I think this was the proving run for the 767 before the 2009 inauguration flights. However, this was not the first widebody at Reagan. There was at least one DC-10 many years before that landed there due to weather.

i vaguely remember as a kid around 2005-2009, i would always see american DC-10s at DCA. i never thought about how huge they looked for the size of the airport.

His video caption states first ever wide body-in the description though it clarifies as first scheduled wide body. While this was the proving run flight ahead of Obama inauguration, delta did fly 767s in during that time. Yes a dc10 made an emergency landing prior to this, but alas it was not a scheduled Dca arrival

Great video! Back in the '90s widebodies were a common site at LGA. The runway at DCA is a smidge loner than LGA. I flew plenty of arrivals into LGA in the 767-332. Delta and TWA flew L-1011s and Eastern flew the A-300. In fact, I'd guess that 75% of widebody landings cleared before the runway intersection of 4/22 when landing on runway 31, that's probably a bit more than 5K'. It all depended on the weather- if it was low at LGA and all around you'd have an extra 10-20K of fuel for a distant alternate. That fuel meant higher weight and approach speeds. It worked out, but the full range of the widebodies wasn't possible for departures but that didn't matter since LGA had a max range limit to balance traffic with JFK and EWR. The farthest legal destination was DEN, which was more than the rule but it was grandfathered in.

We had a Nassau flight on the weekends before 9/11 and that has now gone by the wayside. Our partners at Dulles have Cancun service on Saturday.

It wasn't the first ever scheduled wide body at DCA. There were scheduled wide-bodies there in the mid-1990s.

I remember when that dc 10 of United's made that emergency landing at DCA, I worked for United at that time and the weather was bad in both BWI and IAD at that time and there was no other option for them
@bob80q11 жыл бұрын
last I heard USAirways has daily nonstop to Nassau out of DCA and Southwest is adding carribbean flights at BWI due to the merger with AirTran, not likely to see any int. flights added at DCA. There will not be any routine wide body flights at DCA due to weight and safety concerns, no need since 737-800 has more than adequate range to fly to west coast with almost as many seats as a 767.

wow this is sooo cool, i thought the first time a wide body landed in DCA was inugration week? i guess i was wrong, but isn't DCA's runway short, really short?

i accidently landed the level-d 767-300 at DCA when i meant to go for iad, i got the icao code wrong in the fms. The runways aren't very forgiving for a 767-300 to be honest. To land there with that safely according to boeing and the FAA, i'd imagine the plane has to be landing with 10% fuel, probably less. Theres no way it could land with heavy cargo or say 40% fuel, no way.

from ATL. They used this aircraft for President Obama's inauguration. It is not used daily. The last I heard they were considering adding a 767 SLC-DCA-SLC
@bob80q11 жыл бұрын
yes and that's long compared to other major airports like Orange County (5,700) and Chicago Midway (6,450) although they do not have wide body flights. Its also a safe bet this aircraft was flying with a minimal fuel load to save weight, wouldn't need anywhere near capacity for a flight of about 80 minutes.

WOW! A B767-300?!!! 6,000 feet of runway?!!! That bird had to have a MASSIVE weight restriction (landing limits) in order to be flown into DCA... The 757 has the thrust to slow the airplane down as soon as it touches down, but a 767 would be way too heavy for a landing at this partcular airport... Just... WOW!!!
