in year 2003, they reworked suspension to improve maneuverability. Do you know if that is a big difference in between these two?

Nice job Del, the 955 is surprising similar to my 800 with the exception of the battery box doesn't need to be removed. I've only had the tank of once, and again with a full tank of fuel :/ which weighed a ton. As always very descriptive, well thought out How To video :)

It's not always the case mate, it's just something to check, you know how it is, every bike comes to a point, usually about 3yrs old and 20k miles, where there comes a huge list of expensive things to do... usually that includes tyres too, and it's all too easy theese days to look at the situation, see the 1st MOT looming and just think 'paah, I'll just trade it in'... then they find that the dealer offers them bugger all, so they are off selling them privately... and there's nothing wrong with this, just as long as you scratch beneath the surface and check what's gonna hit you in the face in the next few thousand miles, before you spend all your budget on the bike...

Yes mate, have thought of that, but actually I was gonna take it off altogether, as it doesn't really do anything, I always use tie downs and with it removed, I can use the side stand and twist the bike across the lift at an angle...

Hi Del just a very small observation. The electrical connectors that have the wire retainer - you don't need to take the wire off to release the plug, you just press it into the plug and it will release. The wire stays within the plug. Dave

Excellent video and commentary as always. Just an observation, the sensor on the front of your air box doesn't need the spring clip removing, you can push the clip towards the body of the switch and the connector will pull off. I've lost many of them in the past they have a tendency to take flight when removed. Look forward to the next instalment. :)

Ayup Springy, if you buy the black Tiger mate, I'll swop you the bodywork... done it before in the past, you just do a complete exchange of all panels... front mudguard, rear tail panel, side panels and tank... my orange stuff is mint under the vinyl wrap and I'd much prefer a black one if I had had the choice... and you could come down to the garage, we could get the cakes and kettle on, imagine what a video that would make lol!

The tank connection is a quick release valved connector so seals at the tank and the pipe when the pipe is disconnected It is not a big issue to disconnect. then it is possible to move the tank out of the way to fee up access.

Well taught regarding cost savings for jobs easily done by the home mechanic. The price/benefit ratio drops off when you need specialized tools to make the job time efficient. Valve clearance shims can easily be changed by the home mechanic too with cam shafts removed. Measure clearances twice and calculate shim thicknesses needed before removing the cams. Take care to note cam sprocket timing positions and always maintain cam drive chain tension, so it won't skip a tooth (causing more fiddling), and don't drop sockets down the cam chain drive tunnels! (can be retrieved with a magnet)... There are free plans to make your own valve compressing tool available on one of the popular Triumph discussion boards, so you don't have to take the cams off again next time, but if you're like me, you will anyway. Some years apparently had soft valve seats and the clearances tighten up rather quickly.

Hi Del, you have been a great inspiration for me and gave me a lot of confidence maintaining my 600 bandit. Partly because of your videos on triumphs but mainly because it looks like a fantastic bike I have just bought a ST995i 02 model and pick it up in a few days. I absolutely cannot wait! 187mattg81 Hi mate, for a basic service like this the principles are exactly the same, and the 995 is a very similar engine... check the service history to see if the valve clearances have been done, if you wanna shave a few shekels, you could talk to a local mechanic you trust and see if they can quote you for checking and adjusting valve clearances if needed... then you can do the rest of the service yourself...! But don't worry too much mate, at under 10k miles, that motor is barely run in... and will do 10x that mileage without missing a beat. Hope that takes away some of the worry... and enjoy your new bike mate!

So done a full service today after watching along and found it very informative and made the job a hell of a lot easier. Got the bike back toflgether fired her up and the engine management light is staying on! Any suggestions please I wonder if it might be a coil breaking down but obvs with the bike it has to be stripped down again to chamge them out so I was wo dering if there is anyway to check first

Difficult to diagnose a check engine light mate, you can only be sure by plugging it in a a reader...check you haven't left any plugs unconnected, if you suspect it's coil packs, maybe check how old they are, how many miles etc.. may give you an inkling..!

Indeed mate, you're right, the difference between minor and major service on this particular bike is very great... the full blown major service can be 8hrs+ and cost over £600, so doing the simple stuff yourself can slash the costs...!

