John Piper is one of the most humble, kind, knowledgeable and loving preachers of our day. And this sermon was excellent!

Not one Apologetic argument led me to Christ, though 30 years later I reference them often. It was His excellent glory assertively meeting my excellent need that won my life over. Nice reminder. Thanks. This informs my work as a chaplain to the sick, infirm, widow, infirm, and mentally unwell.

Do you believe Mark 16:18? It promises believers that you can drink anti-freeze and not be harmed. It's easy for you to type nonsense about "Almighty God", but it's another to test your faith with a glass of anti-freeze. Or do you pick and choose what you believe is true in the Bible?

I told my boss that the Bible is a historical document and a collection of history. He laughed at me and got really mad. He said it’s an allegory and said how could I possibly know that! I’m trying to study now because I know he will bring it up again and he hate’s Christianity. I want to stand firm and give solid answers. Not flounder and just say “well I know it is!”

I just came from Jeff Durbins' video about how we may know the Bible is true, and he pointed men to philosophical arguments about truth. Here, Piper goes to Scriptures amd makes a much better argument. Thank you Piper, and I praise God for men like Piper amd Edwards, who focus on the Bible, not man-made doctrines.

When a man strikes his male or female slave with a rod so hard that the slave dies under his hand, he shall be punished. If, however, the slave survives for a day or two, he is not to be punished, since the slave is his own property. (Exodus 21:20-21 NAB)

I appreciate this message as I've had similar thoughts & questions. I was hopeful that the second analogy was going to close the gap for me when you started talking about Judas, but I still was left with some questions. What about people who are fully convicted that they have seen and know God...but they have a different religion? Or further still, what about the atheists? As I understood your message & the Bible, God grants vision to our heart's eyes (despite Satan's attempt to cloud them), He calls us to salvation (more than just in general terms...individual people, individual moments). I don't believe that He would leave any of us to Hell - the Bible is clear He wants all of us. So how can it be that some are granted the opportunity to see and don't believe? Are we ALL given opportunity to have our heart's eyes opened?
@TheZackarios8 жыл бұрын
To that I would say they are still not of the truth. As in, they may have seen the glory of God in the same way an atheist may have done, but they did not see the true glory of God in Christ, in the gospel, in the Bible. John is pointing to the glory of God in Christ here too, not only seeing the glory of God in the world. Jesus is God manifest in the flesh. If they cannot see the glory of God in Jesus, then it's the same thing. They don't know the father, just like the Pharisees. They can't see the true glory of God. Just glory. There is then not much difference between the atheist and whatever other religion. That glory, that truth does not resonate in them. I do believe God has given us all an opportunity, but at the same time God knows the beginning from the end, he created it. So he knows what happens to each and everyone of us from the start and therefore in that regard we are indeed chosen/called. He gave us the opportunity but already knew the outcome of that opportunity, it is just, based upon the heart of that person. They have free will, but God also knows what is going to happen. All have the opportunity but some are not of the truth and are drawn to darkness instead of light. That is me thinking aloud, I can't give you a verse there.
@FRN20138 жыл бұрын
The Bible is clear He wants all of us, but we all have free will. Sincerity does not equal obedience. Obedience to the Gospel (trusting in the Lord Jesus for salvation) is required. The Bible is clear that most people will be destroyed in Hell, not saved. For example, Jesus said the road to Hell is wide & heavily populated, while the road to Heaven is narrow, with relatively few going up it.
@StefanJato8 жыл бұрын
+itsnotaboutme free will is predestined. We have free will in the sense that we make our own decisions but God is 100% sovereign over all things.
@FRN20138 жыл бұрын
Well, it kinda seems like you contradicted yourself there, Stefan, but I think I know what you mean. I have an illustration regarding the alleged conflict over God's sovereignty vs. God's allowing of human free will: Picture a flawlessly smooth beach. You want to create a likeness of the Mona Lisa in the sand...without touching the beach. If you were like the way some people view God as being, you could build a bunch of robots, programming them to march in certain ways so as to leave footprints that end up creating the Mona Lisa's image. That would be a great accomplishment. BUT if you were like the way I view God, you could fly over the beach in a helicopter & drop _cats_ at various places. You would know exactly where each cat would choose to run, & you would know the best place to drop each one. In the end, your Mona Lisa would be created by your foreknowledge AND by the cats' free will. And it would be a far greater accomplishment. I think the fact that God can limit his attributes & then fully take them up again makes him all the more amazing. We know that God limited his attributes to become the Man Christ Jesus. Jesus felt hunger & weakness. His knowledge was limited. His glory was limited. He died! God chose to limit his sovereignty. God’s will is not always done. We know it's God's will that none should perish. Also: Matthew 23:37 "O Jerusalem, Jerusalem…how often I have longed to gather your children together, as a hen gathers her chicks under her wings, but you were unwilling!” Matt 13:58 He did not do many miracles because of their unbelief
@StefanJato8 жыл бұрын
+itsnotaboutme Imagine It more from Gods perspective. God ordains that a man will put a nail in a board with a hammer. The man then chooses , by his own will, through Gods sovereign hand, that he will put the nail board. He doesn't sit around and ask God to swing the hammer. He does it.

+WhimsicleMimsicle WhimsicleMimsicle, thanks for your comment. The brevity of my post makes it easy to interpret a number of ways. As Piper was talking about the sap he used the same phrase and it resonates with me because the doctrines of grace frame my spiritual experience and journey. In the darkest hour of my life the tempter suggested to me that my faith was useless and that I should deny Christ. By the grace of God I could not bring myself to utter the words. It sealed my hope and trust in God's ability to keep me in spite of myself. I have been captivated by the gospel and struggle with the flesh but my confidence is in the Savior not my ability to choose. I pray you have the peace and hope that comes through genuine faith in Christ. God bless you!

It's weird how delusional people will listen to his sermon, and pretend there is actual substance to what he is saying. I think though that underneath what they say, they realize the truth. They fight dying just as much as non-believers do.

For what can be known about God is plain to them, because God has shown it to them.
