Pork and Beans
www.sbcanning.com/2012/10/can...
Today I finished canning all the beans we started yesterday and making a batch of delicious pork and beans. I really like the way they turned out. We also got a little work on the cabin, a mini-harvest in the garden and shared some thoughts about needing to be intentional about having fun and slowing down. I hope you enjoy it.

Farmers work is never done. My husband and i spend half hour after lunch and just sit and relax, i have a hammock that I spent my time in. My favorite time is walking the dog at 5am in the morning and just listen to all the birds singing. Have a great weekend

While you were lying in the garden I remembered once years ago when I lived in Phoenix AZ I’d planted a few rows of pinto beans. And just as the sun was hitting the soil they started to pop out of the ground. And I do mean pop! I lay down in the dirt and watched those beans pop up and each time it made me laugh.😂

I agree about taking time for family. You need to enjoy the children while you can. Those are the future memories you will have. It’s not the number of jars or pounds of produce processed. The family will want to return home after the are Adults because you made a special effort for them. My family told us this, and appreciate the hard work on our farm but the experiences are good memories. ♥️

I find when I have too many thoughts running through my head to be able to relax, that writing them down is very helpful. It's not really the pressure to get things done that causes me to be unable to relax, but the pressure to remember things. So thoughts are just going in a circuit in my head, but if I write them down, then I know I don't have to remember them anymore. But I don't treat it like a to-do list, it's just a list that's there if and when I need it, not a list of things that need me.

That was, as usual, a great video. I got my 7 quarts of beautiful garbanzo beans canned today. Now I really want to get some pork and beans going. We ate pork and bean sandwiches (on my mom’s homemade white bread) when we were kids. I loved them so much. I haven’t thought about them for a very long time. (Also I’m remembering her leaf lettuce and miracle whip sandwiches. ❤️) Thank you for sharing - laying down in the grass and communing with nature sounds like the right thing to do. I was there with you in spirit. 🐝

I think everyone must have a similar insulation story from their childhood 😂. When I was a kid I played/rolled around in a derelict fibreglass boat for a day until my whole body was on fire. My little sister discovered some old insulation the cats were sleeping on and climbed in to cuddle with them. We found her in the act and rushed her into the bathtub but it was too late; crying and scratching for days! A great childhood tradition.

Homesteading Family covered freeze drying blueberries a few weeks ago. If you have heaps to do, do you can blanch them for 30 seconds, and them put in an ice bath. It should weaken the skins enough for them to freeze dry properly :)

If you do a rough chop in a food processor or blender with the blueberries will save so much time. They aren't pretty but if you use them in smoothies or cooking it doesn't matter, even if they are in a fruit salad it won't be too ugly.😁

Love the flick of the foot, closing your dishwasher! A new wire dog brush works great for poking holes in berries. I layer in two layers, put a piece of parchment over top of bottom layer and put another layer on top. Lisa would be helpful too, you can FD in the lids!! Dual purpose 😊 Once the strawflowers are fully open, save them! I still have some from 2004 that are dried. Same with dwarf sunflowers. I have a bouquet from my Dads memorial.

As a kid growing up i was living with my mom n sister on my grandparents farm, due to my parents splitting up. My granny always told us to stop n smell the rose's. I think she was on to a good thing, she was a very busy lady, everything was homemade from scratch, pantry full off jams n jellies, pickles, chuckneys, green beans packed in salt, herbs hanging all around the farm house. So as an adult now living in Gold River Vancouver Island, I started preserving beets, Branson pickle, jams n jellies just like her. I'm now retired n finding it very hard to live a healthy lifestyle, so I started growing a lot off our veggies , not in a big way like you do, but I love how you make thing's very easy to understand. I don't have a pressure canner yet to scared off them 😂😂. I water bath only so far. Maybe one day I will concor my fears😂😂thanks for your inspiration Mary B Gold River 🇨🇦🇬🇧

yes removing the bands from the jars and washing the jars really well up and around the flat is one reason to remove the band but also leaving the band on can also hide a false seal if your jar becomes unsealed with the band on the band holding the flat on can also allow the lid to reseal giving it the look of being sealed and safe 🙂
