Its a small thing but I kind of liked that Laios gets his comeuppance for trusting a wild animal, after he cautioned Senshi not to trust the kelpie. Kensuke has been useful in alerting him to the presence off monsters, but he anthropomorphized it as "Kensuke helped me because he thinks we're a team!" and let himself forget that an animal's thinking is not human. But it's good, because that's the kind of mistakes people realistically make, getting comfortable in their perceived expertise and overlooking their own corner-cutting.

I feel like it’s also foreshadowing for himself. As a monster he helped defeat the demon but it’s Implied that ultimately they all collectively tripped and fell into a happy ending. A bit of goofiness makes people lower their guard, which makes them feel more vulnerable when they remember the danger. You can see a lot of videos of irl black bear encounters with an atmosphere like this: black bears are fuzzy and round things which usually move slowly and have a derpy expression, but they could also easily rip your arm off if they felt like it.

The way they gave her a little buoyancy that made the risky "stand directly above the dragon when we bring the bridge down on it" plan feel a little more reasonable. The collision with Laios as she runs into him in the corridor was a great visual way of conveying that the spell was active and what it did, and it's something I feel like borrowing when I next run a D&D game.

It probably wouldn’t have flowed as well, but I really miss the series of panels of Laois’s thoughts right after he kills the dragon. He goes from wanting to save Falin, before thinking that he should help Senshi and Chilchuck first, and then starts to think about himself. It shows that even with his apathy towards humanity, he does care deeply for his friends and family. I also like the dark physical gag of him trying to stand by pushing himself up with his left leg, only to immediately fall back down due to it being chomped off.

This is absolutely my favorite episode so far. But I have to talk about the music in this episode. It's so good at conveying the emotions of the scene. The absolute silence of Laios running on pure adrenaline as he stabs the dragon. The bombastic music screams at you that the team's plan failed. And the final song, oh my god, with most anime only fans unsure how revival works, they don't know how much of Falin is needed to revive her. But the music answers perfectly. The three moments about this episode that I cannot forget: My admiration for Laios being a fucking badass, leaping onto the dragon's face only to FEED it his LEG because he TRUSTED the dragon's jaw to hold him in place long enough for him to land the killing blow, while comforting himself that no matter how much it's gonna hurt, his sister suffered so much worse... 2: The shot from inside the skull. That screwed with me in ways I cannot explain. It's a sort of existential horror and the twisted, sick version of the happy reunion we were all hoping for. We are seeing Laios from her eyes--only, its where her eyes USED to be. How often have you seen a POV shot from inside what remains of a corpse.....? It's genius, in the worst way. Grotesque and horrifying and morbidly reminds us how death looms for us all. 3: ... The shot of the skull from the outside. The detail as even more grotesque than I would've expected because the skull, unlike the other bones, is charred black. It's still stained with her blood. It didnt even take them that long to get to the dragon, but even though she was digested shockingly fast, just trying to picture the extent of her suffering while she was still alive is a thought of such horror, Laios' words come back to haunt me: "this is nothing compared to what she went through." And he's right. I'd rather lose my limbs a dozen times over than know what it's like to drown in the dark, bathed in the stomach acid of a dragon.

Her blown pupils reflecting a very nervous senshi gives this “Oh shit, he ain’t gonna be good” vibe that the manga expertly went with. Even knowing what would happen, there's a special kind of despair looking through the empty silhouette of Falin's eyeholes at Laios's terrible face that the manga lacked. It's an unusual shot so it takes the viewer a moment to register what's obstructing your vision, and through that, what Laios has found. I'm super excited for Episode 12, and almost equally so now for these episode breakdowns. In an odd way, it feels like I get to share your excitement and enthusiasm for the animation style and the touches the different animators add every time one of these comes out. One thing I liked is how detailed the Dragon chewing on Laios's leg is for such a simple action. First the dragon is just Holding Laios without chewing too much into his leg for him to fall because the animal is intelligent enough to try eat him whole later instead of eating a leg and freeing it's prey, giving it a chance to flee. But when Laios stabs the dragon, it bites harder in a pain reflex, spewing blood that's probably both from the dragon's troath and Laios's leg, and just before dying, it's bite becomes so strong that it actually cuts Laios's leg. I don't know if this is in the manga or if this is animé original, but is a great amount of detail for a rather generic action regardless.

Some birds can change the colour of their sclera, I see no reason why the dragon couldn't, realistically it should probably be able to considering how big its eyes are. Sclerotic rings are present on non avian dinosaurs and birds, they are likely a necessity for something with eyes as big as the dragon's(an eye as big as what larger dinosaurs had might not have functioned without a sclerotic ring), this structure is also why birds are able to change eye colours. The bearded vulture makes its sclera progressively redder as it gets angrier or more territorial, I am not sure why this dragon would have a lighter sclera, maybe the longer it goes with out resting the redder its sclera gets.