Lovely stuff - just got my 2004 out of long term storage with 11,000 miles on her, and started the maintenance. Definitely getting to the point where parts are hard to come by ... coolant hoses and whatnot ... and it looks like some compromises might have to be made, but a coolant hose is a coolant hose, right? It's a shame that special tools are needed for some of the more advanced work or I'd have a crack at those myself, but as you say doing all the basics is a real money saver if we're willing to put the time in. Coolant hoses aren't a specialist job mate, i can only thing you mean other things.. and try Wemoto.com for hoses.. they have all kinds of things the dealer wont have !!! worth a try ?

Triumph's manual indicates to screw the dipstick to check the oil level, the japanese brands recommend to do it without screw it, but triumph indicates to do it always.

Love the videos as always, I’m going to ask if you could do a video on a 2015 Triumph Explorer, service with oil change, plugs air filter and I don’t know if there’s a separate job for the gear box oil ?. I have looked online and can’t seem to find anything! As I know from your previous videos you do a fantastic job and have helped me service my 04 Fatboy and the 97 Sportster I bought that hadn’t been used for 18 years. All possible because of your channel. I’m not a daft person when it comes to fixing stuff 🙀 but tips and tricks you pass on are great and appreciated. My Explorer has only just 6000 miles on but the oil looks very dirty and my gear changes are a little stiff 😮 I’m out for an oil change which I can do but I’ve never had the tank off for a K&N filter. Hi David, sadly these days, we can't do videos to order, we only ever cover what is due and scheduled on our own bikes... I appreciate your kind comments, that's very kind praise... as far as I remember your bike isn't due a proper service to 12k miles, but you can change the oil at any time, and the simple tank removal procedure is in the manual, there's nothing to it... it's just fiddly removing all the bits of plastic to release it, just take with it and you'll get it done! Not at all Richard, really easy job if you are confident to dig your way down to the valve cover... once it's off, it's such an obvious job, just pop the bike in gear with the plugs out and rotate the rear wheel round until the lobes are pointing away from the shims, then just measure the gap... checking them is easy, but it's when you need to replace a shim that it gets a bit more technical... all depends on your experience. I try not to do such videos as it can lead novices down a road they can't back out of and gives a false sense of confidence... it really is serious if you get it wrong! Thanks for watching mate, Del

Hi mate, with no other mods, just the filter, then no that's fine... it will re-flash perfectly fine on it's own, if in doubt, just do a 10min idle from cold, then switch off without revving, and that'll give the ECU a chance to 'learn' the new free breathing filter and enrich the mixture accordingly.

brilliant video mate, one thing though, the clip on the right side of the engine under the frame that you removed the metal spring clip from, I believe that you don't need to remove it from the body of the clip, as far as I can tell with ones on my bike you simply push the metal part in toward the clip body and it will spread the kinky parts outward allowing for the clip to be removed without the danger of breaking the clip. but I know I could be wrong about your clip as I haven't worked on a Triumph before.

Great informative vid for new bikers Del :) Not really an issue with the tiger as the plugs are so well hidden, but a bit of dielectric grease on the plug caps will help keep,water out if the top of the engine is a little exposed. It also makes it easier to get the bitches off ;)

Hi mate, about 6 people have mentioned this, and yes, my book says the same, and it seems to be 'unique' to Triumph engines, yet every other bike manufacturer I've had says dip it flush... in terms of level, the difference is minimal, but go with your manual in all cases...

One question Del, how do you approach those jobs that crop up as a result of winter wear (corrosion etc) - do you do them as they appear of do you start a bucket list of jobs to get to once the weather settles down. How do you deal with signs of rust - dab on something that limits the spread of rust or do a full blown clean and respray of the affected area?

Always best to do jobs as they hit you i think, it depends slightly on what they are, but if its winter related, then its never finite, it will only ever get worse, and time aids that...so i get stuck in as soon as i have time.. its why i love Ratbikes, any work is purely practical and never cosmetic...makes for an easy life in winter.!!

The Tiger looks like a real pain to work on. I have a 2004 Speed Triple and it takes me about 5 minutes to pull the tank to access the air box.

Note. If you are doing this disconnect the two aluminium to plastic fuel connectors LHS of tank. Fuel will dribble out but get the tank off and turn it upside down. The bike in video has brass fitting on the left hand side. I didn’t and the plastic connector going into the tank snapped. They are £30 for a new one and removing the old plastic thread is a pain. ( hot screwdriver works) you will then probably need a 1/4 bsp tap to tidy the tank threads back up. Just disconnect bit of spilt fuel is easier to clean up.

Hi Jim, when disconnecting a battery you always disconnect the earth first, and re-connect it last, this is to prevent the whole system arc-ing out if you accidentally touch the frame whilst dealing with the live connection...
