I still find this line of endings the most thematically fitting end to the game, especially the neutral one. All the endings are valid, but I just feel like a lot you see and experience in the game like Eliza's words sort of push in this direction, since so much of the game is about single individuals attempting to steer the course of human history. They all have more faith in their vision than in humanity's ability to choose, which to me parallels the central theme of this game.

The shot at 1:41 always gets me misty-eyed. I feel that picture, with Adam Jensen asking "Can they do it again?", symbolizes Adam handing the future to us in hopes that we can nurture it into a world we can call home again. This whole ending is one of the most empowering conclusions to any story I've ever experienced.

This my favourite ending. It feels like the coward's one, I can't choose so no one does, but it's admitting defeat I believe. It's admitting you don't know what is best for humanity. You can't decide for everyone, no matter how sure you are of being right. This ending give the world a moment of pause. Maybe it will do nothing, maybe things will get worse, maybe things will get better. But for who? And who are you to decide it's the right way? In the end, Icarus got to the sun and held the power of the gods. He chose not to use it, and that was the worse one at the exception of all the others. No one should hold so much power. Not even Adam.
@bud389
@bud389 7 жыл бұрын
The cowards ending would be forcing your view onto the world and showing them what you want them to believe in the hopes that you can change something. This ending takes more courage because you're not deciding for everyone. You're giving the people the right to choose which path to take, you're not giving them an agenda from behind a computer screen and hoping, PRAYING that they believe you, you're letting the death and rebirth of society take place, putting your faith into the human spirit to know what's best and decide which way to go. Sure, you could go the easy route and just give one group of people what they wanted to hear, you could try and justify one position over another, but what would you really be doing? You'd be hiding behind the words and reasoning of someone else. In a lot of ways, the Self Destruct ending IS the Adam ending. He used his power to keep the elites from controlling and pushing the world in one direction, "holding onto his humanity" per-se, like he says in the video. He could've abused the position he was in to choose one narrative over the other but ultimately made the sacrifice, the very brave and noble sacrifice, of giving the power back into the hands of the people. It's not admitting defeat because the very nature of the decision adheres to the belief that you'd be admitting defeat if you were to leave the future up to a single individual, that humanity can't decide what's best for itself, while this ending puts faith into the very people that make up humanity, and that they can ultimately decide what's best.

Yeah because the illuminati will totally not going twist everything in their favor. All that Adam does in this ending is committing genocide for no reason. I mean okay, maybe Adam has no right deciding humanity's fate, but why not give us the option of walking away then instead of blowing everything up?

Its a selfless choice, going down with the station and not allowing anyones bias to positively or negatively impact the world, everyone but Adam thinks they're in the right and that their opinion and choice is correct, but none actually care or think about normal ordinary people, unlike Adam describes as giving them a chance to choose for the better or worse their own future with this ending. Adam basiclly says no one should have the power of a god to choose mankind's fate and thus takes the people in powers choice away (including his own) to let the world full of good, bad and ordinary people decide for themselves.

I'm convinced this is the canon ending. In the after credits scene, Bob Page tells Morgan Everett "Keep going through the wreckage. Maybe we'll find something we can use for the Morpheus Initiative." It seems as though Page is referring to the wreckage of the Panchaea, which is destroyed in this ending only. Anyone else pick up on this?

You were right, but actually, Adam did die. The Adam we play as in DX:MD is a clone of this one. Certain NPCs will tell you that "it's you in the box, in the dark," and you can find a pod in the Versalife vault in Palisade bank with Adam's body in it. Even further confirming this, you can find evidence in GARM and confront Sarif afterwards (if you haven't already fininshed the Olav quest) and he will all but confirm it.