God where to even start with this episode huh? Truthfully I've been a bit speechless/overwhelmed, maybe in the same way you might feel at an all you can eat buffet of delicacies. I love love loved the senshi tossing Kensuke shot - i think trigger is really hitting the 'right' points for when to place stylistic shots - when things feel so intense emotion overrides. It reflects the way time sort of slows down and your vision gets blurry with feeling, you become action and emotion rather than detail and stillness. I think that's why I don't mind if Senshi's hand is a bit warped, because when you experience moments like that, things get parsed "blurrier" for me, or more abstractly. Very excited to see how episode 12 goes down. Great videos as always, insane output for the high quality of these vids, very nicely done.

I managed to get my sister and cousin who was visiting at the time to start watching the week this episode aired, and they where both hooked by episode 2, and are dying to see what comes next, wondering what will happen after the end of ep 11, cant wait to see what happens, and I cant wait to talk to them about it.

I liked that the dragons eyes were greener! It made sense because it was under different lighting and it made it look a little more out of it element? Like obviously the dragon doesn’t fit down the streets, but also this nobel, ferocious fire breathing dragon looks a little diminished. It’s eyes aren’t a firey gold, but a ill looking green. I think it works, especially once we learn what drove it to visit the castle town in the first place

In the beginning of the video, That relaxed image of senshi from the manga reminds me of the famous berserk manga panel where guts is relaxing, sans armor and having a rare peaceful moment.

The difference in eye color could be because of the lighting? I mean episode 1 they were surrounded by fire while in this episode it was a cavern/city setting. Although now that you compare them, I wouldn’t expect them to be that green from how orange they were in the first episode, I’d expect maybe more of a light golden color. Maybe the green comes from the cold lighting of the cavern? But the dragons scales don’t change color as much as its eyes so it is a little weird when you think about it too much.

All in all, this episode conveyed how much the animation team has internalised the source material and portraited it in a new light, all the small tweaks and details added enhance the overarching experience. Maybe the next episode isn't going to be as action-packed as this one, but it will surely be a head-scratching appetizer for what's to come 🐉 Looking forward to your next video!

0:55 it is important to note that the first scene had fire as the main light source so thats probably why the eyes look different

A little while ago I started going through the entire studio trigger catalogue, and one of the things I've realized is that when setting aside my preconceived notions of what makes a show feel like a trigger show, one of their major defining features, going all the way back to their inception is the sporadic usage of CGI. Basically all of their shows will have at least one somewhat prominent usage of CGI, which was actually a little surprising to me, since I never picked up on it in places like the early episodes of Kill la Kill

i understand why it got cut for time but i do wish they kept the brief moment where laios was slightly delirious after losing his leg and insisted he needed to go help senshi and chilchuck and tried to stand up, even moving like his leg was still there and trying to put his weight on it to support himself in standing, only to fall right over because ITS NOT THERE DUMMY. that was one of my favorite little moments from this part of the manga

7:51 Laios owning cats in the past should probably inform his relationship with Izutsumi going forward. (You'd think he would've learned how to handle feline rejection better, mind you...)

Oh man I love your cut to Werzog. That really cracked me up in the exposition of an otherwise bleak, bleak segment of the episode.

The very first episode of Lodoss War OVA features a battle with a Green Dragon where a character named Woodchuck throws a knife at the dragon blinding it in one eye. Wonder where Ryuko Kui got the idea of having Chilchuck do the same thing to the Red Dragon. Laios finally takes down the dragon which is not so dissimilar to what Parn did. Also more uncommon fantasy creatures like Kobolds, undine are prominently featured in Lodoss OVA. The resemblance between the two shows is uncanny.

Delicious in the Dungeon is the first anime in a long time that is able to handle crazy tonal shifts this well, kinda reminds me of how Gurren Lagann handled its story, definetively a top tier show for me, hope it will get a full adaptations.

3:35 its kinda unrealistic but its hilarious how laios and chilcuck just tank some bricks straight on the DOME, that rubble did NOT look soft

It's Marcille's protection magic! They mentioned it when Marcille found Senshi and Chilchuck. It was able to tank some of the damage but not all. Chilchuck still got knocked out by that small boulder the size of a large boulder haha... poor guy

Have a feeling the dragons eye colour change may also be because the first scene introducing it also was more "warm/orange" as a whole? But it could also again be the emphasis on how memory is different from actual, since Chilchuck notes how the dragon seems bigger than he remembered, which! I mean it kinda did look smaller in the intro? From my mememory at least sgshhs

You deserve so many more subs for your content, i really love watching your analysis which brings up how trigger adapts and honors the manga in the anime, i have gotten so much more appreciation not only for the story but the animation techiques and everything that goes into making an anime. So now im here refreshing again and again waiting for ep12 to drop, it has become a vital part yo watching dungeon meshi for me, watching the episode, and later seeing what you have to say about it. ❤

Definitely my most favorite episode of the year so far. Trigger saving anime again. And the source material only gets better from here, so it'll just keep delivering! Glad that seasonal watchers are waking up to the fact that this is a true-blue fantasy show and not some episodic cooking-themed slice-of-life or whatever.

Poor Kensuke was just straight up NOT having a good time this episode lol. I'm just some anime only fan for now but it was cool to see folks show the panel of Falin's skull versus the IMMENSE improvement of the shot where you're looking thru the nose hole and eyes. That was such a cool idea.
