The smoke is insane right now, but regardless my broccoli needed to be harvested. I definitely should have worn my mask, though; it was awful! Once back inside, we canned up some blueberries, blanched the broccoli and cauliflower we harvested and made a delicious giant pop tart. I hope you enjoy coming along with me.
Thanks for watching!

I’m so impressed with how beautiful and healthy your broccoli & cauliflower plants are. It’s very sad to see how Mother Earth is struggling so greatly this year….fires & smoke, excessive & dangerous heatwaves, my state of Vermont in New England was totally ravaged by torrential rains & devastating flooding. May you all stay well throughout this smoke-filled summer. So grateful to have found your channel….I love that you love the beauty you find in pretty nearly everything 💝

@suemcknight9051 - Yes, Chelsea has to go about her farm chores like we do in New Hampshire. My heart goes out to those in VT, NH and elsewhere regarding this recent flooding. Our farm is in central lakes region and we are blessed to be on high ground, however, the rains have caused us to stop haying. We normally cut 6,000 bales a season, but the ground is saturated. So my husband and his brother are tending the cattle, mending fences and cutting brush. The gardens are doing ok. We are grateful to live rural. It pains me as well, to see Mother Earth severely affected by climate change as a result of industrial profits getting the upper hand.

Maybe your Hori knife is vacationing with the axe I can't seem to find for the last couple years! Blueberries look good. That cherry tree looks like it is similar to a Rainer cherry. That pop tart looked so good - it reminded me of the apple bars I make. But it gave me the idea to sub in the cherry pie filling I just made. Great harvest of Broccoli and cauliflower - hoping mine will be similar. High tunnel looks great. Great job on the cabin Dan! It is slow tedious work, but it will be worth it in the end. Great video!

Unless you have a totally self sealing face mask you aren’t getting much relief with regular Covid or N95 masks. You are breathing harder with a mask on so anything getting in the loose edges is just as bad. Sorry folks but we Canadians are fighting a losing battle this year. 🇨🇦

Please take care going outside. I have a migraine & we are having asthma attacks. We live in Central Indiana USA. Our view is almost as Smokey as yours. The smoke from Canada is horrible here. We are told to stay inside. It looks like the fires are near us. THEY ARE NOT. THEY ARE THOUSANDS OF MILES AWAY. So I can believe how bad it is there. I’m so sorry about those fires!!! I just freeze dried 50 lbs of sweet cherries. Working on pitting another 50 and tomorrow we pick sours (pie cherries). Ugh good for a couple of years. Your gardens are beautiful Chelsie! I also did 4 trays of raspberries and have 8 more in the freezer! We do have 45 raspberry bushes though. Wish we could share photos. Might I suggest trying a trial batch of FD’d broccoli and cauliflower- rehydrate and see how you like it before doing a ton of it. We did not care for it. 😐 We prefer frozen over freeze dried.

Wow - jam-packed video! Such a busy time of year for the garden. And I'm envious of your cauli and broccoli. I harvested my broccoli in June (down south near Vancouver) - can you believe that?! So early. Never heard of sea buckthorn - interesting. I gave up on currants (we had black, red and white) because of worms in the berry - ugh. I sure hope you get that rain. I'm finding those covid masks very useful in the worst of the smoke. Take care.

Those cauliflower/broccoli are AMAZING!! I ordered the hoops you recommended as the ones won't be high enough for netting my onions next year. We are having terrible times with root maggots this year and the only thing I haven't tried is netting them. We also have terrible times here with 3 insects on brassicas - flea beetles, root maggot flies/maggots and of course the cabbage moths. If we don't have a solid covered netting, one of the 3 is likely to get in, especially the files and flea beetles. When we make fresh pies, we use dry tapioca pudding instead of the cornstarch, works like a charm.

One of my favorite Saturday night dinners is a head of cauliflower steamed til done and while it is cooking make up a white sauce with just a touch of dry mustard in it. Drain the cauliflower and put into a nice big serving bowl, top with the sauce and cover with a nice layer of shredded sharp cheddar cheese. So very good. Lovely garden haul. Lucky you to have the cherry trees. Can't find the sour cherries down her in Oregon any more. I loved picking them u-pick with the stems on, rinse and then pull the stems and pits out. Loved having them for pies or in fillings for pastries. I also dried them i my dehydrator and would toss a few into oatmeal for a breakfast treat or into oatmeal cookies just as a change from raisins.

I have a Montmorency tart cherry tree I planted because I was having a hard time finding them anymore here in SW Idaho. It is so nice to have my own source for them. You could do the same if you have the room. They don’t take a lot of pruning, but they do need to be sprayed for Western Cherry Fruit Fly a time or two during the early spring/summer. I use an organic pesticide called spinosad.

Hello Chelsea from our New Hampshire farm. So sorry to see the smoke levels at your farm. We have been spared to date at our farm from poor air quality, however the rains have stopped us from haying any time soon. There is fence mending and brush to be cleared along the fence lines to keep the boys busy. Most challenging summer for us in 30 years. Hopefully your rain forecast will help to put out the Canadian and USA fires. Lovely broccoli, cauliflower and herbs! ~ Diane

Burdock is used a lot in Japanese cooking. It's called gobo and this is where i learned about this root veg and it is one of my favourite veggies now. The root is delicious stir fried. My favourite way is with chicken and egg over rice or with carrot in a dish called gobo kinpira (the kinpira seasoning works well with other veggies like potato as well). It also freezes quiet well when sliced or shredded.

If you looking for storage in your cabin, here is an idea. You can build boxes underneath your loft in between the 2x4’s, put the lid on hinges and you will have lots of storage, no need for a dresser or anything else. It’s such a great idea. The hinges can be self closing or held with a large hook and eye. There is so much room there you will be surprised how much you can fit without a lot of effort to make them.

Bt is also formed from milk. You can dilute milk and spray it on your plants or put into the soil. It forms bacillus thuriugiensis😊. I had a good gardening friend tell me he sprayed his garden with diluted milk (he used powdered milk), and I never knew why it worked. Now I do😊 Do not use whole fat or sweetened milk.

What is read said you have to spray Bt on plants, then harvest some of the infected caterpillars, whiz them up in the blender with the milk and strain it out and spray it. It’s a way to maximize the bacteria instead of having to buy more Bt.