This is my favorite ending. All of the other endings require you to manipulate and lie to the public in some way. Even though that may achieve great things, and may end up better in the end, I still feel all of that would have been built on a lie. In this ending, your conscience is clean and humanity's progress is determined by everyone, together. One man shouldn't have the right to determine the entire course of their race. I think there is some purity in that.

i believe its wasn't "naked", but rather gray shaded half-truth,something more dangerous than a lie, for Darrow was the one responsible for all the mess, thus manipulating people into his position in an unnatural way.
@Dennis-nc3vw
@Dennis-nc3vw Жыл бұрын
This is manipulative because its literally covering up the truth. The Hugh Darrow ending is the only one that truly puts faith in mankind. I chose Darrow's Ending, but this monologue perfectly explains my reasoning.
@Kilo_23
@Kilo_23 11 ай бұрын
@Dennis-nc3vw it's not covering up the truth, it's removing the choice of the elite few on the rig from making the choice for the future of humanity. Adam literally says that no single person has the right to choose everyone's future so he'll take the fall and buy humanity another day to make the right decisions. Darrow along with the rest of the other endings are all cloak and dagger, hiding the full truth to push an agenda/ideology of the singular person. This ending some may see as "cowardice" as Adam is basiclly not choosing any future and is burying the rig, when in reality he's given the choice of humanity's future to everyone in hopes that his faith in them will be rewarded with the betterment of the human race.
@Nodrog666
@Nodrog666 10 жыл бұрын
Fair enough. My point is that I feel like Adam Jensen picking any of the "opinion endings" (Darrow, Sariff etc.) is less in line than self-destruct ending. Jensen does not attempt to manipulate the public. Instead, he destroys the broadcast tower and all of the harm it could do with it, but Bob Page and Majestic 12 still loom on the horizon, thus paving the way for Deus Ex.

Really liked this ending. Adam's death reminds me a lot of Rorschachs death from Watchmen. Just as Rorshach died for the truth Adam died for freewill, the ability for humanity to choose it's future and it's answer to the question of human augmentation without the influence of Sarif, Taggart, Darrow or even himself/the player. Because of him in this ending humanity's answer and future will not be controlled or twisted to a single person's or group's desire's.

Also; "Darrow tells the truth, he wants to make the people fear that technology and he has the rights to do so, as he is the creator." Dafuq you talking about? What Darrow did was monsterous, even he knew that, but thought his ends were the only possible means to save humanity. He was desperate. BTW: The role of creator holds no special privileged. If you create a being that can feel pain, recognize it as pain, and suffer under that pain - then to inflict pain upon them is FUCKING MONSTEROUS

Not a question of democracy but rather if humanity needs to be guided or can to decide for itself. Sarifs lies would have sped up aug dev to the point people wouldve been hurt. Taggarts cover up wouldve left the future to a group who could change it as they desired. Darrows truth would hastily end aug dev which can save lives. Destroying Panchaea, removing the influences of these three and leaving only the question, doesn't show a lack of trust in humanity but rather the greatest in it.

I love the subtlety with the scenes of people voting. I know a lot of people think voting is pointless, but it is choosing your future. How you want to progress and where you would like the future to go. You hold your future in your hands when you vote. When you make your choice.
@jordank8172
@jordank8172 8 жыл бұрын
+eastwing329 Imagine I put a box in front of you. I had you vote between things and then had you put your vote into the box. I subsequently burned the box and your vote. Did your vote matter? It's a similar concept to the USA voting system. Citizens get access to the "popular vote" system which has no direct bearing on who is elected president. A candidate could get 98% of the popular vote and still not get elected. George Bush vs Al Gore showed that a US citizens vote means pretty much nothing. The only votes that matter are electoral votes. The system was designed with that idea that the elected representatives would pass on the vote of their citizens but they have no federal legal obligation to do that. So you'll find that many times the electoral representative will vote opposite of what his citizens voted. Voting is a great tool, but only when the government allows your vote to matter.
@harmonicajay91
@harmonicajay91 8 жыл бұрын
Thing about Bush v Gore is that the voting system in Florida was absolute garbage so the votes that were cast were extremely confusing and thus how the absolute fuckary that was the 2000 elections came to be. As for voting, it's still your choice. And that's what the game is about: Choice. You have the choice to play how you want. Do you choose to go in guns blazing or do you choose non-lethal tactics. Do you choose to spread the news or doctor it or just let the truth die to give humanity the chance it may need to shape its own future for itself? That's the genius of this game. Unlike most choice based games, the decisions feel like they matter here.

