Detroit flood 2014 Basement is flooding 8-11-14 loc Detroit, MI

Sewage is backing up back through my main drain, floor drains and toilet in the basement. This is the video when the water was relatively clean and hadn't reached the plugs yet. I'll post more vids as soon as I can on the progress of the flood.

I live in Oak Park and ours was 2 feet high!! Water was BLACK. The street had water to the sidewalk. Cars were stuck on 10 mile. Our entire neighborhoods basements were flooded apparently. I have never seen it like this.

Me neither, I usually get a small puddle in the middle of my floor when it rains hard, but pumping back through my drains....never. I'm just glad I got home well before the roads flooded.....then I would be looking for a new car on top of basement appliances.

That sucks. At the Ohio/Mi border and we got hit with 3-4 inches also but luckily with recent upgrades in some areas didn't flood as bad. Now we just have to watch out for another couple rounds of toxic algae in the water supply. I'm glad I got a little gas pump for just in case off of craigslist cheap for situations like this.

If you have a basement toilet and drains connected to the city sewer, install a "sewage ejector" pump with a one-way check valve to block the reverse flow.

Yuck!!! Raw sewage is the worst kind of flood to have! On July 24th, 2010, I had about 18 inches of that yuckey stuff in my basement. Came up through our catch basin, even throwing the roughly 18 inch diameter steel lid right off the basin! It took about a week to clean it up, and my basement smelled like a sewer for about 2 weeks!

triton115 Yeah, I can't imagine anything worse than the drains reversing. I'm cleaning out everything right now. The flood left a layer of black sewage on everything up to 7 inches from the ground. Lost the dryer, washer (might try to repair), but my hot water tank and furnace are both fine. I lessened the chance for extremely bad smell by spraying about 1 gallon of bleach over everything (had to open all the windows) and by getting this crap out quickly. I've removed around 50 % of the flood damaged items onto the street. Should be done in a day or so.