Its quite the conundrum when you think about it, either Darrow or Jensen would be more moraly right choices, since Darrow's uncovers the truth and lets the people decide what to do, but then they would fear augumentations, and there Jensen's ending where to not risk that prejudice he destroys the facility letting people choose freely, theres no better choice between both really since both are hopelessly romantic in their own way. Jensen's is kinda flawed even if i liked it best, its got the argument that now that theres no more illuminati the free people will guide evolution, as if saying there wont be any new conspiracy groups mimicing the illuminati. But thats the same as thinking that just because two people are good theres no chance at all of their offspring being evil.

This ending always showed me that achieve the goals of transhumanism we must first learn to accept that part of ourselves before we try to improve the human condition. By taking slow steps for the greater good, we would be achieving more than what we could ever imagine. Adam's choice was to let mankind decide if they were truly ready for change and improvement, and if they were ready then mankind would strive towards something greater.

Well,the point of this ending is to let humanity decide for itself,not decide for yourself.Admittedly,this is the most "democratic" option but not the most pragmatic one,because you are leaving the old,corrupt systems to influence the public opinion. Additionally,this could be a failure from Jensen's part to take the hard decision and choosing the "I QUIT" option.

@HatKeinenNamen What makes this ending so powerful is that adam chooses to believe in humanity even when he has been lied, manipulated and betrayed by many. He chooses to believe in humanity even after having experimented the worst of it. Why? Because he knows there's also good in there. Yes others will try again to impose what they want to the rest but if the majority of us still stand for freedom and believe like Jensen that we all together must choose our future then good will prevail.

"If you had he cure for all kinds of cancer in your blood and refuse to share it with the rest of the world, me and millions, maybe billions of people would despise and hate you for the rest of our lives. " That's not what the ending is about. They already have Adam's DNA, so these arguments are literally pointless. This ending is about the control, monitoring, and licensing of augmentations, and the future of humanity and how they will implement them and regulate them. The self destruct ending poses the question to humanity how they wish to continue with augmentations, instead of trying to influence them with Darrow, Taggart, or Sarif's endings, and becoming exactly what the illuminati in Deus Ex is, a shadowy figure behind the scenes manipulating humanity. "This is not a question of freedom and choice" Yes, it precisely is. None of what you said pertains to the decision happening right here.

@RahatSHLX Um, you realize this game is a prequel, right? This is clearly the canon ending. KIlling everyone ties up the loose ends perfectly for 25 years later in Deus Ex. At the end of the credits, Megan Reed says she "had nowhere else to go," implying Adam and Sarif are gone, and the company along with them.

@danutmh I didn't pick sarif either because he tells us to lie to everyone. I chose this ending and it fit my character. Such a strong message from this game

Even as a transhumanist who deeply sympathizes with Sarif's perspective, this is my preferred ending. Sarif was too eager to cut corners and bend morality to achieve what he saw as the greater good, but in order to do that he would have to push his dream on others who have not chosen it willingly. To remove that freedom of choice from the people would make transhumanism no better than the eugenics movements of the early 20th century. Transhumanism is an extension, not a counterfeit of, humanism

Adam wasn't really wrong, he represent faith, that the people will find out the answers for themselves and act on it. Darrow tells the truth, he wants to make the people fear that technology and he has the rights to do so, as he is the creator. Another alternative is that the people will decide if they want a different approach of technology which is less harmful.

I do honestly prefer this ending. It's never fair to leave the fate of all humankind in the hands of a single man. I feel the best choice is to let humanity itself choose. That's how it's always been.

You either die a hero, or live long enough to see yourself become the villain.

So then you agree? Adam's choice to leave the decision to each and every individual out of a sense of belief that they would all come together and do the right thing was naive? Glad we agree.

@mentaldagger You know there's a way to save her right? With the carefully picked augs it's quite easy. A.K.A >the Sarif Ending:)

Adam talks about trusting mankind to make its own decisions, but the whole point of choosing this ending is that you don't trust mankind with the truth. I picked the Hugh Darrow ending, but this monologue sums up my reasons for doing so. It's wrong to lie to mankind because you want to make decisions like this all by yourself.
